Every concert film director and crew could take lessons from this. We don't need a million edits or a million cameras. Capture the band, and capture good sound. That's it. Your job is done. This is how it should be.
My brother passed away this month. His fav song (-: sing fitting his mane is Nigel and had brain damage epilepsy in the 70s professionals had no idea. ..this song is so fitting thanks. We were born in England
I remember a quote, probably from Andy, saying that it's a simple drum beat played on the wrong drums and that it's inspired by DEVO's cover of the Stones' "Satisfaction." That said, it's one of my favorite drum parts and it just sounds like it fits the song like a well oiled machine.
@@LuisRamirez-ex6yy I love this, I was 9 when it came out and remember my parents (who I thought were old but were 35 at the time) being WELL aware of this song...just their slightly grudging acknowledgment was a recognition that there was something a little special here. It was just a great time and as kids growing up on these songs we had a fantastic time. I just wish I could get it back. My 8 year old daughter suddenly starting singing it randomly which gives me joy.
I was born in the 80s but a big fan of lots of other great bands/music from then, thanks to my somewhat older husband for introducing me to actually good music. XTC would come up on my Spotify for a long time now and I tended to skip, but something last week made me really stop and listen, then I watched the This is Pop rockumentary on here and I'm sold. Love this one.
I did! I was 9 and remember it VERY well being performed on Top of the Pops. My 8 year old daughter suddenly started singing it without prompting which was just great.
That's like asking how video from the 1930s is so good. Please stop assuming that the VCR is the end-all and be-all of video quality - we had *FAR* better quality much earlier on, on *Film,* which has a high resolution. It's just that early Film was *very* liable to degradation and fire.
@@101VoltsOk as long as you stop assuming that I am assuming anything. Obviously (old) film is a very high quality medium, but often it isn't preserved well & people don't take the care and attention to convert it to digital well, especially live music. That said, this was recorded in a TV studio so I guess I shouldn't be so surprised that it was captured expertly. I watch a lot of old live music and it is rarely this good.
are you fking kidding me? so far ahead of their time. full stop. '79 - i was 9yo. so transitionary, and possibly not as visually marketable as the police, but defo in the same league. XTC will always deserve greater recognition despite not needing it etc
Robert you silly goose. We both know that you haven’t made an attempt to explore music in 2021 so it is only logical that the surface level music of 2021 doesn’t stack up to some of your favorite songs of all time.

Absolutely agree. This was such a great live performance. So rare to find concert footage of XTC and how they actually sounded live.
It's crazy how little those big productions use the full stage shot. You know, the vantage as if you were there at the show.. lol, why use that??
So correct
plus that take of the two dancing, that is real
Amen man !
One of the best songs ever.
Yes !! ;) Always has been on my 'Top 10' list of all-time faves...

Much love to you and Nigel’s memory.

All the best from Australia
That’s so sad. Now everyone reading comments is sad
Yes Colin Moulding! Great and most underrated bass player!
Doesn't miss a beat while singing an offbeat vocal. Incredible.
Agreed!
The drum progression for this song appears to be extremely intricate.
Not that complicated but creative and immediately recognizable. Superb.
It's the Tama Drums

Who's listening in 2024 ? 😊❤🎉
Me,and lots of other people I imagine, it's a classic. Love xtc ❤
Yeahhhhhhh...!!!
@@violent_bebop9687 you're funny .
October 2024 👍🏻
Currently learning this for a new punk / post punk / new wave band.
parents: be careful

Drums and Wires is one of the best Records from the last 50 years. And its still epic - 2022
Agreed, been listening to that and nonsuch heaps lately
Complicated Game ❤️
It's great, but their best album is "Skylarking".
I’ll always say it, XtC have a new wave sound with a pop sensibility. Their songs are so catchy yet intricate.
Love the thumbs up for the stage hand that replaced the mic stand plowed over by Andy Partridge. 🤣
Drummer's smashing it!! 🤩👍👍
I've been listening to this song since the 90s from the primus cover on miscellaneous debris. It's a timeless song
This song was great in the 80s and still great in the 90s and even today it sounds like it could be from any pop band.
Not so easy. Arcade Fire or Interpol perhaps?
@@okifurbi You are talking in riddles. I'm too old to care what your riddle is.
@@skilletpan5674 you think any pop band of today could create something as good as this , your crazy 🤪
You mad, this is the most ridiculous song, lyrics known to man. Was ridiculous then, absolutely ridiculous now
It was released in 1979
Just discovered this masterpiece
I discovered today.

@@squishmallowfan025 oohhh thats awesome!!
This concert wasn't in 1979, it was on August 8 1980. It was probably the first show of their Black Sea tour.
Totally stand-alone band. Unique. Such latent power.
Almost forgot to watch this today
Fan-bloody-tastic!! XTC are the great unsung heroes of the punk rock explosion, generally underrated and undervalued but we know - we know the fact!!
That was really quite excellent
Superbe performance
Titre magnifique

Classic, original, better than most of today's rock music.
holy crap!! i almost believe that was pete doherty :)
Ahh, memories!
It’s been said that God gave us XTC because the Beatles broke up . Thanks God
Dear God thanks God
How is this 1979 video quality so fkn good? Seriously, not a comment, I'm actually asking.
A late reply: the original footage was cleaned up for a relatively resent broadcast.....Great song by a fantastic band by the way!
RUclips is nice for great archival footage but tbh the original PAL masters of this or top of the pops for example are MUCH better.

How to start an XTC fight: "Who's the best songwriter?" "Who's the best guitarist?" "Who is the best singer?"
andy andy andy ..... =)
I would simply answer yes. .
Colin, Dave, Colin. Who has to constantly be the center of attention? Andy.
Nigel approves!
fuck I missed out in the early 70s
how can fully see their plans now
Dude!! fuckin never knew this was a Primus COVER!!WTF!!!
So much better then the absolute shit that's played now in 2021
