Even Twilight, who is a recognized magical prodigy uses candles, despite also being shown as able to cast illumination directly from her horn. No doubt because when reading late at night or such, it's easier to just light a candle and be done with it than having to constantly maintain an active spell of her own. As for failing Discord's "test"; hard to say really. In someways I think at least part of Discord would want the M6 to reject him, if only because it would give him an excuse to go full blown eternal age of chaos again without having to fell guilty about it. While he does seem to genuinely care about Fluttershy, for some reason or another, he still pretty openly disregards the other five. It's really only his friendship with her that restrains his darker urges, so he might still see driving a wedge between her and the other five as a way to, "have his cake and eat it too". That said, he does seem rather legitimately overjoyed that Twilight actually would help him out, but it's hard to say if that's truly because he wants her to be his friend or just because he enjoys manipulating other into fulfilling his needs, and was above that celebrating how much he ruined her special day with Cadance, given how disappointed he is when Cadance subverts that goal by professing to having enjoyed herself anyway. Ultimately it might very well be all of the above to some measure.
And usually they can only do one at a time. If a unicorn is occupied doing an illumination spell with their horn, I don't know that they could use another spell to do much else. You can levitate multiple items at a time with the telekinetic spell, but if you want to write while you were in a dark room, you'd be out of luck if you couldn't illuminate you horn and levitate a quill at the same time.
I dunno... I still question if Discord is anybodies friend but Fluttershy's. The rest seem to be feigning friendship for fear that he'll go back to causing trouble if they don't, and Discord seems to be fully aware of that. Gives the whole thing kind of an abusive quality.
To be fair, the show almost *has to* spell out the lesson in some way. There are few exceptions and even those episodes that show more than tell still have someone at least give a cliffnotes version of the lesson. I blame the format more than the writers.
Have you heard the theory that Discord is Star Swirl the Bearded? If you think what happened in Magical Mystery Cure, the last spell Star Swirl worked on before he disappeared what it did and sense he had no access to the elements of harmony and unknown if he had friends what would it effect? Himself, making him a draconequus and would make sense in this episode trying to keep Twilight and Cadence from finding the truth, also that he has a beard.
I for one don't see why people expect Twilight to be accepting of Discord at this point. She has never liked him nor had much reason to, since in the past he has always been a jerk and antagonist, thus never giving her any reason to regard him as anything else. Recall back in Keep calm and flutter on, Twilight would have been perfectly happy leaving Discord as a stone statue and only released him because Princess Celestia decreed it so. Just because She is the element of magic, which is linked to friendship, she is not obligated to be friends with everyone. Cadance is the princess of love and yet we didn't see her extend much of that towards Sombra or the changelings now did we? Not counting the love hadooken she and Shining armor extended Crysalis of course. Friendship is a two-way street and Discord makes it pretty clear he would have gone right back to his old antics if not for his friendship with Fluttershy.
I loved this episode personally, though that kinda goes without saying if it involves Discord. I loved the song and seeing Cadence was nice. But after watching Brony Notion's theories on Discord being Star Swirl,(Which I had never thought of before.) it really made me question if Discord really cared about his friendship test. But the scene at the end where he's dancing and doesn't know Twilight's there does seem like he was genuinely happy.
Dr. Wolf I believe a friendship test has TWO ways of failing. The first like you mentioned, the tested friend failing. The second way is if the tested friend finds out it's just a test. It's very manipulative to say "If you're really my friend you'll..." or "If you love me you'll..." eventually some people will feel those relationships one sided. I thought Discord was going to learn his lesson not to test friendships. Though i suppose he was punished for his bratty behavior.
If Tarik liked Glass of Water, than you should probably show him Let's Go and Meet the Bronies. It's very similar in tone and it also features John De Lancie faux-singing

If Twilight did fail, she would have apologised to Discord for doubting that he can be a helpful ally, considering that he convinced her to go back to her friends when they searched for the Tree of Harmony in the season premiere. When Fluttershy became his friend in Keep Calm and Flutter On, she and the others were still reluctant to be his friends. And from this episode I think she would have realised that he was trying to make more friends other than Fluttershy, and even though his appearance intruded her quality time with Cadance, it made her day more exciting like Cadance said that she wanted more excitement now and then.
I was wondering when thinking back on this if this wasn't Discord taking an opportunity to measure up Cadence. Since I don't think he's ever met her before.

I think Discord might've tried to take over Equestria again. But what I'm wondering the most right now is Discord going to test the other main six ? I'm pretty sure he won't test Fluttershy because he kinda already has, but if test the other four would make for a interesting episode.
All I can say is: Dr. Wolf, your brother is running down a very similar path that I myself only walked down to becoming a brony. He sees his favorite character providing entertainment, is getting interested by several details, and slowly is getting excited about watching another episode. I'm still am guessing he probably will just want to stay a furry in the end, but I won't be surprised if one day, he states that he has become a brony. Also, another nice review.
I may have to see if you or another analyst hasn't already asked this question, but I think Discord's motives *can* be questioned. I just can't fully accept the idea "you can't analyze Discord because he's Discord." The same for Pinkie -- it seems to me that a lot of people think "you can't analyze Pinkie because she's Pinkie," but to borrow a phrase from ShortSkirts&Explosions, Pinkie Pie's world is _internally consistent_, not just random. Just because you can't immediately understand her motivations doesn't mean they don't make sense. Actually, I think this episode showcases her at some of her best and worst. First, we have a Kramer-style bursting in and excitement over used patio furniture - a strange but perfectly within the realm of Pinkie action; then we have the Homer-level stupidity of following a balloon after the overly-dramatic "I'll never forget you" - the first part a typical Pinkie over-reaction, the second something I consider to be bad writing of Pinkie; then we have the normal friendship Pinkie who both looks to Rarity for a fainting couch as well as offering an impromptu one for Discord - not particularly deep, but important nonetheless; and then she offers to basically take care of Discord by herself, promising to wait on his every need - much closer to the deep character that the Pinkie episodes of the series has shown. (Apologies if google's stupid formatting system makes that last paragraph unreadable.) I do have to agree with Teric in that there are heavy Dr. Seuss and Disney influences in this episode without being outright references. I honestly had expected Discord to rhyme "tree" when that thinking tree came out of the ground. Without meaning to sound critical, I'd like to say that for this review, Teric's part was a little over-the-top for me. Having seen the Bronies & Furries videos, I know how much more refined and controlled he can present himself, and it quite frankly grated on my nerves a bit. I realized that there were supposed to be parallels drawn between him and Pinkie/Discord, but that didn't make it much more bearable. A shame that we don't get to see your brother review Pinkie Pride, you know considering his favorite Pony is Pinkiepie and it is a Pinkiepie episode. Nah, I got the impression that Discord genuinely wanted Fluttershy's company, but was willing to settle for AJ and Rarity. That would mean he's made progress in his reformation to the point of making the first move to spend time with his "friends", but he's fully aware that most of them aren't really their friends. He knows all about disharmony, so he knows about how they feel about him, which is why he teases and tests them. That would give him a motive of jealousy for ruining Twilight's day with Cadance, because the first half of the episode contrasted how well she was received to how he was rejected.

To be honest, I'm hoping Twilights key episode has Discord in it as a focus. Why? Twilight is not only the bearer of the element of magic but the alicorn princess of friendship. In this episode, she's all but trying to get rid of Discord. If she wanted to express friendship in a meaningful way, there should be an episode where she has to deal with Discord by herself and realize that she honestly cares about him despite being a troll. The episode could start out with Discord busrting into twilights house and Discord nervously asking her for help with something personal. When she calls him out on his last trick, he'd tells her its not like that and that the matter is serious. In my head canon, Discord and Celestia are former lovers and or friends, so when Twilight suggests asking Celestia to help, he scowls at her and says something like "this is something quite personal for me. I'd rather keep this between me and my friends. And I have long since stopped considering the princess my friend." Hell, it could be a world building episode where Discord takes the mane 6 somewhere new or it could tell the story of Discord himself.
It's always interesting to see how non-fans react to the episodes. One complaint though, for the love of Luna, Teric, please don't eat over the mic again.

I noticed another bit of growth in discord in de second part of princes twilight sparkle wen twilight returns from the ever free forest discord is enjoying the chaos in town so much he is oblivious to the fact 2 ponies next to him are in danger but wen twilight scolds him he notices it and responds in a shock like he did something wrong its small I know but its there
I have to wonder, and forgive me if you have already stated this before but, which one of you is older again? I get the feeling that Teric is younger, but at the same time I'm not really sure. But anywho, you two were definitely entertaining, did he ever actually get to watching the Weird Al episode?

In honesty, i think Discord might have reacted with a sour but slightly forgiving nature ( shocking to think, but yes.) my reasoning is that, because he is friends with Fluttershy, he may have simply wanted to see if Twilight, the leader of the main six, would accept him as a friend in the first place. I don't think he considered the other ponies to be his friends before this episode, and with a good reason on his part. It is obvious that their relationship has gotten better, but the others still do not trust him as friends normally do. His actions showed me that Discord was simply testing the possibility of friendship, rather than full on expecting her to be a friend. To me, it wasn't just a test for Twilight on her relationship with Discord, but also with her respect of Fluttershy's choice of a friend in Discord. That's just my opinion though :)
i loved this episode cause it had cadance and it hat discord and it had an awesome song with hilarious animations but i found the serpent... thing... creature rather stupid
I think that if twilight failed he wouldn't really be that mad. he KNOWS that he was setting rediculously high standards, he would probably joke about it in that serious way of his. but... since the concept of friendship is so new to him, it could very well ended up damaging their friendship.

I noticed another bit of growth in discord in de second part of princes twilight sparkle wen twilight returns from the ever free forest discord is enjoying the chaos in town so much he is oblivious to the fact 2 ponies next to him are in danger but wen twilight scolds him he notices it and responds in a shock like he did something wrong its small I know but its there
I have to wonder, and forgive me if you have already stated this before but, which one of you is older again? I get the feeling that Teric is younger, but at the same time I'm not really sure. But anywho, you two were definitely entertaining, did he ever actually get to watching the Weird Al episode?

Also it's good to know i'm not the only full furry that has a soft spot for FiM especially if it involves discord and pinkie pie.
In honesty, i think Discord might have reacted with a sour but slightly forgiving nature ( shocking to think, but yes.) my reasoning is that, because he is friends with Fluttershy, he may have simply wanted to see if Twilight, the leader of the main six, would accept him as a friend in the first place. I don't think he considered the other ponies to be his friends before this episode, and with a good reason on his part. It is obvious that their relationship has gotten better, but the others still do not trust him as friends normally do. His actions showed me that Discord was simply testing the possibility of friendship, rather than full on expecting her to be a friend. To me, it wasn't just a test for Twilight on her relationship with Discord, but also with her respect of Fluttershy's choice of a friend in Discord.
That's just my opinion though :)
i loved this episode cause it had cadance and it hat discord and it had an awesome song with hilarious animations
but i found the serpent... thing... creature rather stupid
IF twilight failed the test or did not do the test it would probably be a lot of chaos going on!
I think that if twilight failed he wouldn't really be that mad. he KNOWS that he was setting rediculously high standards, he would probably joke about it in that serious way of his. but... since the concept of friendship is so new to him, it could very well ended up damaging their friendship.
