Been to Japan a good half dozen+ times, never been a trip yet that I haven't downed a burger or two, many excellent burger joints around Tokyo to choose from.
It’s funny - Tokyonis where East and West USA meets with fast food! If we had an IN&OUT, it would be complete! They do have pop up stores once a year though.
So many businesses that failed in US, but thrive in Japan. TGI Friday, Tower Records and I was surprised to find out how many Kua'aina Burgers there were. There used to be 3 in Hawaii and 1 in Japan. Now there 1 in Hawaii and 10+ in Japan...Amazing 👍🏽🙏🏽
Better than the Kyoto burger. Tempted to go back - but there are other places with better burgers at a better price. I don’t feel I got my money’s worth with this burger, in hindsight, kind of a let down actually.
They should have made it like a loco Moco. I know that has nothing to do with Kyoto, but if they're going to put rice in a burger they're going to have to slather it in gravy.
John, you make a valid point, that McDonald’s would be a better choice as for authenticity. I was at a Burger King and opted for the American style junior whopper. (Kyoto whopper was on the menu) . I wasn’t sure if the bottom ingredient was rice😅😅. After trying Japanese attempts at international dishes, I’m sticking to Japanese food except for karage 😊😊😊. As a child , we had Japanese neighbors and adopted white rice into many combo dishes. So, I’d probably would like the Kyoto whopper. I’ll give an atta boy to those salary men that worked on this concept, please be nicer John 😁😜😄
It’s not! Never heard of Kyoto rice! Sake 🍶 yes, not rice 😂 that’s why this is so geared to the 30M tourists coming to Japan annually. Match Uji Whopper is next!
Off Topic: I have a topic for you! WHY are car garages not popular in Japan? In America, car garages are used not only for cars, they are for hobby. DIY auto repair, DIY home repair, wood working, etc. It seems there is no interest for DIY in Japan. OR is there no DIY culture, because there are no garages?
@ Americans love their garages and DIY in them. In Japan I see carports everywhere. Actually even in rural areas, from what I could see with street view maps (my Japanese wife wants to move us to Japan).
Aloha John. I just missed your livestream. You and I are alike in that I too like to try new menu items because you just never know how good something may be unless you give it a try. Not sure if anyone else caught it but at the 15:07 mark you said "kaw-fee" like a New Yorker. Haha. I was just thinking about New York because I want to try an authentic New York style pizza fresh from the oven. Wondered if Japan has New York or Chicago style pizza? Thank you for taking one for the team on this Kyoto Whopper. I tried the shrimp burger at the McDonald's on Takeshita Street and it was actually pretty good. Small in size but full of flavor. Have a nice weekend my brother.
They have Chicago Pizza but it’s not the same. Not even close, just deep dish. NY pizza - 🍕 I’ll take you to a guy down the road, from NY - but he’s open on the weekends.
Thanks for trying so I don’t have to. Our local (Hawaii)Jack in the Box came out with a loco moco burger. Two patties, a layer of rice, an egg and lots of gravy. The newslady said it was good but that’s too much carbs for me. I prefer coke and McDonald’s in Japan. Unfortunately, I found out I’m diabetic so I quit soda. Glad to report that my sugar is under control and I enjoy coke about 3-4 times a year. Saw the video where PhotoLuke met up with you and Peter.
Mmm, gravy! You have me at gravy. Yes, I’ve been very strict about cutting carbs and have done so for 18 months. Lost some weight too! Today was a once a month present. It’s very eat to get lost in the world of food and cola. Those 3 years when we were holed up really changed me. Photoluke is awesome, love the family! Always looking forward to see them, see how big Austin has gotten!
I went to Kyoto recently and saw that The Burger King at Teramachi dori has the Whopper called “NINNIKU GARLIC THE POUNDER“ with four burger patties. ¥1,990+tax It’s your guess why it’s called ‘The Pounder”. I didn’t try it because I didn’t want to eat at a fast food joint on my weekend getaway🍔. 3:30
The ads 😂 so true The food, better than the US, although BK Japan disappointed me with meat quality. The service, 4 workers at BK from South Asia, they had big smiles! I don’t think there were any Japanese behind the counter but still, good service! ❤
5:30 “Where’s the BEEF!” 😂 Reminds me of Wendy’s burger commercial from 1984. Clara Peller was the lady that said that famous line. It still makes me smile when I hear it after 40 years 😊
Just got back from Japan. I'm a BK guy over McD. This works because BK was packed all over Tokyo for the week I was there. Absolutely this is just a whopper with rice. I wanted to try this but just couldn't stomach the lines when I can have a 500 yen udon next door.
Had the Kyoto burger there the other week, it was fine. I enjoyed that for Y100 more I could upgrade to a beer. Can't do that at home. I enjoyed the whopper I had there once when they had avocado. That was back in 2016, not sure if they do that every avocado season? Delicious.
In Atlanta, Umami burger does taste good. However, it such a small amount for money, it doesn't make sense. In the same building, you can get an amazing beto burrito for the same price. And, the beto burrito is literally 2 meals
I wonder why it’s mediocre in Japan, a tougher market. It’s def a California burger, not Japanese. Over processed. Underwhelming. Fries were average. Shake Shack is still on top for mid range burger, not close.
I was in Ariake this summer. Saw a concert in Ariake Garden Theatre. Was great! Liked the area and also Umami Burger and Tsumugi for the best shave ice I had. I will skip Burger King. I skip it everywhere in the world haha. Love your videos!
I love the whopper with its pickles , lettuce tomatoes and onions ... But that burger you are eating would be better if it was a blended burger meat within rice but yeah that slice of meat wasn't big enough to taste and it was so unbalanced ... Say it ..... John, say it .. your loving it 😂
theres a burger king in my home station yoyogi uehara but other than that, i dont see them very often. i dont think i've seen another one outside of yoyogi uehara station actually. anyway, i saw the sign for the kyoto whopper a few days ago and i was interested but thought it was way too expensive. glad you tried it so i dont have to haha. im also a mcdonalds guy
Not gonna lie. I do love Starbuck's macha frappuccino. There's also a mom and pop Japanese shop in town. Has lots of Japanese snacks and stuff. Fun little shop. Carytown Richmond VA. So, I love it when you try snacks and if they have it try it here too.
No need to lie about that! It’s good :) matcha 🍵 it’s hard to taste the regional difference. Subtle. Shizuoka matcha is as good imo. People love brands.
Did you eat a McChicken in the 80s? Everyone I know (including me) disliked the first one, and then like a week later they suddenly wanted another one and then they loved it. Today's McChicken is not the same as the 80s version which was so awesome.

A bread knife 🍴 in a case :) don’t turn me in 😂 🚓 Wendy’s has a weird history here. They came in with Daiei first, I ate at one in the late 1990s. Then they left Japan, getting out of that relationship and returning with the first kitchen group I think. I don’t think they’re very popular though. McD has the fast food burger market along with Lotteria tied up. Others are small players. Mid range starts with Mos Burger, a weird between position - and Shake Shack and Kua Aina are leading the upper middle. It’s a weird market, few Japanese eat it often enough and I don’t understand why so many American burger chains come here - except to cater to tourists who are increasing.
@onlyinjapanGO Hmm.. didn't even think about that.. I just thought it was interesting you knew you'd have to cut the burger in two and brought what was necessary from home.. 😂 If it were me I'd have forgotten to bring it and would suddenly realize it during the video, or would have had to swing by Daiso to buy a knife.. I've heard Wendy's is known by a rather funny name in Japan. There's a Mrs. Eats video about it.
In Japan, McD burgers 🍔 are said to be better. For burgers, I’ll pay a bit more for shack shack or local places or better yet, make myself, but in the run - you are right. However, ¥999 for a flavorless, leathery beef patty is not good.
Anyone can throw rice on a hamburger as a hack and try it out. Basically they added a lump of rice with ZERO taste to a burger. I want to see a Hiroshima okonomiyaki burger or a tempura burger.
It’s supposed to have a special sauce! I think maybe they forget it 😂 nothing special about it except the name “KYOTO” Ah the okonomiyaki burger would be great!!
Victorianox Bread knife. It could be a steak knife! Never used it for that though 😂 it was a gift when. Now that I think about it, it was a gift from the people of a group I founded and ended after 6 years. We’d eat Yakiniku month, had hundreds of members. They gave me this knife. Meat eating club. Probably for steak. Wow! 🤯
I do too but they’re actually in a weird spot, they’re not cheap nor expensive. They hit this burger twilight zone where the market is actually small. If they made better burgers bigger, they’d triple revenue. Taste is good but I’m never fully satisfied, leaving there full and happy. Like watching black and white TV, something missing like the color.
Double carbs in 2024 is so ridiculous, maybe that’s the angle? Flavorless. Plain whopper would have been cheaper and simply better but we all want to try it ourselves.
It doesn’t beat Shake Shack, mos burger is mid range too (size is small) but the meat quality is meh. The way to put it together and mix flavors, top notch!!
So it's basically just a standard Whopper with a layer of rice then? 😂
SHOCKER!
Yup … and KYOTO is written larger than whopper 🤷🏻♂️
@@onlyinjapanGO And it's american prices basically! Must be for the gullible tourists lol. I wouldn't spend more then 750 on a burger tbh.
LOTS of rice

Funny thing, right? People still read newspapers on the morning subway too. It’s a comforting sight to see for someone born in the 1970s.
The ninikku (?) garlic burger looks pretty good i kinda want to try it
Better than the Kyoto burger. Tempted to go back - but there are other places with better burgers at a better price. I don’t feel I got my money’s worth with this burger, in hindsight, kind of a let down actually.
This Burger makes me so interesting. Thanks for the try John.
Curiosity! … Mos Burger’s rice burgers are better tasting but I think you’re gonna wanna try it!
“I am going to eat it so you don’t have to.” You are so funny John. Lol
Im also a coke guy, i also grew up with McDonalds. But when i tried the whopper for the first time, whopper beat the big mac every single time.
Woah! I think in Japan, Big Mac wins. I think the BK beef was tasteless and dry. But the real tomato 🍅 topping really is good!!!
lol thank you for sharing
I neved had eaten Whopper in anywhere ,my favorate is the Bacon King ,although that Whopper 🍔looked delicious😋Thank you for sharing this 🙂👍!!!
I can’t remember if I’ve ever eaten one either … might have been my first! 😳 🍔
They should have made it like a loco Moco. I know that has nothing to do with Kyoto, but if they're going to put rice in a burger they're going to have to slather it in gravy.
Jack in the box hawaii has a loco moco burger currently. Smash burger is the national special and loco moco is an approved alteration.
The one thing Burger King does better than McDonalds is its Onion Rings. Never go to Burger King without getting the Onion rings.
My mom loves then! We find them on NY THRUWAY rest stops going north 😂 they are good! I always steal one or two or three.
I see you Willem trying to get John to quote "review brah" XD

theres a burger joint called lil' Woodys in Shibuya that has some good burgers. a little pricey but feels more "american"

I’d call this a rice sandwich since the meat was so thin and I couldn’t taste it and a rice sandwich makes no sense with bread.
McDonalds, Burger King as well as Coke, Pepsi etc are excellent representatives of American Junk Food.
True! In JP, Coca-Cola sells more tea and coffee though. Not so bad ^_^
THe worst one was the McDonalds Big Manhatten. It had "pastrami" in it that had the texture and taste of a rubber swimmer's towel
Oooooh, that is not something fast food should attempt. We need the McRib here. I wonder if McD JP could do it better.
Japan is the only country I’ve been where Burger King was decent 😂

I like the Whopper, but not with rice! Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun- (Big Mac).

No place in a burger for rice. If u want rice buy onigiri. Ok it's different but I'll pass
Double carbs in 2024 is so ridiculous, maybe that’s the angle? Flavorless. Plain whopper would have been cheaper and simply better but we all want to try it ourselves.
@@onlyinjapanGO it's good for these chains to try something different. But as you said, you can carry out market research on our behalf 🤣
Mos Premium in Yokohama = Best burger chain period! When is McDonalds gonna bring back MEGA SAUSAGE! Saw it back in '09.
It doesn’t beat Shake Shack, mos burger is mid range too (size is small) but the meat quality is meh. The way to put it together and mix flavors, top notch!!
thats funny, i stayed at that hotel and ate at that burger king lol good ol' ariake
