NitPix well you'll never make a futurist! Black mirror was never meant to entertain first. They do have robot insects, bees are dying, drones killing is real, and Internet mob mentality is very real. Which part of black mirror Is futurist commentary first, then entertainment second. Don't you get !??????
I saw your review before Harry's, and I gotta say, it's really cool to not only see such a differing viewpoint, but it's also heartwarming to see the both of you support each other. I think you both make a lot of good points, and while I agree with your critique of the main characters being unengaging, the overall message of the episode hit hardest and was by far the most brilliant one yet in terms of how it mirrors the current social climate of apathy and how cruel we can be under the veil of anonymity - or at least, what we've erroneously convinced ourselves is anonymity.
To me this is the most underrated episode of black mirror. The music is brilliant and the story is so fucking haunting. Probably in my top 5 of the series.
This episode terrified me, it's basically a commentary on cancel culture, but instead of just being fired from a job or no one ever speaking to you again.... The consequence is death.
It's already scary what cancel culture can do it can ban your credit card stop you from buying items and even arrest you for no reason and it'll just get worst
@@lilglitchboi7259she didn't mock the death, she critiqued the choice to do it. The death was intentionally provocative and traumatising. The only issue is dismissing it as 'attention seeking' . There is a reason free speech exists. Don't agree with her article? Argue against it, debunk it. Let it spark conversation, because her article wasn't just hateful trolling, it was legitimate arguments that differed from the popular opinion. When you immediately decide to partake in hateful mob mentality it reveals your ignorance and proves the point that humans revel in cruelty. And what do u mean cancel culture victims get mad when others have differing opinions? Its literally the exact opposite. People insult and troll people they disagree with, using personal attacks, calls for violence and constant death threats. In a logical society you engage with those you disagree with, you don't try to 'cancel' them for having thoughts lmao? Cancel culture victims should not be shut down bc ppl disagree.
Also to point out. Many Black Mirror viewers seem to find it okay when an evil person is punished, even if it is in a terrible way (for example White Bear, or Shut up and dance). This one might also be an indirect critisism against such people, because the #Deathto people often believed that they are right to punish someone (and they like it) just because someone is "evil". Critisism against our desire to see someone getting punished, which we then cover up with "they deserve it". Just my two cents
It's vigilante justice. Makes us wonder is it right to punish bad people, make them suffer, being extremely tortured etc. These kind of topics are always debatable. BM is brilliant at portraying such complex & terrifying stories.
Wilson The point of all those episodes is to make us decide if those people deserved it. They make us sympathize with the protagonist, then show us how fucked up they are. Unless you miss the point of the episodes, you shouldn't immediately think "oh they're evil now they deserved it "
roberto dimas For what he said, a hive mind. You know, the way that people will dogpile on one another on the internet, or do a stupid stunt to attain meme status and then have a million copycats do the same thing, like planking and eating fucking tide pods?
that's not what a hive mind is. A hive mind is more like a collective intelligence, like a large group of people who all have similar thought process. The metaphor is that bees represent a hive mind because all the bees function together and are "hard wired" (for lack of a better word) to sustain the hive. The bees are like the thousands of people on social media all rooting for someone's death. You can imagine the bees as the people because they both cause the death of the individual.
Every time I finish an episode of Black Mirror, I watch Harry’s analysis of it. All his videos explain what happened beautifully and also give insights to things I would have never known upon watching the video. Hope to see more vids for Season 4! Much love from Hawaii 🤙🏾
The ending made me smile. I hate when celebrities or other people gets called out for something they did wrong, by thousands of people who do something equally wrong each day. People are quick to point fingers at others and disregard their own faults.
This episode reminds me a lot of Death Note, only with the focus being on the investigation rather than the killer. 10:12 is a pretty good summation of why: just like Light Yagami, Garrett Scholes discovered a means by which to anonymously kill thousands of people, and he used that power to punish those he deemed evil.
PokemonTom09 nitpik probs didn't even get death note, probably claiming the death note is unrealistic ... When this episode is truly futurist and totally will happen...being into bees, it truly scares me that bees are dying..
+Hanniffy Dinn Something isn't good just because it has futurist ideas, it's how it applies and explores those ideas. Hated in the Nation has only a handful and stays at the surface level which is not how Black Mirror usually operates not at all. It's not bad but compared to the series' heights it's barely anything worth nothing. Dying wildlife, cybernetics and surveillance aren't anything new or special and this episode did nothing to make the viewer really evaluate their thoughts on the matter.
I thought this too!!! I loved Death Note, although the crimes that Light punished people were (at least to start off with) much more significant (murderers, rapists) than the people in this Black Mirror episode using the #DeathTo hashtag. But perhaps this episode intends to liken this severe judgement of strangers to serious crimes. Definitely a fascinating and thrilling episode - I won't be able to sleep now!
To people who liked this episode, I can recommend the book 'So You've been Publicly Shamed' by Jon Ronson - it is all about shaming on the internet and the trauma it can cause in people's lives. Twitter is a scary place

What are they doing with them? This is the classic nervous tick of someone bullied, someone in distress. If you look at Butters from South Park, he does the same thing. If you look at every single child bullied into suicide, you'll probably also see the same thing. The columnist and Tusk were magnets for controversy. They had absolutely no problem being notorious in the public eye and stirring sh*t up. In fact, they relished it. One could even say it was part of their job description. But the third victim was just a random woman caught goofing in front of a statue which she likely didn't even realize the significance of. She was not prepared for the internet lynch mob, neither physically, not mentally. This is my FAVORITE episode in that it ENCOMPASSES all the other episodes. All episodes were to some degree critical of a digital mob mentality, but in this episode it all comes together. The internet lynch mob is a horrible and insufferable part of modern digital existence. The dark impulse to hurt and the self-righteous justification work in perfect tandem to destroy whatever empathy someone in the mob has for the victim. Apologizing doesn't help, it just emboldens the mob. Fighting back doesn't help. Not only is it one against many, but the many have the luxury of relative anonymity. But this is nothing new... this has been going on SINCE THE BEGINNING OF HUMANITY. Lynching is such a strong impulse. For eons, banishment from the tribe and blood sacrifice was employed. And here is the most depressing message of this episode... Even when someone came along to POINT BLANK expose and punish those who would bring death to others, even when the toll of this was so immense that one would think this would be a cautionary lesson that would last for ages... even then... PEOPLE WENT RIGHT BACK TO DOING IT! It is THAT ingrained in all of us. Which brings me back to the hands. Just the detective's reactions on a ''relatively sympathetic'' hearing is all that one needs to infer that the detective became the scapegoat in the public eye for the incident. That she was, despite being wholly innocent, blamed for all those deaths. That she will never again enjoy a free day in the sunshine without scores of body guards. And that the military guy actually responsible got off Scott free. It's never the powerful person that ends up being the scapegoat.
At the end I was almost shaking because it is so tense and frightening. Charlie Brooker said for each season they are trying to create a ‘film festival’ with each episode having a different genre - this one is definitely a classic brilliant investigation themed episode -love it!

I really like this episode but couldn't help but noticed its shift in narrative format comparing to other episodes. It's more of cat and mouse police drama other than the usual singular focus on how new techs change day to day lives and also mess with people. The episode gives a rare middle ground for Black Mirror that a person is behind the whole thing rather than the technology itself being the antagonist which is probably why some people having problems with it.
isn't it the point of black mirror to show that technology is never the "bad guy"? it's always been just a tool that augments the good and bad of human nature, and this series merely imagines what might happen if society decides not to rein in the unsavoury applications
Maybe I should specify. What I mean is that in usual Black Mirror episodes, the technology tabs into people's primal needs that silently alters the mentalities of the society as a whole. In this episode, the bee tech hasn't really got to that level. It's only a mcguffin in the story to get to the real life impact of social media. The backbone of the narrative is noticeably different.
Yeah, actually, I commented elsewhere in this section to counter a guy who thought that this episode was realistic... "in how the mastermind's a psychopathic ideologue with a double standard & a God complex, and the ability to 'hack' bee bots to *dig through flesh and bone TOWARDS A SPECIFIC PART OF THE HUMAN BRAIN* ???", is what I basically said to him, minus the part is CAPS... ...But that made me also say to him that those parts were the worst aspects of this episode; the least "realistic", "believable" and "thought-out"/"reflective" or "mature", like the idea of bee bots and the (basic/cookie-cutter) commentary on modern Twitter culture And it's a flaw and kind of ludicrous thing that you just don't see elsewhere in the show. The person behind those crimes against humanity is a single individual "masterplan" kind of guy (so already it's a big step towards fantasy, James Bond and comic book goofiness; there are ways to compensate for the cringe of that aberrant scenario, like with Batman, a guy who dresses as a Bat to fight crime with no guns and a lot of money, but they didn't do that here). He's no organization, and he's not a system. He's actually USING the society's system against itself, and its own intentions, and he's an outsider to the society that he terrorizes.
I really love these deep dives into TV shows and your Black Mirror analysis videos are amazing and I would love to see more videos like this. I can’t wait for your analysis of season four, it looks like it’s going to be another great season. Are you going to analyse more Doctor Who episodes? I’d love to see your take on older Doctor Who as they are some of my favourite videos of yours and I’d like to see your thoughts on the upcoming Christmas special when it comes out.
Natasha Whatmore I’ve never watched Doctor Who but love Black Mirror, TTZ, Inside No.9 etc. But I never watched Doctor Who for some reason. Is it like black mirror and the other series? Could I just jump in on the latest seasons or should I try and watch from a particular point? Thanks!
27dollars - Progressive Speeches Awesome thank you! But is the show like black mirror and twilight zone or is it just something completely different? I never knew exactly what Doctor Who did besides telephone booth tardis I think they call it and I thought he sold mysteries or some shit LOL Again thank you!
Jr Dennison Doctor Who is a sci-fi show about a time traveler in a police box with his companions as they travel through time and space and they encounter many aliens and historical figures. It’s defiantly more lighthearted and comedic than Black Mirror but still a really good show, especially the earlier seasons with Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant. Doctor Who’s more sci-fi with some thriller/horror elements as opposed to the more psychological thriller and horror of Black Mirror. Plus Doctor Who is more of a family show, as Black Mirror is for older audiences, and they can’t really get into really gory stuff or fucked up themes like Black Mirror can. There’s still some creepy episodes of Doctor Who, my favourites being Blink and The Empty Child. The whole show (from 2005) is on Netflix, and it’s a great show!
Its funny how humans think playing God is making them more compassionate and Just but they just reval for themselves to be more cruel and short sighted than God....
I loved this episode so much. The production quality was superb and it felt like a feature length film set in the Black Mirror universe. The ending was disturbing as hell and made the whole thing seem like it was for nothing, but the reveal at the end was a really good addition.
This is easily one of the best episodes. Top 3 for me. Love how in depth you go and can't wait until you continue to do so with season 4. Also surprised you didn't pick up on Blue cracking the case from white bear.
5:01 it already exists, it's on Android devices a technology called NFC scanning On the Android phones, people can exchange their phone numbers by putting their phones in close proximity (i.e. touching)
One thing that gets me about the bees is like... if the ADI or whatever we call them get released, what's stopping birds and other animals from trying to eat these drones?
I really liked this episode, it was so detailed and had the air of realism. The police investigation was very well thought out, I liked that the ditzy hacker cop was actually good at hacking and not just mashing buttons to make green numbers flash. It's a terrifying warning about our increasing reliance on hackable systems, no information system is unhackable.
I was so happy to see this in my recommended!! I'd watched all your previous Black Mirror analyses (over finals season lol) and I was extremely excited to hear your take on this episode. I personally consider this to be one of their most well-executed and engaging episodes (not a super popular opinion but hey, I like what I like) and I'm really glad you touched on the claustrophobic framing (TannerPrice put out a really good visual analysis of this ep's cinematography that you should also check out if you're interested). Great work as always! Can't wait to see your takes on series 4 :)
This analysis leaves out so much... surely this needed more commentary on the theme of "consequences"? Garrett Scholes' orchestrating this elaborate plan to seek vengeance on the demographic of people who drove his love interest to near-suicide?
By the time this was on the table the damage was already done. The chancellor proposed that when his life was on the line, but it was pointed out to him that action would guaranteed his death because he already had the highest "deathTo" votes
@@MrSidney9 my point was that banning it would prevent anymore people from using the hashtag. Sure à lot of people would still die anyway but 100 citizens getting murdered is better than 101 citizens getting murdered. (I know the death count was 387,000 but I was making a metaphor)
one of my favourites and definitely my favourite of season 3. Felt like the most 'black mirror' of the bunch, and was far more relevant to current society than any other
Interesting to hear two opposing reviews. I did like the episode, but I can see both sides. I do think there were more worthy episodes to spend the 90 minute special on.
Have you noticed that news about Shou Saito's gaming system on the news ticker as Garrett Schole watches the trial? It was written in Spanish/Mexican language, but the key words are there. "Juego" & "Nuevo Sistema", which meant "New Game System". He might have finished polishing the game system which apparently killed Cooper during its development.
Funfact: The pug guy later joined UKIP. A party with lets say mixed positions on race and for example the holocaust (Nigel Farage left the party because of alleged extremism). Maybe, just maybe the judge wasnt quite wrong.
I have faith in humanity. This episode made me think that if this episode was happening today a lot of people would write: nobody. We are better than this
On solar powered robobees - real honey bees can't fly on cloudy days or at night anyway, as bee navigation relies on the sun. Provided that they could be powered automatically in the hives, solar power would emulate the real behaviour of bees
I think part of the problem is how people complain about the rules of software they use, but choose to use it anyway because they assume its something they deserve to have without any consequences.

...But that made me also say to him that those parts were the worst aspects of this episode; the least "realistic", "believable" and "thought-out"/"reflective" or "mature", like the idea of bee bots and the (basic/cookie-cutter) commentary on modern Twitter culture
And it's a flaw and kind of ludicrous thing that you just don't see elsewhere in the show.
I actually loved this episode! Beautifully acted, filmed and animated! The robot bees looked so real in their movement!
Gonna review Xmas special, no plans for any more after that currently.

I’ve never watched Doctor Who but love Black Mirror, TTZ, Inside No.9 etc. But I never watched Doctor Who for some reason. Is it like black mirror and the other series? Could I just jump in on the latest seasons or should I try and watch from a particular point? Thanks!
27dollars - Progressive Speeches
Awesome thank you!

Thank you! You rock! I’ll watch and report back to you guys and I will let you know what I thought. Happy holidays!
Its funny how humans think playing God is making them more compassionate and Just but they just reval for themselves to be more cruel and short sighted than God....
No one is more cruel and short sighted than god
@@Cyba_IT god who?
Yeah by coming on earth and humiliating himself so that he can die for your sins so that you don’t have to perish he is cruel.
Cyba IT Yeah by coming on earth and humiliating himself and being tortured so that you don’t have to die somehow makes him cruel
reminds me of death note, but more realistic, and different situations
I mean, just shut twitter down
no for real, it kinda ruined the ending for me that the hacker didn't get away, would be much darker.
I feel like this episode is underrated! It was one of the favourite episodes.
I watched the episode and immediately watched this, and seeing the stock footage of the bees made my skin crawl...
This is one of my fave episodes and it's such a shame that it's so underrated.
I shudder to think what could happen to James Charles if this was real.
5:01 it already exists, it's on Android devices a technology called NFC scanning
On the Android phones, people can exchange their phone numbers by putting their phones in close proximity (i.e. touching)
zer0 exactly
I've recently found you and already fallen in love with your channel and binged soo much. Keep up the good work 🙂
One thing that gets me about the bees is like... if the ADI or whatever we call them get released, what's stopping birds and other animals from trying to eat these drones?
I really liked this episode. It got me hooked in the first scene, and the twist was fucking depressing, as always. xD
Great dissection of a great episode
I really liked this episode, it was so detailed and had the air of realism. The police investigation was very well thought out, I liked that the ditzy hacker cop was actually good at hacking and not just mashing buttons to make green numbers flash. It's a terrifying warning about our increasing reliance on hackable systems, no information system is unhackable.
This is like a more tame version of cancelled parties on twitter
More tame
@@twoguyskissingpng what are cancelled parties
Bumblebees have offically been added to the endangered species list.
I actually thought it was blue
AHarice Same, I wasn’t comfortable with her at all !
Yehh same
She was just super intense on her hunches. I actually really liked her.
@@dunya28 same! she acted all know person like she seemed suspicious
I love how whilst you were discussing about the bees, *”Flight of The Bumblebee”* just started playing in the background. *Very radical.*
This episode is very relevant to cancel culture nowadays
Unironically, i wonder if bee suits would protect them?
You're such a talented person. You explained the episode's very well. I wish your channel grows fast.
Haha I've been thinking this is still missing and well.. there it is.
Great timing.
NOT THE BEES
Around 9:42 or something I saw a "Death To Skillane" hashtag I hadn't noticed before
This analysis leaves out so much... surely this needed more commentary on the theme of "consequences"? Garrett Scholes' orchestrating this elaborate plan to seek vengeance on the demographic of people who drove his love interest to near-suicide?
its incredible and also scary how REAL some of this already is, without us even knowing!!!
My question during this was, couldn't Twitter and other social media apps just ban those two words in that order on the platform?
By the time this was on the table the damage was already done. The chancellor proposed that when his life was on the line, but it was pointed out to him that action would guaranteed his death because he already had the highest "deathTo" votes
@@MrSidney9 sure but still. They could have prevented a few more lives from any last minute tweets.
@@starmic1852 Then the next person with the highest deathTo votes would get killed, then the next highest and so on.
@@MrSidney9 my point was that banning it would prevent anymore people from using the hashtag. Sure à lot of people would still die anyway but 100 citizens getting murdered is better than 101 citizens getting murdered. (I know the death count was 387,000 but I was making a metaphor)
@@starmic1852ok I see your point. I'm sure if they knew that the long game was to kill thousands of people they would have done that.
Love your videos. Your analysis really opens up an episode. Cannot wait for season 4 and your take on that too!
4:49 this actually scared me sm watching in 2023 because this is a reality already
Harry, get your moving castle on to series 4 asap rocky!! You're gonna love it!!
i can't read this lol. because of asap rocky hahaha if u know what i mean.
one of my favourites and definitely my favourite of season 3. Felt like the most 'black mirror' of the bunch, and was far more relevant to current society than any other
this is my absolute favorite episode of Black Mirror
I remember being a kid when the whole "Africanized bees" story came out. it taught me a lot about the media and society at a young age.
I honestly thought the camera cut off the character because there wasn't enough room in the bathroom for the camera crew hahaha
I love the subtle sprinkle of action/thriller in the end.
Interesting to hear two opposing reviews. I did like the episode, but I can see both sides. I do think there were more worthy episodes to spend the 90 minute special on.
One of my favorite episodes
I would love to watch an analysis about American Psycho from you
Wilson me too that would be awesomr
Great job! I enjoyed all off your black mirror analysis
Honestly one of my favorite episodes, thank you for this video 👌🏾
Cant wait for Dec 29 for season 4 and your eventual S4 analysis
Best episode for me so far (I'm still on Season 3).
This was my favorite episode
The bees are going home because they have sensed the daleks presence
Cian A O T what the fuck did you just call me?
New episodes up I'm looking forward to the reviews
this episode felt like a movie and it was awesome
5:04 No shot, but Apple just announced a feature exactly like this for swapping details for the iPhones.
This definitely on my top-list favorite black mirror episode..This is haunting and mindblowing episode.
5:07. EYYYYYY FLIGHT OF THE BUMBLEBEES
I like the music when the bees were finally going to kill all those people. The music adds a eerie and consequential theme to that part to me.
We are better than this
This is phenomenal! I'm subbing! Keep it up, man!
On solar powered robobees - real honey bees can't fly on cloudy days or at night anyway, as bee navigation relies on the sun. Provided that they could be powered automatically in the hives, solar power would emulate the real behaviour of bees
They also use memory, so any known food sources can still be reached at times when the sun isnt visible
Nice touch that a buzzfeed article was featured in this episode with the focus on bees
Can't wait to see your analysis of the new season
I think part of the problem is how people complain about the rules of software they use, but choose to use it anyway because they assume its something they deserve to have without any consequences.
Garrett would have some interesting conversations on life with Light Yagami
This episode reminded me of the Wicker Man with Nicholas Cage
Absolutely love your videos!
This episode felt like a movie. If it was i would defo watch it. One my Of favourite episodes 😍
This episode is one of my top favorites! Way scarier than Nosedive!
Love the music choice for the bee bit, Flight of the Bumblebee nice
Love your videos. Merry Christmas 😘
