Thank you! I'm 66, was taught to sew by my grandmother, and never knew about the red ball. You should continue making instructional videos because you are a natural! Well done!
Thank you for this video!! I am 67 years old and have been sewing most of my life and have never seen what that little red ball was for! 😂. I think you just made my life easier.
I've been sewing since I was 7 and I never knew what that ball was for either. Thanks! I like the technique at 9:21, I use that when I'm pulling out top stitching. I leave the long tail, though, use the tail to pull the loop through and tie the two threads in a knot by hand. That way I have a neat and secure stitch with out back stitching. (kind of hard to explain without a visual)
You should make more videos as you really seem (seam) to know what you are doing. Close up shots, clear and slow speaking, easy to follow directions, cover all the important points. Great job presenting.
Great tutorial! Interestingly enough, my junior high school home economics teacher showed the class this technique and those of us who were actually paying attention have used it for many decades. Here I was taking this skill for granted. Smh at myself. Btw, you really should make more videos. You are a natural teacher. Be safe/blessed.
Ninja you are! I just bought a new sewing machine after not having time to sew for many years (probably decades), so of course I have to get tools. Researching the best seam rippers, I came across your video. I learned sewing in home ec and you just taught me at least 4 things. I love how you teach and your video was terrific and everything was easy to follow. Thank you!
OMG!!! YOU are super smart and super fantastic!!!! I have been sewing for over 35 years and never knew about the red ball. Excellent tutorial you presented well. Thank you for sharing such an informative video. GOD bless you and your family.
Oh my goodness! I never knew what the red ball was for...thanks for letting me know. I've never even looked on the package to see whether there are instructions about the red ball. I just used the seam ripper the way it made sense to me. From now on, I'll have two methods of seam ripping! Thanks again. Diane in NC
I 'm ashamed to say, I think I"ve had my blue seam ripper for about 30 yrs! That red ball technique! OH MY GOSH, THAT IS GENIUS! Thank you so much for telling us what it's used for!
You can still keep it around for Old Time sake. You can even use it as a stiletto or point Turner. But I think it's ready to retire as a seam ripper. Lol. Happy sewing
I saw the preview about the little red ball and decided to watch. I've been sewing since I was about 12 years old -- which was ... well, let's just say decades ago. I learned all the techniques you showed by trial and error. This is a great video for people getting started who haven't had a lot of experience with seam rippers! I will continue to watch your videos because I've learned that, no matter how long a person has been sewing, there are still things to learn!
Very well done. Thank you. For those little threads. I use blue painters tape folded back on itself so I can roll the sticky cylinder along and pick up threads. Refresh and roll up more threads.
Seam rippers can be sharpened, by the way. But yes, I'd probably buy a thirty-pack if I sewed a lot. Seam rippers also seem to be able to walk away from where I am *absolutely sure* I was last using them. :-)
Thank you. Great video! Skip to 7:00 if you have ever had a seam ripper, imho. By chance, have you ever used this to remove Patagonia garment tags or other brand tags?
Like the comment below mine, I'm 71 and never knew what the ball was for and have NEVER used the seam ripper with the ball between the fabric like you did and yes I have made many holes because of it. And they say you can't teach an old dog new tricks. lol Better late than never I guess!
All the years I have been sewing and yes using a seam ripper I didn't think about the red ball. I think I was always using the long pointed end. I've never tried the last quickest method. Do you have a favorite seam ripper?
I choose to use the most generic boring seam ripper most of the time. That's because they're inexpensive, so I don't feel bad switching to a new one that is sharp. That being said they're not my favorite. I really like the ones that fold and are kind of square-shaped. I also sometimes use the thicker ones if my carpal tunnel is flaring up.
I tried to encourage sewers to take advantage of the little red ball, but all I got was, "Students get confused". Well, I will just have to steer them to YOUR channel and this video, right, Alice? 😊
The Fabric Ninja My sister came home from the store yesterday. "Here!" she said. "I got you something!" It was the seam ripper with the grip handle! No, she does not sew like I do, and she had no idea that I had viewed your video, yet she bought me a new seam ripper.

thank you! It means a lot to hear that.

Thanks for watching. Happy sewing...and unsewing

Sherry Grable thanks for your comment. I’m 63 and have always wondered about that little red ball. 🥰

Th k you, love your voice. Maybe sand paper to resharpen seam ripper. Throwing it away seems a waste.😊
I don't throw them away. I use them to turn points, and eventually, they snap.

Thanks for sharing! I love stories like that.
Just found this video. I've been a garment sewist for 50+ years. Ahhhhh....the red ball....game changer! Thank you.
Glad I could help

Very well done. Thank you. For those little threads. I use blue painters tape folded back on itself so I can roll the sticky cylinder along and pick up threads. Refresh and roll up more threads.
Thank you. Sometimes I use a sticky lint roller too.
I can't wait to try the red ball technique of seam-ripping! Who would've thought I'd look forward to having to rip out a seam! :)
Thank you for watching!
Great video. So that's what that little ball is for!!
Thanks for watching! Happy sewing

Just realized my seam ripper doesn't have a ball on the shorter side -- and it's 15 years old -- time to get a new one!
Thank you for this video.... it is well done, very informative and very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Wow! Super information, thank you!!!

Thank you for watching! I hope you send lots of people this way, so they can learn how easy sewing can be
