I absolutely love you guys. Super cool father/son dynamic, makes me so excited to be a dad and do this with my son. Preston’s gotta be the best shop assistant I’ve ever seen, wish I had him to help me on my XJ! Keep putting out great videos guys, god bless you!
You guys are top notch on things. I love the way you intereact with each other a handicap does not limit these two. Keep doing this the LORD is showing us what yall can do.
I think that is so cool that you let you son help you like that. What a great dad. I try letting my son help me but he always wants to take something else off that don't need to be. Lol. God bless you and your family. Have a great day. 👍
Thank you both so much. My offroad sleigh has been giving me grief for some time now and I've spent more money than I should have to fix the problem. Santa's going to have to leave something special for both of you under the tree this year. On a side note, Preston's smile in infectious and Mrs. Claus says Preston is "Just the cutest and most precious mechanic she's ever seen."
Hey Preston...I'm Preston too....I have an XJ too..... and I like to keep my hands clean too! ( I don't know if they make the latex gloves small enough for your hands, but that's how I help keep my hands clean...kinda lol!)
Good job fellers. Preston now that you know how to do that, you can come do my old 88 XJ. I've already been through the same steps you guys have up to that point. I picked up a new starter this morning because the old one was starting to give up, so I figure might as well to both at the same time. Have fun wheeling guys! Thanks for the videol
Your sensor is not the same as his . Your 88 has a 2 wire sensor that generates voltage. His is a 3 wire sensor with a reference 5 volt signal .Yours can be adjusted by carefully tapping it closer to the flywheel .You want it over .500 millivolts while cranking .I used to get them over .750 without hitting the flywheel .
Well done. Hope that fixes the problem! My 97 ZJ 4L hade the same problem but the fix for me was replacing the pcm with a updated one from pick and pull hope yours is fixed
It's funny you mention that. I actually went to a local pick in pull to see if I could salvage a mopar CPS from an XJ, but the transmission and engine were already gone. Here's to hoping the Duralast brand lasts...at least until the mopar version gets shipped.
Hi Preston, my name is Brian and I am including my daughter with the restoration of her jeep - I think what you are doing is super cool!!! Can you include the part number for the CPS and where you ordered it from? From one dad to another - keep rocking in the sandbox!
Thanks! Sounds like ya’ll have a fun project on your hands too. We ended up buying the Durlast SU3224 crankshaft position sensor from Autozone bc of shipping issues with the mopar brand. Knock on wood, but we’ve had zero issues with it since we installed it.
Sorry- I just saw this. Went and looked at the harness. The wire color- looking at the wires feeding into the plug with the release tab visible- goes left red, middle black, and right white. Hope that helps.
i have 6 bad crank sensors sitting in a box behind me all because i kept buying the cheep ones. auto zone wanted $80 when their cheapest use to be $12. get a ntk one from rock auto, it really is like the best one you can get.
Oh man, I hope we don’t go through 6 of them- that would not be fun lol. Thanks for the tip on the NTK from rock auto. We’ll keep that in mind if the Duralast one craps out on us because the Mopar one never came.
My CPS went out about 4 years ago and I didn't have much money at the time so went with a Standard brand CPS - even though I was pre warned not to cheap out. Maybe I was lucky but it's been perfect so far. Used standard also for my cam sensor and other parts - no issues so far. I did use NTK for my O2 sensors though...
@@andrewcheatle4691 i might just have terrible luck then. the dealership was only able to get newer styles and all the cheaper ones broke on me within minutes, the part store ones lasted a few month each, but the rock auto ntk made it run smoother than it ever has.
I’m not misfiring or throwing codes, but when idling hot or cold the tach bounces and idles a little rough. Occasionally I’ll stall out. Did you have a similar rough idle like mine?
That’s how it started and then progressively got worse over the course of a couple months. I don’t think a code popped up until it stalled for the first time.
Ive been putting off doing my CPS for like 3 months now. cracked the housing when I rebuilt my trans, ended up JB welding the crack for the time being, but its definitely got some intermittent issues
My 98 xj only stalls when I’m doing heavy off roading and i gotta let it rest for a couple mins and turns back on but in the city it drives perfectly fine no rough idle it doesn’t stall could it still be the crank position sensor??
It could be the start of one going bad, but that is odd it does it while off-roading and not city driving. When it does stall, are you at crazy angles?
@@sandbox_adventures fixed my problem my man, it was the crank position sensor now she stays on while off roading no problems, thanks for the info brother ✌🏼
My '97 does it every once in a while, but turning the ignition on/off 5 times quickly resets it. Computer has to re-learn everything, but it's not too bad.
im just wondering if this solved the idle issue you were having ive been chasing the something ive replaced everything on the throttle body and still have issue with idle but when in gear no high idle
We’ve been issue free since we installed the Crankshaft position sensor. If that didn’t work for us, we were going to look into the Camshaft position sensor next. Hope that helps and good luck!
ive changed my crank sensor, cam sensor, plugs, cap rotor, and im still misfiring and sputtering. gonna try and change o2 sensor but even unplugged nothing changes. im thinking bad PCM. i am getting the same code p1391 after all parts replacements. im also getting a p1698 no ccd trans bus messages (bad tcm?)
Whoa, that sounds super frustrating! I've read in the jeep forums that sometimes aftermarket parts can be faulty and send you down a rabbit hole thinking it is something else b/c you just replaced the part. I'm still waiting on the mopar CPS myself. Hopefully swapping the PCM will get you running. Good luck!
@@sandbox_adventures yeah what's weird is every time i change a part things work then new shit breaks. currently i am sputtering because my battery wont hit the proper voltage. before it was not doing that. i am assuming all the damage these other misfires caused, made the alternator shit the bed. going to try, o2s, alternator, fuel pump, then ive got nothing left but the pcm. i will; try and come back to update yall
I had similar problems and replaced plugs, wires, coil, distributer, crank/cam sensor...but only when I replaced the O2 sensors did it cure it. NTK are the ones to go for, good luck 👍
@@andrewcheatle4691 im wondering if its really going to be that easy. Right now she wont even crank over fully. She sputters and spits and pops and battery guage is not going up all the way. seems like everyday its getting worse. Im changing the o2 tomorrow morning. If that fails im gonna try another PCM
Oh dang, that would be super frustrating for sure! I was starting to get a little nervous at what the next solution would be if it wasn’t the crankshaft position sensor after messing with the throttle body. I think the camshaft position sensor was next on my list but luckily we didn’t need to go there.

It definitely wasn't the easiest sensor to reach, but the Sandbox goes vroom now so it was worth it!
Love Preston's RUclips channel!! So awesome 😊

It’s easier to remove it from the top. Unbolt the fuel like off the intake and get you an 11mm wrench. Takes me 10 minutes.

I guess it worked!
So far so good! We have about a week of drive time in it now and still holding strong ... knock on wood lol

Agreed. Hoping this one at least lasts long enough that I forget how much of a pain it was to reach it.
