Man, bodyfat distribution has such a genetic component to the propensity of where the body will prefer to store it (abs, hips, low back, etc.) I've seen such a variability between clients and even on myself. Great video topic!
I just wanna say MK has an underestimated physique. He doesn't have the best genetics and he's not on gear, but he still has a solid physique imo. He's also really strong too, so its not just fluff like Athleanx.
I think with the love handle discussion it also comes down to people not knowing where to have their trousers/pants. If you have naturally wider hips and where you pants super low it's gonna look weird because these gonna be a drastic taper up into the waist. I'm not saying to go full 19th century hig h waisters but play around with pulling them up on or above your hips. Instead of your hips looking like 'love handles' then they will actually look like they are a part of the leg and pelvis structure... because that what they actually are.
I was told by Reddit to cut at 174cm 70kg when I showed my physique: Tiny arms, no upper body muscle and a round belly. I spun my wheels listening to these people until I messaged MK and he convinced me to bulk and I am finally seeing gains. I've always had a skinny fat physique even when growing up, always had a belly so I definitely think it's genetics and I'm probably prone to storing fat in my midsection. I don't think anyone can accurately tell what's their BF%. People for some reason tend to discard genetics and assume that it's your fault.
🤜🤛 What most forum goers and commenters don’t understand is the importance of muscle, and how slow it is to build especially for average guys. Barely any muscle with a small belly is still skinny.
Too bad you didn’t find the starting strength subreddit first. Somehow I did and avoided having to learn the hard way that the solution to skinny fat isn’t a cut, it’s bulking while putting on decent muscle. I’m on the same journey as you brother, I plan on cutting in May.
At one point I was 285 lbs and 26.5 % bf (dexa scanned, 9 point tape measure, and 9 point skin fold averaged together) and my midsection actually looked like the “16-19%” image. All my fat was pretty much on my extremities. Lower calves/feet and thighs, forearms and upper arms, neck, mid face, a bit on the lower hips and butt. But my chest and belly were relatively flat for being so heavy making me think I was 17% at 285 lbs. I was not😅
I’d say that if you’re into aesthetics, which a lot of young lifters are, you should definitely trust actual people around you way more than dysmorphic kids online. If a friend of yours tells you that you’re looking bigger or sharper, you should probably trust them rather than a 15 yo redditor calling you fat and/or a DYEL.

I like the general message in your videos. Basically if you wanna stay natural, bulk and get stronger, then cut when you need to. You will be able to maintain a lot of your gains when you cut. Pretty simple and straight forward. Personally I was really afraid for a while to bulk because I had been really overweight for many years. It makes sense though that you can’t eat your way from 150 to 180 at a 100 calorie surplus. So, I’m bulking. It’s a bit uncomfortable, but I’m getting noticeably stronger. Thanks for the great advice!
One of my best friends 5 year old son has abs. Iv had to train and suffer my ass off for years to get my abs to show. It’s life fellas. Don’t cry about it. Play the cards your dealt the best you can.
I just realized I've been watching your videos for over 2 years now. I went from watching Greg D.'s videos and being on my way to becoming underweight if I kept eating like I was (the goodold analbowling cookbook tips) for a few more months to now being able to deadlift 140 kg cause guess what, I started eating big (at least for a girl my size)... I will always remember your video essay destroying Greg, forever a classic
I have to admit that you're right when you said that you need to train abs to make them visible. I did train the abs, without even progressive overloading and while they're still not visisble they got bigger because my belly just changed its shape... the rough outline of abs started to get visisble. Thankfully i got an abdominal crunch machine that i can progressive overload on it and yeah it feels amazing for the abs ngl.
5:46 When I was much younger and obese, overly-chunky legs were actually a fairly big problem. So much so that they regularly chafed red when I walked to and from school. At times, they looked like they had a sunburn and it was especially bad during the summer with sweat going into that mix of misery. Would not recommend. Thankfully no longer an issue, but it does happen to some men. My best friend had the same problem, just not quite as bad as me due to never getting over 40% body fat.
People influencing people to not train their obliques are hurting physiques. I have a bit of fat around my midsection while being 16-18% body fat and trained obliques helps my midsection look more defined and aesthetic imo.
That’s spot on. Bodyfat distribution and actual lean mass are factors people don’t think about. I store a lot of fat in my abdominal area and love handles but I store less in my face then most people and can still have a visible jawline while overweight. I literally got visible shoulder veins before I got visible abs despite the Abs seeming more common.
I swear my shoulders, chest and arms will look like 12% at 15%, but then my stomach looks like 20. I got that videogame ogre build where i have jacked arms and chest but a bowling ball belly.
If you're under 170 lbs and not a totally tiny manlet and under 25 - bulk. I'm 44 5'10 and 180 pounds and lean. Been training naturally for 20 years. I'm aesthetic. I have actual muscle. I want to lose 10 pounds now Again - if you're under 150 pounds and are asking about bulking and cutting - bulk.

Does there need to be a maintenance phase in between a cut before returning to my bulk? I always do a short maintenance after a bulk to get used to my new maintenance but I’m not sure if it matters in the other direction.
Matt your looking wide bro. And you don’t look like you have a Super wide frame. I have a very wide cromial width (22.8 inches) and your starting to look like me bro 👍 13:00 also to add to the e waist conversation, when someone has obliques like that, it’s more than likely not big obliques, it’s the structure of your HIPS your. That first guy was really lean, but it still looked like he had love handles, that’s because no matter how much he cuts he’ll never be able to get rid of them, that’s his hips. What women are attracted to is the best point. Anyone who thinks 20% bodyfat is too much is misguided. Women are attracted to big strong disciplined men. Stop trying to impress dudes. A 550lb deadlift is more impressive than visible abs.
A lot of guys online see girls say they like abs, so that’s all they go off. Reality is most women also like higher body fat if the guy is built. Women don’t obsess over physique details unless they’re bodybuilders themselves, and even then, they don’t care about that in a partner like a lot of guys think.
What is crazy is that having most of the fat in the midsection is probably the most advantageous for survival. Having fat in your limbs burn more energy because of the higher moment of inertia in your limbs, meaning any change of direction in your limbs takes more energy and are also somewhat slower.
Have you ever heard of injury from Rdl or split squatting. When I bring my chest to my knees when I do Rdl I get pain in my hip/glutes and was wondering if you had any thoughts
Does body fat have any effect though on gaining muscle if you're massively over weight? I saw some articles online that say the 15 percentage range is great for building muscle but anything over this makes you insulin resistant? Then some articles saying the more body fat you have the better for building muscle? Does any of this matter? I'd love your thoughts. Thank you
I never heard of being at a normal body fat level causing insulin resistance. after training, what you need to build muscle is the raw energy to do so. if the calories arent there, the muscle cant grow. you can get your calorie surplus by eating 500 calories extra every day, but for most people this is going to be challenging to pull off consistently. however if you're already at a reasonably high body fat percentage, your body becomes more likely to use your own fat stores for fuel as needed. assuming everything else is the same, effort, consistency, intensity, etc.. a fat guy who is over-eating will always gain muscle more quickly than a skinny guy who is under-eating
First example just needs a bit more size in the lats to make a more seamless transition. If the dude at 11:50 would just pick his damn shorts up he wouldn’t have “love handles” lol. He’d have a normal waist.
What many people also don’t understand is that it’s bodyfat PERCENTAGE, so even if you had the exact same bodyfat mass as earlier, you would have a smaller bodyfat PERCENTAGE with more muscle, because the fat is a smaller percentage of the body’s total mass
I wonder if there is a point between maladaptive volume (beyond overreaching/far beyond MRV) and rhabdo that you can train for hypotrophy to shrink the waist/neck
I have loose skin from weight loss and it sucks! BIA testing consistently shows me close to 10% bodyfat and based on veins and fat everywhere I am def between 10 and 15. I'll never see abs except my obliques (which are sharp and popping now) cause of the skin but it makes me want to cut all the time like I have a belly pouch I should shrink. BF is HARD to judge if you have loose skin from getting too fat.
@REVIVALFitness Not yet, I've lost 90lbs of fat and am still gaining muscle. I want to see what tightens over a year of bulking slowly and letting the skin turn over. Trying to build more chest and back mass to see if that pulls things tight enough I'm happy.
Excellent video. I had a dexa scan yesterday and was 7.3% body fat but don't look like the pictures in the 7% to 8% range. Age is a factor he did not mention.
12:20 That's not fat btw, he has a really wide oblique which sticks out. Similar example is CR7, he also has wide obliques, it is genetics, can't really do much about it (maybe don't train abs directly with weight but that's it basically)
Yo Revival what bodyfat % do you feel the most balanced at? In terms of strength, Testosterone levels, Libido, athletic ability but while still looking reasonably lean?
Hey man, im currently over 20% bf. been training for a few months on a small cut. lost about 15ish pounds. I want to gain muscle mass, would you recommend a cut until i’m lower bf or should I just bulk
Great video, but I have a question. I'm of West African descent and know I have good genetics for muscle building, so should get lean now to get to the desired body fat I want and bulk in the future or should I just bulk? As of right now I can't really go to the gym and I don't have the resources to train for hypertrophy so I just stick to home workouts.
one of the reasons i am such a fan of dexas is that i feel like there’s less “well established” numbers and bodyfat% examples for the gym girlies when bulking/cutting. i’m planning to get prettyyyy heavy this bulk (likely 180-185 at 5’8) and i wouldn’t have dared to even CONSIDER these weights without seeing my bodyfat% and lack of visceral fat with a dexa
Those are muscles not fat, especially when someone's training their core somewhat correctly they'll develop the lower obliques and then they protrude outwards, so instead of getting obsessed with removing the fat that's not even there, just relax and train
I like to estimate with a combination of math and visuals. A guy who’s most likely natural 6’3 250 has people who don’t know any better saying he’s only 20% body fat bc his belly isn’t noticeably fat. That would mean he’s on par with Chris Bumstead in lean mass 🤣
"Never heard a guy complaining about chunky legs" Actually that's my problem. When I gain weight my legs get really huge like a freaking woman, it's horrible. Not much of a gut but my legs get really big like tree trunks. Weird body fat distribution it seems (testosterone is fine, before anyone asks haha).
Trust the Ronaldo thing isn’t genetic. It’s cause of the amount of cardio they do and Ronaldo’s a freak on clean eating. I play soccer and EVERYONE I play with around my age is somehow sub 13 percent bf with no effort
The blocky waist is from bone structure and muscle insertions (and fat distribution too in the case of guys that have real love handles). Not training your abs and obliques spares you MAYBE an inch on your waist after a few years. But as you already know, an inch on your waist doesn't make or break a physique. There are examples of guys who make the blocky waist look aesthetic, precisely because they have well developed abs/obliques. Look at Natural Hypertrophy and Gravity Training as examples. If their waist was 1" smaller, but they had tiny/non existent abs, they would look worse. Personally I don't think it's a balancing act at all. Getting thick muscular abs and obliques is always a positive.
Let's be honest . Very few guys have the dedication to put out the effort to be in the gym for year after year to gain the muscle to look good .. they'd rather get a tattoo and grow a shitty looking beard 😂😂.
@@REVIVALFitness lol yeah the I got a tax return tat guy 😆. I'm kinda joking about all this but you've seen the guy I'm talking about . Hey on another note I like your content and videos.
Idk about that one there's also a lot of guys that tend to enter a dreamer bulk when they do that, thinking it's all muscle and they didn't get that fat at all
Cristiano Ronaldo was not that shredded and diced before 2005. With hard work and dedication, Ronaldo deserved his body, so technically not a lottery. Also, his son was trained by Cristiano himself and he disciplined him from a young age to always have a professional and consistent diet and training. For reference look at some photos of Ronaldo when he was frail and looking like a stick 20 years from now.

What many people also don’t understand is that it’s bodyfat PERCENTAGE, so even if you had the exact same bodyfat mass as earlier, you would have a smaller bodyfat PERCENTAGE with more muscle, because the fat is a smaller percentage of the body’s total mass
I'm seriously starting to think I got body dysmorphia can I send you a few pic
I wonder if there is a point between maladaptive volume (beyond overreaching/far beyond MRV) and rhabdo that you can train for hypotrophy to shrink the waist/neck
Overtrain your abs to where they shrink?
I have loose skin from weight loss and it sucks! BIA testing consistently shows me close to 10% bodyfat and based on veins and fat everywhere I am def between 10 and 15. I'll never see abs except my obliques (which are sharp and popping now) cause of the skin but it makes me want to cut all the time like I have a belly pouch I should shrink. BF is HARD to judge if you have loose skin from getting too fat.
Have you considered surgery? I don’t think there’s any other way to really get rid of it
@REVIVALFitness Not yet, I've lost 90lbs of fat and am still gaining muscle. I want to see what tightens over a year of bulking slowly and letting the skin turn over. Trying to build more chest and back mass to see if that pulls things tight enough I'm happy.
Bro just needed to pull his pants up 💀
What would you say your bodyfat is in the thumbnail mk? I remeber thats from your competition prep last year .
Excellent video. I had a dexa scan yesterday and was 7.3% body fat but don't look like the pictures in the 7% to 8% range. Age is a factor he did not mention.
🤝 7.3% is mad impressive
12:20 That's not fat btw, he has a really wide oblique which sticks out. Similar example is CR7, he also has wide obliques, it is genetics, can't really do much about it (maybe don't train abs directly with weight but that's it basically)
Ronaldo is ripped, his ab genes are wild.
Ive just stopped caring abt fat at this point. Let me just get strong as shit, and ill be good.
Yup, anyone can diet down in a few months, while building muscle takes years of effort
So should the guy at 5:00 cut?
Thoughts on V-Neck T-shirts tho?
I used to have a very tight one when I was much slimmer.
@@REVIVALFitness let me guess, compression shirt?
Yo Revival what bodyfat % do you feel the most balanced at? In terms of strength, Testosterone levels, Libido, athletic ability but while still looking reasonably lean?
Probably 12-13 ish
Hey man, im currently over 20% bf. been training for a few months on a small cut. lost about 15ish pounds. I want to gain muscle mass, would you recommend a cut until i’m lower bf or should I just bulk
i weigh 165 and i’m 5’7
Zoomers with gym brainrot on their way to comment "the cut is gonna be insane" under a guy who's 14% bf
Why not train for hypertrophy at home? There’s a ton you can do with bodyweight, dumbbells…maybe some rings or pull-up bar
Stiff leg deadlifts or RDLs?
one of the reasons i am such a fan of dexas is that i feel like there’s less “well established” numbers and bodyfat% examples for the gym girlies when bulking/cutting. i’m planning to get prettyyyy heavy this bulk (likely 180-185 at 5’8) and i wouldn’t have dared to even CONSIDER these weights without seeing my bodyfat% and lack of visceral fat with a dexa
That's a good point. You got lean on the cut so you will have a lot of room.
Looking beefy brah 😊
💪🏼😈
No t-shirts allowed.
❌
Those are muscles not fat, especially when someone's training their core somewhat correctly they'll develop the lower obliques and then they protrude outwards, so instead of getting obsessed with removing the fat that's not even there, just relax and train
Or they could have bigger hip bones that could be the cause
Yes
I have such shitty fat storage genes that even with hollow cheeks and ripped arms, I can never see a full six pack.
Sounds like you just haven't built the muscle enough yet. Time to bulk 💪😏
It's gonna take time. More muscle never hurts.
love handles curse
I’d assume that just really comes down to genetics
What BF % does Strong AF convert to?
Olympian weightlifters can be 400+ lbs. So probably as big as you can get without impacting mobility of the move.
@@soonahero Yeah, Lasha is huge but insanely strong and mobile too.
Full
My body fat % is fat.
Are you still natural?
i'm a bloatlord. more like 20 percent honestly
Bloatlord is like 30% minimum
@@REVIVALFitness I gotta get to work.
Trust the Ronaldo thing isn’t genetic. It’s cause of the amount of cardio they do and Ronaldo’s a freak on clean eating. I play soccer and EVERYONE I play with around my age is somehow sub 13 percent bf with no effort
He has spiderweb abs though, which plenty of lean guys don't. That is absolutely genetic.
Getting thick muscular abs and obliques is always a positive.
.
Let's be honest . Very few guys have the dedication to put out the effort to be in the gym for year after year to gain the muscle to look good .. they'd rather get a tattoo and grow a shitty looking beard 😂😂.
Hey now. Many of the tattoo/big beard guys also hit the gym now.
My favorite is, as I call it, the no personality forearm tattoo
@@REVIVALFitness lol yeah the I got a tax return tat guy 😆. I'm kinda joking about all this but you've seen the guy I'm talking about . Hey on another note I like your content and videos.
key takeway from this video : if you don't have abs, YOU ARE FAT!!!
Just bulk till you feel shame looking in the mirror.
The problem is that a lot of young dudes feel shame even when they're already on the skeletor route
Idk about that one there's also a lot of guys that tend to enter a dreamer bulk when they do that, thinking it's all muscle and they didn't get that fat at all
That's not even fat. There's muscle right over the hip bone. It's supposed to look this way
Eh... Should have watched to the end first 😅
Nah he's obese
Cristiano Ronaldo was not that shredded and diced before 2005. With hard work and dedication, Ronaldo deserved his body, so technically not a lottery. Also, his son was trained by Cristiano himself and he disciplined him from a young age to always have a professional and consistent diet and training.
For reference look at some photos of Ronaldo when he was frail and looking like a stick 20 years from now.
Fair, but you don’t get to his level without elite genetics, at least for his sport.
Ofc, well said @@REVIVALFitness
looking wide
I’m 8% 235lbs and no Ronaldo is not genetically gifted
One of the greatest soccer players ever isn’t genetically gifted… right.
Soccer yes, Bodybuilding NO, Example Tom Brady
You cut your beard to the perfect chizzled look, & it makes you look try hard. You take yourself too seriously.
