@@egk2584 I was fortunate enough to first see them in syndication, so this one was shown first. Oddly enough, it was local programming on the FOX affiliate channel in my area. This didn't have a lot of life in syndication, though. Since there were so few episodes, it wasn't much of a filler of time.
A “Crazy Ivan” is a term from 1980’s submarine warfare. Noisy engines meant submarines had zero sensors looking aft (toward the tail of the boat), and enemy boats used to stalk them by hiding behind them in their blind spot. So Russian sub commanders would periodically make abrupt 180 degree or 360 degree turns so they could point their bow sensors (on the nose of the boat) at the place that was previously in their blind spot. This kept enemy vessels from following too closely, lest they be picked up by the bow sensors. Since this was a Russian tactic, and Russians were referred to in slang as Ivan, these abrupt, unpredictable maneuvers were called Crazy Ivans. Mal uses it here to mean a super fast, 180 degree turn in flying.
Huge thanks and ❤ for watching this show. It's intelligent and daring in ways that most shows don't even attempt. There's enough humor to take the edge off the dread and enough honest emotion to balance the action and sci-fi elements. You're in for one fantastic ride and I'm envious of your ability to experience it for the first time.
@@NiaMakiReacts Oh, you are finished. Did you also watch 'The River Tam Sessions' & then the movie 'Serenity'? For another deep Sci Fi series - I highly recommend 'Babylon 5'. DISCLAIMER - B5 takes an enormous amount of time world building. For many, it takes at least half of season 1 before things REALLY start getting interesting. This series is like a giant novel in film format.
When they say Inara is making an honest living, the context is that Companions are more like Geishas than the modern Western view of sex work. She's highly educated and can move in the highest social circles in society. She offers a service, provides that service, and gets paid. Unlike the crew who engage in salvage, smuggling, and other criminal activities. Happy to see you reacting to this, looking forwards to more!
But Geishas have masters and are subservient, Companions are not. Companions do not have a master they are beholden to. Companions choose their partners Geishas do not. There are simiarities but are different in very fundmental ways.
Actually closer to the classical idea of the Greek hetaera/hetaira (probably via the character of Tamara Sperling from Heinlein's Time Enough for Love I suspect). Especially since geisha are purely entertainers and not courtesans (oiran) or prostitutes (yūjo). The common Greek prostitutes (that simply provided sexual services for money) were known as pornai. Although that said, the classical view of these individuals, who were entitled to choose their own lovers, attend symposiums (after dinner meetings where business was discussed), and were quite rich in their own right, was heavily influenced by the very patriarchal Romans, who considered them to be courtesans. In actuality they were probably just women who were rich enough in their own right to do as they will. And by rich, I mean RICH. One of the more famous hetaira, Phyrne of Thespis, offered to personally fund the rebuilding of the walls of walls of Thebes out of her own pocket. Before being unsuccessfully put on trial for being an uppity woman (and therefore destructive of the social order as defined by the gods [asebeia]) by a spurned former lover.
@@reverance_pavane Thank you, I wasn't actually sure of the correct term from Greek. I'll add that to my lexicon. Ultimately, though, the point of my comment was to inform Nia Maki why Inara is treated the way she is quickly, so I pulled Geisha out of the air as a commonly known (but poorly understood) term for non-Western sex work.
@@fullmoonprepping4024 Really I was thinking of high-rank Oiran, not Geisha, but figured that most non-historians probably don't know the term. Priestess of Inanna or Ishtar would probably also work as an example, but would run into the same issue.
I think of them more as a modern-day take of Imperial chinese courtesans. The institution is highly respected but not the women themselves. What makes Mal different is that he respects Inara but hates the institution.
One of the things I really like about the show is the silent space - it always kind of irks me when you can hear massive explosions, gunfire, even footsteps and other sounds in space in movies.
I was about to note this. It is creatively risky, since it takes more effort to make space scenes engaging. When it's done right it is very refreshing. All in all, it is super annoying when physics is ignored in a world/universe that represents our own, because it's lazy.
Great catch on Mal Losing his religion after the 'Battle of Serenity' that you saw at the beginning of the episode. I've watched a lot of reactions to Firefly and you are the first to pick that up! That got you a new subscriber!

I’ve watched a LOT of Firefly reactions, and I’ve never seen someone get that many predictions right(bowlcut, sister, etc.). I’ll be watching your career with great interest…
Excellent choice to react to. Looking forward to your 'Firefly' Journey. This Sci Fi genre is called a 'Space Western'. There is no such thing as a bad Firefly episode. They range from good to great to masterpiece. Sadly, we only have a little more than half a season. New FOX Studio Execs hired in clean slated the projects of the old FOX Execs for their own shows - including 'Firefly'. These execs pulled many dirty tricks to get 'Firefly' canceled. Public support for the series managed to push out a 'Serenity' Movie years later to finish the main story. 'That Man's Psychotic!' - Mal also had an ulterior motive. He was observing Simon's response. Simon showed genuine concern to try to help Kaylee. That concern is why Simon was given the offer to become part of the crew.
Yep. Mal knows that at any time the entire crews survival could depend on just one of them. He has to be able to trust each person on the crew implicitly.
"Firefly" Pilot, "Serenity": The battle between The Inner Ring Alliance vs. the Outer Rim Rebels/Browcoats comes to a sudden end. I watched every episode that Fox TV deigned to broadcast, when they felt like it. But I didn't see "Firefly" until I bought the DVD set and discovered the out-of-sequence/didn't-broadcast episodes that make up "the 'verse."
Somewhere in the multiverse is a planet earth where a certain show about "Nothing" (Seinfeld) got canceled after one season, but somehow multiple seasons of FireFly got made. I suggest we seek out that particular planet earth and make a trade.
Joss Whedon is on the Hollywood blacklist right now because of some personal scandals, but he is a master story teller- he knows exactly how to manipulate and hook an audience. You are correct, we covered a lot of ground in this pilot- we met everybody, we saw their difficulties, there was a lot of action, and like you, we're not on the edge of our seats anymore, but we're invested. I first saw this in 2005, i'm still invested in it. Welcome to Our boat.
Kinda strange, this scandal. I've never seen anything specific - something I can really make my own opinion about. If anybody's got good pointers, I'll appreciare that.

Couple things about the show: a Companion I guess is a version of futuristic Geisha. The reason why they speak Mandarin and English is because those are the cultures that they say survive to the stars however Mandarin is seen as low born talk so the show uses this trope as swearing(I'm told it is actual swears that made it past the censors). Also the reason for the mix of high tech and low tech is by design, this is a smuggler one breakdown away from doom storyline not Starfleet, meals are usually tasteless protein bars(explains Kaylee and the strawberry) but they are a dysfunctional family to each other but also closed ranks loyal to each other. As the show progress you will see more of that family dynamic but a word of warning box of tissues will be needed for the some episodes and a case of tissues for the movie if you watch(you need to watch it)
"and if we are very, very lucky, they will do it in that order." Joss Weadon is very good at character development, but he is top tier when it comes to dialogue! Just when you think he hit you with the most powerful line . . . he then 'one ups' that line.
Watching people discover this show for the first time never gets old. He's kind of an acquired taste, but Jayne Cobb gives everyone else someone to play off of and the show wouldn't be half as good without him keeping everyone on their toes. My personal favorite character in the show, although Shepherd Book, portrayed by always-classy Ron Glass (RIP), gives him a run for his money. Definitely an underrated and often overlooked character, portrayed to perfection by Adam Baldwin.
It was being broadcast in 4:3, so cropping hid that little issue. They needed Wash to sit back to be in frame, so he faked it. Now that we see the whole 16:9 width, it does tend to stick out. Another thing you may not have noticed - when Wash was driving the mule off Serenity near the beginning, you can see an arm dragging the mule forward.
Whedon shot the scenes simtaneously in both aspects, usually blocked to force the best shots chosen from the widescreen. That was a rarity where the camera failed on the closeup, and they used the widescreen simply to avoid another day of filming, even though the control yoke had been removed for the closeup.
Jewel Staite REALLY sold the longing for fresh food when Kaylee tasted the strawberry. Early on at signings and conventions, she had to let the fans know not to bring good-intentioned homemade strawberry dishes, because she hates strawberries. She felt badly about it, but she was getting more goods than she could share.

For story world context: Think of the "outer planets" as the territories after the Civil War. Towns barely hanging on, hardscrabble farms one crop failure from starvation. Outlaws running rampant. The "western" feel is because it's easier and cheaper to ship draft animal embryos to the outer planets than tech machines. There's no money to support those tech machines, and no infrastructure to build their own. For the Firefly crew, the only easy day was yesterday (because they survived that one). Every day is another battle to survive and stay flying. Tomorrow is to far away to worry about.
did you notice the alliance bombing the positions after mal and zoe's men surrendered?slaughter - the best way to show from the start who the bad guys are.
When it comes to Whedon, even being part of the main cast doesn't always save a character. He even told the whole Firefly cast, day one, not to get too comfortable, becase any of them could be killed off at any time.
Woo! This is such a good show! I hope you enjoy it. And since it's a short one (sadly cancelled after one season, plus the movie), afterwards I would recommend Dollhouse. It's another Joss Whedon show, and while he may have... issues... as a person, he's an amazing writer!

The first time I watched it I somehow missed the episode Janestown and a couple months later found out about it and that feeling of having more is indescribable. It's literally my personal favorite episode too.
It's not like it was the last show, wrapping everything up, saying goodbye to all their viewers after several seasons. So you might as well watch it and it is certainly worth it.
Nathan Fillion had two rules for his agent. 1. No musical nor Shakespeare roles. 2. If Joss Whedon calls with a role, you don't give him a chance to describe it, you say "YES!" automatically. That is why after Firefly, Nathan was in "Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog" (singing in a musical) and "Much Ado About Nothing" (Joss Whedon's modern retelling of Shakespeare).
in the world of Firefly everyone curses in Chinese. in part it was a way to get around censors but it's also a piece of worldbuilding, one of the empires from Earth That Was that settled the Verse was China. there's no translations but you can pretty much always get the meaning behind what they're saying.
So happy you're reacting to this, but wonder why you've changed the format to a small screen in the corner when previously you did full screen movie with a circular cut-out of your face which was easier to watch?
My favorite TV series ever. I watched it when it first came out in 2002. Really glad to be on this journey as you experience Firefly for the first time. Mal is definitely my favorite character and Kaylee is my second favorite. Can't wait to see your reaction to the movie once you finish the series.
God, this show just gets better with time. Joss Weadon can freakin' write. You can cancel the man but not the work. Or quality. The cast is top tier. Only thirteen hour episodes, but if you look at them cinematically, we got a trilogy of films that are all masterpieces. Thank you for giving us a chance to see this great show through new eyes again.

Welcome to the ride of a lifetime! This is truly one of the greatest shows ever and by the time you've finished you'll think of Serenity and her crew as family.
I give you until the end of the next episode for you to become a dedicated Browncoat. The hard cases usually hold out until about episode 4, which is a very strong Mal and Kaylee episode. But I think you're already in it until the end.
Firefly?!? Instant sub! From the comments I see you've watched it all already, yay! Another Browncoat joins the crew. :) Looking forward to watching your journey. I'm sure you've already heard how the network screwed it up, but if not, I'll leave that for others to describe.
I like your reactions and looking forward to the next one. The tsink and toilets hat fold up are common on US submarines to save space. i spent three and a half years assigned to one. BTW the pronunciation is sub mareener if you ever meet one. Never call a peron a sub mariner. It's an insult.
Excellent reaction! You picked up on a lot of things that most people don't this early. I also liked how much you laughed at one of my favorite lines: When Simon asks (about Jayne), "What do you pay him for?" and Mal answers, "Public relations." The funniest thing about this is that there's a (twisted) sense in which it's true.
You're going to love this show - and the movie that comes after. And the crew will grow on you, including Jayne Cobb. I really enjoy your reaction to this, and I'm looking forward to seeing you go through the rest of the series. I'm subscribing so I can keep watching.
"Ivan" is a Crazy Ivan, a maneuver Soviet subs used to do to evade pursuit. they'd suddenly do a 180 so their SONAR sensors in the nose were facing back then turn them on full blast, temporarily blinding whoever was behind them so they could have time to turn in a new direction & get away without being seen.
this series was so much fun. i personally found it to be different than the other sci-fi shows, and it makes you feel everything, good and bad. it is a shame that "hollywood" wouldn't accept it in the long run. i mean you can still catch fan based gatherings and celebrations for it 20 yrs later. and the cast still attend conventions all over the country. there is a magic with the group that is hard to find in shows with new ideas.
If you have prerecorded the entire run, disregard. Kleenex aplenty, reactions will cover the spectrum from joy to shock to sadness to anger to bliss to everything. Browncoats will not spoil the reaction, but will bide our time to share once scenes have been reacted to.
First of all . . . Yay! I am so happy you are reacting to this show. Second of all . . . I am one of those fans that think that it was a great series and had a lot more it could have grown into 😞

Three minutes in and already subscribed. I think I'm really going to like your reactions to this epic show. Your insights already are spot on. Welcome to the Brown Coats.
Browncoats. Because we are too pretty to die.
I found your channel via Firefly. I really enjoyed your reaction.
United States and China combined. That is why there is a mixture of language.
Chinese was used to hide swear words.
With no Asian actors in the main cast...
@@LordVolkov We don't need a token, we are looking at 80+ worlds spinning through the 'Verse. This is science fiction and Old West. We get 14 episodes and a movie when Joss had plans for 5+ seasons at 22 episodes/season.
Don't be that guy.
This is very much a pilot episode, testing the waters of a new show. You’ll see some minor changes in personalities in the characters going forward, especially Mal.
Looking forward to Firefly Fridays. With how invested you've gotten from just this episode i know you're gonna love this series.

Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand.
I don't care, I'm still free, you can't take the sky from me.
Take me out to the black, tell them I ain't comin back.
Burn the land and boil the sea, you can't take the sky from me.
There's no place, I can be, since I've found Serenity...
- Welcome to the Browncoat community!
this is the first steps of a wonderful journey the show is amazing, great stories, interesting family dynamic, well acted and the follow up movie is amazing is well. the premise is basically cowboys in space
Another great choice of things to watch. You got me along for the ride on yet another series!
*Browncoat screaming* It's finally here!
Yes!!!!!! Mad late but better late than never 😂
Thank you! I loved this. You are very observant and perceptive and that will make watching your reaction to Firefly very enjoyable for me. Not many connect the dots and see that Mal lost his religous faith because of the war. I'm heading over to join your Patreon so I can follow your complete Firefly journey. It's my most favorite TV series ever.
Hey!! Thank you for the super chat I didn’t even know you can do that with comments! If you need help finding things there let me know, I have all the full lengths available, and I’m having them edited down weekly!
There are episodes where river will say some things that seem random but there is a deeper meaning. You just got to catch it. This will be a fun ride for you , and the movie is also great.
Yup. And the depth and randomness makes this show SO rewatchable.
For story world context:
Think of the "outer planets" as the territories after the Civil War.
1:44 that's Mal in the corner. that's Mal in the spot. light. losing his religion...
“Sin..and hellfire. Oo-one has lepers!”
Loved your reaction. I've been a fan of Firefly for a long time. You're starting an incredible journey. So also gained a subsciber. Love from Montreal!
5:30 This is the situation where you HOLD A THERMAL DETONATOR in your hand ...
Welcome to the Browncoats!
Welcome to Firefly one of the most beloved set of 13 episodes by the most loyal fan-bases in the history of television. Nia, with this react and with every comment its so clear, you are well on your way to becoming a true 'browncoat.' It's going to be 'Shiney."
This show is so great that I did not watch its last episode - I just didn´t want it to be over 😍
I can relate this this so much!! If I wasn’t doing RUclips I wouldn’t finish so many shoes, some of it for that exact reason
The first time I watched it I somehow missed the episode Janestown and a couple months later found out about it and that feeling of having more is indescribable. It's literally my personal favorite episode too.
We saved the last episode until the night before the movie was released.
me as well
It's not like it was the last show, wrapping everything up, saying goodbye to all their viewers after several seasons. So you might as well watch it and it is certainly worth it.
You're watching Firefly? Is this Christmas?
About 4 episodes in you'll start lamenting that there's only one season! Fortunately, there's a movie to cap the story line.
Just remember that this is a Joss Whedon series, with all that that entails.
Looking forward to your reaction on the other episodes. Love this series! :)
I’ll try to stay consistent with Friday drops!
My favorite TV series ever. I watched it when it first came out in 2002. Really glad to be on this journey as you experience Firefly for the first time. Mal is definitely my favorite character and Kaylee is my second favorite. Can't wait to see your reaction to the movie once you finish the series.
So excited you are starting this!
YESSSSSS, let’s GOOOOO!!!! Hi from long ago 😂
I'm going to love your reactions to this series and movie!💜
Welcome to the Browncoats! You'll love it!
Mighty fine shindig!
Why do i start seeing Firefly content on RUclips on the same day i decided to start watching it on Disney+??👀🤔
Because there is a large hidden firefly world out there. You just opened the door. Bask in it.
Yeah, Jayne is a wild card . . . . a brawler, mercenary and a good shot. You'll hopefully grow to love the whole crew♥
I surely can tell: you will love this show :)
God, this show just gets better with time. Joss Weadon can freakin' write. You can cancel the man but not the work. Or quality. The cast is top tier. Only thirteen hour episodes, but if you look at them cinematically, we got a trilogy of films that are all masterpieces. Thank you for giving us a chance to see this great show through new eyes again.
oh here weee goo
😁!!!
Another future browncoat is about to be born! Shiny. And yes, you will need cry proof make up. Sometimes sad, sometimes tears of laughter.
This is such a great show that I automatically watch any reactor that starts it. Welcome to the family, it doesn't take long to get sucked in and feel like you've been here all along.
New subscriber here. Love this series. Loved your reaction, I look forward to see the rest of this series and will be checking out your other reactions in the meantime. 😊
I love this show!!
I had a real hearty chuckle when you thought that Kaylee was dead 😅
I went from oh this is a fun show to… oh this is that type of show?? Lol
@@NiaMakiReacts It's definitely unique with the space-cowboy mix of genres that it has going along with Joss Whedon's signature humour. In just one season each character becomes a beloved one which helped to make this a cult classic so many years later. Enjoy!
@@JeanParisot every character, but especially the Hero of Canton
@@jordanpeterson5140 **raises my cup of mudder's milk**
I be wishing I could react to stuff like this....but I done already watched it lol so awesome seeing your wonder as always my padawan ☺️
Joss would tell them the show is called FIREFLY not Mal or Kaylee or Zoey; no one is safe!
😭
Haven't watched this yet, never seen your channel before, but a new firefly reactor always gets a follow! 👍🏻
the theme song for the show was actually written by showrunner Joss Whedon.
So happy you are reacting to this one!!
Shiney.
Excellent reaction! You picked up on a lot of things that most people don't this early. I also liked how much you laughed at one of my favorite lines: When Simon asks (about Jayne), "What do you pay him for?" and Mal answers, "Public relations." The funniest thing about this is that there's a (twisted) sense in which it's true.
just subbed to follow your firefly journey. going by this one, it's going to be fun.
You're going to love this show - and the movie that comes after. And the crew will grow on you, including Jayne Cobb. I really enjoy your reaction to this, and I'm looking forward to seeing you go through the rest of the series. I'm subscribing so I can keep watching.
Awesome. Ill be here for every episode!
No spoilers, obviously. Methinks you'll have a fabulous time with the show. 😁
thank you thank you!
After completing the series and the movie, I hope you didn't skip the audio commentaries. A worthy listening.
Oh you will need that waterproof eyeliner . . .
Second of all . . . I am one of those fans that think that it was a great series and had a lot more it could have grown into 😞
Awesome reaction and post commentary. I just found your channel from this and subscribed. I know you're going to love it!
This show is just so good. Welcome! You'll make a great Browncoat!
