- www.ted.com How do you stage an international art show with work from 100 different artists? If you're Shea Hembrey, you invent all of the artists and artwork yourself -- from large-scale outdoor installations to tiny paintings drawn with a single-haired brush. Watch this funny, mind-bending talk to see the explosion of creativity and diversity of skills a single artist is capable of.
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at www.ted.com/tra....
I personally believe that most of them would stand well on their own. Some of these works are just phenomenal feats such as that mirror pool. A lot of what good art is, has to do with the process, and this man has brilliantly taken process to the extreme. He didn't just create art, but also the artist.
I think it's fair to say he's being ironic about a lot of the artists and techniques he's made up, even to the point of mocking the art scene. That's why the audience are laughing. Plus, they're laughing because the range of stuff he's created is surprising and impressive. To be fair, if anyone's produced art seriously before, making a range of random stuff is the starting point, the easy bit... The difficulty is in developing your style and concepts so your pieces aren't just silly one-liners.
GORMLESSwonder
It's also a commentary on society, as with the barbed wire warning.
I could listen to and watch this guy for hours. He's fascinating. What a round-about approach to creativity. Can't get enough.
What I like about this talk is that it opens my imagination up to various ways of defining what art is, what it means to someone, and how it may be expressed. I keep thinking maybe I could take one of these concepts, or something equally unique, and make a statement about my own life. It would surely never impress anyone else, but maybe it could have meaning for me. Art is like dancing. You don't have to do it to be impressive. Sometimes you just need to do it.
I could see the cultural differences, but did everyone else notice the earthy upbringing of his Arkansas experience trickle through the many personas of his imaginative and engrossing artists? The way he played with earth, browns, shading, boots, seasons, nests, all of which put together wouldn't have been thought of necessarily through the eyes of, let's say, a Swiss woman. Beautiful, creative art.
that was truly one of the best ted talks i've ever seen. he's quite amazing!
He became 100 artists in 2 years... amazing. In 29 years, I haven't even become 1!
A modern Leonardi da Vinci. No less! He has a amazingly broad pallet of technique and imagination, and then the energy and imagination to realise and then promote his ideas. A true inspiration to creative artists in all fields.
How have I not heard of this man! Oh wait maybe because he made up his different selves! Gold!
I loved the imagination and creative ideas this fellow went with. This is what happens when you don't turn off your childhoods open minded wondering. Love it and it's how I do my comedy music and stand up.
All I could think was: Hubris. But the laughter of the audience told more about this work than anything else.
This guy belongs in art, so damn creative!
Insanely cool that he managed to make one artwork and artist per week for two whole years... talk about commitment and a wildly creative mind!
am i watching the same talk as these people?? theyre goin hysterical at everythin!
still one of my favourite talks
I didn't think I would like this talk, but this is EPIC.
See how easy it is to create art(ists)?
You just have to know how to "sell" it.
I worked on a contemporary museum for 5 years, and this was some of the best work I've seen - thanks TED.
Now he'd make for a very interesting dinner guest...at least 100 times.
The "Arts" module of my brain does not function. Will I ever be able to appreciate the kind of art he is presenting ?
This guy is what other artists SHOULD be. Really impressive.
His sardonic commentary on contemporary art reflects my feelings as well.
@Stereozucker It's called upspeak. Quite prevalent in Australia apparently. People who use it are said to be less sure of themselves and are seeking confirmation of what they're saying.
An artist is many things, and what better way to see them all then through many artists!
Inspiring!
i was skeptical at first but he won me right over. very cool, very funny.
Song Dong did that breathing thing in the 90's.
This was absolutely brilliant!
Man I come up with crazy stuff all the time with my friend. So reassuring to actually realize the implications they could have...
@mikesomething You're mistaken I'm afraid. Biannual means something that it occurs twice a year and biennial means, as I stated previously, something that occurs once every two years or, if you prefer to word it that way, something that lasts for two years. Might want to Google it if you're unsure.
This person is amazing.
This man... is a genius.
I can't love this enough.
I always scoff in my mind when i hear about art stuff, Then somehow I usually end up enthralled like I was with this video.
@mikesomething
He said Biennial. 02:38
Definition: "Biennial means (an event) lasting for two years or occurring every two years"
Brilliant... thoroughly enjoyed this!! Reminds me a little of David Arquette. Great job, Shea!!
Wow! He is very talented, we you look at some of these designs.
hello ap art
Astonishing creativity! :O
Oi! Where's tha link for this guy's website!?
@wenliliu2008 Yup. Anything can be art if you spin it enough, but if requires no skill or years of practice and education, I don't fall for it, lol. They're just slaps in the faces of real artists who put hard work into it.
This guy is awesome.
Leaning back in my chair, four hours into this evenings lazy stint and idly clicking away at you tube videos... I'm thinking: This guy has way too much energy.
Sometimes I hate driven people.
OK that's it, where do i buy a TED ticket?
this guy makes it a total shoe in for ANYONE to be a TED TALKER?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!
It would of been more interesting if he had of contacted 100 artists to make art that you can explain to your grandmother in 5 minutes rather than his "ideas" of what 100 artists could make. The fact would probably of been more interesting than the fiction.
@Willayam91 Some of those artists had several artworks. So one artist and one artwork minimum! That's incredible!
Love the barbwire works.... lol
Brilliantly creative!
But does the simulation of an artist leads to art?
I love this!!!
Wow! What a prolific imagination! :D
honestly your right, it was unfair to compare him to an artist who lived in a different time, I apoplogize. Im not an internet troll who his just trying to be an ass, but say compare him to paul mccarthy, or joseph beuys, I could still argue that depth exists in their work, while his is so entirely dependent on an idea that in the end that simply is not that brilliant.
GENIUS!
Sweet! This made me week!
LOL knew just how much to cock the gun to shoot the fly without damaging what was under it. Now I have to say wow to anyone who can shoot a fly off the wall from two rooms away and not put a hole in the wall!
This is an amazing Artist!
Haha, these guys are great!
i don't usualy care about art, but that was rather neat ^.^
So clever... (unlike some of the comments here!)
I LOVE this!
@Charles33333
Because he made all those pieces of art, and made different characters who created those pieces... Watch the first couple of minutes again lol
Because posting negative comments on youtube is an art, just sayin'
I liked the art and the explenation (in lack of a better word; English is not my first language) from the point of view of a fellow artist, but I have to say that your presentation was a bit clumsely made in that you hastened a bit to much, If you are to do something like this in the future I would sugest that you pace yourself, It was a bit hard too keep up ;)
So, this guy made a schizophrenia-like art collection of 100 personalities... Gotta give him creds for a great and orignial (as far as i can tell) concept.
omg i love the nests photos! ahhahahaha awesome.
@axelasdf you mean attention span=10minutes?
@sirspiff yeah 13:58 is so amazing
Love it!
amazing!
Joy!
Where does he find the time?? Half of these look like 6 month - year long projects.
@ravellwolf i know that^^ i was in the us once and all the girls there were speaking that way^^ i thought it was annoying.. its like those high pitched voices and than this upspeak thingy^^ well i think thats something you should never do at a presentation... well at last i learned that at school.
good!
Hahahaha adventures with skinny
@mikesomething
I was merely confirming it.
@aaaaaaaaooooooo He says, 'biennial', which means something that occurs every two years.
Wow!!
Brilliant!(2)
cool artist
My sister and I.
tru dat, why cant more people realise this
Kenneth from 30 Rock! Glad to see he's keeping busy during the hiatus.
Genial!
So mad! I a in love!
Forever Alone...jk this is actually a pretty interesting idea.
I loved watching this. If you enjoy creating you might like it too... :)
Very true, his work predominantly lacks a depth because of his whole process of changing from idea to idea instead of really stopping and honing on a concept. For someone like him i try not to view the 100 pieces as individual works, but all 100 as a whole. I think thats really the way to view him as an artist, other wards yes i would agree with his lacking depth from piece to piece.
MEDBTT14 "idk I just FEEL like the pieces lack depth"
This is when schizoprenia comes in handy
the laughing ruins it so badly.....
@JLCTushingham ...really creative squirrels then... :)
Comparing a contemporary artist to Da Vinci is like comparing a modern day engineer to Tesla. Two different worlds my friend, The introduction of conceptual art made it inaccurate to compare post-conceptual artists to pre-conceptual. I honestly like them both and dont care what your tastes are, but comparing contemporary artists to Da Vinci makes you seem like you are ignorant and know nothing about it.
What is that word? "bioniel?"
I can shoot flies with my bb gun... don't know what is so impossible about that : P
@JohnTheFaun wait, what? Was he? lol.
Never say "This isn't photoshopped". Huge mistake. Not that big of a deal, it wasn't photoshopped, but that's the kind of thing to say to invoke skepticism.
Still awesome talk. That just bothered me.
@TimmacTR it's called dissociative personality disorder.
Wow
hemberly
Awsome
I dont get this.
@hodor I think this might be a gay guy thing. I've got a gay friend who talks exactly like that, and this guy is clearly gay too.
This is the opposite of quality vs quantity....
