Took the ride on winter 2020. As someone who is from a tropical country, this was best 6 hours of magical snowy journey that I have ever experienced.
The efforts you go to with the very early morning rises/departures and late night arrivals/depzrtures shows your true dedication to enlighten and entertain your viewers. Thank you M/s Kuga on behalf of all your subscribers it is greatly appreciated. I can only imagine how cold it was there at 5.30am walking to the station. A very different type of journey on a train i'm more familiar with but the white scape surroundings I would live to experience on a train ride. I just watch these for sleep. Japan and the entire Korean peninsula all looks so peaceful. I wish there was footage of train rides through DPRK for me to watch but I like Japan more. :) Perfect mix of rural and metropolitan. Not to mention the sea voyages makes me from USA so envious even though my country is gorgeous as well. Much love for your channel.

Thank you for posting this video and the recent videos from your trips (Hokkaido). I've always heard so much about the southern prefectures and cities in southern Japan - Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Osaka, Kobe, Hiroshima, and Nagano. I hardly had received any information about the north, especially Hokkaido. It's great that you are providing us with so much information and insight about Hokkaido, especially Sapporo, Wakkanai, Otaru, Cape Soya, and Abashiri. I hope to visit there soon upon a friend that's now living near Asashikawa.

I like how all Japans trains are spotlessly clean and tidy. Best in world?
Of course, in the Meiji Period Hokkaido was only "unexplored" from the viewpoint of the Japanese people--the indigenous Ainu had been living there for centuries before they were marginalized and their culture nearly wiped out by settlers from the other Japanese islands. Their linguistic mark has been left on many of the unusual-sounding (from the perspective of the Japanese language) place names and station names you see throughout Hokkaido.

Nice, basic ride! I doubt you'd be able to drive in 5.5 hours, especially in that snow. Certainly not as safely so the train seems to be the best bet. The seats turning around like that is unique. Don't see that in many other trains, even in the U.S. Good video! 😉

Your next excursion is on a bicycle to the local Family Mart.
Next tour you can take a little relaxing in an mixed onsen, with hot mineral water and to live in an old traditionel ryokan. It's owner a family.

This trip was taken at the end of February, so I would assume the snow is gone (or at least melting) by now.
Oh wow...you can just swivel the seats round! Try suggesting that to the train operators where I live in the UK and they’d immediately come out with a bunch of reasons as to why it’s not possible.

kind of an expensive ticket isn't it? different travel times might affect prices but today I am seeing flights from Memanbetsu/Ozora to sapporo for under 60 USD. Makes me wonder how the airlines can run at those prices if the trains cost more. I admit I would prefer taking the express train for the novelty of being on rail but for everyone else it makes me fear for the future of the passenger rail infrastructure.
Probably very few people take it the full distance. I would guess their main customers are people at towns and cities along the way that are not well served by air.

Thank you for sharing I stayed one night in Abashiri planned to do ice drift boat but was bad weather so cancelled I took train from Sapporo for it so bit dissapointed . also Feb I did get to enjoy Ryuhyo Monogatari Train that was wonderful Loved Abashiri there was a nice restaraunt for seafood but sadly that was closed I plan to go back as its beautiful in winter and I love the trains. The scenery on this trip is so beautiful.

It’s almost as if Japan Rail never developed its Hokkaido network. That diesel train is however, probably what you need to get through all that snow. Thank you for sharing

It is a very nice ride to do (done it several years ago during fall).
I’m from Wakkanai and I thought the Wakkanai to Hakodate train was longer. I used to ride from Wakkanai to Ueno and it took 28 hours including the Hakodate-Aomori ferry.
Very nice ride. No hitches. Not crowded. AND, WAS YOUR SNACK REALLY "NICE"? Most on the go food is just okay. I've had a bullet train lunch and it WAS VERY GOOD. So, I must be speaking of U.S. travel food, which is mostly miss and not a good hit. You have really great travel videos. ❤🌸🤗😊🌸.

Wow, it still snows so heavily up there in April. Watching from Australia, but lived in Kyushu. Watching your videos reminds me of my time in Japan, but never got the chance to visit Hokkaido.
From the looks of it, Hokkaido's natural geography has more in common with Russia than it does Japan. This really looks like Kamchatka.
