  • In the world of #Battletech, it would appear that the Helicopter, or #VTOL, still very much has a place on the battlefield. While #Battlemechs and AFVs dominate the ground, and #Aerospace Fighters dominate the air, the balance in-between is ruled by these 20th century derived vehicles.
    The #Warrior is a product of the #InnerSphere, and more specifically #HouseSteiner, or the #LyranCommonwealth, but it eventually sees adoptions through the entirety of the Sphere, and the #Periphery as well.
    So, let's look at this #SuccessWars born raptor. This 20-ton nightmare, because to underestimate this vicious little thing, is to invite destruction.

    The Warrior is the most efficient VTOL design in Battle Tech. If you keep the Warrior moving 10+ hexes a turn and firing at extreme range the very few mechs that can get it into firing range will have a hard time hitting. That said, an AC/2 is just a minor annoyance. Good enemy commanders would probably just ignore the existence of the Warrior until larger strategic threats are eliminated. Bad commanders would send a detachment of scout mechs to wreck up these annoyances, which would help dismantle the enemy formation and make the rest of their assets more vulnerable to being isolated and destroyed.
    Out of all the variants, I like the base Warrior the best. The variants that give up the AC/2 for LRMs give up the Warrior's greatest defense: range. They also are more expensive. The Warrior is a light harasser, and upping its damage potential by reducing its ability to survive is a questionable move. If you are looking for LRM support, get a tank. VTOLs are just too vulnerable in comparison. The RAC/2 version is amusing, but the increased cost for a distraction is probably putting the cart before the horse in this case. Cheap and annoying is the Warrior's greatest virtues.

    • @observationsfromthebunker9639
      @observationsfromthebunker9639 Год назад +2

      Damage is damage. Sooner or later the mech/vehicle blows up from no more armor. Or someone has to take time and material to repair the armor. Evey minute your enemy has to waste to fix AC/2 damage is a minute that could be used on something else.

      @amargasaurus5337 10 месяцев назад

      There's an argument for the LRM10 version being more effective at actually drawing a modicum of enemy attention.
      It's significantly riskier for not so much reward, but if you're going against a good commander and _need_ the Warrior to be actually disruptive rather than only annoying, the LRM10 might be just enticing enough to push the enemy commander into making an unfortunate mistake.

    The warrior is proof that not everything has to be a one man army. A good army has multiple tools at their disposal, and the Warrior is unmatched for its speed and ability to just ignore terrain. While most of the conversation around units in these deep dives is understandably centered around combat effectiveness, the true power of helicopters is maneuverability. While mechs can traverse most terrain, they are slowed down in certain extremes, whereas helicopters don't care. Therefore, the effective use of something like a Warrior is entirely situational. In a standup fight on an open plain, it's not going to accomplish much. But in mountainous terrain where it can get cover against targets who struggle to maneuver, the warrior would really come into it's own.

    Excellent video. I was playing a Time of War campaign set in 3025, and our group decided to carry out a direct assault on one of the opposition's bases that was in a city. The defenders? A handful of turrets with large lasers and light LRMs, two standard Urbies, and a wing of Warrior H-7s (4). Turrets were easy to hit as they don't move, Urbies almost don't move so were easy to out flank, while dealing with those two defenses here come those 4 Warriors taking shots at our mechs' asses the whole while!
    I think the Warriors ended up doing more damage overall then the turrets or Urbies honestly. Even after the second Uribe went down, they GM had the Warriors harassing our mechs until we took down one of them. That, that was satisfying though!

And you only realize just how scary they truly can be in MW5 when the vtols are wearing you down with a constant barrage of AC2 rounds from 2000 meters away and none of your weapons can even reach them and most of your armor's in the red from all the fighting you've done

      And that's why the big vtol in that game usually has 2 ac5's and dosn't like to hover too close to directly over mechs(so zombie mechs can't hit them). If they didn't severely limit how the aircraft should fight I am of the belief that there would be a much greater need for things like a Blackjack, Jager, or Rifleman AI lancemates.

    Hello Red.
    I know the Warrior VTOL. I've used it in the past to good effect. Not only that, but I almost always chose the variant(s) with an ICE engine and the longest ranged weapon possible.
    When fielded and used correctly, they can become a true danger for most tanks and other vehicles, as well as other VTOLs. Even Mechs fear this lightweight combatant, or should. Since with the Warrior's speed, one can easily use terrain to good effect to get around behind an Enemy formation and attack their thin rear armoring.
    Being a relatively light, and cheap unit. A Commander can field multiples of this vehicle against almost any foe, in nearly any terrain. And with the Warrior's speed, fear little in the way of return fire by the Enemy.
    As an example of their usage, I fielded four Warriors in one battle, moving them as a unit along the Enemy's flanks to turn in to attack with their AC-2's. It only took a few such attacks to pierce Mech rear armoring, and do 'critical' damage to them.
    Any attention drawn to the Warriors would lessen the Enemy's attacking damage potential, thus allowing my other units to progress and deal their own damages almost untouched. If the Warriors were ignored, however, they would continue to poke and prod the Enemy's forces and deal more critical hits, which would have lasting effects on the Enemy units.
    Thus showcasing the Warrior's real effect in combat... Scouting, harassing, and doing just enough damage to make themselves a factor for the Enemy to keep ever in mind, while risking little of my own force's combat potential. Given multiple units, the Warrior can be a 'game changer' on the tabletops, and a unit well worth their purchase price to any Commander.

    There is a simple benefit to going with 21 tons over 20. While the internal structure, controls and lift equipment are all heavier (and thus weigh more than the extra ton added), the lift factor for engine selection goes up. Which is why the 7s can get 9 MP from a 50 rated engine and the 8 requires a 105 for 10. Not as 'clean' as 5 ton increments, but I love the 7C.

    I remember one fun tabletop scenario we did. It was a race around the map through various checkpoints. Up to 6 of any type of craft were allowed, up to a certain tonnage and battle value limit, and you were scored based on how much tonnage you got through each checkpoint. Well, I did some calculations. I determined only a VTOL or hovercraft had any chance of winning. So I chose 6 15-ton Marten Scout VTOLs, and used my BV to give them 0/0 pilots. I loaded their tiny SRM-2 launchers with Inferno SRMs, which basically meant any enemy vehicle I hit was dead. It also meant that I could easily afford to lose a VTOL or two since each loss would only remove a small amount of my total tonnage. And with six chances to hit at 0/0, it was pretty much a guarantee ONE of them would hit the target if I focus fired.
    When my buddy saw what I had brought, he immediately knew that I was going to win. He then changed his loadout to a couple of antiaircraft tanks to try to take me out (as he stated, he knew he couldn't win so he wanted to try to keep me from winning). It didn't work, and as I recall I set one on fire as I flew by and blew it up. No one else thought to load Infernos, and it was a slaughter.

AC of course being its primary and should engage light targets or mechs back in hope of a golden bb or even weaken the rear armor enough to create holes for other units to take advantage.

    The Warrior - the Kamov Ka-50 Black Shark of Battletech (despite being designed by Lyran's Lockheed), is a sound attack helicopter design with the best feats of the Black Shark. Kamov's Contra-rotating main rotors omitted the need for a tail rotor to maintain flight balance & enable side-strafe firing. A long range armament allows the Warrior to be effectively deadly as a frontline recon aircraft

    Assuming you aren't dedicating veteran or elite pilots to pilot these, which sounds nuts, , the numbers to use this break down something like this: move flank speed, engage at long range, and average gunnery for a regular pilot of 4. That's a 10+ before you consider enemy movement or possible terrain modifiers. I guess it's good that 1 ton of AC2 ammo is 50 shots because I see a lot of missed shots when used at max range and flank movement. We have used these on the tabletop, and it only takes one annoyed assault mech with a few long range weapons to empty the skies. Great video, Red...not my favorite unit but you helped bring life to the Warrior.

    The warrior H-7C and the H-10 are probably my favorite variants without getting into the advanced rules of the S-9 (which are probably worth it in the Ilclan era given how many more options people have to deal with long range harassers) The H-7C has an underrated asset, 2 tons of LRM ammunition . Some specially ammo say some semi-guided LRMs or thunder munitions can really improve the threat the unit offers without having to invest in a more expensive unit. The H-10 is probably the cheapest deployment vehicle for IS battle armor if you plan to push them forward to claim an objective or hide them in a relatively safe low cost vehicle until a vulnerable unit is exposed for a lightning attack.

    Truth on them being cannon fodder in Mechwarrior 5, and I'd love to have properly deployed Warriors to worry about. It'd be a good way to rush a mission with the threat of being shelled by AC/2 rounds for most, if not all of the mission, and a reason to justify having an anti-air mech like a Rifleman around. Also if their numbers start adding up? One gun is chip damage. Two is twice that. Anything more? Ouch! That's a lot of damage over time!
    Still, as a commander in that regard, I still respect them on the battlefield, cannon fodder or not. Chip damage is chip damage, and until my forces have safely withdrawn, a Warrior with a laser and/or missiles is damage that I'd rather not have adding up.

      Ironically, having fast warrior VTOLs with AC/2s always maintaining max firing range in MW5 would be dangerous and extremely difficult to play against. AC/2s are deadly if you can hit the same part over and over, imagine 5 of them constantly peppering a mech while heavier forces occupy their attention.

    • @HazopGaze
      @HazopGaze Год назад +1

      @@cobalt968 Oh, I know. That's half the point of my comment. Would it be fun? Probably not for the majority. Like, it makes a degree of sense as to why MW5 has Warriors as cannon fodder.
      I'm a little bit of a masochist when it comes to gaming, though. I like it when things are unfair or oppressive. To me, it's ten times more satisfying to dive into hell, suffer, and then stand victorious in the end.
      I think the least they could do is use AC/2s and do strafing runs or something from high altitude. That way they can still harass from a reasonable range but not be impossible to kill in most circumstances.

    AC/2 and AC/5 autocannons may not be in most cases a good weapon on a mech.
    But they are solid on everything else. Warrior VTOL is one of the better examples of that. It might not hit hard, but it can hit. And often it's target can't hit back. Good if your in the helicopter, bad if your the target.
    I'd gone LB-X 2 over a Ultra/2. But I like the concept of a multi ton shotgun shooting 22kg/almost 50 pound shotgun shells at a target roughly half a mile away.
    Or keep the standard AC/2 and throw in 20-ish AP, or Precision rounds. Your not trying for a knock out blow in a lightly armed VTOL. So accuracy at range is the name of the game. Crits are a bonus.
    Every round that hits worse case is something a enemy Tech/Astech has to potentially fix later on. Likely with salvage, or precious limited resources brought in system.

    All jokes aside, its really good that the game does have something like this to where it's a relatively light helicopter unit because the amount of utility that you will get out of something like this, especially when mechs aren't involved and it's just a planet trying to do its own thing is extremely useful. Because not everybody can afford to station a fast battlemech on every single world let alone every single FOB.
    Edit: all that is to say that, it really does help sell the setting much like how the charger or the assassin (and the story behind them) makes it much more believable and it is reasonable that someone could try and use something like this on the battlefield... Besides, we all love the smell of napalm in the morning :P

    idk, I've tried to use them as described here. If they could hit every turn that might be something. But close enough in to make that likely puts them in range of reprisal. And 2 damage a turn for say 10 turns isn't a lot of return for 295 BV. You could get a Packrat with 7/11 move and an SRM6 for one point less. They make tons of sense in universe, but in the context of the tabletop skirmish game the base model seems bad. The AC5 version only needs to land 4 hits to match the theoretical max of the AC2 version over the course of an average skirmish. That said, they did *something* in my test game. I got a few motive crits on the enemy tanks from obnoxiously long range.
