Gibson just released an email on the new 57 classic pickups . You'd think they could do a better job of hiding the wiring. That's not a problem on my new Casino.
Never played a Gibson version. But I own a epiphone les paul Florentine, black with gold hardware with true F holes. Play it every single day, more than my other guitars!
Yes, they particularly made quite a few around 2013-14. Someone above mentions the Wildwood Benchmark series run above, but they were made more widely and more generally than just for Wildwood. I have a blue sparkle one with natural back and sides and true f-holes I bought new here in the UK.
Fender had the “Bantam Bass Amp” same size as a 4x10 Super Reverb Amp but no reverb, 15 inch speaker, and 30 watts instead of 40. The channels can be jumped as well unlike most Fenders. It’s my favorite amp.
@@taylorwerner384 yeah trapezoidal 15 inch that is not good for bass except at low volume but is awesome for guitar, similar to the original tweed Bassman.
Regarding the red sparkle paint on top. There are a lot of paints that require 2 stages to get the full effect. Normally black must be the base coat for the full effects to be seen. If white was used, it would end up being a muted pearled off white with dull red & white sparkles. There are a lot of car painting videos showing this off.
Also, the clear is awful. it should look like glass not orange peel. with the flake you really need to bury it in a lot of layers, the clear I did myself on my Harley looks better. but the red is awesome anyway, I'd still love it. 🏁
Junior Kimbrough had a lovely Frost Blue Florentine Custom. Had no idea what it was for the longest time. Not a lot of photos of it but there is a video from the Chicago Blues Festival in '95 of him playing it. Guess that would make it a Bantam. Wonder where it's at now, and if it was a custom color order.
When I see this type of finish on a guitar I automatically think back to the 70’s bands like the ‘Sweet’ ‘Mud’ and ‘Slade.’ All you needed together with the guitar was a pair of stack heeled knee length boots…..that gives an idea of my age!
Exactly. It's really not that difficult to put the old part(s) in the packaging of the new and put it in the case or another safe spot somehow linked to the original guitar. I do this even when the part is slightly damaged or old. This stuff means alot to more people than you would think. I know Austin would appreciate *anything* original to a guitar.
Absolutely right. Heck, if I'm forced to replace a part (broken, corroded, etc.), I even keep the nonfunctioning part with the guitar. If I sell the guitar in the future, I want people to see the reason for possible replacement parts.
I thought ' florentine ' was a pasta dish or some kind of pasta sauce ....? Cool guitar ,its also cool how the diamond style f-holes go with the inlay on the head stock...though I prefer the actual f-holes ....Thanks Trog !
Austin, This example sounded excellent...even with RUclips’s compression. It’s one of the best sounding guitars that I’ve heard on your channel, period. This is an intriguing series of guitars, and it’s certainly worth further/deeper exploration.
I was expecting to love these pickups when you went to high gain… slap a Mister Yuck sticker on them… yuck. But the guitar itself. Awesome. But I’d want 57’s back in it
I understand your desire for originality and all, but as expensive as these things are, one of the best way to prevent serious dings and broken head-stocks is a good set of strap-locks. Maybe put the original style into a zip-lock and toss them in with the case candy.
@@cataclysmicconverter You would think so, but I still can't imagine calmly standing in the studio with a $5000 guitar hanging around my neck with nothing more than weak holes in leather between me and disaster. My point is a big ding or a broken head-stock is going to devalue the guitar way more than some locking strap buttons.
The dude from the darkness (justin hawkins) played one live that was that kahki/gold color that the dave grohl's 335 comes in with sparkles and the trini Lopez diamond f holes!
Diamond Sound Holes, not F Holes. Id like to see that finish on a regular LP Custom, with much better pickups installed. I personally don't like any humbuckers with Alnico V magnets
Trogly, I like the surprise moment when you unveil the pickups, but I don’t get it. At the price point that you purchase most of your instruments, aren’t sellers willing to take a peek and confirm what pickups are being offered?
I really feel for you when you start finding non original parts on an older guitar. I can hear in the tone of your voice, the let down of it. I'm glad there's folks like you out there that really care enough about this kind of thing! Chin up Austin!
I am the original owner. The original pickups were kept - and offered up to you after I got hosed from my 'first right of refusal' buddy sold it without my knowledge. He buys and sells often and I was sure she would come home after trading it on a different deal. I gave him the pickups after the $800 whack from your deal - So that he could decide to sell them to you or someone else. I also asked to buy it back from you - it would have been great had you worked with me - but alas, lesson learned. The bridge is NOT original - it was not a lightweight aluminum - I put that one on.. Knobs were original - its what Gibby put on it.
Love this Guit...sounds awesome with those PU's...but...call me Mad 😅 I'ld add more clearcoat to the top to get rid of the 'orange peel'...( maybe sand the black of the back only to know how's mahogany looks like...😂😊🎸
My friend has a pink glitter heavy flake les paul custom shop florentine. Its literally been one of my dream guitars my whole life and he said hes going to be buried with it. Cant say that i blame him. Its just such a cool guitar, cool color, f holes. He bought it in the late 90’s. From what he has told me they only made 4 total in those flake colors, a green, silver, blue, and his pink one. If you wanted i could send a pic of it as i highly doubt you would ever see another one. I believe its the same as Noel Gallegers except its the pink one.
You should get a second one of the same color. That way you can click them together and say "There's no place like home, there's no place like home, there's no place like home."
Alright... I think I found a new dream Les Paul...I love Red Sparkle guitars, I love Les Pauls, and I love the Trini Lopez. Why did you have to show me this...
People went crzy about the bantem/florentine when they first came out - at least they did in Chicago area... ES LPs sound cool too, but they are more ES than Les Paul. There was a cool florentine without the f holes at the Chicago Guitar Center for a few weeks. It was too light for me and too expensive so I never considered them.
Neck pickup is inferior to a 57 Classic . Guitar looks pretty, but should get 57 Classic P'ups. I have them in my LP and they are good for all kinds, Jazz, Blues, Funk, Pop, Country ,Latin.
The Venetian cutaway on a Gibson archtop is much rounder than what you have on a Les Paul So the Les Paul horn is much pointier than a regular Venetian cutaway, it’s closer to a Florentine than. Venetian So it makes sense to me
Thank you but I’m a real old school Gibson guitar guy. I’ll pass on it. I watched Trini Lopez on TV when I was a kid. He did nothing special on guitar. Now Roy Clark, he was a real player. I’ve seen him use Fenders early but when he used Gibsons he was everything and a bag of chips too
He was amazing! Excellent banjo and fiddle player too! I always ad him to the guitar player conversations too!! Jerry Reed could blaze the fingerboard also. Among others.
I remember seeing Roy play on Hee-Haw back in the late 1970s (and maybe early 80s?) As a kid but couldn't appreciate it too much back then. But now looking him up on RUclips and seeing that old footage man he could really play!
Okay, first of all amazing and I would own one if I could. Second, am I crazy or is the endoscope showing plywood construction and not just routing foibles?
Just imagine if it was referring to the chicken instead of the prizefighter and Washburn still threatened them with litigation over the Bantam name. If I were on the Gibson staff, I would then have changed the name to "Galliform" instead of "Florentine."
That was a scary statement! Let's get the endoscope and see what's in there! My Doctor says that to me every 5 years or so! 😂 Thanks, Trogly! Love your shows!
The Florentine moniker is a bit confusing but the Diamond Sparkle is a gorgeous instrument. I'm cynical why people don't disclose changes like these pickups, seems a bit fraudulent. Especially, anyone who owns a Gibson guitar ought to know exactly what their parts are. Phillips drivers are not hard to use.
Is it just me or do those Lopez style F holes look poorly done? If they had added some binding or at least paid more attention to the edges, especially given Gibsons prices.

I bought one of those purple sparkle top Benchmark Gibson Florentine Les Pauls through Wildwood about a decade ago. I love it!

Didn’t they come with some styrofoam Yamaha speaker that was a weird shape and had a high failure rate?

Beautiful guitar that sounds amazing. I'd keep those pickups in it.

It amazes me how people don’t keep original parts with their guitar. Its not like you store anything else in the case compartment

Those pickups sound better than any classic 57's I've ever heard. Whoever swapped them out was on to something 🤔

Heavy metal flake needs more clear coat, block sanding and buffing for a show car finish. That is a beauty out in the sun.
