      As reported in the previous studies, the maximum pecking velocity is about 6-7 m/s, and the maximum deceleration of woodpecker head is about 1000g (g is the gravitational acceleration) That is about 10- 12 times more than a human can stand.

      Evolution's a scary thing
      Peppers like Jalapenos evolved a toxic chemical specifically to stop mammals from eating it, but birds are immune to. Because birds spread seeds better than mammals do.
      That toxic chemical is capcaisn. The chemical which triggers the "spicy" response. Caffeine is also a chemical coffee developed specifically to kill bugs, but to us humans it triggers that awakened and stimulated feeling we enjoy.
      Nature is weird, and I love it.

    We had woodpecker outside out house earlier this year, around a month or so ago. We were doing yardwork on the backyard and I came to the front to grab something and kept hearing a pecking noise, looked up and saw a woodpecker in the neighbors tree going to town. Never seen one irl before that

    How does the tongue act as a shock absorber to the brain, if it wraps around the back of the skull and not between the skull and brain? Plus wouldn’t it need to absorb the shock from the brain hitting the front of the skull?

      I would assume the wrap around has nothing to do with damping the impact and all to do with the spatial puzzle of storing a long tongue... It has to go somewhere.

    I had a huge willow tree that provided beautiful dappled morning shade. The first notes of alarm was a woodpecker moving in, pretty soon the bugs had killed the entire tree.
