    I just finished building it. Home Depot nor Lowes sell 4x8's. the biggest is a 4x6 or a 6x6. I used 4 4x6x8's . they also do not sell those type of brackets, look for staircase brackets, the are thicker and able to support a nice load. a nominal height of approx 24inches didn't seem tall enough so I stacked 5, 4x6 to get an approx height of 27.5" for the arm rests. The 2x8s I have higher than shown here because it seemed so low, I raised it to about 13 inches. the backrest is at an angle of 70 degrees using a speed square pivoted from the back corner of the arm rests. It's quite comfortable even without the cushions which is the only thing left I need. Hopefully my experience can help someone trying to use local home centers to get this project done. Thanks a lot for the idea!

      My Home depot sales 4x12-8ft for $34.11. These are not on the lumber isle, be sure to look by the garden area or ask more than one person at the store. Not ever employee knows where everything is.

    Just finished mine in Shou Sugi Ban. Added a small Side table with the off cut 2x8s and some drift wood beam scrap that I pulled of the beach. Looks awesome!! Adding a chair to match (easy) just measure the 2x8 to what ever cushion you'd like. I'll cut the 4x8 at 31 ish for the arms.
    4x8s are easy to find, skip the Home Center and use your local Proffesional Building supply Store.
    One thing not mentioned here is that there's no way you can drive the Lag bolts without predrilling. (Maybe if your using a corded hammer drill). I think there's better hard wear to use in place of the lag bolts. I would of used 14 inch construction grade timber screws. There a little more expensive but..
    Awesome project all the way around!!! Thanks LOVE IT !!

    Always recommend to put wood conditioner for the miniwax grey stain to absorb better and finish off with a miniwax seal coat ! 2 extra steps but make a hell of a difference

  • @888TopGear888

    To all the people that are thinking about making something like this for outside. Do not put/screw/glue the pieces of wood together BEFORE you put on some kind of protective finish.
    A stain only adds color and is great for making the grain pop out. It does not protect the wood from the elements.

    Oh what an awesome idea! Great piece! Just wanted to say that there are GRK screws up to 24" long and are use sometimes in landscaping timbers. They do not rust and are extremelt hard so you would need hard tips for the drill. The larger sizes are hex heads too! They are pricey but well worth the money.

    WARNING!! For anyone considering doing this project: 4x8 are almost impossible to find, without getting an expensive special order from a lumber store. You probably won't find it at a Lowes or Home Depot. Instead do with Brian suggested in the comments below and use 4 or 5 4x6s instead. It won't look exactly like the video, but good luck trying to find the 4x8s.
    Another hard to find item, as Brian also said, are the L brackets. The ones I was able to find are about half the length of the ones in the video or half the width, so you may want to double up and buy twice as much shown.
    Finally, know that this couch is SMALL. The average sofa seat is about 17-18 inches off the ground. this one, minus the cushions is only 10 ft off the ground. The entire couch is the height of an average seat height. Whether you use 4x8s or 4x6s, consider adding more than 2 feet worth, unless this is for children.

      Bipin Chandra Pal Gadi Home Depot has the L brackets like he’s using. At least in Baton Rouge they do. The 4x8’s on the other hand is another story. The only way I could find them was from a lumber yard in cypress for either $80 or $60 each don’t remember.

    • @JosephTaibiJr

      +DIY Modern Would help if he'd given the size of lag bolts. In fact it still looked like he screwed the side pieces together instead of using actual lag bolts. Also those brackets holding the seat to the arms should be much beefier. Cool starting point!

    • @johngardiner8847
      @johngardiner8847 8 лет назад

      +Joseph Taibi Jr. The size of the "lag bolts" depend on how deep you drill through the wood.... If you drill 4" into it than 8" lag bolt is a very secure bet

He also made the garment rack, the flip desk as well as the industrial piping chair. He says he wants to get online and share the photos with you lol We love watching your videos. He has built so many things for our house. Oh I forgot to mention, he also built the pendant lamp with the colored cord.
      He also made a lumbar wall with some really cool shelves that stemmed from all of the other projects. We are also gonna take a stab at the concrete fire pit for our backyard. Thanks again for your site.

    Hello, wonderfull proyect there Thanks for sharing. Im planning on building this and have a couple of questions. First Im bulding this for an the inside is there anything in particular that can change the theme from outside or inside? What are the parameter that determine this.
    Second: Are the 2x4 Strong enough to not need any middle support to carry on the weight of three full size adults sitting on it.
    Thanks,

    • @leroytobias
      @leroytobias 6 лет назад +1

      what is your suggestion for support?

    • @m.a.4829
      @m.a.4829 6 лет назад +31

      Aaron Cauraugh I think he's right, and I would suggest an identical 4'x 8' cut to 32" like the 3 pieces used to make the edges. Just place it right in the center and screw galvanized screws from the planks into it. That will keep the boards from bending in the middle.

    • @Moneygrp
      @Moneygrp 6 лет назад +6

      Aaron Cauraugh you can add a smaller strip of wood and screw it to the back support then screw it to the middle wood. That’s how I would do it so that I won’t have to have a block in the middle roughing the ground.

    God, I love the minimalist design. I wish this is how these shops would sell... but as indoor sofa. It seems there is no way around learning to work with wood. If you want a couch in this minimalist style in Germany, you'd pay at least 1000€... probably just because of the design, because it looks special. It's nuts.
