I've always thought if all children were really taught and learned the book of Proverbs, what a wonderful world it could be. Proverbs is awesome. Love it.

Rabbi Tovia single handedly demolishes the core tenets of Christianity. Christianity is many things but it is clearly not in line with pure monotheism aka Islam, Judaism.

Rabbi you are teacher of God and Children bring joy. A teacher who cannot explain any abstract subject to a child does not himself thoroughly understand his subject; if he does not attempt to break down his knowledge to fit the child's mind, he does not understand teaching.
So I don’t believe in the theory of original sin, I would still like to know what it means (The Metsudah Linear Translation) “Behold, in iniquity I was formed, and in sin did my mother conceive me.” So my mother was in sin. Why? Presumably David wasn’t a mumzer, so what does this mean?
CarolAnn D; this part of Psalms 51 is about forgiveness of sins. I will be using the Chabad translation. Psalms 51:3-6 “3 Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your kindness; according to Your great mercies, erase my transgressions 4 Wash me thoroughly of my iniquity, and purify me of my sin. 5 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. 6 Against You alone have I sinned, and I have done what is evil in Your sight, in order that You be justified in Your conduct, and right in Your judgment.” * David goes into detail about the ever present reality of him falling into sin due to his own actions. David is also asking God to purify him of his sin. - The Psalms apply to all humanity and in this situation what David is saying is that all people sin due to their choices. - Therefore all people should ask God for the forgiveness of sin. * Now to psalms 51:7; "7 Behold, with iniquity I was formed, and with sin my mother conceived me.” * The conception of a human being is due to the actions of a man and a woman. Since David has said that he and all humanity commit sins, his parents must have sinned. All our parents have sinned. And the moment of conception involved the actions of a man and a woman who had previously sinned. * Again, David is saying that all people have committed sins (including parents) through their actions and that God can forgive sins. (My reference is this part of Rashi’s his commentary about David's intention in writing this verse; “The main part of my creation is from a male and a female, both of whom are full of iniquity.”)
CarolAnn D; you wrote "the theory of original sin" and someone questioned that. I will give you my thoughts on this. * In the Garden of Eden, since Adam and Eve were the original humans, they also did the original actions. - There are two possible types of actions; sin and obedience to God. - A. Sin, which applies to Genesis as defined in Britannica; “Sin is regarded ... as the deliberate and purposeful violation of the will of God.” - B. And the opposite of sin (in Genesis) which involves obedience to the will of God (“way of the Lord”) which is also described as doing what is right; * Examples in Genesis of obeying God, following God's will, doing what is right / the way of the Lord. - Such as Genesis 12:1 & 4, where God ordered Abraham to move. (NET translation) 1. Now the Lord said[a] to Abram,[b] “Go out[c] from your country, your relatives, and your father’s household to the land that I will show you.[d]... 4. So Abram left,[l] just as the Lord had told him to do...” - And in Genesis 18:19 which involves God talking about Abraham (NIV translation); “19 ...he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right...” * I will apply these ideas of right and wrong/sin, obedience and disobedience to God to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. - A. Obedience to God; (Chabad translation) - Genesis 2:19-20; “19 And the Lord God formed from the earth every beast of the field and every fowl of the heavens, and He brought [it] to man to see what he would call it, and whatever the man called each living thing, that was its name. 20 And man named all the cattle and the fowl of the heavens and all the beasts of the field,... - As with Abraham moving, Adam did as God requested. He named the animals. Adam obeyed the Lord. - Genesis 2:22-24 (NIV translation); “22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[h] he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” 24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. - Adam and Eve by becoming united as husband and wife, they established the practice of marriage which follows the way of the Lord. It is obedience to God and doing what is right. - B. Sin; the story of the violation of the will of God by Adam and Eve by eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is of course very well known. * What is established here is that Adam and Eve had both obedience and disobedience to God, they followed the will of God and violated the will of God, they kept the way of the Lord by doing what is right and they sinned. - There is an original sin. - There is also original obedience to God. * What does that mean? - Adam and Eve had free will. They had the ability to choose what is right and the ability to choose what is wrong. All of humanity (if they are capable) has been given that ability. * Humanity does not share the original sin of Adam and Eve. (Ambrose) - Free will is not weakened because of the original sin of Adam and Eve. (Augustine) - Free will is not destroyed by the original sin of Adam and Eve. (Luther and Calvin) * Again, the story of Adam and Eve is about the original human free will which all of humanity shares with them.
bb1111116 Right. Agreed. Though I have seen references - please forgive me for I cannot remember where - in rabbinic literature that something changed before and after this incident. Though the analogy to Lech Lecha is one I would agree with. I suspect that there is much more complexity in rabbinic thought about this story, though I certainly don’t believe in the Christian idea that without some sort of blood atonement everyone is doomed to eternal hell. (I was responding somewhat sarcastically to the person who said it wasn’t just a concept). While I can’t really claim to understand anything about H’, we know something about Him from His attributes. I cannot believe He’s a Big Meany who’d doom people to eternal hell for such a reason. Except maybe Hillary Clinton, Obama and the gang....😊
There's always a problem when people take the language of mythology and apply it literally. Christians also understand psychology. These days they think of "original sin" as human behaviour that will be considered sinful, psychopathic behaviour in the adult. But necessary for survival in the infant. If infants didn't demand attention, they'd likely die. This observation was applied as mythology. Especially by a man that didn't have children of his own.
I am trying to convert and I found out it can take years due to Israel and many other things. Why is it being made so hard to do? I can't understand it breaks my heart and discouraging. I have no words.
Children are not wicked but lacking in not only intellectual pre-requisite, but also lacking an emotional pre-requisite (more important when specifically referring to emotional states).
Thanks for the this commentary. I love learning and reinforcing my own intuitions from Rabbinic theologians. I often go to the Torah to get a better grasp although I consider myself a Christian as I believe the birth of the first earthly messiah has already occurred and I believe in the New Testament. I do feel however that many Christians seemingly lack the deeper understandings only really found in Judaism at this point.
The nature of the child is the Yetzer HaRa, and according to rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto, the Yetzer Ha Ra was magnified in man after Adam sinned. The teaching of the magnified evil inclination is the Jewish equivalent of the Christian doctrine of "original sin".

It is human nature to fear what one doesn't know. It is of a G-dly nature to trust without having complete undeniable truth. There is a strange connection between "not seeing and believing" and how the act of seeing changes the particle/wave state of matter.
for me, I think that people see but cannot believe due to many factors that influenced them as they grew. Fear is a very volatile emotion, one that a person must overcome before they can take a step into believing, not easy but can be done

I don't think I agree with Rabbi Tovia Singer on this. I don't think these verses are talking about the sins of a child. First off, sinful nature is just what we are many of us. We're greedy, selfish by nature not just because we're children but bc that's the animal instinct. And by "sins of your youth." I think its referring to the out of control sinning one does in their adolescents up to their mid 20's or even older. Older people don't seem to sin as much. They got it out of their system.
Ofcourse we don't know right from wrong as children. Original sin is not that, original sin is what Adam did by choosing the knowledge of good and evil and dealing with life on his own without Gods input. The conflict is we all enhirited Adam's condition where we do evil no matter how good of a good streak we have causing our failure to separate us from God. It is why the Father sent the Son reconsile us to Him. Being the punishment for sin is Death, God sent His Son to take the punishment of death so we live blameless to serve God.
The original translation, the Targum has more standing than the translation out of the King James Version. The Targum is the oldest translation of the Torah (Old Testament)
God, being omniscient, would have always known what would happen in the Garden. That leaves us with two possible conclusions: God intended to set humanity up to fall, or it's just a story intended to explain the human condition and our desire to reconnect with the divine. The latter doesn't necessitate a human sacrifice, and given that the former does, it would be a further indictment of God as a malevolent force, playing us all like puppets on a string for his own amusement. I'll go with the latter.

[Sukkah52a] the Torah says: *MEN* separately and *WOMEN* separately; then now that they are involved in the Celebration of the Drawing of the Water, and as such *THE EVIL INCLINATION DOMINATES THEM,* since celebration lends itself to levity, all the more so should *MEN* and *WOMEN* be separate. [Sukkah52a]
@Strava 89 - Yes this is similar to the christian concept of original sin. I'm Catholic, maybe you are talking about the Calvinist view that Rabbi Singer mentions quite a lot called, 'total depravity.'
You're simply explaining things without using the scriptures. Here you ignore the sin offerings at the temple, for the people, for the individual. These depicted the greater Lamb of God that would remove the sin from all who have faith by presenting his own sin-free life for our sakes. As the Law Covenant said, he who obeyed the law would live, he who disobeyed would die, be cursed. All died since all sinned. By the coming of the Messiah, the sin offering was provided: Isa 53:12 Darby Therefore will I assign him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong: because he hath poured out his soul unto death, and was reckoned with the transgressors; and he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Isa 53:5 Darby But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his stripes we are healed. From scripture, redemption is promised and is a must.
There is no original sin! We are not innately bad, but the opposite, we are innately good; but we have an ego that causes us to see ourselves separate, lacking and at odds with life and others; at odds with Love, so we behave badly. But we are not bad! We are mistaken, we misunderstand life. Everyone has an ego, and it is not of Love. The ego is also not evil, although it is behind all acts we would consider evil. The ego is not a thing or an entity, it's just programming to take care of number one. This programming causes us to be self-servicing, self-centered, fearful, distrusting, defensive and aggressive. The ego is a sense of self, not something real or true. A sense of self is nothing tangible, nothing that can't be fairly easily overlooked, if its lack of realness is pointed out. The ego is programming that causes us to see life, ourselves and others through a particular lense; one tainted by fear, judgment, limitation, smallness and a sense of lack. The egoic programming creates a sense of being under attack or threatened by others and by life. The ego is in fear much of the time, and therefore divorced from Love. This fear is an illusion, an imagination of something fearful in the future; not based on an actual threat in the here and now. When we're identified with this very primitive part of ourselves, we believe in the ego's fears and try to protect ourselves any way we can; usually by trying to attain more wealth, comfort, power, security, control, success, popularity and admiration; all things that make the ego safer, at least temporarily.
My friends, read the tanakh for yourselves and let the light of Yeshua shine to you through the torah, the prophets and scriptures. Yeshua is the way, truth and life. And the truth will set you free. God bless you
Let's go back to Genesis... Genesis 2:17 "... and of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou dost not eat of it, for in the day of thine eating of it-dying thou dost die.' Before their breaking of God's commandment Adam and Eve were naked yet were not ashamed... after they ate and gained the knowledge of good and evil they became aware of their nakedness and were ashamed. They lost their innocent standing before God. We are born into a similar state of innocence, but as we mature our ego and the natural desires lead to personal sin. We, as with Adam and Eve, become aware of our deficiencies, yet unlike Adam and Eve many have the temerity to believe a holy and righteous God can brush our sins to one side. In fact many get quite hostile in defence of their shallow view of Divine justice. Many believe God's justice can be 'swept under the carpet' upon their repentance. Not so... divine justice MUST be served, the penalty of sin is separation from God and unless payment is made justice is subverted.
Far be it from me to defend Paul, but he isn't the author of the doctrine of original sin. Paul used the Greek word "sarx" (flesh) and "pneuma" (spirit) to teach his Meshichist Noachides the concept of the Yezter HaRa (Evil Imagination) and the Yetzer HaTov (Good Imagination), which he also called "the old man" and "the new [man]," for reasons obvious to any Jew. Tertullian was the first to posit that sin was transmitted via procreation, which Paul didn't teach. It was Augustine who taught that the original sin was concupiscence and that it was transmitted to one's offspring during the act of procreation by the father's semen, which is why the Christians of his day had to come up with the doctrine of the Virgin Birth, because their version of "Jesus" had to be born without original sin, so he could be an unblemished sacrifice. This notion was later linked to Mary's Immaculate Conception to explain why Mary's father hadn't transmitted the original sin to her. Again, Paul was not the author of Pauline Christianity. That dubious honor goes to various proto-Gnostic schools of thought and the post-3rd century church fathers who redacted and reinterpreted Paul's writings to suit their own beliefs.
@Strava 89 - Paul was a Meshichist/Messianic. He advanced the notion that Yeshu was HaMashiach. The people Paul wanted to join his Messianic bandwagon were Noachides. Paul didn't want them to become Gerim Tzedek; ergo, Meshichist Noachides. This was the opinion of R. Jacob Emden after he read the so-called gospels and the writings of the apostles. What book did you read? I've read hundreds of books on Paul and more than a few about him written by Torah-observant Jewish scholars. Paul didn't think Yeshu was HaShem Himself or part of some 3-in-1 combination thereof. As late as c. 200 CE, Xtianis living in Rome scoffed at the notion that Yeshu was a deity or the Deity. Tertullian is the one who bought into several proto-Gnositic concepts and became the "father" of Latin Xtianity.
@Strava 89 - I shall acquire and read, "The Apostle Paul, Saul of Tarsus: The Bitter Root." Thank you! Why link Noachidism with early Xtianity? Probably because of R. Harvey Falk's book, "Jesus the Pharisee," which is a conspiracy book that claims Hillelite Hasidim created Xtianiy as a religion for the Gentiles, which, though well-argued, overlooks the fact that Yeshu was only interested in advancing a Baalei Teshuvah movement. Of course, the purpose of R. Falk's book is to write-off "Jesus" as being "something strictly for the Gentiles," which is understandable for an Orthodox Jewish author. No, I'm not saying Jews should embrace "Jesus." Heaven forbid! At any rate, R. Falk quotes R. Jacob Emden's letter on his read of the so-called gospels and the writings of the apostles and his conclusion that Xtianity was primarily a Noachide movement, before it fell into abject idolatry. Another reason people link Noachidism with early Xtianity is the lists of sins enumerated throughout the texts that prevent one from entering into HaShem's Rulership (Malchut Shamayim), which sound a lot like the categories of Noachide Laws or an expansion thereof. As for the antinomian current in Paul's writings, one should read Walter Schmithals' work, "Paul & the Gnostics" (et al), which demonstrate that Paul and James didn't have a falling out and that after the ruling in Acts 15, that told non-Jews to avoid the Three Cardinal Sins and go to the synagogues in the Diaspora for further instruction, Paul had various schools of proto-Gnostic thought following in his wake, which further confused his non-Jewish Meshichists, who knew nothing of proto-Rabbinic Judaism. Paul, per Acts 15, simply didn't want his non-Jewish Meshichists to become Gerim Tzedek let alone convert to the Law and Jewish observances as reenvisioned by the pre-Cerinthus proto-Gnostics; hence, the antinomian thrust of his corrective epistles. Other authors have touched on this, like E.P. Sanders and W.D. Davies. That latter's work, "Paul and Rabbinic Judaism: Some Rabbinic Elements in Pauline Theology," is a book that all Xtians should read, IMO, because it shows how the Church wrongly interprets Paul's use of Greek in his attempt to teach proto-Rabbinic concepts. I'm not saying Paul was a good Jew. Like Yeshu, Paul was simply a product of his training and culture. They might have been well-intentioned individuals, but their respective visions fell victim to the religious syncretism on the Common Era.
@Strava 89 - True, but there are sixty-six mitzvot that are applicable to all of mankind. There was no halakah at the time of Acts 15 stating that non-Jews could violate all sixty-six mitzvot if threatened with death if they didn't violate these mitzvot. So, the ruling of what I assume was this three-man Bet Din (of James, Peter, and John) was that, like the Jews, the non-Jews need ultimately only avoid the Three Cardinal sins with the inclusion of avoiding eating the meat of strangled animals, because that was linked with the practice of hepatoscopy, which was big with Emperor Claudius, who was a fan of this Etruscan form of divination which he actively promoted. We should also note that this was after the death of Shammai the Elder, but prior to Gamaliel I becoming the Rabban due to the inability of the Shammaites to find an Av Bet Din for the 71-man Religious Sanhedrin that they could agree upon and that was also acceptable to the Hillelites.
@Strava 89 - Yes, I totally agree with Dryden that Acts 15 does not allude to the seven categories of the Noachide Laws. I don't even understand why some people think they do.
We start with evil (selfish) inclination alone, and as we grow older we receive a good inclination. That's when the inner war starts, and that is when we first begin to be aware of the evil in us (because the good inclination joins and makes us aware of our dark side)
Whatever crime you committed you are not going to be punish because Jesus paid for it. So which means all Christians that commit sin isn't going to pay for it so why bother praying. All the sins are paid for.
Thank you for your videos. I do think you're a bit too harsh on Calvin. IF one believes Paul, Calvin's theological conclusions end precisely where they should and his arguments much more cogent than, for example, Arminius. Please don't be offended.....but it seems Judaism teaches that man is born sinless, but with an inclination "from his youth' to sin, i.e. fails to follow the 613. The notion of Calvin's double-predestination aside, If G-d is really omniscient and omnipotent, the difference between Arminianism and Judaism regarding man's nature seems a distinction without a difference. Somehow we need to explain the transition from the 'bara" (purity) of Hashem's creation in Gen 1.1 to where things ended up.
Rabbi, once again you seem to be overstating what Original Sin signifies. You and I both can agree that Adam and Eve were in a perfect state. Their disobedience brought forth sin. Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned-- this is also found in the Tanakh Ecclesiastes 7:20 Indeed, there is no one on earth who is righteous,(A) no one who does what is right and never sins.(B) - it is not that we are totally depraved in the sense that no man can do no good but we are involved with sin in our daily lives since the day of Adam and Eve we all deal with the Sin Nature Daily and we all will die for our own Sins Ezekiel 18. Therefore we need a Savior whom is divine in nature whom is Eternal whom is Everlasting. John 10:18 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one. (Eternal life is Granted through Christ Jesus the Messiah).
He told them to eat from the tree of knowledge because if he didnt do that all the people now would never even have been here. adam and eve would have been the only people on earth and immortal. there would be no need for children as people wouldnt age and people wouldnt die. people wouldnt need to eat drink etc. there wouldnt be any families and no way for people to be born on earth. so it was a blessing not a curse that they ate that apple. God never does mistakes and would trick people to eat a apple and punish them. So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth these verses come before he even made adam. it means it was preplanned they where meant to eat it so they could multiply. it wasnt a bad thing they ate from it as thats the only way they could multiply and have children. and the reason he told them to eat from that tree first was if they eat from the tree of life first people would never have been born except them 2. then that tree of life was protected because if any of there descendants get to it they could be immortals who cause chaos. once people know whats good and bad and then choose good they can eat from the tree of life. From such a simple thing he did it has people debating over if it’s 1 or 2 trees. Once they are righteous with God they will be able to solve the tree of life mystery. The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life. Those that work out that eating of the fruit of knowledge would then lead a person to be righteous could then see the tree of life. A non righteous person can’t see it. Or if Adam and Eve never ate from the tree of knowledge they can’t see the tree of life because they’re not righteous. U can’t have 1 without the other in this perfect plan of God. god created humans in his image by breathing life into them. Without that fruit they ate humans would never have had the knowledge of how to make other humans in their image and even know what life is. They would just have been 2 immortals not knowing what it is. From this plan of God there would come the wisdom of the righteous to see the tree of life. That’s why Gods not all angry and furious after they ate the fruit because he is wisdom and had a plan. He knows from that people will be debating and trying to work things out for thousands of years and knew they’d all be saying the snakes bad and to listen to him. And many trying to work out why it happened like that. those who claimed they had knowledge would claim people where meant to live forever like Adam and Eve without realising they wouldn’t even be their to think that if that was so, religions would debate and fight over it. he knew most would see it as a bad thing and focus on that while not seeing that he is all powerful all knowing and all good. Clouded with their own knowledge they cannot seeing that it’s his plan for u all to experience life instead of just 1 or 2 people. Millions of people for generations would be debating over if it was god the snake Adam or Eve to blame over what was a simple and easy to understand thing. God can create anything he wants. He made man in his image. He then gave humans the ability to create more humans in that image. Only by eating that tree could man have multiplied. When he said be fruitful and multiply it was because he was giving all u humans a obvious clue that if u eat the fruit u would multiply. If u didn’t eat the fruit none of u humans would even be here. It would have just been Adam if he chose. Or Adam and Eve. But he gave all u humans that gift to have children and families and experience this universe just how he envisions. So humans of earth no need to debate who was wrong in that situation. God is wisdom and has everything all happening for good reasons. It most certainly wasn’t a mistake they made or a curse. Humans shouldn’t use human judgement to try and link God up to any curse he does during creation in anyway way. When God made Adam and Eve he blessed them.
This is an utterly confusing answer..is Rabbi saying the passages refered yo are wrong because a child is not capable of good and bad morally?

Is it not interesting Jesus said; And said: Amen I say to you, unless you be converted, and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, he is the greater in the kingdom of heaven.
No. It's not interesting at all. I don't even know if he said that.

"Who is this who darkens counsel because of words without knowledge?" Job. 38:2 It is abundandly clear from Tanakh that Adam's sin not only transformed the world for Adam and his lineage but also transformed Adam's and his lineage's body, soul, and spirit. Why do we die? Why do we suffer? Why is the ground cursed? Why is there evil and untold suffering in the world? Is it not all because Adam SINNED? That’s why God says in Gen 6 that His spirit will no longer strive with man because man's thoughts and heart was continually evil. That’s why Jeremiah in 17:9 says that the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately sick! This is the basis of original sin! We're not sinners because we sin; we sin because we ARE sinners! Here are my questions for Tovia: do humans die because Adam sinned? Do humans sin because Adam sinned? Can any human stop themselves from sinning forever? If, despite all your efforts and best intentions, you still fall prey to sin does that not prove to you that there is a sin nature inherent to you that is forcing you to do that which you do not want to do?

Sorry Rabbi Singer but you are mistaken again...and it looks like you had to think about your answer bc when asked the question, your shirt is light blue, but when answering the question, your shirt is light purple...at any rate, Christian theology of man’s depravity is built on God’s truth alone and especially from the Torah and Tanach...here are a few more verses which you left out...Jesus in His teachings made the point that no matter how much you clean the outside of a man, in God’s eyes he is still dirty bc the problem is on the inside and in the heart and only God can cleanse that...we may appear outwardly righteous, but the evil thoughts that come from our hearts on the inside condemn us and that’s why Jesus came...His name Yeshua means “God is salvation” so God made it pretty obvious to us Who He is... “Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” Genesis 6:5 “The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; Who can understand it?” Jeremiah 17:9 (“sick” in Hebrew is “anash” which means “sick, frail, incurable, desperately wicked”) “When they sin against You (for there is no man who does not sin)...” 2 Chronicles 6:36 “All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him.” Isaiah 53:6 “This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one fate for all men. Furthermore, the hearts of the sons of men are full of evil and insanity is in their hearts throughout their lives. Tovia Singer Shalom Rabbi, Why Bible (New Testament) teaches Tawheed? John 1:18 μονογενὴς θεός? Monogenēs G-d. Monogenēs = היחיד (In Hebrew). Which is Wahid in Arabic. Tawheed is from Wahid.
Forewarning, sorry for the long post. I think the caller and the Rabbi have the Christian concept of "Original Sin" confused as a true literal since. This could be due to the fact that the Jewish culture typically has three tendencies that other faiths (like Christians and Muslims) can fall into which are: Traditionalism, Legalism, and Nationalism. Here we see a misinterpretation based on Traditionalism and Legalism. These two are heavily link with rabbinical teachings, which we need to remember that Rabbi's are not prophets (OT) nor are they apostles (NT) who received the their authority from God (i.e. regular men). At times Rabbis will insert their own legal interpretation into teachings on the text (legalism) and then teach it to many to the point that it could be grained into the minds of many who listened (traditionalism). The concept of "Original Sin" is that due to the fact that when Adam and Eve took the fruit of knowledge of good and evil, they disobeyed God's one and only rule and were cast out of Eden. Subsequently, Adam and Eve now will return to the dirt from which God made them (i.e. die) which is one of many result of the "Original Sin." Due to this one action, humans are not able to be in God's presence at all (think of Abraham, Moses [he had God's backed turned to him when receiving the commandments so even there he couldn't see God and he aged drastically], and etc. [the one you could possibly make an exception for besides Enoch is Jacob/Israel but the original text in Hebrew points more to an angel/spirit from heaven than God and some Jewish and Christians believe this could be the Messiah/Christ]) and this could be the because they took the knowledge for themselves instead of patiently waiting to be taught by God (they took it for themselves). This will follow all humans because Adam and Eve are not the first "humans" they are the first "man" who give birth to "humans" Cain, Able, and Seth. A great example of this the King Solomon. When he was younger and first took the throne God asked him what he would want most and he asked for wisdom from God and so God blessed him with it because it was "righteous" in his eyes. However, you look further down Solomon's life and you see the corruption and errors he falls into with wives and idolatry, yet he received wisdom from God. This is do to the fact that even though Solomon was blessed by God the innate nature from the original sin has caused man to have difficulties at times to understand and even follow God's laws (like a teenager) The New Testament (Christians, with the exception of possibly Catholics and maybe the Orthodox) through Christ and several of the Epistles state that children are innocent and should strive to be like them in their innocents. That the sins or the father do not pass n to the son, but due to the "Original Sin" over time children will grow up and learn to sin from their parents, elders, siblings, cousins, and etc. because of the consequence of "Original Sin." When he says that we you the saying "you're being childish," you need to think about how "we" use that in today's context. Usually we use that when some one is acting stubborn more so than actually innocent as a child. You can replace the word stubborn with childish and 90% of the time it would have the same meaning. However, Christ talks about being innocent like the children because children have it hard to understand what sin is while at the same time having a built in fundamental understanding of when someone is being wronged or not. this is a similar state as Adam and Eve would have most likely been in before they took of the Fruit of knowledge. There are several passages as well in the New Testament that make reference to the fact that one needs "to be at the age of knowing" before the consequences of sin are actually held up on judgement day. This is similar (not exact) concept of the Bot Mitzvah and the Bar Mitzvah representation in the Jewish culture and tradition. A child has to be taught why things are right or wrong, but psychology shows that children have a fundamental understanding of what is right or wrong. It is rough edge and not refined and teaching why the act is right or wrong turns the coal into a diamond or into dust. That is basically the difference. That is what majority of Christians see the "Original Sin" as. Not something that makes us all evil in the sense that from birth in general when come into the world with sin, but more so that due to the consequences of the "Original Sin," which isn't actually the first human sin (that goes to Cain murdering Able), humans now have the capability to sin. This misunderstanding and interpretation, again, is due to two of the three tendencies I mention before: Legalism, Traditionalism, and Nationalism.
Brandon Cacioppo wrote; “However, you look further down Solomon's life and you see the corruption and errors he falls into with wives and idolatry, yet he received wisdom from God. This is do to the fact that even though Solomon was blessed by God the innate nature from the original sin has caused man to have difficulties at times to understand and even follow God's laws (like a teenager)” I disagree. * Humanity does not share the original sin of Adam and Eve. (Ambrose) - Free will is not weakened because of the original sin of Adam and Eve. (Augustine) - Free will is not destroyed by the original sin of Adam and Eve. (Luther and Calvin) * Solomon chose to disobey God, which is sin, because of free will. * The idea that all sin is caused by a prior original sin, which has become the innate nature of humanity, is flawed. - If all sin must have a root cause in a prior original sin, then what prior sin led Adam and Eve to sin? There wasn't any sin by humanity before Adam and Eve. Adam and Eve sinned because of free will. * The innate nature of humanity which causes sin is free will.
Why Jesus is not Messiah? Point no-1: According to Christianity Jesus is Divine. But Messiah will not be divine. He will come from human parents. Point no-2: Messiah will not die before complete his Mission. But Jesus died on cross. Point no-3: Messiah will not come 2 times. This is not his 2nd coming. He comes once before end of the world. Point no-4: Messiah should not be cursed. And he will not contradict Jewish Bible and will not strike against commandments of God. Because According to Torah, crucifixion is a curse from God. And no one bears sins of other people. Human not for any salvation. God says he desires mercy but not sacrifice. And he will forgive sinful people. But Jesus bears concept of human sacrifice as a salvation. And he was crushed. He represented human sacrifice as a salvation against commandments of God.
Adam and Eve did not know right from wrong until they ate the apple and they would not have eaten the apple if they did not have absolute free will! There is no such thing as original sin.
Sumit Fail to understand what the scriptures are saying. Adam represents first man Eve first woman . Parents can an may condemn their children. Parents raise their children good or bad . When a child gets of age they have the choice of changing their life follow their parents or changing. Our God given freedom of choice. Sodom for example. No good so children had nothing but bad influence available. Why HE destroyed all . Many other examples . The Holy scriptures where written for us to live a better an blessed life , not a way to enter heaven. If God wanted you in heaven you would be an Angel not human . Learn to live this life , that the LORD has blessed you with , treat your fellow man right . Thank the LORD daily.

Psalms 51:3-6 “3 Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your kindness; according to Your great mercies, erase my transgressions
4 Wash me thoroughly of my iniquity, and purify me of my sin.
5 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.
6 Against You alone have I sinned, and I have done what is evil in Your sight, in order that You be justified in Your conduct, and right in Your judgment.”
* David goes into detail about the ever present reality of him falling into sin due to his own actions. David is also asking God to purify him of his sin.
- The Psalms apply to all humanity and in this situation what David is saying is that all people sin due to their choices.
- Therefore all people should ask God for the forgiveness of sin.
* Now to psalms 51:7;
"7 Behold, with iniquity I was formed, and with sin my mother conceived me.”
* The conception of a human being is due to the actions of a man and a woman. Since David has said that he and all humanity commit sins, his parents must have sinned.
All our parents have sinned. And the moment of conception involved the actions of a man and a woman who had previously sinned.
* Again, David is saying that all people have committed sins (including parents) through their actions and that God can forgive sins.
(My reference is this part of Rashi’s his commentary about David's intention in writing this verse;
“The main part of my creation is from a male and a female, both of whom are full of iniquity.”)
King Solomon So you can see everybody that doesn’t believe in Jesus descending into hell after they die?
CarolAnn D; you wrote "the theory of original sin" and someone questioned that.
I will give you my thoughts on this.
* In the Garden of Eden, since Adam and Eve were the original humans, they also did the original actions.
- There are two possible types of actions; sin and obedience to God.
- A. Sin, which applies to Genesis as defined in Britannica; “Sin is regarded ... as the deliberate and purposeful violation of the will of God.”
- B. And the opposite of sin (in Genesis) which involves obedience to the will of God (“way of the Lord”) which is also described as doing what is right;
* Examples in Genesis of obeying God, following God's will, doing what is right / the way of the Lord.
- Such as Genesis 12:1 & 4, where God ordered Abraham to move. (NET translation)
1. Now the Lord said[a] to Abram,[b] “Go out[c] from your country, your relatives, and your father’s household to the land that I will show you.[d]...
4. So Abram left,[l] just as the Lord had told him to do...”
- And in Genesis 18:19 which involves God talking about Abraham (NIV translation);
“19 ...he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right...”
* I will apply these ideas of right and wrong/sin, obedience and disobedience to God to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
- A. Obedience to God;
(Chabad translation)
- Genesis 2:19-20; “19 And the Lord God formed from the earth every beast of the field and every fowl of the heavens, and He brought [it] to man to see what he would call it, and whatever the man called each living thing, that was its name.
23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.”
24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.
* What does that mean?
- Adam and Eve had free will. They had the ability to choose what is right and the ability to choose what is wrong.
All of humanity (if they are capable) has been given that ability.
* Humanity does not share the original sin of Adam and Eve. (Ambrose)
- Free will is not weakened because of the original sin of Adam and Eve. (Augustine)
- Free will is not destroyed by the original sin of Adam and Eve. (Luther and Calvin)
* Again, the story of Adam and Eve is about the original human free will which all of humanity shares with them.
bb1111116 Right.

How can I send my question to Rabbi Tovia?
There's always a problem when people take the language of mythology and apply it literally. Christians also understand psychology. These days they think of "original sin" as human behaviour that will be considered sinful, psychopathic behaviour in the adult. But necessary for survival in the infant. If infants didn't demand attention, they'd likely die. This observation was applied as mythology. Especially by a man that didn't have children of his own.

Thanks for the this commentary. I love learning and reinforcing my own intuitions from Rabbinic theologians. Jeremiah 17:9-10 seems to suggest original sin.
It just says we're inclined toward deceit, which is something usually borne out of a distorted sense of self-interest. It has nothing to do with inheriting someone else's sins.
It's how Sin began. Sin is subconsciously known generations after generations. Thus a promised seed of eve will come and explain it so to rid of it.

the word is usually used in reference to the "praise" of 'God' ..
The word is the source of "hallelujah" ..
The Hebrew term is more technically translated "Let us praise Yah" ..
Furthermore,
We were given understanding that some believe jesus in fact was born from that womb of the morning ..

And he that riseth up against me as the unrighteous." ..
"Will you speak wickedly for god ?
And talk deceitfully for him ?
Will you accept his person ?
Will you contend for god ?

He will surely reprove you,
If you do secretly except persons ..
Shall not his excellency make you afraid ?
And his dread fall upon you ?"

'They' have smitten me upon the cheek reproachfully;
'They' have gathered themselves together against me ..

And turned me over into the hands of the wicked .."
Job 16 ..
"Moreover Job continued his parable, and said,
As god liveth,

Who hath taken away my judgment;
And the Almighty,
(Not Satan)
Who hath vexed my soul;
All the while my breath is in me,
And the spirit of god is in my nostrils;

Nor my tongue utter deceit ..

Will god hear his cry when trouble cometh upon him ?
Will he delight himself in the Almighty ?
Will he always call upon god ??
I will teach you by the hand of god:
That which is with the Almighty will I not conceal ..
Behold,
All ye yourselves have seen it;
Why then are ye thus altogether vain ??
This is the portion of a wicked man with God,
And the heritage of oppressors,
Which they shall receive of the Almighty ..
If his children be multiplied,
IT is for the sword:
And his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread ..
Those that remain of him shall be buried in death:
And his widows shall not weep .."

For in the thing wherein they dealt proudly
He was above them." ..

I don't think I agree with Rabbi Tovia Singer on this.
I don't think these verses are talking about the sins of a child.
First off, sinful nature is just what we are many of us.
We're greedy, selfish by nature not just because we're children but bc that's the animal instinct.
And by "sins of your youth."
I think its referring to the out of control sinning one does in their adolescents up to their mid 20's or even older.
Older people don't seem to sin as much. They got it out of their system.
Haha the question on the Torah ends up being decided by Freudian psychology.

@@Moogles1982 - The Jewish concept of the evil inclination is very similar to the christian concept of original sin in all but name.
By the coming of the Messiah, the sin offering was provided:
Isa 53:12 Darby Therefore will I assign him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong: because he hath poured out his soul unto death, and was reckoned with the transgressors; and he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
Isa 53:5 Darby But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his stripes we are healed.
From scripture, redemption is promised and is a must.
Good but I gave thumbs down bcz the video and title are not related

I thought you consider Fraud "an Evil man"? I am alittle confused.
even an evil man can have good thoughts and behaviours ...
God died for sins.
Is it original or dublicate?
Let's go back to Genesis...
Genesis 2:17 "... and of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou dost not eat of it, for in the day of thine eating of it-dying thou dost die.'
Before their breaking of God's commandment Adam and Eve were naked yet were not ashamed... after they ate and gained the knowledge of good and evil they became aware of their nakedness and were ashamed.
@Sam Samuels - LOL! Whatever, dude.
Unlike G-d whom can see all humans have faith alone.
We start with evil (selfish) inclination alone, and as we grow older we receive a good inclination. That's when the inner war starts, and that is when we first begin to be aware of the evil in us (because the good inclination joins and makes us aware of our dark side)
Is that what they told you? 😞
Whatever crime you committed you are not going to be punish because Jesus paid for it. So which means all Christians that commit sin isn't going to pay for it so why bother praying. All the sins are paid for.
is not the sin the mothers?
Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned-- this is also found in the Tanakh Ecclesiastes 7:20 Indeed, there is no one on earth who is righteous,(A)
no one who does what is right and never sins.(B) - it is not that we are totally depraved in the sense that no man can do no good but we are involved with sin in our daily lives since the day of Adam and Eve we all deal with the Sin Nature Daily and we all will die for our own Sins Ezekiel 18.
So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth
these verses come before he even made adam.
it means it was preplanned they where meant to eat it so they could multiply. it wasnt a bad thing they ate from it as thats the only way they could multiply and have children. and the reason he told them to eat from that tree first was if they eat from the tree of life first people would never have been born except them 2. then that tree of life was protected because if any of there descendants get to it they could be immortals who cause chaos. once people know whats good and bad and then choose good they can eat from the tree of life.
So God couldn't simply have designed humans to be mortal in the first place, without all the unnecessary drama?
This is an utterly confusing answer..is Rabbi saying the passages refered yo are wrong because a child is not capable of good and bad morally?
Is it not interesting Jesus said; And said: Amen I say to you, unless you be converted, and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, he is the greater in the kingdom of heaven.
No. It's not interesting at all. I don't even know if he said that.

"Who is this who darkens counsel because of words without knowledge?" Job. 38:2
It is abundandly clear from Tanakh that Adam's sin not only transformed the world for Adam and his lineage but also transformed Adam's and his lineage's body, soul, and spirit.

An important part of the repent, is to stop sin and start do good things (OVERCOME!), and you should look in the whole bible what god think about someone that don't understand this.

Shalom Rabbi,
Why Bible (New Testament) teaches Tawheed?
John 1:18 μονογενὴς θεός? Monogenēs G-d. Monogenēs = היחיד (In Hebrew). Which is Wahid in Arabic. Tawheed is from Wahid.
Age 40 or age 60 story
This is do to the fact that even though Solomon was blessed by God the innate nature from the original sin has caused man to have difficulties at times to understand and even follow God's laws (like a teenager)
The New Testament (Christians, with the exception of possibly Catholics and maybe the Orthodox) through Christ and several of the Epistles state that children are innocent and should strive to be like them in their innocents.
Brandon Cacioppo wrote;
“However, you look further down Solomon's life and you see the corruption and errors he falls into with wives and idolatry, yet he received wisdom from God. I disagree.
* Humanity does not share the original sin of Adam and Eve. (Ambrose)
- Free will is not weakened because of the original sin of Adam and Eve. (Augustine)
- Free will is not destroyed by the original sin of Adam and Eve. (Luther and Calvin)
* Solomon chose to disobey God, which is sin, because of free will.
