To my observation, I think the iPad 6 got more upgrades because it was released two years after the iPhone 7, so Apple had to keep it relevant for schools and students much longer. Plus, its massive battery and larger body handle the heat of newer software way better than the tiny, older iPhone 7 ever could.

The iPad 6 was my first modern Apple device, apart from a 4s I got in 2016. I got the iPad 6 in 2020 and an iPhone 7 shortly after. I remember how relieved I was that I upgraded to an iPhone SE days before the iOS 16 betas were released, because they dropped support for the 7.
The iPad had only 2 GB of RAM, not even 3 like the 7 Plus.

Hey! This is my iPad! Mine is in mint condition with ipados 14. It's been a Notability machine for college, back when the app was actually good, prior to the app becoming a rental app. Samsung Notes with the S Pen is a huge improvement to this thing. Thank god for Android!

The iPhone 7 and even 7 Plus didn't updated to iOS 16 and 17 due *Neural Engine* as I'm aware.
Apple gives more life to iPads because people don't change them every 2 years. They "stretched the gum" on the iPad 6 because it was the standard educational model.
On the iPhone 7, Apple preferred to force the renewal plan. If the iPhone 7 had upgraded to iOS 16, no one would have bought the iPhone 8 or SE 2, because the 7 is still an aesthetically perfect machine. - Gemini

Yknow, I used to play FORTNITE on that iPad. The UI lagging and the general chugging is just no way due to age. I swear they are making older devices like this work less efficiently and lag more just so you throw old stuff away. OF COURSE, the old chip is old. But so is my 2015 Macbook Air. Web 3 and 4 content kinda hitches up here and there, but it eats any task I would expect that chip to do. The iPad can handle so much more than it shows and I am saddened that my high school treasure I had is dying over time.
I could see the ram being a problem, if not for the Macbook only having 4 gigs and still being able to do whatever I feel like a cheap laptop should do. A problem that is catching up though, is modern apps have AWFUL ram eating UIs that make it probably have to switch to a swap/pagefile (assuming they have that on iOS.)
