@Joël Burleson Infusion turns your hp bar red, but its only an entirely cosmetic change. You just get more of the normal hp with infusion, the Hp is functionally identical otherwise.
I still think this whole "Shields aren't that good" and "OSP abuse" situation is just the symptom of a bigger issue: you don't have enough health whatsoever to deal with enemies innevitably hitting you past the 2nd loop. At that point your level ups are too slow, you don't have enough health, and you get chunked for like half your health and you die. If they removed OSP but increased overall health gains (or increased the rate at which you level up so that you don't just soft cap at level 20ish), the issues would go away I'm pretty sure. Also another fix would be to make Infusions great again. Either make it a red item that needs more kills to increase your health, thus making it slower to get to absurd health amounts but eventually you get there if you can survive, or keep it green but just buff them to like, 300 more health per stack or something. And before you think that it'd make the game too easy, or make it static (as there would be no real increase in danger) keep in mind that when you start off, enemies do about 10% of your health with an attack, more for elites and more dangerous enemies. However, later on in the run not only are there MORE elites, but just MORE enemies in general. Later on in the run enemies may deal about 15% of your total health, sure, but there's about 20 times more enemies on the screen than when you started off. This at least would make it a bit more similar to how health was in RoR 1 due to Infusions (unless you just played for 40 minutes and capped health entirely), where you seeing your health dropping wasn't an immediate "Oh shit I'm dead because I'm not abusing OSP", but instead a "Oh shit I'm getting swarmed better GTFO".
Getting two/one shot arbitrarily because I don't have a gazzillion I-frames or mobility options is kind've gay. Since you might as well not have a fucking health bar in this game.
I think the decision to take shields really depends on how much healing you have. If you are spending most of your run struggling to find healing items, it may be worth it to take transcendence or shield gens. Edit: another benefit of taking Transcendence is that is allows you to forgo healing items entirely for more damage/mobility. For instance, in a green item multishop with an ATG and a Harvester Scythe, you are able to take the ATG every time.
If you use a shield generator, it raises your overall max potential health for the aegis. Which makes going for a run that allows you to have over 30k over shield is possible if using a ton of shield gens and a single aegis
Honestly, the best runs I've had were with one instance of Shaped Glass, followed by six or seven Topaz Brooches. Killing a whole group of smaller enemies with the double damage helps to even out the halved health you'd get and make taking on the larger enemies a bit easier, at least with the Huntress.
Oh shit I thought it did do that. I was about to leave an incorrect comment about that. Good thing I scrolled down. And there goes my argument for shields xD
You can cheese the challenge for huntress with topaz brooches, which give barrier not shield or health, you just have to make sure u have lots of kills and barrier at ALL times.
Strides is to solve the problem of low health and bad positioning, the problem of threat is not a factor for its use. It's essentially a panic button for when "manning up" is about to kill you.
Woolie out here saying you've gotta text file edit to be rich in lunar coins while I'm sittin' on my fat lunar stacks from doing obliteration runs on loader/mercenary. Great video though, maybe one day shields will be more viable.
Hot take: shields should offer some amount of damage resistance (20%?) while they’re active. I think this would make shield generators slightly more attractive by compensating for their breaking of one shot protection and make transcendence more viable as a lunar item
I like using transcendence on loader and huntress because of their mobility to hide for the 7 seconds to full heal. I've also gotten around 4000hp with MUL-T with a couple stacks of transcendence, shield gens and transfusions. It's not the most optimal but it can really help in a monsoon run when you haven't been getting healing items at all.
I love your vids Woolie! Keep up the good work! These vids have really been helping me out since I’m a big dumbo brain and get too bored reading stuff. They keep me engaged and are hella entertaining 👌🥰 just started playing on Monsoon and have been hooked ever since.
How does Aegis work with transcendence? If healing still occurs, do you gain armor assuming you have full shields? Is the amount you gain relative to 1hp (so 0 armor for aegis 1-4 and 1 for aegis 5) or is it relative to your shields? Can you gain armor even without full shields?
Yes it does. For this reason I consider Aegis to be a good synergy with transcendence, to the point of only really taking transcendence IF I have Aegis. Also, armor and barrier are two different things. Armor reduces damage while barrier is the health over your health bar.
I think they're both good for certain situations but I personally like health because while it regens slower on it's own, I can usually be gaining a bunch mid combat so I don't have to worry about it too much.
For those who do want to cheese the huntress challenge and just got disappointed that shield doesn't do it, barrier doesn't count so just have 1 barrier item, and make sure to constantly keep it up.
Everything in this video is clear and makes sense to me, but there is something that you forgot that I think is really important. If you use transcendence and shield generators, then you increase how much barrier you can have. If you get an Aegis, especially if you are an engineer with a lot of mushrooms, this can be absolutely nuts and carry your run. I know you haven't found an effective playstyle that you enjoy for engineer so I think it's totally reasonable for this to have escaped you, or for you to have not known about it in general. That aside, great video as always Woolie!
I use shield generators with the command artifact with topaz borches or aiegs and leach, because you can get way more max hp with sheilds, then even more barrier with broch or aiegs
Hey woolie! Since you’re probably still in the comments, I have a couple ideas for videos you could do :) just suggestions but you’re always my first pick for ROR2 Topics! Maybe go over the categorized chests and talk about the chances of getting a good item based on their pools, or how good each one is on each character, and then rank them! I have more but I’ll put them into words and share them under your vids in the future
My favorite survivor to run around with shields is the Mercenary. With all of the i-frames available to him allows you to pseudo keep shields from dropping to low and allows them to recharge pretty easily at times. Also if you use transcendence on Rex you are a pepega.
I think that Transcendence reducing the cooldown by say 25% per stack on the recharge delay or the Shield geny's reducing the recharge rate by 5-10 seconds per stack (and give 8% of total Health Shields and increases included) would be all you need. The only thing with that would be that you would have to limit it to a 1 sec cooldown at max. Either that or they need to make it's recharge delay shortened by kill/damage to enemies with the time removed increasing per stack. With either of these methods i feel it would work out, i just want to know what other people say.
the way shields vs hp works generally in my runs is that once a transendence drops, one of us(usually me) will never pick up healing items again for future hp ups or psg drops. I usually have this going with playing Loader, as she can more often than not just gtfo from any dangerous situation when needed
I'm curious to his opinion on Transcendence now that the Plasma Shrimp exists. I personally think it's viable for Engineer, with the right item combinations like Broaches, Aegis, and Tougher Times.
Strides + Nukahana's opinion(I forget how to spell it) works well because you are healing while still dealing out damage. If you pair this with atg's then you have nukahana's attacking as well as atg's all while being invincible and healing.
The yellow shielding provided by the ageis shield (I think I got it right) and topaz brooch caps out when the shielding is the same value as your max HP, but the blue shields count as part of your max HP for the yellow shields.
It should be noted that you can use your equipment while in strides of heresy. So if you're literally Zeus you can be invincible while striking down fury on everything on your screen.
On the defense of a full-shields build, Aegis exists: -Your health is multiplied by 1.5 by transcendence and by 2 if you're at max barrier, so by 1.5 * 2 = 3 times more health in the case of having both (plus more 0.5 to that multiplier at max barrier for every transcendence after the first one) -While you have transcendence, all of your healing is overheal, so half of it becomes barrier with aegis no matter what -If you get a rejuvenation rack or another aegis on top of that, 100% of your healing becomes barrier, so you're actually healing as much as you would without those items, but with (much) more max "hp", and your barrier kinda becomes your health, with the shield serving as a backup for it, instead of the opposite (the shield being taken first, then your health) -Yeah, you need 1-2 red items to get the build going, but once it's going, you can just facetank most things and laugh at the enemies while standing still and firing at them
Trancendance in eclipse becomes pretty damn broken, given that it practically removes 3 of the modifiers effects (half healing, starting at half health, doubled and lethal fall damage) and becomes of the huge increase in max health, also reduces the effects of the eight modifier (hits above ~2.5% of health apply curse, reducing max health)
I always play with artifacts (namely command, sacrifice, and swarm) and there are times where I’ll get transcendence and farm the void to get like 50 or so shielf generators just to have like 20,000 health. It’s incredibly fun to do so! Like you said, it all depends on one’s playstyle. Gotta say, you’re videos are incredibly entertaining and I’m definitely subscribing!
I ran a multiplayer run as acrid and, being new, I was not fully competent at the game , plus we had a text file editor on the 4-man team. So what we needed up doing was stacking shields and strides in me, let me run around poisoning things, striding when I took to much damage, and basically let my teammates carry me.
I would like to see strides of heresy as you next lunar item video. The reason being is the fact you can still fire your equipment while immune to damage. Even as the engineer having strides of heresy late game and mid game is useful, even as the commando, huntress, or even the artificer. The only classes I havent had it on is rex, loader and acrid.
When you take damage with shields and barrier, do shields still recharge at the same rate? I like to take transendence on loader, but I'm bad at keeping time and dont trust myself editing the text files of the game to test it out.
I think a good buff for shields would be to have the recharge delay be reduced every time you complete a loop. The amount it reduces by would diminish and eventually stop once the delay reaches something like 4 seconds or so but that would be after loop 4 or 5.
Okay so... if I have Transcendence and I'm looking to buff those shield numbers as much as possible, I should skip out on the Shield Generators and go for things like Infusion and Bison Steak instead? Do their benefits get buffed by Transcendence's conversion?
I find that lots of health and then something that generates barrier like a topaz broach or an aegis (if I have a strong source of healing) are best because you basically double your effective health pool for minimal upkeep effort.
Shields are amazing when paired with auto-casting Jade Elephant. If you can play the game long enough to get multiple thousands of HP from transcendence and shield gen stacks, getting 500 armor on top of that makes you virtually invulnerable. And that build seems more feasible than playing engineer and getting lucky enough to find an Aegis, Rejuvenation Rack, 10+ fungus, and a bunch of infusions.
Transcendence has other enablers besides, like old war stealth kit! it still falls under the waiting playstyle, but it's still valid. And I disagree with 'nothing's changed'. Because after you heal, the situation is less sticky. You have full health, and you're invisible, and thus get to launch the first strike, probably with cooldowns refreshed by this point.
If you have transcendence the 4th stage of mithrix won't give you any items back because technically his hp doesn't drop below a certain amount. Lost a run because of that :(
Visions of Heresy are the best! I love them. Two proc chances, homing, hits and crits twice for more sythe healing. Slap a sentient meat hook, and everything on the map gets flung everywhere
I'm new to this game but imo having more HP simply means having more one shot protection even if not by the mechanic itself meaning that if u have a lot of HP and can tank a couple of hits without getting one shot that is basically like having multiple 1 shot protection innate to having a large HP pull
Hey man, just a quick question if you know. Do shields block/ reduce fire and bleed damage as well? I noticed my health goes down a lot slower, and the debuff is removed much quicker with shields. Also, do shields reduce damage against all overloading enemies? if so could you get the stats by letting Beatle boy hit you a few times plx? if the above is true wouldn't that mean that shields are really good on high agility/ movement heroes who don't get hit at all/ very often? I only really die to status effects anyway.
I find that the shield is pretty good on the engineer if you have enough mobility items. Sure, you can’t use the bustling fungus anymore, but I typically just run from the places turrets and let them aggro the enemies until I’m healed.
Some questions: Does damage from burning stop the shield regen? If you have transcendence and aegis, does the healing you get become converted to barrier regardless of your current health, or only when your shields are at full?
as a lunar coin editor (guilty- !) I can speak from experience since I grab transcendence stacks on nearly all my runs, any heal received with aegis and transcendence will give you barrier, since your max hp is one, any heal *above* one will be applied as barrier. Super nice survivability in groups of enemies if you get flat leech items, but barrier doesn't prevent shield recharging from restarting. Understandable, it'd be busted if it did, just thought it was worth a mention
qwsxedcrfv burning stops it, and Aegis always builds barrier, even having taken damage. Some testing may be needed to see If taking barrier damage (not shield) does or does not interrupt recharge
they just need to add more shield based items to make shields worth it like a shield delay down or an alternative version of corpsebloom that converts (blue) or adds (red) the ability of healing to affect shields at a reduced rate. or an item that gives a instant shield regen when you fall below a HP threshold
I think this is the way to go. I'm all in for a diverse array of viable builds. we just need to go deeper on shields in order to make them worth it. I would love to see some recharge delay down items too. however, I also think that shields could be made more helpful if: 1) they counted against OSP, so a shield would absorb a hit before you take any damage, and 2) every shield item just gave WAYYY more shields than they do now. I'm talking like 400% more. think about it: even if shields don't heal or regenerate as easily as health, you could make a better argument for taking shields if they were just so huge that you could tank through a fight and recharge after. that would make for an interesting trade-off and a new type of build. especially once you add in the shield-enhancing items.
right now, Trance doesn't bump up your max health enough to justify the trade-off. so now, imagine that you got 400% of your health as shields instead of 150%. in spite of the inherent weaknesses of shields, that might be worth it. :)
someone in the comments also mentioned a potential shield buff: make it so shields could completely negate debuffs. as long as you have 1 point of shield remaining, you can't be set on fire or electrocuted, you can't be slowed by oil, you can't be hurt by fall damage, and you're impervious to Malachite. I think that would make shields fucking awesome. :) (it's thematically appropriate, too! the logbook literally says that people use shield gens for protection from the elements. so that would be a nice touch.)
Can you do a video on the spinel tonic, I think it is a very interesting item as far as equipment goes and I’d like to hear your thoughts on it. Do you think the spinel tonic is good? Are there certain circumstances where you would avoid or take it? And as far as equipment go are there any others that are much more useful than the tonic for what it provides?
Wait, the plasma shrimp would it be very beneficial for you to have shield only since the shrimp does damage as long as you have shield? And the glass would it effect your shield hp if you have beetle already?

Shields are good if you play at long range such as “permaflight artificer”,
HP good otherwise
"With strides all you're getting is invulnerability, the ability to reposition and a heal."
Yeah, such meager positives. My moba brain is dying.
Me who has never heard of risk of rain: Can’t wait to put this info to good use
Command, Sacrifice, Horde goes Brrrr
If you use a shield generator, it raises your overall max potential health for the aegis. Which makes going for a run that allows you to have over 30k over shield is possible if using a ton of shield gens and a single aegis
okay but
may I contribute one word?
malachite.
Does the malachite debuff last longer than 7 seconds?
BOOM
Shield gang forever
@@ratsass7201 only took you, what, 6 months between thoughts? impressive.
"Who am i to tell you how to live your risk of rain 2 life anyway?" you are the guy i came to for the answer to the title of the video, my dude.
Shields would be pretty good if they could regen while only barrier was taking damage. Might be a little TOO good though.
Oh shit I thought it did do that. I was about to leave an incorrect comment about that. Good thing I scrolled down. And there goes my argument for shields xD
I wish they would buff it to be like that, osp abuse is already a thing so why not add another OP combo?
A little late but if you have cautious slugs you tehen as long as your barriers done go down, I abuse this on loader with a bunch of brooches :)
Great video though, maybe one day shields will be more viable.
yo homie thats a lot of gang shit, who needs gucci when you got lunar coins
I found it funny he makes fun of txt editing and then proceeds to clip through a wall to get to the Aqueduct elites. XD
I'd only Transcend Loader if I was going for a one punch build. I usually only use it on the Orbital Bombardment Artificer.
Hey Woolie, great video! Can't wait for the next one... I wanna see that Engineer&Visions of Heresy run just pop off!!!
I love your vids Woolie! Keep up the good work! These vids have really been helping me out since I’m a big dumbo brain and get too bored reading stuff. They keep me engaged and are hella entertaining 👌🥰 just started playing on Monsoon and have been hooked ever since.
that bruh moment when you are 1 second away from healing and you have 3 shaped glass and then a wisp comes in
Lesser Wisps are the bane of me. Lost too many runs because they kill me when before I can regen.
@@The_Minez Plus barrier has one shot protection, sheilds remove that
Barrier no longer has OSP, it used to, but not anymore
@@The_Minez Damn, still taking the brooch tho its still good
I think they're both good for certain situations but I personally like health because while it regens slower on it's own, I can usually be gaining a bunch mid combat so I don't have to worry about it too much.
Finally, been waiting for this video.
I use shield generators with the command artifact with topaz borches or aiegs and leach, because you can get way more max hp with sheilds, then even more barrier with broch or aiegs
Nowadays this video would boil down to “plasma shrimp go brr”
I can't begin to state adequately just how much I love this concept.
Bren Krasmer Your reply made my day lol
My favorite survivor to run around with shields is the Mercenary. With all of the i-frames available to him allows you to pseudo keep shields from dropping to low and allows them to recharge pretty easily at times. Also if you use transcendence on Rex you are a pepega.
Scrubs. The only real answer is BARRIER
me: *laughs in aegis shields*
Yet another vid that answers some of my questions and helps me get better thanks
In the words of Piccolo, *deep inhale* “DODGE!!!!!”
Transcendence on Loader is the most OP item in the game, change my mind
great idea
I've been loving these discussion and investigation videos lately
Strides + Nukahana's opinion(I forget how to spell it) works well because you are healing while still dealing out damage. If you pair this with atg's then you have nukahana's attacking as well as atg's all while being invincible and healing.
The yellow shielding provided by the ageis shield (I think I got it right) and topaz brooch caps out when the shielding is the same value as your max HP, but the blue shields count as part of your max HP for the yellow shields.
It should be noted that you can use your equipment while in strides of heresy. So if you're literally Zeus you can be invincible while striking down fury on everything on your screen.
great info in the video, good to at least know now that shields + transcendence isn't as nutty as you'd think it to be.
You've given me an idea transcendance and 3x strides of heresy hehe
On the defense of a full-shields build, Aegis exists:
-Your health is multiplied by 1.5 by transcendence and by 2 if you're at max barrier, so by 1.5 * 2 = 3 times more health in the case of having both (plus more 0.5 to that multiplier at max barrier for every transcendence after the first one)
-While you have transcendence, all of your healing is overheal, so half of it becomes barrier with aegis no matter what
-If you get a rejuvenation rack or another aegis on top of that, 100% of your healing becomes barrier, so you're actually healing as much as you would without those items, but with (much) more max "hp", and your barrier kinda becomes your health, with the shield serving as a backup for it, instead of the opposite (the shield being taken first, then your health)
-Yeah, you need 1-2 red items to get the build going, but once it's going, you can just facetank most things and laugh at the enemies while standing still and firing at them
Trancendance in eclipse becomes pretty damn broken, given that it practically removes 3 of the modifiers effects (half healing, starting at half health, doubled and lethal fall damage) and becomes of the huge increase in max health, also reduces the effects of the eight modifier (hits above ~2.5% of health apply curse, reducing max health)
Why you can see what item do? 3:13, for example. There is writen bigger discription, than regular description
using a mod called "RoR2 Cheats" to spawn things for testing
@@Woolie it is thery pity, because I just want to see ALL DISCRIPTION of item, ALL Scale of it
just started to play ror2 on ps4 been really enjoying your videos
I always play with artifacts (namely command, sacrifice, and swarm) and there are times where I’ll get transcendence and farm the void to get like 50 or so shielf generators just to have like 20,000 health. It’s incredibly fun to do so! Like you said, it all depends on one’s playstyle. Gotta say, you’re videos are incredibly entertaining and I’m definitely subscribing!
I ran a multiplayer run as acrid and, being new, I was not fully competent at the game , plus we had a text file editor on the 4-man team. So what we needed up doing was stacking shields and strides in me, let me run around poisoning things, striding when I took to much damage, and basically let my teammates carry me.
just to let you know shaped glass no longer works like this science the 1.0 update shaped glass has no one shot protection anymore.
I'm new to this game, i don't now half what you are talking. but i just love listen to you.
If I get a few stealth kits I usually start taking shields, pretty easy to survive waiting for regen while invis.
Okay so... if I have Transcendence and I'm looking to buff those shield numbers as much as possible, I should skip out on the Shield Generators and go for things like Infusion and Bison Steak instead? Do their benefits get buffed by Transcendence's conversion?
yes, everything but shield gens will be increased (even more Transcendence!)
@@Woolie Aw sick. Thanks, man!
I find that lots of health and then something that generates barrier like a topaz broach or an aegis (if I have a strong source of healing) are best because you basically double your effective health pool for minimal upkeep effort.
I knew this video was coming and I just knew the comments would be on FIRE.
Now when I was playing my teddy bears didn't proc correctly with my shield only
Imagine getting 10 strides and just flying about the map for thirty seconds lol
Transcendence + Aegis even if your shield is damaged, it still give barrier when you get healing
love listening to this dude talk like this
Sad to hear that you feel that way about Strides, it can actually be pretty good with an AoE build, ex. Tesla still works while incorporeal
noticed while watching that it;s been like 5 years since i listened to a going quantum podcast
Shields are amazing when paired with auto-casting Jade Elephant. If you can play the game long enough to get multiple thousands of HP from transcendence and shield gen stacks, getting 500 armor on top of that makes you virtually invulnerable.
And that build seems more feasible than playing engineer and getting lucky enough to find an Aegis, Rejuvenation Rack, 10+ fungus, and a bunch of infusions.
woolie is my favorite math youtuber
Full shield build with teddy bears and a clover… can’t be beaten
I'm new to this game but imo having more HP simply means having more one shot protection even if not by the mechanic itself meaning that if u have a lot of HP and can tank a couple of hits without getting one shot that is basically like having multiple 1 shot protection innate to having a large HP pull
can you do a video covering cleansing pools i can never find one when i need it or when im going for the challenge.
Some questions:
Does damage from burning stop the shield regen?
It does interrupt recharge.
I had a trancendance run where I was able to get up to 11k shield hp. It was pretty damn great
If there was item that began regen shields like there is for meat I would happily go with shields more often
they just need to add more shield based items to make shields worth it like a shield delay down or an alternative version of corpsebloom that converts (blue) or adds (red) the ability of healing to affect shields at a reduced rate. or an item that gives a instant shield regen when you fall below a HP threshold
(it's thematically appropriate, too! the logbook literally says that people use shield gens for protection from the elements. so that would be a nice touch.)
Great analysis and I agree with your thoughts on shield. Sucks it's this way. I'd prefer if it were great on some characters and terrible on others
*laughs in transcendence + plasma shrimp*
