      Started collecting at age 12 thanks to my mother. She got me my first US and World Albums. She worked for the Federal Government, and would save the stamps that were being thrown away every day in correspondence. I stopped when I went to college. Have recently gotten back into it and have been catching up. Didn't realize how much I missed it.

    In a box from an auction, I found a check box full of $2 bills (bought the box for $5, had 70 - $2 bills plus other junk). All are mint condition bills from 1976 (for the bicentennial) except each has a state stamp on it that has been postmarked from a single date that year ( all 50 states, 1 bill per each). There is also 20 that have the liberty bell stamp, also postmarked. I have always figured these would someday have value so I have been saving them. Maybe the stamps on the bills will lower the value but I always thought it was a really unique find.

    • @epicfantasy
      @epicfantasy  7 лет назад

      wow, that is a pretty unique find.

    • @curiouscharacter1
      @curiouscharacter1 3 года назад

      Just for Info....When they reissued the $2 bills in 1976 they offered an option to turn the bill into a "First Day of Issue" bill. The US Mint got the post office to agree to date cancel the new bills upon customer request so the owners could prove that they had purchased the bills on the First Day they were available. However, the USPS made it conditional that the customer purchase a stamp from them, and place it on the bill before they'd do this. Pretty smart; the post office gets the price of first class postage and doesn't have to do anything for it (no sorting, filling mail pouches, delivering, etc) so it's free money to them. As I recall, the only stamp permitted was a 1776 flag stamp. I had 50 done and on about 20 of them I got them cancelled with an unapproved stamp which I figured would be rare. WRONG! This one day program was so popular with collectors that virtually every post office ran out of the approved stamp and used any and all of what they had to satisfy demand. Sadly, even in mint condition, there are so many out there that they are virtually worth right at face value today.

    Have a few albums and a couple of plastic containers of stamps inherited from my grandpa and my aunt (who got it from my other grandpa). Doubt there's anything of value or even if they're in decent condition, but there's a family friend who has probably amassed a few hundred thousand euro worth of stamps in his life, so I figured it might be worth getting into it (also it seems like a fun hobby). Also I have a nice mix of both Dutch and Canadian stamps due to my family having lived in Canada for over a decade.

    Earlier in your video, you introduced an "error" stamp. Unfortunately, the example $2 stamp as presented is NOT an error. It is Scott 4806, which commemorates the "error" 24 cent stamp of Scott C6a . In fact, it is a rarity should you find the plane flying right side up on the $2 stamp. I don't want the viewers to think that if they find a $2 stamp with an inverted plane like in your video, they would own a million dollars stamp.

      They're actually called stamp mounts.... You buy them in strips or pre-cut.... You can buy a mount cutter as well, if you use the strips... it cuts them more precisely than scissors.
      The companies that make them, Showguard, Scott, are the most common.

      The problem some people have..... the stamp he put in that mount costs less than the mount. Which can bother some people.
      Stamp hinges are sold 1,000 in a bag, and cost a lot less.

      99.99% of the time it's OK, but there are a few early stamps printed with water soluble ink - THAT WOULD NOT BE GOOD! I also have a stamp that was printed by mistake on the inked side over the ink. It's a Canadian rarity and I wonder how many were destroyed due to soaking!!
