  • One of our favorite things to do in a country is hit the streets and try all of the local foods. We ate some food here that was amazing, and we hope you enjoy.

Actually it's a very typical decoration in Costa Rica. Nothing to do with Halloween. These are called Cimarronas.

Yes that is right also called Mascaradas and this is Costa Rican tradition!

Yes, and cimarronas comes from the indigenous tradition "fiesta de los diablos"

Those are not limes but rangpur or limon-mandarina a mix between a tangerine and a lemon. We use those in costa rica for everything

The "orange lime" is called "limón mandarina" known as "rangpur lime" in english, it is an hibrid between an lime and a tangerine, super common in CR, is not as sour as a green regular lime, but is not sweet either.
Also the "untraditional" adorments are part of the Costa Rica tradition, they are called "mascaradas", when ever ther is big comunal celebration there are "mascaradas" wjich is basicaly a parede where people wearing this costumes/masks dance along a "cimarrona" which is a band.

I miss Costa Rica, when I was returning home to Canada, I had to take a connector flight and land in Washington, when I landed in Washington to go to Canada they asked how long I was staying in Canada for 🤣 they must’ve asked this because I’m native Canadian and I looked really tanned and Costa Rican that day 🤣 told them I live there and that was it.. my thick Canadian accent saved me

As a first generation Costa Rican American I’m always fascinated to see the views of travelers to their experiences in Costa Rica. Great video. You have to try “Los Párales bar and restaurant” which is a great neighborhood spot in Curridabat, a San Jose suburb. It’s a great glimpse of a traditional Costa Rican restaurant in a typical Costa Rican neighborhood. Also you should try Barrio Escalante which is the epicenter for Costa Rican cuisine.

Nice video. Hope you had an amazing time in Costa Rica. As Costa Rican, I suggest you to visit places outside of San Jose, the grass is greener for sure. And, you will have tons of different dishes. If you go to the coasts (either pacific or caribbean) you will fall in love of food, people and of course, beaches. Same thing happens with mountains or volcanoes. San Jose is not the best place for tourists. Trust me.

Thank you. I'm here for 27 more days and I've only gotten advice on coffee shops. Currently 1 USD is 514 Colones. A lot of Western Restaurants will start at 6,000 and go up to 15,000 .... they say mil on the monetary bills but still numbers appear to be thousands.

I have a place in Tamarindo that I’ve vacationed at about three times so far….I’ve heard alot about San Jose and really want to go there even though its about 4 hours away, but have heard negative things about it…are there any negative vibes you picked up on or any precautionary tips about San Jose?

I lived in San Jose for 15 months some years ago. It's not a pretty city, but has some nice attractions and plenty of good restaurants. The people are generally very nice. Crime is sometimes a problem though, so keep your wallets and bags secure, and when going out at night I recommend staying in groups.

What exchange rate did you use? The exchange rate when you posted the video was 1 dollar for 640 Colones. It is impossible to get that rate because banks have to make a profit and there is additional fees, so 1 dollar for 570 is probably the best that you will get. In the video the exchange rate keeps changing. For the smoothie you said it was 1800 Colones or 2.87 dollars. That is a rate of 1 dollar to 627 Colones. For the Casado you said it was 3000 Colones or 4.18 dollars. That implies a rate of 1 dollar to 717 Colones! Your total cost for all the meals are 14,200 Colones or according to you 21.91 dollars. So your average exchange rate was 1 dollar to 648 Colones. If you use what you will actually get from a bank, your total would be 24.91 dollars. More constency with the exchange rate would be much appreciated for next time.
