      I was looking for an answer as to why these elements are called transitional that is: These elements are called transition elements because they exhibit transitional behaviour between s-block and p-block elements. Their properties are transitional between highly reactive metallic elements of s-block which are ionic in nature and the elements of p-block which are covalent in nature.

      @@samirthapa6145I heard they’re called transition elements due to their variable oxidation states. I think that ties in with the explanation you’ve provided above!

      When you are describing an ion, yes. If you are referring to a compound like potassium manganate (VII), then no.

    What is meaning of oxidation state

      Su Patil oxidation state is the tempory charge on ion as a result of loss/gain of electron .
      D block elements can loose electrons from s nd d orbital ,so they show variable oxidation state as +2,+3,+4
