Speed in this game is weird. It's almost always either 2 or 200 (When holding B). That's why you can enter GBJ by pressing C up after letting go of the control stick. Toad will keep walking and won't ever stop to enter C up view. If you're facing a wall, that's most likely a reset.
I don't know if this helps but theres actually a trick to getting past the gate (Or brick) in the DS version. Basically in version 1.01 you can build up enough speed to launch yourself high up enough in the air to the point where it starts to despawn items. Alternatively since water is a layer in Mario 64 would getting out of bounds and then coming at the gate from below work?
there is like a lot of diffrences with ds and n64 version 1. you can't despawn items from sm64 by just going far away in any direction. 2. going oob (out of bounds) isn't possible. the game won't make you able to enter oob. there are still few ways to enter oob, but entering oob will kill mario instantly. 3. if you enter water from the bottom of the layer, you will instantly move to the top of the layer 4. the gate below is oob anyways so you can't enter there but you can enter vanish cap by having the right amount of speed in the right position with the perfect angle like pu movements would be able to do this or having crazy amount of speed in the right place or go pass the gate with high y speed using like wing cap and flying downwards or having mario with very high negative spd and jump so he gets high y speed making him jump into the vanish cap instantly

Yeah. Pressing B just zooms Toad forward.
