I was on the Material Fielding Team for the Army's CUCV in 1984-1986. I still have all the Chevrolet TDP's as well as the Manuals for the "D" Trucks. It tickles me that all the people on RUclips profess to be CUCV experts and were not even born when the vehicle came about..
I'm installing the Dog Head Starter Relay on my Truck now. I've an '86 M1009 I purchased 10 years ago, its been sitting in my garage since 2013 when the original starter relay stuck, it melted my starter! Count me as a new subscriber.
The only circuits that are 24V are the starter and that useless NATO plug. A 12V conversion is the most common sense thing to do right out of the box for its compatibility with the standard models of these trucks.
Thanks for the vid. I agree; Keeping the electrical system original is best. My M1010 that I am working on right now was butchered when I got it. I have spent a lot of time repairing electrical issues and plan to reharness the whole vehicle soon. Also working on the fueling system. Mine is getting air in the return line. Chasing that now.
You already have a nice truck! But grab a CUCV sooner rather than later, the value is only gonna go up. I insure my CUCVs with Hagerty and they are acknowledging the increase in value like never before.
I recommend get ready to run to napa for a basic fuel filter assembly. The original is hard to find parts for if not impossible. I replaced mine with napa stuff when the bleed screw wouldn't stop leaking and no problems. At least not yet. Removed the original and bolted the new back in its place. Also, how do you tell about the harmonic balancer being good or bad?
what would be your advised top speed to if going 2000 miles on the interstate? and what would be the Tell Tale Sign of a bad harmonic balancer and or cracked crankshaft? I thought the cranks were forged steel?
Would love to own one but the luxury of AC is very expensive. I wonder if anyone has retrofitted another AC/Heater out of like an import car because of the small footprint of them.
Nato 24V system will NOT charge battery if a Gen 1 or Gen 2 bulb in the dash burns out bc whole system including bulbs is wired in series!. Swap the bulbs in the dash when you get one or at least be aware why your battery isnt staying charged bc your alternators WILL NOT charge if one of the 2 bulbs are burnt! Steel Soldiers is your freind. Money is your freind aloong w patience. Be prepared to get $uper $pendy. These things are 40 years old. Have a network of people or mechanic(s) that arent scared of the crust and 6.2 IDI world. Got my zero rust CA Desert based 29 palms Marine 1008 5 years ago - she was wasting away (high altitude no humidity) on a sheep farm in NM. Got it back to Socal where it is smog exempt. Motor is a reman unknown hours but is almost leak free. The rancher dude who owned it did 12V conversion w civi cluster, manual glows already all lined out. I swapped to AGM Optima battery, spin on filter, '92+ Inline lift pump in frame and now starting is NOT a problem. Shes got a Banks Sidewinder from a donor truck I yanked out as of last month, Inj Pump is timed to proper advance now and is waaaay smoother and quieter at Idle. I just Resealed the front end of motor w Fresh Harmonic, seals, PS belt, New hydroboost lines(old ones leaking at 40 years) last year I did 700R4 w custom higher stall, advance adapters to the 208 TC and my trans shop (Art Carr down the street) did a CUSTOM kickdown bracket kit from Lokar instead of using the very hard to find factory brackets. its on ORD 4" lift w 1.5" forward 1" lift spring shims(~5" lift). PSC 2wd Box BRacked frame welded in, X-over steer, No sway bars on 38" Patagonias. She rolls down freeway 70-75 all day now. Hillbilly Wizard had some extra gun rack locks I put in that the last owner removed. These things are rewarding if you got the time/space/money/resources. Restored gauge cluster w $50 clear cover, $20 LED bulbs, Nice steering wheel $180, $70 Carrhart dash cover over the cracked pad, looks really decent inside. Its now a daily for my son in H.S. now. Its got onboard air w Vair/ARB parts for barge horns and tire inflation. LMC has taiwan vent windows $180 each easy to swap compared to trying to rebuild crusty o.g.'s. Im 5 years in - next up is seat/visors from USA1 and next year shes gettin ADS Coil over setup and CARC Respray/straightening. Save em!
Hey brother - I plan on getting one someday and was wondering if you had any knowledge of putting AC in one. Either all civvy GM or Vintage Air - any recommendations?
Recently bought an M1009 and saw your video. Great information and glad I came across your video before daily driving it. I went ahead and picked up some glow plugs from Kennedy Diesel and when I received them they have Wellman engrave on them. I went ahead and took another view at your video to make sure I hadn’t misheard something. I’m not sure if I ordered them from the wrong Kennedy or what happened but thought I’d pass on the information.
y'all know you're making a video, right? You know, where you show the truck and the parts you're talking about? See, just staring at your beard for 6 minutes ain't exactly interesting.

Most people that don’t like Detroits don’t know them.

I restored a M1008. Money pit
I have 3 of these trucks on my property. Just got the key for them and am going to start them for the first time in 10 + years. Any advice?
Sale me one
Make sure your batteries are in top condition and good glow plugs.
One key should start all of them I believe. Unless someone changed them out like I did.

Guy on RUclips put ac on it slams kept both alternators to
Thank you for your honesty. Keep up the good work brother
@CherokeeRonnie. Are the injector pumps on the M1008 and M1009 mechanical or electronic? Please let me know. Many thanks!!! :):)

Put a 1 wire single alternator in it, wire batteries in 6:13 parallel, put a 12 volt starter in it. F that 24 volt
Do you have the part number for this solenoid to make the mod for the starter? TIA!
