After the crash of Swissair 111 the investigation team had to pay $200,000 a day to rent an underwater vacuum cleaner to pick up all the parts, and that was 10 years before this episode aired. I suspect it ended up costing him more than he planned to extract all these materials.
looking for scattered pieces across the ocean floor is different to going to a known location & shipwreck though, theres less searching and just pure vacuuming
Most of that rent comes from the logistics of transporting the vacuum to and from the shipwreck. It's not much more expensive to rent it for a whole week instead.
That’s a very high risk of no return when salvaging lost treasure. The costs just to get started is crazy expensive and that doesn’t even include other risks that could happen while trying to get the treasure.
Has nothing to do with doubt. You don't risk ALL your money. Even if you're 99-100% sure about it. That's like Mark knowing there is 99% chance he is right in making money on something, and spending ALL his wealth because that's required to get it started. Even with it being so probable, it isn't worth the risk, however small. Is this more than 99% chance? Sure. But the concept applies.
This is like a childhood fantasy I had when I was a kid thinking what it was like to be an adult. Just pitching the idea of exploring this old shipwreck for booty to a group of multi-millionaires
So he basically said he has all the money he needs in his retirement fund to do this himself. Why wouldn’t he unless there’s risk he’s not talking about.
It's a typical bait ! Once they lend the money the operation cost will just inflate beyond their imagination.. they will make all sorts of BS to extend the operation time.
Kevin blows my mind with how much knowledge he has in various fields. I really wasn't expecting him to have any clue about what this guy's salvage operations entail.
Just off the coast of Alaska isn't a very good location to start with, that is where the show the deadest catch is filmed. Also when asked how he knows it is all still there, the answer 'where else would it go?' isn't very satisfactory.
That was interesting. Realistically, the logistics+ challenges in that situation can be insurmountable. So many things can go wrong; bad weather, unforseen hazards, equipment failure, he himself said the under currents there were really strong. With Shark Tank its usually about Product, and Product always deals w/the innovation of civilians needs + psychological interests of the population. Civilian Needs+Psychological Interest are a PEOPLE thing. With THIS it's not people; its the Physical World. You're taking a risk on engaging with the Physical World- carrying the weight of the Ore up to the surface, Low visibility, Hydraulics, temperature of the water, ACTUAL Sharks he mentioned (ironic), and most of all...the very Ocean itself: The most formidible of challenges! That's what made this particular one interesting. It was a fish out of water so to speak, instead of the typical People Factor this was the obstacle of real Physics.
Yeah heres whats gonna happen, hes gonna take the 250k put 100k in his pocket and take you for a little ride in his cute boat and show you his cute equipment and in the end you'll find a few rocks and start realizing you just gave away 250k for nothing
Lol exactly! I was thinking, “why he looking for an investor to give away the profits if he knows this is sure thing?” Surely, he can get a bank loan, as he knows the treasure is there for taking, and he can keep 100% of the profits.
If he’d like to go too jail then yeah, or get sued too oblivion. I would think the sharks have amazing lawyers that ensure they can’t just run away with the money
Basically, yes. He's proposing a very short-term with high risks investments, with only a 20% return to the investor. While I really like the guy and how he presented his stuff, it's no wonder that they passed on this one, the reward isn't worth the risk.
How does no one know what smelted means. It doesn't mean it's denser. Smelted is to extract metal from its ore by a process involving heating and melting. Goes to show you just because you have money doesn't mean your educated.

After the crash of Swissair 111 the investigation team had to pay $200,000 a day to rent an underwater vacuum cleaner to pick up all the parts, and that was 10 years before this episode aired. I suspect it ended up costing him more than he planned to extract all these materials.
He didn't want to RENT one though.
looking for scattered pieces across the ocean floor is different to going to a known location & shipwreck though, theres less searching and just pure vacuuming
Totally. Super risky investment
There's a reason he hasn't pulled his retirement $. Even HE doubts it.
Sure. But the concept applies.
you gotta love the cameraman, he knows exactly when to zoon on barbara making sarcastic faces !! 🤣
Why even go here why not get a loan. Too many holes i wouldn't invest.
7:04, Kevin is like, look, I've already done it.
This is like a childhood fantasy I had when I was a kid thinking what it was like to be an adult. Just pitching the idea of exploring this old shipwreck for booty to a group of multi-millionaires
"My name is Barbara... I don't trust you, and you look goofy. For those reasons, I'm out."
Walter White
Nobody wants to admit it but I'm starting to sense that Kevin might just be the "Chuck Norris" of investing/entrepreneurship lol
I love how Kevin mentions the real reason that nobody would ever go after the metal, after the guy leaves lol
He has the Voice, but he should have dressed up as Captain Jack Sparrow.
Hahaba
Guy walks in:
Barbra: I'm out
Robert is such a sweet guy
So he basically said he has all the money he needs in his retirement fund to do this himself. Why wouldn’t he unless there’s risk he’s not talking about.
Because he knows it’s going to cost more than half a million dollars to bring the treasure up.
its most likely going to cost more than that and what is he going to do if he needs money?
Because you don't risk ALL the money you have?
I hope someone else manages your money for you based on your statement.
It's a typical bait ! Once they lend the money the operation cost will just inflate beyond their imagination.. they will make all sorts of BS to extend the operation time.
"I'm not turned on enough by those rocks, and for that reason I'm out." Wtf Barbara 🤣
Kevin blows my mind with how much knowledge he has in various fields. I really wasn't expecting him to have any clue about what this guy's salvage operations entail.
I’d love to see an update on this guy. Just curious if he ever did it and if so how much it cost/profit made.
Bump
He’s still trying
@Aidren Karmona you joking? Whered you hear this
@Aidren Karmona He pulled it outta his ass
@Aidren Karmona I don’t know why I laughed so hard to this
I respect how these earlier episodes the sharks still had the ability to treat delusions seriously
This guy is fun to listen to. The way he got pumped up over the pirate call seemed refreshingly genuine.
Might’ve taken a while, I would’ve done it by hand. Slowly accumulating enough money to do a full investigation of digging up the ores myself.
And don't care about the real sharks within the place?
@@herbertdonermaier7459 No Fear
Did he ever use his half million retirement fund to bring up the treasure?
I wonder as well
Yes! Now his net worth is 200billion dollars and changed name to elon musk!
@@DM-lm5lw and got younger
@@user-sq7rc8hr2u he just got the new IOS update
He ended up actually getting the Ore. it was sold for just over 5.1 million and cost around $650k to mine/move.
"Yeah. Sharks! The real ones" 😂😂😂
Barbara: "The idea of going miles under water doesn't get me wet enough, so for that... I'm out."
I don't know what smelting is and I expected your treasure to look like it does in cartoons. For that reason, I'm out.
I was really expecting them to say April Fools at the end.
Barbara: I am only into muff diving and, for that reason, I am out.
Hahahaha
Barbara: I don’t like the rocks, and because of that, I’m out.
00:48 hahaha...daymond
I'm Barbara..and for that reason .."I'm Out"
In 2019 he salvaged the ore and sold for 4.8 million, hes my auntie!
Barbara: “these are rocks, and I’m not feeling sexy time. I’m out.”
6:09 when has that ever stopped you before?
Yeah heres whats gonna happen, hes gonna take the 250k put 100k in his pocket and take you for a little ride in his cute boat and show you his cute equipment and in the end you'll find a few rocks and start realizing you just gave away 250k for nothing
Lol exactly! I was thinking, “why he looking for an investor to give away the profits if he knows this is sure thing?”
Surely, he can get a bank loan, as he knows the treasure is there for taking, and he can keep 100% of the profits.
If he’d like to go too jail then yeah, or get sued too oblivion. I would think the sharks have amazing lawyers that ensure they can’t just run away with the money
They can’t sue over a failed business that they invested in lol
That could have been a car in the hudson river lol xD
-ARRR!
-That’s right
😂😂😂
Is it true that if you smelted you dealted?
What a nice guy. Still asked Daymond to just come and go Diving.
As soon as he pulls the treasure up some country will claim it!
this guy was really unique, i don't think anyone else like this guy on the show
I'm Barbara, and for that reason. I'm out.
- Barbara
This is the most interesting shark tank episode I've ever seen
Wait so is he just there to sell his ore, not an actual business?
Basically, yes. He's proposing a very short-term with high risks investments, with only a 20% return to the investor. While I really like the guy and how he presented his stuff, it's no wonder that they passed on this one, the reward isn't worth the risk.
He should clearly go with a bank loan. Why is he giving up profits and equity if he knows this is sure thing in his eyes?
Something doesn’t add up.
How does no one know what smelted means. It doesn't mean it's denser. Smelted is to extract metal from its ore by a process involving heating and melting. Goes to show you just because you have money doesn't mean your educated.
Seems Mark doesn't know his business very well.
Robert tells Mark he could take his mineral rights to a bigger salvage company and sell the rights.
Mark's reply, "I hadn't thought of that."
