The Wright brother's flyer was launched from a catapault into a 20knot headwind. Their "flyer" had no choice but to fly as the box-kite was already an established working design. Pearse had a patent on the tricycle undercarriage and the aileron, which I gather he let lapse in 1910. Also his aeroplane was a monoplane. He built his own engine. Very advanced for 1903. If he got 150 yards from a self-powered take-off before crashing into a hedge, that was a revolutionary achievement. The Wright brothers, however, had better PR and of course a catapault and a 20knot headwind to get their craft airborne.
