It used to make me very angry when my mother would use my life experiences as examples. She would inevitably select the most shameful ones under the guise of trying to use them so my sisters wouldn’t make the same mistakes. I finally called her out stating that if people were capable of learning from the mistakes of others there would be a giant book which contained all of the lessons of life from the people who came before them and it would be passed down for subsequent generations. People learn from their own experiences and they understand the lesson when they have the capacity to comprehend and apply it.
