I was a kid when this was filmed but I still remember Conrail fondly. It was a wonderful railroad as a kid. I remember friendly crews who were always eager to give me and my brother a nice horn show when we waved at them as they went thru town. Conrail will always be my favorite fallen flag and I would give almost anything to have it back with all its wonderful old EMD GP38s and dash 8s and SD40-2s. I still get chills whenever I hear a leslie RS3LR horn as it has so many memories attached to it. Loved seeing those wonderful Big Blue trains again.
I used to live in Massachusetts along the Berkshire Sub. Westfield, West Springfield and Springfield were my spots. I’m glad I used to take days off to railfan. A mix of EMDs and GEs was always my favorite sound for some reason.
Great video as always! I had a RCA S-video camcorder and it worked great back in the day. If you recorded on the fast speed the quality of the sound was great. I mostly recorded the warbirds in flight at the Kalamazoo Air Zoo.
To this day...NO RAILROAD matches the mystique of Conrail. I'm so lucky I was raised in Conrail territory as a child. NS is good. I loved Chessie but CSX had to grow on me. But no railroad like Conrail before or after.
Lot of Conrail Trains my Fad work out of Conway Way Yard. He Run PIES Conway. To Harrington, DEL,with a Load of Chrysler Autoparts and Frames. For Chrysler Plant in Newark. From 1990-94 then he was REASSIGN to Run STPI Sterling Hts,Mi to Conway to Connect to PIES from 1995 till he Retired in2001
Wikipedia says Conrail purchased 161 SD40-2's. I'm assuming these were in addition to the SD40's ( a shorter model with less extended trucks and shorter "porches") from Penn Central, or other railroads that Conrail inherited. Otherwise, the SD40 and SD40-2 was the exact same model and both made 3000 horses.
CR in later years rebuilt the regular SD40s to an upgraded standard. I remember seeing first hand in 2008 in cincy on CSX,,,,(that is another story)a SD40 with its maintenance record in the cab. build date was 1966. obviously a former PRR. most certainly one of the rebuilds.

At 4:49, even in 1994 the was still some Penn Central rolling stock around!
Cool video, takes me back to a time when I took railroading for granted. Sad to think of all of the fallen flags since then
Thanks for posting.
We have lost so much over the years, and yah. Your right! We did take it for granted. Thanks for watching...

Yeah me too.... Awesome video Jack
I feel the same. No modern railroad matches the mystique of Old Blue. As a kid I was so used to seeing them you never imagined when you wouldn't.
Hearing the 40s at full tilt is just sweet music, love the new footage coming out. 10/10
Thanks Austin. More coming out really soon. So keep an eye out. Thanks for watching...
Another great one Jack thank you. Miss "Big Blue".

SD40's everywhere!
Don't you just love it! I love those motors. There was nothing they couldn't do. Thanks for watching...
2-3 years earlier, the helpers on the shoe were ex-EL SD45-2s.
thank you friend for sharing this beautiful moment of conrail as they are rare videos!
Glad you enjoyed it Renato. There will be more coming. Thanks for watching my friend.

My Dad
I saw some brand new conrails with Black spewing off of them. Is that from the Penn central paint underneath?
Cool and good night
Thanks, and good night to you as well. Thanks for watching...

Yah Tommy. That was in addition to the inherited stuff. Thanks for watching...
Lovin' it! Most strikingly beautiful freight locomotive ever built (besides F-units). A burly monster, it was the industry standard.
Actually, Conrail bought 167 SD40-2's, not 161. It was an excellent choice by the railroad.

Thanks Jeff.
Your welcome!!
Cool video!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for watching...
Conrail did not come about until April of 1976, great video though! Okay I see it is 1994 in the title, it said 1974 at beginning of the video.
Title card at the beginning of the video says 1974....?
There's a typo in the title, says 1974 ;)
LOL, Oh crow!!! That was before Conrail was form! To late to change it now. Oh well. Thanks for the HU.
jackmp294.5™ thanks 4 posts this video this bring back childhood memories
