She was finally sold to the final family, they were Whyte and they treated her with respect and all of the others there. They were given an education, they were paid a salary, every 7th year they were there they got to do whatever they wanted to do. Anyway, she told us that she figured out that it's not the color of your skin, or your ethnicity. She told us that we're not African Americans, we weren't born in Africa. So, to quit using words we don't know what they mean. She told us there are only 2 races on this planet, us- humans, and the angels, both the fallen and unfallen ones. To be truly considered an African American, you need to be born in Africa and have a dual citizenship with America. She told us that every ethnicity has had braids and that we need to realize that we all originally started in Africa, so we are all related in some way or another. No is better than the other, no matter how much money they have in the bank. Money, personal property, are all things that can be taken away through all sorts of ways. So to stop placing so much importance on these things. That she knew that she could die any day soon. She said if you fail in something to keep going just set back and figure out what YOU did to fail, always remember to learn everything, sometimes you might learn something that you don't agree with, that's okay. At least you learned it. Not everyone is going to like you for whatever reason, okay, move on. Learn from each other's cultures, and embrace them respectfully. Learn different languages, trust in God over everything and everyone. Racism is the devil's tool to separate us. If we fall into his trap, then we're no different than him. Yes, you're going to meet idiots who don't love God with all of their being; and it will be proven by how they treat other people, especially if the others don't look like them or have the same or more money than they do. She died the very next year. But she always tried to get us to understand where she was coming from. I was in my 30s in the military before it finally came to my understanding of what she was talking about. So, I worked on changing my view of others and not to assume that just because one idiot or a group of them treats me a certain way, that doesn't mean that others that look like those idiots or have the same belief system. I'm in my 60s now and I made sure my son understood this and he is 40 now and he tries to explain to others

I’ve come up against it a couple of times once at my Ivy League University from a black professor who almost failed me because I am white, from a young black waitress in Louisiana who refused to wait on me, and from a black co-worker. In all honesty in each situation, I was completely baffled. Call it my naivety. Fortunately, in the last incident another coworker came to my defense. She was another black coworker, my best friend, and afterward, we walked out the door together to go to lunch. Helen was just as your grandmother described. Maybe, who knows for sure, my thoughts might’ve been different if it were not for her. Just like you with your grandmother, she will always have a place in my heart as someone dear and special. Just a thought: I was born and raised in Philadelphia and received almost all of my education there. I’ve seen Kensington and although it was never considered a good place to be when I was growing up, it was not as bad as it is today. However, I now live halfway across the country, and have for about 30 years. I work with 15 emergency rooms and sadly can tell what drug came into town that week. I’ve learned so much from my patients, and continue to do my best to look at each one of them as someone who deserves my best professional self. I think it was seeing the more difficult life around me as I grew up, that has given me the compassion that I need to do my job well each day, even though I did not grow up in such a neighborhood personally. Even the lowest of the low as the world perceives them have a significant purpose, but this doesn’t stop others from trying to raise them up.
