Honestly, Ed getting visibly shaken from being called short like he was having some sort of ptsd breakdown was the best way I've seen a live adaptation take on an over reacting angry anime character, fucking hilarious 10/10
One thing that's always bothered me about the live action FMA movies: The aesthetic of the FMA world has always had a distinctly Germanic feel to it; the architecture, the trains, the cars, the friggin' tanks when they appear at the end, they all look unmistakably German. Hell, they use snippets of the German language, the nation has a strong militaristic structure to it, and I'm not the only one to notice the whole Amerstrians being blonde and blue-eyed is pretty... Ayrian, right? So then, with such strong and blatant German aesthetics and themes as a core part of the anime, why did WB Japan decide to film the live action films... in Italy?
And Netflix had the nerve to notify me when this was made available as if I was going to react like Cinderella at midnight at the ball and dramatically drop everything to watch it

You know- Ed's actor looks like a cosplayer having the time of his life. Guys, I know this doesn't hold up to either of the aninated shows, but let's just let him have this. He's living his best life right now.
They ALL look like cosplayers making the movie on their own fan work x'D and somehow got lucky to film it in Italy, cause it's as close as they could get to germany and they all slayed their costumes! + a lovely Al and they knew how to act, enough honestly, that alone made it a win in my books ^_^
As someone who lives in Japan, I remember how they marketed this here, and I can PROMISE you that nobody who doesn't already watch the anime is checking this out here. It was marketed as a sort of celebratory adaptation that isn't meant to stand on its own, it's just supposed to be a thing where fans go and see it just to see how (insert moment here) would look in live action. I do agree that that makes this entire film and any other fma live action films useless and unessacary, but it's not a super high concept project, and it isn't anything more than a reason to talk about FMA again during its release anniversary.
That's kind of how I took it as well. I wasn't really expecting much more than a fun romp, and I wasn't really disappointed. Well, I was definitely disappointed with Armstrong, and kind of with Kimblee as well, but it certainly was far from the worst thing I've seen.
That’s how it came across for me. It was something dumb to do for 2 hours and at least it was more related to the original than the Attack on Titan movies 😵

I feel like the faithful to a fault design of Alphonse in this movie is pretty emblematic of the messed up priorities of these movies. They could have just redesigned him to look more like an actual suit of armour that someone might feasibly wear, and then just have him be portrayed by a big guy in a suit which would look a lot more convincing and cost a fraction as much. Instead he's got to look EXACTLY like he does in the anime even if it's totally impractical and doesn't translate well to live action at all.
so much this. i feel this is a big issue with alot of characterr designs across the board.they have to look exaclty like the anime , let alone that the art in the anime is just trying to depict real life in animation. so even basic stuff like spikes out fit in bebop or eds outfit here looks stylized and goofy . like spike is just aguy in a nice suit with dress shirt and tie suit have him wher that , not match the exact shade of every article to the point it looks like a costume not like a thing someone would really wear irl.
Yeah, you could very easily have an actual suit and use green screen editing to erase the parts of the actor so the suit still looks hollow. Tons of modern movies, even lower budget ones, mix practical and cg effects like this
The only reason I can think of is making Ed look short. Ed spends more time next to Al than anyone else and having Al be an actor (of average height) in a suit stand beside Ed (probably also average) would undermine Ed's shortness and Al hugeness - remember he's about as big as Armstrong in the show. Still that's not a very good reason, though. A positive of Al's CG design is that those scenes where it's raining but all the other actors are bone dry, Al is the only one with realistic raindrops on him, ironically making him the realest looking one there at least in my eyes.
Or they could have used practical effects and made Alphonse a puppet like the raptors in Jurassic Park. It would have looked more realistic, gave the actors something psychical to react to, and would have cost less.

Ling and the VA for him was the only kind of saving grace for this film. I mean the costume is a little bit too on the nose but yup that’s Ling. The Xing characters were the only people that made sense to have had East Asian actors.
My absolute favorite movie fuckup is when they do a flashback and they somehow cut to another character's perspective that the person having the flashback had no way of knowing or even knew existed. Glad to see this dumpster fire also hit that time honored trope
It worked in the original because the flashback in question was simultaneously Hawkeye telling Ed about the war and Marcoh telling Scar about it. Without the latter, this makes no sense.
It’s really weird to me that they had Scar be a Japanese actor. Normally it wouldn’t be such a big deal - but in the original series the character of Scar is *explicitly* a commentary on race, colonialism, violence and the shared humanity among people. Having Scar be Japanese is like trying to do Apocalypse Now where all the American soldiers are played by Vietnamese actors.
It's not that weird at all. For years, Hollywood would just cast white people as any ethnicity and just makeup to make them brown or black or yellow or whatever. Japan is just doing the exact same thing here. It's literally blackface
The FMA author was an Ainu woman, which is an ethnic minority in Japan, historically treated like absolute shit. The treatment of the Ainu was actually her inspiration for the Ishbals.
Mackenyu looked fine as Scar but I reckon his real life father Sonny Chiba (rip) would be a much better choice to play Wrath/Bradley. Sonny Chiba did star in a movie based on a Hong Kong comic and he literally slayed that movie.
Exactly this. At the very least he should've been Ainu, since that was one of the main sources of inspiration for Ishval, along with Jewish people and most likely brown Arabs. The only thing I liked about the first movie is that Scar WASN'T included. I hate this.

Could we just acknowledge that some things are animated because that's the medium that works best for the story they're trying to tell? It's the same problem I have with Disney movie adaptations. They aren't better when they're remade into live action.
Contrary to things like Dragon Ball or One Piece (we've yet to see what it'll look like, but I'm pessimistic) I think FMA could work in live action, but it should be rewritten a bit for the pacing to match a movie trilogy instead of trying to stay as close as the series as possible. And also... y'know, done with more care than what was put in this project.
Exactly. Some things should be left animated. Live action ≠ better, and frankly, I'd say live action is honestly worse 100% of the time. I prefer animated adaptations of live-action properties to the inverse.

A lot of these stories aren't inherently better because the medium is particularly suited to them but because they were written to suit the medium. Straight Disney adaptations don't work because a lot of the scenes were written specifically to work within or to show off the talent of the animators. Think the ballroom scene in Beauty and The Beast. That sweeping camera work isn't particularly interesting in live action but is an absolute flex on the part of the animators and looks amazing because it's absurdly difficult perspective work done to an intense level of competency. I think Marvel Studios has kinda given execs brainrot because Marvel translates comic books really well into films. And it involves seasoned film directors and writers doing a spin on characters and writing stories that convey the essence of those characters meant for a 120 minute film. A good FMA film wouldn't simply rehash the plot points of the anime and manga, it'd need to be a new story that conveys the themes and ideas. Not to say it can't borrow from the anime and manga, that's the whole point of adaptation, but like... You need to write a film screenplay for a film. Netflix FMA is only written in one sense of the word.

People lining up for miles to see Hunter X Hunter: Chimera Ant Part 2. Countless RUclips videos fan casting their ideal Z Fighters. People getting sick of the genre after ten years and saying “it was simpler when it was just Astro Boy. When even IS a Bebop?!”

Every once in a while there will be someone who concedes that “I guess the live action Spider-Man movie was *okay* but you’re still way better off just reading the comic or watching the cartoon”
I think the YYH Live Adaptation might actually kill me. FMA was close. It made me feel pain and tear up in a bad way and I’ve only seen this as my preview to those movies. If Armstrong is this bad, Lord knows how bad Toguro will look.
I… would’ve liked that. It would’ve been more like a real movie that connects to FMA more than a total rehash. Maybe have it take place from the perspective of the Ishvalan civilians to twist the knife.
I love how they focused on getting the costume exactly like the manga because that is the important part not the story. Like if they just had Armstrong be bald it would have been better.
The thing is comics/animation often exaggerate features to make up for the lack of details the human eye uses for face recognition; so you make the glasses more pronounced, the hair more distinct, their build approaches extremes. That's not required in live action so Armstrong should have been an actual 50-60 bodybuilder with the haircut of a 19th century Austrian
I'm shocked no one commented on the fact that Todd Haberkorn (Ling Yao's English VA for FMA:B) literally voiced Ling Yao in the English dub of this live action. I was shocked when I heard his voice at the 21:20 mark. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Now I'm wondering who else agreed to voice their character again for the English dub.....and who needed the cash badly enough to do it, since this is a real steaming pile.
I still standby my statement that the first one would've been infinitely more entertaining if they just made Tucker a megalomaniac who wanted to turn the whole world into dogs. If you're gonna make him a straight up super villain, go all the way with it! It still would have been dog shit, but at least it would've fun.
When you said "The Revenge of Scar" I kept waiting for a punchline regarding a Lion King sequel or something but then as the video kept going I was shocked to realize that was the actual subtitle of the film.
With a subtitle like "The Revenge of Scar" it made me think about the idea of a Lion King sequel where Scar (the lion one, not the FMA one) came back from beyond the grave to kill Simba of some other evil shit like that. Still would have been a better idea to pursue than making this movie.
Scar (the lion one, not the FMA one) did come back in The Lion Guard cartoon as a spirit made out of fire to lead some hyenas (but not the same ones from the films) to help take out the lion guard (literal children), and take over again or something. It was... not as metal as it sounded but it sure did happen.

The first third doesn't really have a plot, they just help a bunch of animals. Then the 2nd third is about Volcano Ghost Scar. But then he's defeated and the last third is about the journey to the tree of life or something. That just kinda spits in the face of the three act structure, doesn't it? I mean, imagine if Avatar had no mention of Ozai or the Fire Nation in S1, it was just Aang helping random people. Then the 2nd season introduces Ozai and he's defeated in the S2 finale. And the 3rd season is about saving the last Lion Turtle or something.

Cosplayers make more anime accurate costumes than these. What was their budget on the movie? This is the stuff fans of FMA need to really worry about, not SpyXFamily ranking higher.
I get that they want to make the characters resemble their original manga counterparts, but the character designs just do not work in live action when translated so literally. They really needed to tweak something on the more exaggerated features to avoid them looking too goofy. Armstrong is a prime example - his design is intentionally a little silly looking but it works well enough as a drawing in a comic book and as an animated cartoon, but looks painfully out of place in live action. Especially when nobody else looked like they belonged in the same movie with him.
THIS. It’s like trying to make All Might from my hero academia into a one to one example - even though his design is an intentional callback to 90’s style of American superhero comics.
This is what Marvel understands that nobody else seems to; you don't need to look the same, it needs to *feel* the same, and animation/comics/live action have very different "feels"
They could've just thrown a bald bodybuilder or Dwayne Johnson into an Amestrian military uniform, and I would've accepted that as Armstrong, yet they somehow managed something worse than the laziest possible option.
I haven't actually watched them, but aren't the LOTR movies also like, 3+ hours each? edit: ok, the first two are just about 3 hours and the third is a little over 3 hours. That being said, if they did it right, I would totally watch three movies of FMA that spans 9 hours.
something that really makes this movie awkward to watch is, and I'm not knowledgeable about movies enough to know how to call it, the "this is just somewhere in Italy" effect. I don't know what exactly they forgot to add or remove from the scenarios in post production, or during filming, but the characters and everything they interact with or that is part of the fantasy setting feels like it is completely out of place and just places in front of, like, a random hotel in Umbria.

I'm sure the director knew they were on a shoestring budget, so I get why they wouldn't want to put in any props that they'd have to edit out, but they could have at least TRIED to make a creative workaround. I think that Scar is the most important character (aside from ed and al) in FMA, and seeing what they did to him is so depressing lol also why is Mae so tall? Just feels wrong.

Honestly this feels is one of the few movies where it would likely been better off with a western studio at least with the casting. Also they did Armstrong dirty just from what I'm seeing.
The one time I'll say that it would be cool to see a western studio do a darker interpretation of the story. Not a one on one remake cause it won't work for this IP, but the concept would make for a good gritty retelling
This reminds me of the issues with the live action avatar movie. both of the source materials deal with imperialism, genocide, the value of human life even lives of your enemies and colonialism while at the same time making jokes and light hearted fun. I haven't seen live action writing yet that can marry those themes effectively.
Deathnote and Cowboy Bebop are the easiest anime IPs to adapt, and Netflix still managed to muck it up. They should really give up on adapting anime to live action.
At least with Death Note they tried to mix up things by exchanging the personalities of Light and Misa between them. The problem was that the MC was still Light, and with Misa's lack of self respect and agency, he was expected to carry the movie.
Easy to go 'LOL Netflix', but... C'mon folks. This is WB Japan and WB Japan only, the sequels were planned and in production well before Netflix bought the rights to distribute even the first film on their platform. 'Netflix Original' is the same thing as 'Crunchyroll Originals'--its more a thing for them to slap on any random old thing, than it is an actual mark of the platform's involvement. Meanwhile, I'm curious how they're going to shoehorn Greed, Ling meeting Greed, Ling becoming Greed, Greedling becoming friends with everyone, and the whole Greedling-Father end of the finale here. There is... a WHOOOLE lotta junk there that's going to need smushing, and I cannot estimate the amount of flaming bags of fecal matter that's going to get stepped on with it. I haven't watched this one. The first one and the wobbly foam teeth on Gluttony as he waddled after a soldier was enough for me--the Flame spritz Alchemist Roy Mustang was just a... disappointing plastic cherry on that cake. So much of everything just lacks impact, even Armstrong in those few shots I've seen. And Armstrong is literally nothing but impact. That entire final battle against Father? Literally all impactful killer, no filler. And I doubt WB Japan gave their VFX crew the budget to even approach doing the Wrath vs. Scar fight--as well as the wild brawl with the Military--semi decently... Much less the massive finale. I cannot wait for Father to hold up a static JPG of the sun for that part.

Warner Bros is struggling financially & it doesn't help that people trash on their movies like this. I happened to really like this movie for what it was & can't wait for the 3rd Movie. For some reason I get the feeling there could be more than 3 films because of how early in the series the 2nd Movie ended. 1 of the things the movie does better than Brotherhood & the manga is the adaptation of Fuhrer King Bradley as all of his friendly roles were replaced by General Hakuro & you can tell he's always angry here even when having his calm conversations about Selim.

If a live action of FMA is EVER done. Set it up in germany or austria so you can have some really nice natural vistas and authentic cultural architecture. And yeah... its weird live action Ed not being white german is weird to me. There are actually asian characters in FMA. Ed and Al and Winry are not that.

And to a degree its neat to reference the original so loyally. for example? My criteria for a good and true ghost in the shell live action? 1. always use that opening text scroll. 2. section 9 deals with a hostage situation swiftly and quickly just to showcase the crew and their skills and it sets off the main plot. 3. after the text scroll, two helicopters must fly across the screen from the left to the right. 4. enka 5. at some point. jumping from a building and you see the major's active camo let her blend into the cityscape below. 6. the major rips something off its hinges to the point that it rips off her arm. If you manage to reference all these. You just demonstrated to me you know the ghost in the shell anime very well. I'd put my trust in you to not fk this up. As for the other live action movie I wanted done right? Death note. It can be done at a minimal budget. No CGI ryuk. Just Light Yagami, talking to a seemingly disembodied voice. But occasionally you see a strange shadow in the silouette of ryuk when Light gets cornered or finds out he's very nearly exposed. e.g. wen ray penber is spotted tailing him, L meets Light, etc. If I were to do it. I would use ryuk's voices as like a voice that speak out loud his doubts, his mistakes and his seemingly immense paranoia. The fans know its not just a crazy voice from his mind. But for the movie, its shot to imply to be that way. Its a different take, but builds on the idea than simply adapt it like these crappy movies have.
@@ceresbane I’d say just don’t do another live action Death Note if that’s what they want to do for Ryuk and the other Shinigami. The manga starts and ends with Ryuk, and the Shinigami all kind of play important rolls in the story later on. Making him a voice inside of Lights head with the occasional spoooky shadowy figure just sounds lazy. In all honesty, I always thought Death Note would be one of the easiest live action adaptions. The character designs are simple and believable, the “action” sequences are common in most movies and you could probably find locations to film at or build some basic set pieces when needed. All you would really need to focus the budget on are a few good actors for the important roles and a decent costume designer. The major chunk of the budget should go to the CGI for the Shinigami.
4:22 The Brotherhood anime used Barry the Chopper, the Slicer Brothers, and the Fifth Laboratory break in all together to lay the initial threads with Envy as well as raising Al's existential crisis (setting up for Ed's guilt reveal later on), whereas the "movie" just throws Ed off a train.
that's actually a pretty good point. that's a failry common practice in Japan already and I would have to say that, yes, anime tend to have "stage play energy" so it would actually work out quite well, I think.
My grandpa threw this movie on as background noise while I was visiting. It was only bearable because for some reason the dialogue was delayed by like 7 seconds.
Am I the only one who thinks that properties like Attack on Titan and Full Metal Alchemist would do best as live action if they let Hollywood do it? Like first off, the anime cast are already mostly western looking people, plus visual effects heavy shows like this could benefit from a bigger budget. Would I prefer they never do live action adaptations of these works instead? Oh definitely. But if they keep insisting to do them, at least make them look good.
Yeah... I didn't agree with Geoff on a lot of the good stuff he had to say when it came to the Cowboy Bebop adaptation, but he was 100% right about the casting. Just wouldn't be the same with a Japanese dude playing Jet. Of course, I also agree with him about the casting of Vicious, which was... really bad. So letting Hollywood handle things isn't exactly a guaranteed recipe for success either. *shrug*
Seeing what in the anime was a multi-racial cast boiled down just to Japanese actors is jarring. That alone is enough to make me avoid these movies, let alone all the flaws.
Just like the live action Attack on Titan abomination (I _will not_ call that a "movie"- you can't make me). Like... there's a whole storyline about how Mikasa is the only japanese person still alive in the Walls. The (admittedly false) idea that every race has been completely wiped off the face of the earth and forgotten about to the point where people don't even realize someone can be born with dark skin was part of the horror that made the series so good... but yeah, cast "EREN JÄGER" as a japanese guy- that makes sense. (I mean, I probably shouldn't use that as an example, since the only thing that tied the abomination to the anime/manga of the same name was the idea of Titans, and I think 3 characters who share names of characters from the OG series).
The sad thing is the western setting could’ve aided in appealing to mainstream audiences if Hollywood had deceided to throw money behind a big budget live action adaptation. Before the first “Netflix” live action fma came out I’d said for years fma would probably fare well in this scenario due to its western setting. Furthermore it would not get backlash for whitewashing like ghost in the shell did. Now this adaptation would probably scare any would be investors away for good
The worst thing is that had this series pulled a Rebuild of Eva and told a similar but very much made for movies story, it might have been a really good place for cautious newcomers to experience FMA in a format they don't have to invest as much time into. But that'd require competence.
I'm glad you took a note from Explanation point in this video, using clips with the video and audio from the dub, but overlaid the subtitles from the original audio version is really nice to have both dub and sub crowds see how dialogue is conveyed.
I see a lotta people in the comments saying "why couldn't they cast non-Japanese actors?" and as a Japanese person I have to say that's impossible if a movie is made in Japan. Japan is different from America, and it's not diverse because 95% (or something like that) of the people there are Japanese. There are like, 2 famous white people and it's impossible to have a "racially diverse" cast in a Japanese movie. I feel like this whole critique is so American -- not that that's a bad thing -- and kind of pushes American views on Japan. Idk, it just didn't sit right with me but it would all be fixed if this film was made in Hollywood or something with a waaay larger budget. But also this film did have a good budget, or I'm guessing so cause I recognize a bunch of the actors (like Edward is played by one of the most famous idols in japan). Japan just sucks at making live action things imo lmao.
So......don't adapt the anime where race is a very important to the story. It's so fucking simple. Being made in Japan doesn't excuse it, it just makes it look more pathetic that they thought it was a good idea despite the fact that they couldn't even do the bare minimum

@@kenshix7902 Idk my guy I can't speak for all Japanese people cause I'm just one person, but my best attempt at a guess is that 1. people don't consume American media as much because most people aren't fluent in English 2. Even if it's noticed, people don't consider it that big of an issue because they live in Japan and don't face daily discrimination or anything (sort of like how people just mock Engrish in Anime but don't consider it a serious issue). I do think there are some Japanese people speaking out? Idk? But it is a whole other country's media and most people can't be bothered. People from other countries don't care about America as much as Americans think.

Scar's story and the Ishval war of extermination are the best arcs I've ever seen in manga or anime. As someone who lives in a country that went through a military dictatorship in it's recent history, those stories connected with me deeply, in a way no other manga can hope to achieve, since it's very personal. To see it dissected to a poorly done highlight reel of just another popular product under WB's umbrella pisses me off tremendously.
I think live action only works for more realistic manga/anime. That's why Rurouni Kenshin works well in live action format and the likes of FMA and Dragon Ball flounder.
When it dropped it was also 2 full seconds off sync with the sound… not sure if they fixed that yet but honestly why would they. This was a YIKES from me dawg lol

@@SomeRandomJackAss I find it kinda sad that Japan is a decade behind when it comes to filming, especially in the VFX department. A lot of Japanese films and dramas are making Korean and Chinese works look like Hollywood standard in comparison. So far, Japan has mastered 2D art the best of Asian media; their manga and 2D (not 3D, still behind on that) animations are literal art, and outclass so many western artists (at times).

Those are my takeaways after watching this video: Winry's actress has been giving her all throughout the movie series, but the problem is that she's far less charismatic than her manga/anime counterpart. Ling's actor is more charismatic than Ed's, not a feat in itself but it's fitting considering that in the anime Ling is more charismatic than Ed, not a small feat at all there. I don't mind if May's actress isn't a child, but at least they should have looked for a youthful looking actress preferably in her late teens/early twenties. I said it for the last film and I say it again, they only picked up Ed's actor for his good looks because his acting skills are non-existent, even Al as a CGI walking armor acts better.

I have insomnia and melatonin never worked, but god damn that ending was dark dude. Either way, agreed. It's unfortunate we can't get a decent live action adaptation. Especially with really solid well written source material. It's crazy that you can be handed a well written story, told exactly why its good, then decide "nah, I can streamline that" as if to show the audience that you never understood the source material.
It baffles me the kind of unreasonable expectations people have from live actions of anime series. There's honestly a lot this movie did well (especially compared to its first part). Starting with giving Ed a good wig and doing a better job with the CGI. The reason they HAVE TO move a few events of the plot around is that if they tried to do it in the exact same order they'd need to do AT LEAST 5 movies of 2 hours each. Characters like Scar and father have significance throughout the series but dividing them between movies makes sense in their case cuz they simply can't introduce everyone and do justice to their arcs through 3 movies at the same time. It will only build layers of confusion with no satisfying cliffhangers at the end of each movie and no sense of recollection for viewers seeing how long it took them to release a second movie. A trilogy is always the safest option for such adaptations so they're only doing what they can with what they have. And some of the changes they made in this movie weren't even that bad. Ed crosses the desert by himself cuz while Maria Ross is introduced in the first part, it's an extra 45 mins that they'll have to do for a character that doesn't come back until the very end of the series. It would simply not be a wise decision on their end to actually have that arc only to rush that and everything else along with it due to lack of runtime. While there's not much to say about the first movie, the second and third were filmed during the difficult conditions of the pandemic and I personally felt they did a pretty okay job. They managed to cast some of the most well-known and highest-paid actors in Japan (Yamada Ryosuke as Ed, Dean Fujioka as Roy, Macken Yu as Scar, Yamada Yuki as Kimblee etc) while also steadily improving their directing choices because I don't think they made a lot of money from the first movie lol. All I'm saying is that this really isn't the worst we've seen. Live actions will never be as perfect as the source material and that's okay. This movie had its flaws here and there but it was still a massive improvement from the first part. Feel like people could enjoy and appreciate it more if they watched without hoping for it to exactly take after the original.

Mother’s basement PLEASE cover “The Skeleton Soldier that Failed to Protect the Dungeon”. As someone who has read both “Mushoku Tensei” and “To Your Eternity”, I struggle to say which of those three is best. I know it sounds like generic BS but oh my god it’s so good. EASILY better than “That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime”, but imo that bar isn’t a particularly high one, but I know you said it was pretty good so I’m just giving perspective. It’s ridiculously underrated and I don’t know how it’s slipped under your radar.
The best way to summarize both of these films is think about every problem with the live action avatar and then make it fullmetal alchemist. It’s a lot of the movie banking on us going “I remember that scene! I love this movie!” while not really ever understanding any of said scenes.
And it seems like both films suffer from badly compressing the source material to fit the runtime of a film, in contrast to the narrative breathing room offered in a serialized/episodic format.
The biggest mistake all these live actions keep making is choosing anime that are already top tier so the best they could possibly do is be as good as the anime. wouldn't it make more sense to go for a show that had problems and then you could avoid just being a worse version of the original.

Honestly I am confused about Scar being referred to as the "villain", talking about his "redemption" and such. Scar was a character which seemed lifted straight from a Romantic novel, a hero with a mission. Half my high school was fawning over similar characters and how heroic they were in their fight against the oppressors. Scar, at least in the Brotherhood, is a uniformly righteous character who happens to be put against the main protagonists (who are, after all, members of an extremely evil organisation which Scar wants to take down).
Seeing this, I just can't help but wonder why - with all these rantings about the bad Live Action Adaptations - did no one ever talk about the Bleach Live Action Movie which was actually pretty good!

One thing that's always bothered me about the live action FMA movies: The aesthetic of the FMA world has always had a distinctly Germanic feel to it; the architecture, the trains, the cars, the friggin' tanks when they appear at the end, they all look unmistakably German. Hell, they use snippets of the German language, the nation has a strong militaristic structure to it, and I'm not the only one to notice the whole Amerstrians being blonde and blue-eyed is pretty... Ayrian, right?
So then, with such strong and blatant German aesthetics and themes as a core part of the anime, why did WB Japan decide to film the live action films... in Italy?
Because Uwe Boll exploited Germany's film laws too much and they closed all the loopholes to make money off terrible movies.

As someone who lives in Japan, I remember how they marketed this here, and I can PROMISE you that nobody who doesn't already watch the anime is checking this out here. It was marketed as a sort of celebratory adaptation that isn't meant to stand on its own, it's just supposed to be a thing where fans go and see it just to see how (insert moment here) would look in live action. I do agree that that makes this entire film and any other fma live action films useless and unessacary, but it's not a super high concept project, and it isn't anything more than a reason to talk about FMA again during its release anniversary.
That makes this so much more clear. I am just appalled that this is how it's done.
That's kind of how I took it as well. I wasn't really expecting much more than a fun romp, and I wasn't really disappointed.
Well, I was definitely disappointed with Armstrong, and kind of with Kimblee as well, but it certainly was far from the worst thing I've seen.

I feel like the faithful to a fault design of Alphonse in this movie is pretty emblematic of the messed up priorities of these movies. They could have just redesigned him to look more like an actual suit of armour that someone might feasibly wear, and then just have him be portrayed by a big guy in a suit which would look a lot more convincing and cost a fraction as much. Instead he's got to look EXACTLY like he does in the anime even if it's totally impractical and doesn't translate well to live action at all.
so much this. i feel this is a big issue with alot of characterr designs across the board.they have to look exaclty like the anime , let alone that the art in the anime is just trying to depict real life in animation. so even basic stuff like spikes out fit in bebop or eds outfit here looks stylized and goofy . like spike is just aguy in a nice suit with dress shirt and tie suit have him wher that , not match the exact shade of every article to the point it looks like a costume not like a thing someone would really wear irl.
Yeah, you could very easily have an actual suit and use green screen editing to erase the parts of the actor so the suit still looks hollow. Tons of modern movies, even lower budget ones, mix practical and cg effects like this
The only reason I can think of is making Ed look short. Ed spends more time next to Al than anyone else and having Al be an actor (of average height) in a suit stand beside Ed (probably also average) would undermine Ed's shortness and Al hugeness - remember he's about as big as Armstrong in the show. Still that's not a very good reason, though.
A positive of Al's CG design is that those scenes where it's raining but all the other actors are bone dry, Al is the only one with realistic raindrops on him, ironically making him the realest looking one there at least in my eyes.

It's very "rearranging the cutlery on the Titanic" in terms of saving this film, but it was cool to hear Ling again.
Ling and the VA for him was the only kind of saving grace for this film. I mean the costume is a little bit too on the nose but yup that’s Ling. The Xing characters were the only people that made sense to have had East Asian actors.
Honestly, if Happy Science was really behind this whole production it would do a lot to explain the shoddy special effects and horrible writing.
If that's the case, I wouldn't be the least bit shocked if somehow Ryuho Okawa cameos as Truth.

It’s really weird to me that they had Scar be a Japanese actor.
Normally it wouldn’t be such a big deal - but in the original series the character of Scar is *explicitly* a commentary on race, colonialism, violence and the shared humanity among people. Having Scar be Japanese is like trying to do Apocalypse Now where all the American soldiers are played by Vietnamese actors.
It's not that weird at all. For years, Hollywood would just cast white people as any ethnicity and just makeup to make them brown or black or yellow or whatever. Japan is just doing the exact same thing here. It's literally blackface

The FMA author was an Ainu woman, which is an ethnic minority in Japan, historically treated like absolute shit. The treatment of the Ainu was actually her inspiration for the Ishbals.
Mackenyu looked fine as Scar but I reckon his real life father Sonny Chiba (rip) would be a much better choice to play Wrath/Bradley. Sonny Chiba did star in a movie based on a Hong Kong comic and he literally slayed that movie.

There is something magically awful that happens when a live actor tries to exactly match an animated scene. Seriously, we neither want nor need that.

Contrary to things like Dragon Ball or One Piece (we've yet to see what it'll look like, but I'm pessimistic) I think FMA could work in live action, but it should be rewritten a bit for the pacing to match a movie trilogy instead of trying to stay as close as the series as possible. And also... y'know, done with more care than what was put in this project.
Exactly. Some things should be left animated. Live action ≠ better, and frankly, I'd say live action is honestly worse 100% of the time. I prefer animated adaptations of live-action properties to the inverse.

A lot of these stories aren't inherently better because the medium is particularly suited to them but because they were written to suit the medium. Straight Disney adaptations don't work because a lot of the scenes were written specifically to work within or to show off the talent of the animators. Think the ballroom scene in Beauty and The Beast. That sweeping camera work isn't particularly interesting in live action but is an absolute flex on the part of the animators and looks amazing because it's absurdly difficult perspective work done to an intense level of competency.
I think Marvel Studios has kinda given execs brainrot because Marvel translates comic books really well into films. And it involves seasoned film directors and writers doing a spin on characters and writing stories that convey the essence of those characters meant for a 120 minute film.
A good FMA film wouldn't simply rehash the plot points of the anime and manga, it'd need to be a new story that conveys the themes and ideas. Not to say it can't borrow from the anime and manga, that's the whole point of adaptation, but like... You need to write a film screenplay for a film. Netflix FMA is only written in one sense of the word.
When Scar says "WHAT IS GOING OOOOOOOOOONNNN" I felt that.
Sometimes I wonder what it’s like in the timeline where instead of marvel comic book movies being the heavy hitters in the box office, it is anime adaptations.
People lining up for miles to see Hunter X Hunter: Chimera Ant Part 2. Countless RUclips videos fan casting their ideal Z Fighters. People getting sick of the genre after ten years and saying “it was simpler when it was just Astro Boy. When even IS a Bebop?!”
Yep. And after “Jump Force, the Return of Prometheus” people would be like “ughh, the shonen jump universe has already peaked, why are they releasing more movies?”
And they’ll be a relatively more niche but still large and passionate group of fans of DC and Marvel comic books just pleading for studios to stop making live action adaptations of them since they’re almost never any good.
Every once in a while there will be someone who concedes that “I guess the live action Spider-Man movie was *okay* but you’re still way better off just reading the comic or watching the cartoon”

I think the YYH Live Adaptation might actually kill me. FMA was close. It made me feel pain and tear up in a bad way and I’ve only seen this as my preview to those movies. If Armstrong is this bad, Lord knows how bad Toguro will look.

I love how they focused on getting the costume exactly like the manga because that is the important part not the story. Like if they just had Armstrong be bald it would have been better.
The thing is comics/animation often exaggerate features to make up for the lack of details the human eye uses for face recognition; so you make the glasses more pronounced, the hair more distinct, their build approaches extremes.
That's not required in live action so Armstrong should have been an actual 50-60 bodybuilder with the haircut of a 19th century Austrian

When you said "The Revenge of Scar" I kept waiting for a punchline regarding a Lion King sequel or something but then as the video kept going I was shocked to realize that was the actual subtitle of the film.
With a subtitle like "The Revenge of Scar" it made me think about the idea of a Lion King sequel where Scar (the lion one, not the FMA one) came back from beyond the grave to kill Simba of some other evil shit like that.
Still would have been a better idea to pursue than making this movie.
Scar (the lion one, not the FMA one) did come back in The Lion Guard cartoon as a spirit made out of fire to lead some hyenas (but not the same ones from the films) to help take out the lion guard (literal children), and take over again or something. It was... not as metal as it sounded but it sure did happen.

The first third doesn't really have a plot, they just help a bunch of animals. Then the 2nd third is about Volcano Ghost Scar. But then he's defeated and the last third is about the journey to the tree of life or something.
That just kinda spits in the face of the three act structure, doesn't it? I mean, imagine if Avatar had no mention of Ozai or the Fire Nation in S1, it was just Aang helping random people. Then the 2nd season introduces Ozai and he's defeated in the S2 finale. And the 3rd season is about saving the last Lion Turtle or something.
Damn, it's almost like this show's aesthetic was defined by the fact that it was an animation, and bringing it to live action was not only unnecessary, but a terrible stylistic choice, and some character designs just don't work in real life
An adaptation of FMA that fixes the issues of the original and merges the best of both versions would be cool honestly
Cosplayers make more anime accurate costumes than these. What was their budget on the movie? This is the stuff fans of FMA need to really worry about, not SpyXFamily ranking higher.
Indeed, I can swear the crew just bought the costumes in store, and the cheapest they could get that resembled the true thing.
They go through all this effort to make all the costumes look accurate to the manga yet Mei looks like she's 30 and Scar looks no older than Ed
Honestly, the best thing I can say about the live-action FMAB movies is that they are perfect ways to make you want to rewatch the anime.
I get that they want to make the characters resemble their original manga counterparts, but the character designs just do not work in live action when translated so literally. They really needed to tweak something on the more exaggerated features to avoid them looking too goofy. Armstrong is a prime example - his design is intentionally a little silly looking but it works well enough as a drawing in a comic book and as an animated cartoon, but looks painfully out of place in live action. Especially when nobody else looked like they belonged in the same movie with him.
THIS. It’s like trying to make All Might from my hero academia into a one to one example - even though his design is an intentional callback to 90’s style of American superhero comics.
This is what Marvel understands that nobody else seems to; you don't need to look the same, it needs to *feel* the same, and animation/comics/live action have very different "feels"
They could've just thrown a bald bodybuilder or Dwayne Johnson into an Amestrian military uniform, and I would've accepted that as Armstrong, yet they somehow managed something worse than the laziest possible option.

something that really makes this movie awkward to watch is, and I'm not knowledgeable about movies enough to know how to call it, the "this is just somewhere in Italy" effect. I don't know what exactly they forgot to add or remove from the scenarios in post production, or during filming, but the characters and everything they interact with or that is part of the fantasy setting feels like it is completely out of place and just places in front of, like, a random hotel in Umbria.

Honestly this feels is one of the few movies where it would likely been better off with a western studio at least with the casting. Also they did Armstrong dirty just from what I'm seeing.

This reminds me of the issues with the live action avatar movie. both of the source materials deal with imperialism, genocide, the value of human life even lives of your enemies and colonialism while at the same time making jokes and light hearted fun. I haven't seen live action writing yet that can marry those themes effectively.
Deathnote and Cowboy Bebop are the easiest anime IPs to adapt, and Netflix still managed to muck it up. They should really give up on adapting anime to live action.
Bebop is not easy. Something so great cannot be so easily replicated.

At least with Death Note they tried to mix up things by exchanging the personalities of Light and Misa between them. The problem was that the MC was still Light, and with Misa's lack of self respect and agency, he was expected to carry the movie.
Clearly, the people responsible for adapting Neil Gaiman's "The Sandman" should have taken over for this second installment.
Easy to go 'LOL Netflix', but... C'mon folks. This is WB Japan and WB Japan only, the sequels were planned and in production well before Netflix bought the rights to distribute even the first film on their platform. 'Netflix Original' is the same thing as 'Crunchyroll Originals'--its more a thing for them to slap on any random old thing, than it is an actual mark of the platform's involvement.
Meanwhile, I'm curious how they're going to shoehorn Greed, Ling meeting Greed, Ling becoming Greed, Greedling becoming friends with everyone, and the whole Greedling-Father end of the finale here. There is... a WHOOOLE lotta junk there that's going to need smushing, and I cannot estimate the amount of flaming bags of fecal matter that's going to get stepped on with it. I haven't watched this one. The first one and the wobbly foam teeth on Gluttony as he waddled after a soldier was enough for me--the Flame spritz Alchemist Roy Mustang was just a... disappointing plastic cherry on that cake. So much of everything just lacks impact, even Armstrong in those few shots I've seen. And Armstrong is literally nothing but impact. That entire final battle against Father? Literally all impactful killer, no filler.
And I doubt WB Japan gave their VFX crew the budget to even approach doing the Wrath vs. Scar fight--as well as the wild brawl with the Military--semi decently... Much less the massive finale. I cannot wait for Father to hold up a static JPG of the sun for that part.
It's clear people are just biased because "Netflix" thus everything is bad. Not even taking into account the budget and production are different for WB and Japan focused productions. If y'all gonna hate then hate accurately 🤣 this type of adaptation production is prevalent in Japan.
Warner Bros is struggling financially & it doesn't help that people trash on their movies like this. I happened to really like this movie for what it was & can't wait for the 3rd Movie. For some reason I get the feeling there could be more than 3 films because of how early in the series the 2nd Movie ended. 1 of the things the movie does better than Brotherhood & the manga is the adaptation of Fuhrer King Bradley as all of his friendly roles were replaced by General Hakuro & you can tell he's always angry here even when having his calm conversations about Selim.

5. at some point. jumping from a building and you see the major's active camo let her blend into the cityscape below.
6. the major rips something off its hinges to the point that it rips off her arm.
If you manage to reference all these. You just demonstrated to me you know the ghost in the shell anime very well. I'd put my trust in you to not fk this up.
As for the other live action movie I wanted done right? Death note. It can be done at a minimal budget. No CGI ryuk. Just Light Yagami, talking to a seemingly disembodied voice. But occasionally you see a strange shadow in the silouette of ryuk when Light gets cornered or finds out he's very nearly exposed. e.g. wen ray penber is spotted tailing him, L meets Light, etc.
If I were to do it. I would use ryuk's voices as like a voice that speak out loud his doubts, his mistakes and his seemingly immense paranoia. The fans know its not just a crazy voice from his mind. But for the movie, its shot to imply to be that way. Its a different take, but builds on the idea than simply adapt it like these crappy movies have.
@@ceresbane I’d say just don’t do another live action Death Note if that’s what they want to do for Ryuk and the other Shinigami. The manga starts and ends with Ryuk, and the Shinigami all kind of play important rolls in the story later on. Making him a voice inside of Lights head with the occasional spoooky shadowy figure just sounds lazy.
In all honesty, I always thought Death Note would be one of the easiest live action adaptions. The character designs are simple and believable, the “action” sequences are common in most movies and you could probably find locations to film at or build some basic set pieces when needed. All you would really need to focus the budget on are a few good actors for the important roles and a decent costume designer. The major chunk of the budget should go to the CGI for the Shinigami.
4:22 The Brotherhood anime used Barry the Chopper, the Slicer Brothers, and the Fifth Laboratory break in all together to lay the initial threads with Envy as well as raising Al's existential crisis (setting up for Ed's guilt reveal later on), whereas the "movie" just throws Ed off a train.
And they already did the Al existential crisis m/Ed confrontation in the first movie

that's actually a pretty good point. that's a failry common practice in Japan already and I would have to say that, yes, anime tend to have "stage play energy" so it would actually work out quite well, I think.
Plus, it's WAY cheaper than an actual movie or series.

My grandpa threw this movie on as background noise while I was visiting. It was only bearable because for some reason the dialogue was delayed by like 7 seconds.
I never thought Geoff would make a sequel to his “live-action FMA dumpster fire video” from way back in 2018, but holy shit am I ready for it.
Am I the only one who thinks that properties like Attack on Titan and Full Metal Alchemist would do best as live action if they let Hollywood do it? Like first off, the anime cast are already mostly western looking people, plus visual effects heavy shows like this could benefit from a bigger budget.
Would I prefer they never do live action adaptations of these works instead? Oh definitely. But if they keep insisting to do them, at least make them look good.
Yeah... I didn't agree with Geoff on a lot of the good stuff he had to say when it came to the Cowboy Bebop adaptation, but he was 100% right about the casting. Just wouldn't be the same with a Japanese dude playing Jet. Of course, I also agree with him about the casting of Vicious, which was... really bad. So letting Hollywood handle things isn't exactly a guaranteed recipe for success either. *shrug*

Just like the live action Attack on Titan abomination (I _will not_ call that a "movie"- you can't make me). Like... there's a whole storyline about how Mikasa is the only japanese person still alive in the Walls. The (admittedly false) idea that every race has been completely wiped off the face of the earth and forgotten about to the point where people don't even realize someone can be born with dark skin was part of the horror that made the series so good... but yeah, cast "EREN JÄGER" as a japanese guy- that makes sense.
(I mean, I probably shouldn't use that as an example, since the only thing that tied the abomination to the anime/manga of the same name was the idea of Titans, and I think 3 characters who share names of characters from the OG series).
The sad thing is the western setting could’ve aided in appealing to mainstream audiences if Hollywood had deceided to throw money behind a big budget live action adaptation. Before the first “Netflix” live action fma came out I’d said for years fma would probably fare well in this scenario due to its western setting. Furthermore it would not get backlash for whitewashing like ghost in the shell did. Now this adaptation would probably scare any would be investors away for good
The worst thing is that had this series pulled a Rebuild of Eva and told a similar but very much made for movies story, it might have been a really good place for cautious newcomers to experience FMA in a format they don't have to invest as much time into. But that'd require competence.
I'm glad you took a note from Explanation point in this video, using clips with the video and audio from the dub, but overlaid the subtitles from the original audio version is really nice to have both dub and sub crowds see how dialogue is conveyed.
I see a lotta people in the comments saying "why couldn't they cast non-Japanese actors?" and as a Japanese person I have to say that's impossible if a movie is made in Japan.
Japan is different from America, and it's not diverse because 95% (or something like that) of the people there are Japanese. There are like, 2 famous white people and it's impossible to have a "racially diverse" cast in a Japanese movie. I feel like this whole critique is so American -- not that that's a bad thing -- and kind of pushes American views on Japan.
Idk, it just didn't sit right with me but it would all be fixed if this film was made in Hollywood or something with a waaay larger budget.
But also this film did have a good budget, or I'm guessing so cause I recognize a bunch of the actors (like Edward is played by one of the most famous idols in japan). Japan just sucks at making live action things imo lmao.
So......don't adapt the anime where race is a very important to the story. It's so fucking simple. Being made in Japan doesn't excuse it, it just makes it look more pathetic that they thought it was a good idea despite the fact that they couldn't even do the bare minimum

Also if you live in Japan and consume a lot of Japanese media it's kind of common for Japanese actors to portray foreign characters so just wanted to point out that it's just what people do, and no one was actively trying to undermine the themes. it was just an obvious course of action.

@@kenshix7902 Idk my guy I can't speak for all Japanese people cause I'm just one person, but my best attempt at a guess is that 1. people don't consume American media as much because most people aren't fluent in English 2. Even if it's noticed, people don't consider it that big of an issue because they live in Japan and don't face daily discrimination or anything (sort of like how people just mock Engrish in Anime but don't consider it a serious issue).
I do think there are some Japanese people speaking out? Idk? But it is a whole other country's media and most people can't be bothered. People from other countries don't care about America as much as Americans think.

I have only seen the title at this point and I genuinely can't believe the sequel is even worse than the first movie. This is gonna be such a good video.
Scar's story and the Ishval war of extermination are the best arcs I've ever seen in manga or anime. As someone who lives in a country that went through a military dictatorship in it's recent history, those stories connected with me deeply, in a way no other manga can hope to achieve, since it's very personal. To see it dissected to a poorly done highlight reel of just another popular product under WB's umbrella pisses me off tremendously.

I think live action only works for more realistic manga/anime. That's why Rurouni Kenshin works well in live action format and the likes of FMA and Dragon Ball flounder.

Those are my takeaways after watching this video:
Winry's actress has been giving her all throughout the movie series, but the problem is that she's far less charismatic than her manga/anime counterpart.
Ling's actor is more charismatic than Ed's, not a feat in itself but it's fitting considering that in the anime Ling is more charismatic than Ed, not a small feat at all there.
I don't mind if May's actress isn't a child, but at least they should have looked for a youthful looking actress preferably in her late teens/early twenties.
I said it for the last film and I say it again, they only picked up Ed's actor for his good looks because his acting skills are non-existent, even Al as a CGI walking armor acts better.
Hollywood made adaptations with white actors playing Asian characters while Japan made adaptations with Japanese actors playing white characters...

Looking at the clips, I 100% like how amazing everyone looks. From the costumes to how close the actors resamble the characters, might be the one good things about this
I have insomnia and melatonin never worked, but god damn that ending was dark dude. Either way, agreed. It's unfortunate we can't get a decent live action adaptation. Especially with really solid well written source material. It's crazy that you can be handed a well written story, told exactly why its good, then decide "nah, I can streamline that" as if to show the audience that you never understood the source material.
It baffles me the kind of unreasonable expectations people have from live actions of anime series. There's honestly a lot this movie did well (especially compared to its first part). Starting with giving Ed a good wig and doing a better job with the CGI. The reason they HAVE TO move a few events of the plot around is that if they tried to do it in the exact same order they'd need to do AT LEAST 5 movies of 2 hours each. Characters like Scar and father have significance throughout the series but dividing them between movies makes sense in their case cuz they simply can't introduce everyone and do justice to their arcs through 3 movies at the same time. It will only build layers of confusion with no satisfying cliffhangers at the end of each movie and no sense of recollection for viewers seeing how long it took them to release a second movie. A trilogy is always the safest option for such adaptations so they're only doing what they can with what they have.
And some of the changes they made in this movie weren't even that bad. Ed crosses the desert by himself cuz while Maria Ross is introduced in the first part, it's an extra 45 mins that they'll have to do for a character that doesn't come back until the very end of the series. It would simply not be a wise decision on their end to actually have that arc only to rush that and everything else along with it due to lack of runtime. While there's not much to say about the first movie, the second and third were filmed during the difficult conditions of the pandemic and I personally felt they did a pretty okay job. They managed to cast some of the most well-known and highest-paid actors in Japan (Yamada Ryosuke as Ed, Dean Fujioka as Roy, Macken Yu as Scar, Yamada Yuki as Kimblee etc) while also steadily improving their directing choices because I don't think they made a lot of money from the first movie lol.
All I'm saying is that this really isn't the worst we've seen. Live actions will never be as perfect as the source material and that's okay. This movie had its flaws here and there but it was still a massive improvement from the first part. FMA is too dear to my heart for me to desecrate it by watching this, I'd rather commit human transmutation and then turn that thing into chimera, which might actually be an analogy for this.

Did you intentionally pick up the No Notes thing from Brockway on 1-800 Hotdog? Because you really nailed the delvilery on that joke and I appreciated the shoutout, loved the episode you were on.
Mother’s basement PLEASE cover “The Skeleton Soldier that Failed to Protect the Dungeon”. As someone who has read both “Mushoku Tensei” and “To Your Eternity”, I struggle to say which of those three is best. I know it sounds like generic BS but oh my god it’s so good. EASILY better than “That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime”, but imo that bar isn’t a particularly high one, but I know you said it was pretty good so I’m just giving perspective. It’s ridiculously underrated and I don’t know how it’s slipped under your radar.
The best way to summarize both of these films is think about every problem with the live action avatar and then make it fullmetal alchemist. It’s a lot of the movie banking on us going “I remember that scene! I love this movie!” while not really ever understanding any of said scenes.
And it seems like both films suffer from badly compressing the source material to fit the runtime of a film, in contrast to the narrative breathing room offered in a serialized/episodic format.

The biggest mistake all these live actions keep making is choosing anime that are already top tier so the best they could possibly do is be as good as the anime. wouldn't it make more sense to go for a show that had problems and then you could avoid just being a worse version of the original.

Honestly I am confused about Scar being referred to as the "villain", talking about his "redemption" and such. Scar was a character which seemed lifted straight from a Romantic novel, a hero with a mission. Half my high school was fawning over similar characters and how heroic they were in their fight against the oppressors. Scar, at least in the Brotherhood, is a uniformly righteous character who happens to be put against the main protagonists (who are, after all, members of an extremely evil organisation which Scar wants to take down).
Seeing this, I just can't help but wonder why - with all these rantings about the bad Live Action Adaptations - did no one ever talk about the Bleach Live Action Movie which was actually pretty good!
