Rob Flax Carleen Hutchins cleverly solved the playability problem of those larger Violas that are the optimized size for those low notes by reorienting to be played Vertically like a Cello.

Those Mechanical Tuners are a big plus cause they turn more smoothly. The interest of using Machine heads on Violin, Viola, or Cello (or any Bowed instrument) has gone back up since technology got updated.

They've also put enough curvature in the bridge so that changing bow angles is easier. The Geared tuning machines are a big plus cause tuning is alot easier.
Violins with 5 (or more) Strings are also useful for Classical Musicians cause on a Gig there's a call saying "hey we need some violinists" you get there & it turns out they actually need a Violist. Extended range Violins are one of many types of Violins capable of reading Violin and Viola sheet music.

Rob Flax I find that String players at all levels (beginner to expert) should have Carbon Composite Acoustic-Electric Instruments as well as Carbon Composite bows with Synthetic Bow hair on them because they're a lot sturdier plus the pickup allows a headset to be plugged in for quiet practice. The 5 String versions (tuned C, G, D, A, E from low to high in Fifths including the Bass cause it has better intonation) would make the kids happy cause they have a full 5 Octave range which facilitates transposing on the fly to fit the ranges of other instruments, vocalists, or even both especially on church gigs.
Spaghetti Western Songs by Ennino Morricone sound awesome with a 5 String Violin cause of those lower pitches which sound ideal for a new cover since Ennino Morricone sadly Died. The 5 String Violin Body is slightly larger than a 4 String Body to help the Low C resonate.

The C String that came on this instrument was a Larsen Original Medium Tension 5 String Violin C String (You can tell it has a Yellow Band at the Peg Head end which indicates that it's a little bit thicker than the G String.
Rob Flax One thing you can do on a 5 String Violin that you can't do on a Standard Violin really well is play Cello pieces up an Octave because the 5 String Violin is one of many Violins that can read Cello music up an Octave. In that case we should do Elgar's Cello Concerto in E Minor up an Octave on a 5 String Violin.

You may wanna put Wittner Fine Tune Pegs on your other Violin (along w/ a Wittner Tailpiece that dosen't have fine tuners) because it'll really enhance it. The lack of fine tuners on the Tailpiece livens up the sound by allowing the top to vibrate more freely exactally like a Baroque Violin.
Double stops quite good. Tone is deep. Plus you get the low C note. I'd be interested to see how it sounds in a band setting, especially through sound monitor. Daryl Anger was recently impressed by it as well. Very interesting tuning challenge. I thought the tuning gears night solve this? That's quite an effects rig system you have there.

Hi, Great video, this is the first time I've found you on youtube but I'll look for other videos now. Can you tell me what shoulder rest you put on? I also have an amazing red Glasser 5 string. I have a Kun rest, but I find the foot position is in conflict with the extra chin rest twiddly thing foot. Looking for a new shoulder rest anyway....but not sure which one to order on-line as I can't escape lockdown to visit a store.
Honestly I struggled with finding a good shoulder rest for years, and then discovered a technique change that allowed many more options: my teacher at NEC encouraged me to practice without a shoulder rest. The result: I learned to rely on my collarbone more readily, and so now almost any shoulder rest works better. That said, I have an Everest shoulder rest on the Glasser now. and a stupid fancy one whose brand I can't remember on Miss Molly (my Roth).
Which Neumann and Peluso are you using, they sound incredible on your violins. Especially the acoustic. And thanks for the in depth review! I just bought one...Love it! But might have a luthier set it up as the bridge is a bit high and not rounded enough for my taste.

It’s so delicate, so many situations I don’t want to take it (outside, hot, humid, cold, etc). Could this replace an acoustic violin if I’m not playing a ton of Classical performances? Yes, absolutely! The main selling point I see used to market these is precisely that: they're durable and safe to use in places a more delicate instrument might not be great (like an outdoor show at a farmer's market, or a hot festival stage). I haven't left my house in a year, so instead I ended up putting octave strings on my Glasser and now it's become a "chin cello." I'd reach out to Glasser Violins directly. They're awesome people. Maybe they'll work with you... Violin is such a magical instrument, and I wish for you many decades of enjoyment and music making! Glasser would be a good choice if you're worried about the instrument breaking, as it's more durable and less prone to wear and tear than a wood violin... But I hear you that the upfront cost of any violin can be a big obstacle. If you dream it you can do it!

22:02 The Major Third Harmonic is kinda sharp, this is why lots of early Fretted Instruments from the Baroque era have adjustable frets.
The reason the strings are closer together is so that the neck sits more natrually in your hands.

Absolutely! The challenge isn't the pegs, it's my ears :-)
Because you have Planetary Geared Tuners you'll have to buy a Whittner Geared Peg String Winder so you can crank them when you restring it.
You should get Planetery Pegs for your Wooden Violin cause it'll allow you to eliminate the fine tuners from the tailpiece.
Now they need to get a license from Woods to make a composite Woods Viper violin. That would be awesome!

The Acoustic-Electric Model is quite a fun one cause you can hook up to an amp & plug in headphones for practice, & the 5 String version is great cause you can play in every key more easily. The AEX Acoustic-Electric 5 String Violin Outfit has everything you'll be expecting. Bobby Hicks plays the 5 String Violin & you can cover his music with one. I'm getting a Yinfente 5 String Electric Cello (at $300) so I can play Bobby Hicks Fiddle patch on Cello & also play all the Hal Leonard Choral arrangements of songs on Cello.
Does he have Ling Ling insurance and practice his 40 hours? Lamentable. Especially for the amount of sacreligious this viola has lol
