I'm really glad that Gentaro was right up front about protecting his mom. Kintaro was with her as well. She did stand up and fight back for herself, but I'm really glad she had Gentaro. When he sat with her and checked her wound, I was really proud of him. She received so much support from boys. Kintaro was stroking her face and patting her, which seemed to help her calm down. She was pretty stressed at first, but Kintaro helped smooth her out a little. We can't tell from the video what set Momotaro off, but usually it's over food. And even then, he doesn't usually do more than hit. I've never seen him actually bite another of his family. That's too bad that this happened. I hope Genki feels better soon.

The two things that trigger Momo are first food, and second jealousy, something happened between them that we missed, I believe he thought Genki was eating food that was rightfully his. How courageous of her little boys they didn't care how big he is, hurt their Mum and there's going to be a big fight. Momo looked a bit sheepish afterward he knew he had messed up.

Ahh, I think I see why it happened. Gentaro was being rough with Kintaro and toppled him very rudely, and I assume Kintaro must have cried out as Genki and Momotaro both started to approach. However, Momotaro must have seen Genki's approach as an attack on Kintaro, so he jumped in the way to fight her off not realizing that she was trying to aid him. Silverbacks instinctively rush to defend their children regardless of who was to blame. It's a survival skill, but it's not without room for error. Regardless, both Kintaro and Gentaro were swift to identify the mistake and correct Momotaro. I'm always amazed how quickly gorillas will forgive and forget.

I love how the sons naturally protect their mom. Same as my kiddos!! Momma didnt do anything. That was mean. Usually she would get a couple hours a day away from them all. Genki would forage just far enough for the silverback to call them back to help with the kiddos. Maybe they need space to get away but not see each other but same enclosure.New enriching toys, etc. Move the ropes around a bit.

There is another video out there that shows Gentaro giving his father a dirty/disappointing look for hurting Genki.

I hope she received wound care, 10 days of antibiotics, and medication for pain control. It was clear she was in pain the way she kept holding and tending to her arm. Even the other gorillas knew exactly where she was bitten and tried to help in their limited way. The big silverback that bit her may need to be roomed by himself if he keeps attacking and hurting the other gorillas. Poor girl, she is so sweet and such a good mother.
