This tutorial will teach you how to get the best graphics possible in the game Medieval II: Total War.
Game: Medieval II: Total War (Kingdoms)
Developer: The Creative Assembly (www.creative-as...)
Publisher: Sega (www.sega.com)
Featured Modifications: 1648, Europa Barbarorum II, Stainless Steel
Gameplay Resolution: 1920 x 1080
Graphics Mod: ReShade (version 1.1.0)
Total War and Medieval II: Total War are © Sega (www.sega.com).
UPDATE: Link to ReShade presets (after Google Drive security update): drive.google.com/file/d/0B87_DOntiuKaMmtpOWZFcGhiTzg/view?usp=sharing&resourcekey=0-7IEAAbF36xAUaghbZqT7vg
Just unzip the contents into your ReShade directory, pick a preset you like, and have fun! Cheers!
I don't see ReShade folder in my game folder (M2TW). Installation is not difficult but somehow I can't choose your settings from ingame reshade ui. I can do effects tweaks, choose effects path etc. in game but I don't know what's going on. :)
Yea me too, reshade must've removed and updated for the worse.@filhellen
Spent hours playing Rome total war and medieval total war 2 as a kid. Can't believe these are classic games now. I remember being blown away by these graphics
Tbh i still am. İt feels like a really well made indie game in current yeat
Would love a remastered version of this game with a sleek UI that doesn't cover a large part of the screen.
There is the option "minimal hud" in the options menu, tick it and you get what you want^^
Third Age + Graphics + Third person General = Traped inside this game
Which preset do.you use
amm why I played this game 10 years and I did not know how to do that ? This brings new life to the game dude, so amazing ! Keep up the good work !
Glad you enjoy it, it makes a huge difference for me too, lots of fun to adjust the visual effects
Think Medieval 2 Total war is the best. It feels just more chaotic
I agree. I actually prefer more unwieldy / slow-responding units in the battle. Otherwise it feels too much like an arcade game to just point, click, and everything happens immediately (doesn't feel right).
@@HaHawk Finally someone says it!
@@HaHawk absolutely! I just started playing this game & got a few mods & I'm shocked it's as fun or more fun than Attila & the GOT+LOTR mods available for that game!
NPC # 7223 V2.2 same here third age reforged and warhammer mods equals weeks of endless fun, the battle editor only makes it infinitely better. If I can get this graphic thing to work I’ll have so much fun with cinematic battles too
Due to popular request, I've made my ReShade presets for Medieval II available for download here:
drive.google.com/open?id=0B87_DOntiuKaMmtpOWZFcGhiTzg
Just unzip the contents into your ReShade directory, pick a preset you like, and have fun! cheers
Hey Ha Hawk, every time I try to open Europa Barbarorum II with the Reshade configuration set up, the game begins loading then says there is a critical graphics error and I need to lower the settings, I've switched AA off in the preferences file, and on the nvidia control panel. Basically, before I even start to apply post-processing effects it crashes. Any ideas?
Does this only happen with EBII? Can you still run vanilla M2TW?
Thanks m8 now my friends will think I have atilla
Could you please give me the Presets for the very beginning intro with the Scottish flag and cannons going off plz
It's Johnny that's why you have to turn minimum hud on and clip hide for everything, a hole lot less blurry.
Nice video Ha Hawk. Thank you for taking the time to make it.
D Bone Thanks man, I appreciate the kind words!
Looking at these cinematic camera shots, I admire how well the game's animations and models hold up. They're obviously low-poly by today's standards, but the detail is still impressive. Just look how well the rides bobs at 17:11
Anyways, thank you for the guide.
my thoughts exactly! it was clearly a work of love by Creative Assembly
Europa Barbarorum with this.
Just a note: If you use radar = hide and disable_arrow_markers = 1 you wont be able to use a lot of the UI functionality. The former disables pinging the map to highlight enemy/friendly forces and latter gets rid of the small arrow markers around units feet to show you have them selected.
Very informative, nicely done, many thanks!
Means a lot coming from you 👍
Even the original graphics reek of atmosphere and great memories!
Still a great vid HaHawk . I try and share it around whenever I can .
Thanks bro! Glad you enjoy it
Amazing Graphics, Epic Battles! What more can we ask for, A really huge and sincere thank you! My Holy Roman Empire Campaign is perfect👌🏻 and running really good with my new GTX 1660 graphics card. 😁👍
Works for Rome 1 as well if you set DX level to 8 :)
Good to know man, thanks
When a 2006 game actually looks better than 2013's Rome II (you know, the one with the abysmal quality AA, mediocre textures and terrible battle map graphics)...
lol I know, right? The newer games have better 3D models (higher polycount) and better utilization of new hardware (better performance); but in terms of the overall appearance, I still think M2 holds its own very well.
@Fil lmfao ikr? ppl just mad that rome 2 isnt AS GOOD as what it could have been...also remember it came out a while ago..it just seems new cuz theres still 10k+ players consistently otherwise i want to play Medeival 2 BAD but the graphgics turn me off ( im spoiled now, back in the day Rome 1 was amazing to me xD ) so here I am looking at mods tryna convince myself it can look good enough for my spoiled ass to play
Don't kid yourselves, mod Rome II to make it a fair comparison and it looks way better than this, never mind any later TW games, are you gonna tell me this beats Warhammer II or Three Kingdoms next? Even Britannia looks better XD
The magic in older total wars (until med2 to be mor exact) the models have weight, there is colision, the engine is simulating the men, their armours, weapons, the precision (or the lack of it) of the projectiles... The newer games are just numbers going behind the screen, who have the better units will win the engage, there are no nuances, its straight, batallions have health bars..............
I couldn't get them running together on the same screen but I suspect that's due to using Windows 8 (compatibility mode helped there to get it running), I could still swap between them though so the changes to settings were *almost* instant.. The presets were a great help as well, thanks for this!
Wait you cheeky player, how did you pop up the mini map at 15:56 I thought modifying the medieval2preferences.cfg made the ui completely hide. Am I missing something ?
When you're playing with minimal HUD, F5 will toggle (show/hide) the minimap in game
damn dude, I have to beg my head for you.
Props to you, mate
I can't believe I didn't discover this any earlier, but I'm so glad that I did! I only regret that I didn't have this in my previous video's, yet will make sure to apply them on all my future ones. :) Right now I'm uploading 3 series in Third Age Total War Divide and Conquer. But it seems as if you have quite the number of mods installed yourself! Could you detail the mods that you play yourself?
Europa Barbarorum 2, Stainless Steel, and 1648 are some of my favorites. There are many other mods that I still haven't tried yet, like Broken Crescent. The people who mod M2 have tons of talent... I have also used some submods for Stainless Steel as you can see in another video I uploaded a long time ago here ruclips.net/video/TV1PvFs21ek/видео.html
Haven't seen the vid yet. Reading the comments to figure out if this is good or not. So since I am convinced for the credibility of the vid and before I start look the vid may I ask if this is applicable throughout the installed mods? I have kingdoms, euroba Barbarorum, deus lo vult, westeros and falcom.
Yeah this only affects graphics and is compatible with any gameplay mod 👍
@@HaHawk thanks. As I am at work now and can't test it or experiment, can you tell me if this is easy to install and process.
And plus one, since I play all my total war games in a 4gb ram... Is using this programs consuming ram etc???
In any case it looks very good job and thank you anyway
If you don't want to go through and pause for each setting in Nvidia control panel, here is an exported profile of the shown Nvidia settings for medieval2.exe made using Nvidia Profile Inspector:
mega. nz /#!XrhjnKpJ!TvJL0dB-cqkZ5jk56HlCMdCXSwQNN_IRa1SeEUSwZZ0
Link to Nvidia Profile Inspector:
www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Info/NVIDIA-Inspector.shtml
Simply extract the program to the folder of your choice, open the program (NVidiaProfileInspectorDmW.exe), and then click the import profile button (green arrow pointing downwards+disk icon) and find the .nip file downloaded above, and then click on the Apply Changes button.
You can double-check the settings by typing in "Medieval II: Total War" in the search bar in the top left. Note that I have not included the G-sync setting as I do not have a G-sync compatible monitor, so you'll need to make that change yourself if you do.
This is especially useful if your Windows is not in English, since you cannot easily (without Regedit) change the Nvidia Control Panel language and it becomes confusing to do "double"-translations and the items are sometimes listed in a different order.
very impressive video - like the wardruna songs in the background btw (something very non graphical...)
a fellow wardruna fan
do you know what music started playing around 5:00? its dope
that feeling when you feel like he changed his background for the video
nah, still rocking that background to this day :)
Awesome video! Lots of useful information! Love it
Thanks man, glad to hear it!
I reported this issue before. I commented that I found a solution. But it keeps coming back.
How can you get the Mediator app to apply changes right after you click apply? When I open the app and Medieval 2 and click "Apply", nothing happens. I have to click "Permanent Push To Application" in order for the changes to be applied. Most of the time, the changes do not apply and the app fails. Medieval 2 then falls back to default settings because the app apparently encounters an error and crashes (though the Windows software is still technically open).
To re-apply my changes, I have to apply some crazy setting like "Nostalgia - SweetFX". Then once the crazy setting is applied, I have to undo it in order to get the modded settings back.
Any solution?
Also, I have noticed that when you zoom out of Medieval 2, shadows get blurred out and finer grass details get lost. Any way to preserve them?
This is amazing, can't wait to try this today. Thanks for the hard work. I have 1 question - when we want to use a mod with these graphics do we still edit the main medieval2.preference.cfg file in the med 2 directory or do we alternatively / additionally have to edit a file in the specific mod folder?
True Crime Legends Just the CFG in the main M2TW directory 👌
Ha Hawk thanks very much m8
Holy fuck! I was wondering when this would finally be uploaded.
Damn you're quick! It's probably not even available in 1080p yet >.< Hope you enjoy!
It looks a lot better than the Warscape engine whit its "black dots" or ant soldier....
HaHawk, I know you probably won't respond. But in the newer releases of reshade, I can't seem to find Mediator, am I doing something wrong or is it not there?
Hey man, yeah, the newer versions of ReShade do not have mediator. If you want to follow the guide in this video and use the presets, download the older version (shown in the video, link in description). Cheers
@@HaHawk Yeah I downloaded the version shown in the video and there is no mediator?
Hey, do you use any camera mod for the "free roam" and zooming in real close to the units? Or is that a standard feature that i'm not aware of, and, if so, how do i use it?
The presets are amazing and the potencial for tweaking the game even further is amazing.
Thanks.
Hey, no special mod. But it's the Total War camera option, not the RTS camera. It takes some getting used to. Hold the middle mouse button to zoom in on a unit, and R/F (I think, it's been a while) to adjust the camera tilt. You can also get the vertical (top down) angle by playing with the mouse and keyboard shortcuts. Have fun!
Hi, this looks great.
Unfortunately, this doenst work for me.
I install mediator and in game in the top left corner the message appears, but it doesnt change anything.
Every change i make and click apply just doesnt change anything.
I also downloaded yours presets and can see them in mediator, but again, nothing changes.
Any help? or pointer to waht i might have missed?
Thanks
Did you get it sorted yet? Maybe you have anti-aliasing enabled? That will prevent the game from using a shader. Good luck
@@HaHawk Thanks for the quick reply.
No, i haven't.
Anti-aliasing is disabled.
If i select the DIRECTD 10/11 option it applies some random wierd effect but again, i cant change anything.
[SOLVED] Lol i really dont know what i did aside from reinitializing the game several times, but its working now.
Thanks for the tutorial ;)
hi so i got everything working but the screen is a samll window in the top right corner whenever i launch it how do i fix that ?
so i removed the config file but i followd your steps so i dont know where it went wrong
defiantly worth a subscribe, cheers!
PaPa SAVAGE Thanks for the motivation 💪
Ha Hawk thanks for detailed instructions and community support me and friends appreciate it. Keep it up ✌🏻
Thanks for the great video you made. I am also Always looking for graphical improvements. I have a few questions: did you use Mediëval TW 2 with any mods, i may have missed mods in your describtion? And can these mentioned improvements also work on 2560x1440 resolution? and on 4K resolution (3840x2160)?
files in drive are completely different to those in video
Something like this never works for me have steam version but got AMD graphic card so i tried to follow every step but in the end doesnt work
You just got yourself a subscriber :-)
Kv Chikka Glad you enjoy the vids!
Does it work for Empire as well? My problem with newest versions of Reshade is that they don't often work properly on older TW games (only half of effects are working, and only game where I was able to run it properly like on newer games was Shogun 2 with Reshade version 4.5.1).
It does, yes. I would almost say Empire is easier to play with since you only really need to add some contrast and maybe a couple other effects. The base game already has DOF.
i like how 4k in M2TW is hands down better thancompared to Attilla or TOB. I suffer woth 4k monitor played those games. UI, and camera is very negatively affected by 2560x1400 or 4k res.
Agree! this test video is in 1440p, worked out very well ruclips.net/video/AUSCtp0WNaI/видео.html
My game is running but I've info about error x3067 and reshade is not working. Any idea what's the problem? I've tried to do everything like You showed in this video.
Hey ! Thanks for this video and these tips & tricks. Medieval 2 with ReShade looks actually better than newer TW in my opinion
I only got one question : how can I disable arrow trails ? I find them very annoying and unrealistic
Search TWC forums -- I'm 99% sure there's a mod for that (and for cannon balls too)
Yeah I already spent hours browsing TWC but all I find are mods working for Shogun 2, Rome 2 or Attila :(
Anyway, I will look once again and try manipulating the game files
Thanks ;)
Can you please tell wich mods an effects you used in the first clip of the video? The smoke is not the default ingame.
Initial shot is from a mod called 1648. It's a little rough around the edges but soooo much fun!
Amazing stuff, highly recommended!
Thank you brother! Glad you enjoy it^^
Where can i turn on the selected troop "dots" on again? i love the cinematic visuals, but i stil want to be able to play relaxed
In medieval2preferences.cfg, change this value as follows:
disable_arrow_markers = 0
OMG finally savior has raise to the community.
By the way does it work for Medieval 2 total war kindoms? ASAP
Yep, works for any version and any mod of Medieval 2! 👌
i have givin it a try but only sliders that work for me are the levels sw fx. using ss6.4. why is that so?? first time user
@@justkris6461
That sounds wierd. I have no idea what the issue is, but I got it working for Stainless.
Ok I want to try this because I get severe migraines from the normal graphics(I don't know why) but I think this could help but whats the impact on loading times?
Hello thank you for your tutorial I have a little problem I do not narive to take or c.c the file of notepad.
Yet I did check the box but it still comes back to the old version with the flags exct ...?
Could you help me thank you.
hey is there a reason why the main menu animation doesn't work once I use reshade? im just curious
That's a config option (preferences CFG). You can re-enable it by changing the setting from 0 to 1
@@HaHawk ohhh thanks
So the current version of reshade today is 4.4.2. And it's only an .exe , no other files come with the download. Do i need to use the old one like shown in the video?
You're welcome to use a newer version of ReShade, but the tutorial and presets I created only work with the older version linked in the video. Cheers
@@HaHawk Well, the effects compiling at the startup shows up. But when i try to change things with the program in-game, nothing happens when i hit apply. Maybe it'S because i play with SS mod and SSHIP mod. So not sure if i should use medieval2.exe or kingdoms or SS launcher.exe.
My most sincere thanks!
Really good stuff.
I already have a d3d9 file and when i switch them out it doesnt compile...It says it compiles when I have the original d3d9 in there...but if I try to add Reshade64 it does nothing under that name....
Thank you so much for the video, i really enjoy playing tw with reshade.
1 question: is it possible to have a minimal HUD and still be able to flash your own + enemy units units on the battle map? its only possible on the battle HUD, but turning on battle HUD kinda screws with the DEPTHOFFIELD: The units in front of you will get blurry, and the units further away are sharper.
Let me know if its possible, Thanks in advance
Yeah, as far as I know there is not a hotkey to flash units, so if you really need this feature you'd have to use the traditional battle HUD. As for the DOF, you could (1) try playing with the "Total War camera" which allows you to use 'R' and 'F' to tilt the camera up and down. That could refocus the DOF; and (2), alternatively, you could specify a different DOF_FOCUSPOINTY (fourth parameter in the DOF options), like 0.6 or 0.7 and see if that keeps the focus where you want it.
Thanks for the quick reply
I got it to work with TW camera and Tiltshift, which also gives a nice blur.
Nice, yeah, tiltshift usually gives a higher FPS too 👌🏻
So, what graphics card do you need, I’m not very up to date on that
Any entry-level graphics card will do, since this is an old game. Actually CPU is most important.
This looks really good and even though I'm illiterate, its intuitive. Any tips on what will make it perform a little better if it's chugging? I run these old Total War games on a laptop (I know...) because it's convenient and they're great for it, but I find with Europa Barbarorum 2 and other things I get a pretty choppy framerate unlike you which runs silky smooth. Do you think it's the hardware or are there settings I can lose? I don't think it's ReShade itself, although some presets make it run like a slideshow.
Biggest bottleneck will be CPU, which is what a laptop lacks most compared to a desktop computer.
Start by reducing your 3D rendering settings. You can do this in-game (reduce unit detail, and try terrain as well). You can also reduce unit size to something like Normal or Small to have fewer men on the battlefield which will improve FPS... cheers
@@HaHawk much love ✌ I appreciate the help. hope you come back for more EB2 playthroughs since they just dropped an update, your Aedui campaign is sick.
Is there a way to hide the radar when looking at a replay? Whenever I put it to hide it only hides it during a live game and not during a replay
Not by default I'm afraid, no. It would be possible by editing some files however.
Ha Hawk ahh ok well thanks anyway!
when i open the file in notepad and make the item changes to the list , i dont see the items to change under video. i dont see "windowed" or "borderless window". Should i add them to the list? Thx
Yes you can add them yourself, or you can check the description and copy and paste the text from there. Cheers!
When I open the menu from the battle or campaign, the buttons are blank. What setting did that?
By blank do you mean blurry? Might be DOF. You can enable/disable the effect whenever you want in real-time
No matter what I do, it either does nothing or it gets incredibly blurry when I do my own. I tried your presets, but all of them were really gritty and not to my liking. When I try to customize yours, It gets blurry again. Any ideas?
Sounds like an issue with DOF (which you can just turn off / disable). How blurry is it? Or are you referring to anti-aliasing?
I think it was the computer I was using. Do you know if 32-bit vs 64-bit has an effect on ReShade? Anyways, it works on this computer. With the other one it was blurry to the point where it's only blotches of color. Thanks!
Doesn't work. Whenever I use the mediator it just tells me that various paths are restricted and then closes.
Jordan R Sounds like some sort of hardware incompatibility. Maybe you could try the newer version (reshade.me) and see if it works.
This is amazing!! thanks dude! One question how do I have to change in order to highlight my units and my enemy units? sometimes it is difficult for me to distinguish between my units from my enemy´s units.
Edit your config: "full_battle_HUD = 1"
Ha Hawk thanks a lot! BTW i am playing a mod called (seven kingdoms) its a game of thrones mod and it looks amazing 😀
Under presets the folder is empty, looks nothing like in the video. Guessing thats why it crashes on start up. Any help?
What's crashing, the game, or ReShade? Shouldn't ever crash no matter what. Also, there are no default presets. If you want to use the ones shown in the video you can download them separately (link in pinned comment)... Good luck
@@HaHawk Ahh ok got ya thanks, i thought i was missing files.
@ha hawk,i use a ryzen 5 computer, so i use the radeon graphics thing, right?
Hey! Yeah you can use whichever GPU settings app is on your computer (Radeon in your case)
Wow I can't wait to try this out with Roma surrectum 3
Imperator Gr Take some screenshots when you do, I'd like to see what it looks like. Also if you like mods (and good graphics) check out this clip from "1648" (it's raw footage, unlisted video): ruclips.net/video/AUSCtp0WNaI/видео.html
Ha Hawk I couldn't get it to work :(
You got a sub!Very good and educational tutorial.
Thanks man, good to hear you learned something :)
Whoa I'm late to the party but this looks sick! Would it work with Third Age?
Hell yeah it does and it looks awesome, better than vanilla! Just be sure to lower unit level detail if you want higher fps 👍
@@HaHawk I have an R9 390. Running at 3440x1440 (21:9). Tis amazing on Vanilla. This is the first actual mod I will be trying. I've only played a few Third Age games online with a mate. Yes, I lost all those games lol. I was a newbie.
I've only really been playing Vanilla solo against AI. But looking forward to trying this mod to make the battles more interesting. Might try Stainless Steel after. And then move onto Third Age. Nice to know this works with Third Age!
And thanks for the quick reply! 1 year later and you're still monitoring this account! Nice!
Mediafire would not connect using Chrome. Strange. Was forced to use Edge
@@HaHawk it works with medieval 2 but doesnt work with my TATW.. Strange.. How can i make it work with mods?
Why the textures still so bad I mean is there any way to improve textures like fx and lighting etc
Please help! firstly when you added Medieval2 in mediator it said ''medieval 2 total war kingdoms'' for you even though you selected the original medieval2.exe? For me when I select the medieval2.exe it says in mediator ''Medieval 2 total war'' only... And secondly I have put in everything you said in my preference CFG-file. But still there seems to be some kind of ''full-screen mode'' whenever I start up m2tw so when I tab out the shit has to load for a time, which it wasnt for you. You just alt+tab out and got Mediator on the screen while in the game! Doesnt happen for me!
Is this steam version only? I have pirated m2tw Gold so I have one Medieval 2 total war launcher and a kingdom launcher. This may be the case why it doesnt work.
Two Q's: Are you running the CD version, or steam version? And two, in your config file, what does it say under "windowed mode"?
Neither, Im running thief version so to say. It must be CD or steam? Under ''windowed = 1'', its says ''borderless_window = 1''.
Wardruna...good choice.
:)
Ohhh
I have an i3 8100 and 1060 6GB and 8GB of ram is there any way to use this with no fps drop i have fps drop like 10 to 20
Yes, first download the 4GB memory patch, and if you still need more FPS, then reduce the unit quality in your config file. You should be able to comfortably get 40-60FPS
@@HaHawk where can i download the memory patch?
it looks very good - thanks
You do need to post the correct cfg file settings because trying to follow the edits one needs to make from your quick scan through the cfg file on screen is going to be very difficult for people; and you may have omitted to mention some edits
You could just paste it into the description?
Sure thing -- I'll copy over the important parts.
2 questions. does this work with stainless steel AND i cant find the preference cfg file. it only shows 1 file with "preference" in its name and its some audio stuff
(1) Yes and (2) The CFG file will be in your main M2TW directory
Thx for answering. Maybe i didnt look right, im using steam definitive edition. i will try again this evening and maybe ill ask again :D
@@HaHawk steamcommunity.com/app/4700/discussions/0/535152511363046087/ turns out i had the same problem as this guy. now checking if it does work
@@HaHawk Okaaay. So... i will write all down, MAYBE you can help me. if its to much work then well- fuck me. also im german, so sry for my english.
Step 1: the one thing named preferences in the directory was a windows meadia player file. when i clicked at poperties it was named preferences.cfg just like in your video. still, it wasnt a cfg file. i just added a text file, renamed it like the one in your vid and copy pasted the settings from a forum post. i was able to delete the windows media player file, but it reappeared everytime i started the game. so in the end i just left both files in the directory.
Step 2: I changed the nvidia settings, all good. I had one option that you did not have, so i left this one as it was.
Step 3: I "installed" mediator etc. Just like in the video. Also i downloaded your presets. if i open mediator i can choose a preset, for example "12 - ultra sharp". if i open the game its shows the same text in the top left corner but i CANT tab out, so no windowmode for me, although i changed it in step 1. the game looks WORSE than the standard game. if i change the mediator presets the game looks different, but everytime it looks horrible and blurry etc.
Then i changed the nvidia settings to standard again, because i thought maybe thats the problem. nothing changed.
So for now i deleted my own preference text file, changed the nvidia settings to standard and deleted the connection of medieval with mediator. Now its normal again. Any ideas? Its a fucking shame. good video nonetheless, i just cant figure out whats wrong.
I used to run F.lux to block the white light of my screen to help with my insomnia on candlelight mode and set max graphics on the game to give it a gritty Mediterranean sunlight look kinda like sepia. I will try using your method also it looks good.
Haha cool, I use f.lux as well at night (it works with ReShade just fine)
if you are playing mods with Kingdoms, there are two .exe files in the steam folder - medieval2.exe and kingdoms.exe
which should I select when adding via the Reshade mediator.....?
thanks!!
You're using the disc version? Should be medieval2.exe but if that doesn't work just switch it
@@HaHawk no I'm running it off steam. So I've got it all set up now, as per your video. Opened up one of my mods, and spotted the text top left corner as I go into a battle that let's me know mediator is doing its thing in the background. So far, so good.
But I can't get mediator to float on top of my game, like you do in the video. Any ideas?
Also, I've downloaded your presets and I'm keen to just browse through those, rather than mico manage all the graphics settings myself right away. There will be a time for that but right now I thought I'd give a few of the presets a run out, see how they look. I can't see a way in mediator to select the presets? I downloaded yours and extracted them into Reshade/personalfiles/presets
After following these steps, the game now crashes to Blue Screen and restarts every time I start it.
I need some help on using Mediator.
When I change settings, it does not always apply the new settings to the game. Sometimes I would have to click the apply button. Other times I would have to permanently push to the application. Other times it would be automatic. For example, a second ago it was all automatic. When I changed the preset, the settings changed automatically. However I created a new preset for testing and then it stopped applying changes. I closed both applications and re-opened and now it is not applying settings at all. Can you offer advice on how to consistently change the graphical settings?
EDIT: I think I have this resolved now. I'll post back if I think it's not working properly again, with more info
Okay I wasted hours convincing myself I was doing it wrong. I was doing it right though. There appears to be something wrong with the software. How can you ensure that when you click "apply", the settings get applied automatically? The settings do not apply for me. Also, clicking on "permanent push to application" only sometimes applies the settings. Most of the time, the settings do not apply. This is so frustrating. I considered abandoning it and using the updated version but I don't know how to use it. So I am trying to get the older version to work. Before, it was applying settings automatically but it is not anymore. I have tried booting up Mediator before Medieval 2 and clicking on the permanent push button. But I still am left with no choice but to press permanent push for ages hoping it applies, or first changing preset and then changing back. But even that most of the time does not work.
Okay I think the problem is fixed now.
With the current crisis i ended up playing Medieval again. Nice to find some way to upgrade the graphics. Only problem i have is my game tends to crash after a battle, while loading the campaign map. (Fatal graphic error). Any idea? For some reason it always happens after a big victory :(
99% likely caused by a memory error. Did you use the 4GB patch? Search for NTcore 4gb patch and use that to update the Medieval 2 executable. More info: www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?736939-What-is-the-quot-4GB-patch-quot-Where-can-I-get-it
I use stainless steel, but stainless steel only works when I copy the medeival 2 exe and rename it to kingdoms.
So i have in my medieval 2 directory two medieval 2 exes and the one is called kingdoms.
Stainless Steel is working without any problems but when I install reshade its i got a crash report....
What could I do ?
Delete system32
im using ss and i dont have any issues.. well at first then i exited an overlay app (which is dxtory which works the same as fraps)
can I use the latest version of ReShade? Will this give me better capabilities ?
Latest version has slightly improved performance (not much but a little). The UI is different however and presets from previous versions aren't compatible, so you'll have to configure your own. Cheers
My reshade minimizes my game instead of popping up in my game like you, does anyone know how to fix this??????????
Does this tutorial not work anymore? I keep getting this error message: "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005)" before I'm even able to boot up vanilla M2TW. Using the steam version.
Just for full disclosure, I'm using the 4gb patch because EB2 is literally unplayable without it, you will have a hard barrier to progress on your first siege battle. I'm suspecting that may be the cause, but 1) it also crashes on my unpatched .exe and 2) I stand by my decision because it's pointless to mod a game you can't play. Sorry to sound aggressive, I'm just heading off the inevitable comments.
It still works. Did you get your issue sorted? Sounds like maybe something went wrong with your configuration file (medieval2.preferences.cfg). Good luck!
Very cool, does ReShade work with any other games?
Mate! You're legend 😎👍👍👍
Does it all still aplly if you play a mod? in my case it's kingdoms grand campaign. Do i need to do something different for effect to apply to my mod game?
works with any mod!
@@HaHawk Cheers!

GRAPHIC ISSUES! NEED HELP HERE:
I used the same configuration you made in the video but my units aren't as smooth as yours and the depth of field is not the same, I'm using 1920x1080 resolution but everything looks so pixelated. It's really strange.
Got any screenshots?

Even if I zoom in everything looks blurry and not focused.
Hey man,I have a problem.I used the 1.1.0 version of Reshade. When I start the game ,it doesn't open. But when I use the newest version of Reshade, the game is running fine.Should I use and older version of the game??
SPARTAN WARRIOR I'd just use whichever version works for you, in this case the latest version of reshade. Unfortunately, the presets I released will only work with the older version (shown in the video), but most of the settings/options are the same or similar, so you can still follow this guide to make your own presets. Enjoy!
Ha Hawk Can I use the older version of reshade,if I play an older version of the game?
SPARTAN WARRIOR Yeah man as far as I know any version of reshade will work with any version of the game (they all use D3D)
this is AMAZING.
Please tell me what the preset was for the opening clip! It looked so good but i cant seem to find the correct one :/
I think it's #2 or #4. One of the "minimal" ones, I believe... definitely has DOF (depth of field)
Ha Hawk Thx man :)
Followed this tutorial but didn't get the compiling effects succeed at the upper left corner of the screen..
I failed at my first attempt and actually gave up on it for a while. Stubborn as I am, I gave it a new try a couple of weeks later determined to make it work and finally succeeded. I can't remember what I did wrong in my first attempt, but if you follow the tutorial every step on the way, it should work. If you'd like to, I could send you my config file because I suspect that that's where the issue lies. The mediator can be a bit buggy sometimes and fail to apply the effects, but then one just have to try again. Usually works to first press "apply" and then press the "permanent push to the application" button.
Great video. Now I can have my game be cinematic thanks to you. I have one question though. Have you ever had trouble with the SMAA setting? Whenever I have it enabled it turns my screen dark enough to make an in game day look like night. ':D
Rogue Assassin I can't say that I have -- have you tried the different modes of SMAA? Also, FXAA looks pretty good and may not cause the darker screen (it's a little softer, which some people actually prefer). Glad you like the video!
I'll look into it. thanks!
You help me with medieval i subscribe ! Best total war ever made !
I agree, but to be fair to CA, I haven't played Attila or Warhammer yet... I just like how the M2TW engine feels, makes for amazing gameplay IMO
May I ask you what's the backround soundtrack you used at 12:25, it's awesome.
