I have been studying philosophy since 3:00 a.m. this morning and now this. I LOVE YOUR DOCUMENTARIES. JAPAN. Tokugawa leyasu- 1543, Japan 's greatest shogun. ♥️ OKAY, let's go.
To think my first real look at Ieyasu was "Japanese Dani DeVito with a big ass flame spouting spearcannon" in Samurai Warriors. It blew my mind when i found out the names belonged to real people, and how they'd shaped Japan's history. Bit disappointed he didn't have the spear cannon in real life tho.
I got interested on Tokugawa Ieyasu because my favorite Japanese actor, Matsumoto Jun is portraying him in a taiga (historical) drama about Ieyasu's life next year January 2023.
@@AndrewsHere132 I've watched some of the episodes but not all as it aired for 11 months (January to December 2023) and I was busy with school last year, but I can say that he portrayed Ieyasu well, from the weak imprisoned boy to one of the greatest shogun's in Japan's history, it also highlighted his military achievements like winning in wars, but also his family life with his first wife to his concubines, also with his children.
@@KhangNguyen-yk2rk They also highlighted how he allowed his first wife and son to be executed, I'm not really sure if he really loves his first wife cause in the drama, he is shown crying while hugging her body
@@MalikF15there was a difference, though: in the Roman Empire, such "names" weren't actually names, but more like nicknames that a person was gaining/associated with; in Japan (but also, in China, and other Asian countries/societies), people were becoming known by different names based/depending on the stage/where they were in their lives (e.g. you had to be known by a different name once you became an adult; you had to change your infant/childhood name).
Tokugawa, was a ruthless and incredibly intelligent man. He put a stranglehold on Japan unlike anyone. Nobunaga might've been the first man to subdue all of Japan but his carelessness kept him from holding on to the country for too long. Tokugawa sealed his control of Japan in a way that really proves how powerful 1 man can be.
tokugawa didn’t submit to hideyoshi until 1586, 2 yrs after komaki nagakute, in that period after there was alot of tension as hideyoshi repeatedly tried to make ieyasu submit but no avail, it wasn’t until hideyoshi sent ieyasu his sister as a wife & his mother as a hostage that ieyasu took the trip to osaka and formally submitted
also hideyoshi didn’t just give ieyasu 5 provinces, oda gave ieyasu one after the defeat of the takeda, & during the tensho jingo conflict which was a free for all in regards to the recently acquired takeda lands following nobunaga’s death in 1582, ieyasu gained an additional 2 provinces through his own merit
Whoever wrote the entire script has done very little research on facts, usually what happened when Biographic does Asian figures. So many errors that I stop caring...
I honestly respect him so much, he was a mastermind. He was betrayed by his own father and raised by his family’s enemies. He waited, learnt from other people’s mistakes and played his cards at just the right time. By far a more interesting character than the ones who only knew how to win wars.
My only complaint with this video is the inconsistency between individual and clan names. It’s consistently Tokugawa (clan) and Nobunaga (individual) for Tokugawa Ieyasu and Oda Nobunaga, but then Toyotomi Hideyoshi is called by both his individual and clan names. It’s just a lot more difficult to keep everyone straight when they aren’t all using the same sort of short name consistently. I do appreciate sticking with their names from only one point in their life, though. That does make it easier, but consistency would simplify it further.
To be fair, Hideyoshi's invasion of Korea went very well when it was on dry land, at least at first. Unfortunately for him, Korea did have one ace up its sleeve - an admiral whose brilliance was so great that *Nelson,* the man who was quite possibly the finest admiral Europe has ever seen, was impressed by his exploits. Seriously, if you haven't heard the story of Admiral Yi's life, do yourself a favour and track down a good telling of it. It's quite the story. Korea's survival isn't solely thanks to Admiral Yi - their alliance with China eventually sealed the fate of forces left on land, and the Korean civilians formed guerilla resistance units to further disrupt things....but Admiral Yi definitely played a big part in things.
Brilliant Toyotomi hideyoshi easily overran Joseon with foot soldiers, the Korean generals were soundly defeated and woeful but when they heard that the man the myth the legend Yi sun shin was holding out, they began to join him It was a beautiful tactics so that they focus solely on sea while the guerilla resistance forces led by prince gwanghaegun and gen hong the blood General will focus on dampening the Japanese army’s spirit The heavens were just on Admiral Yi side
There is a poem that sums up the characters of these three men. It goes something like this: If the little cuckoo wont sing,…I’ll kill it! -Oda Nobunaga If the little cuckoo wont sing,…I’ll make it want to sing! -Toyotomi Hideyoshi If the little cuckoo wont sing,…I’ll wait for it to sing! -Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Oda never claimed the title Shogun. He was too busy with the warrior monks in Mt. Hiei near Kyoto that posed a threat to him. Well, that and he was trying to mount an invasion on Uesugi controlled lands. After that massacre, Honnoji happened. Hideyoshi was never considered as Shogun, he wasn't if noble samurai blood.
