    This Curse of Strahd guide will lead you through changes that we've made to Argynvostholt. The chapter of Argynvostholt depicts an extremely empty space with not much for your players to interact with. This guide changes that by adding more NPCs to the area, additional quests, and new motivations. It also adds an additional barrier to returning the skull of Argynvost and redeeming Vladimir Horngaard!

    I think the reason there are only 8 revenants in the hold is the rest are wandering the valley helping to populate the random encounter table.

    Something that I always thought when reading the chapter, or when I played it. I thought that.
    "Wait this place has ralevenants, this place has a significant amount of history, the dragon who called this place his home is dead.
    Why are we going through this empty place.
    I wonder if a place like this filled with revenents, hatred, and dispair could have a glimmer of hope. A way for the players to see glimpses of this order in their prime when they were alive, and fighting for hope in argonvaust's name." What if every empty room on the lower levels gave the players minor hallucinations of the order telling their story by showing the heroes their past.

    I was having issues with the empty space at first too. Then I had it so when the light of a full moon, (conveniently after the party set up camp in the ruins that the wolves don't want to go near), the spectre of the castle as it was in its full glory, ethereal walls, servants, knights, lords and ladies in waiting. The party is completely ignored, and are invisible to all of the ghosts, except of course by the lord of the manor. He judged the players by how they acted, when they believed they were unobserved. He rewarded those who acted respectfully towards the dead, and scorns those who don't show such courtesy. Great series, love the content on my favorite module!

    I placed the Sunsword there and used it as an unfinished business, I named him Piotr beefed up his armor class, plate and +1 shield. He would surrender the sword hilt only to someone worthy. Single melee combat. It gave the fighter and Paladin a bit to argue over who should challenge him first. The party wanted the Paladin, who as an oath of vengeance went on to victory after his vow of enmity scored him two critical hits fairly quickly. Two heavy crit smites cut Piotr down and let him claim the Sunsword. It felt so much more climatic then it sitting on the window sill, or wherever it was supposed to be.
    I needed to edit this, it was Sergi’s sword, but the knight I named Piotr Rasputin I named him after Colossus from X-Men my favorite as a kid.

    I added a personal quest for my party's Paladin revolving around Argynvostholt. He's a Goliath who worships Annam, the god of Giants, and believes that he himself is Annam's chosen who will help bring about the return of the Giant's empire. In order to first prove himself however, Annam tasked him with retrieving a special artifact. This artifact being, a horn from the skull of Argynvost. Problem being though, he has no idea where the skull is. He also had no idea where Argynvostholt was until he found out from The Abbot recently. Upon arriving at the manor, he's gonna be doing whatever he can to find out where that skull is.

    I just wanna say that your channel is criminally underrated. I am two sessions into running Strahd for the first time (my players just finished up Durst Manor and are at the church in Barovia currently) and I've amended a bunch of the book with most of your ideas and other small personal tweaks. It really does make everything feel more alive and personal than how it's dictated in the book, and I was seriously concerned about what to do in Argonvost. I love the idea of the "unfinished business" quest lines and it's going to make this honestly "eh" location into an important one.

      @@LunchBreakHeroes In Argynbostholt, though, I've been thinking about a different aproach than you do. I've bonded every one of the PC's to a character, faction or place in Barovia through the dream sequence for the introduction: each character recieved a minor deck card talking about themselves and a major deck card talking about their destiny. One of the PCs 'll be a Noble Eldritch Knight, so I've bonded an ancestor to the Order. I want to make the order pivotal in my campaign, so I've made that Strahd was one of them, once, and they were the ones that killed him in the wedding. Later, Strahd turned two of his greatest comrades into powerful vampire bodyguards (took tha basis from "Sly Flourish vampires" and I modified them to be diametral different, one with counterspell and shield and the other paladiny smity and I want to make them RP heavy). So, one of those ex-Order comrades IS the Eldritch Knight antecesor, Lucius Valerius, and can turn into a dire wolf, all white with purple eyes, and counterspell and all, so they'll encounter him here. Also, I made Gwylim their ally, so my approach will be that they FIRST have to convince Gwylim, what can be done due to M. Eva "force of destiny", showing him the card and that, and THEN, Gwyilim, through the forces of love and destiny, shall be able to purify Vlaadimir. Then, the skull will be hold by Baba Lysaga to fly, making it more suitable to recover and guiding to the next PC story with her...

    My Barovia is a place that pulls people in who have committed a terrible deed. For example, the druid slaughtered her previous kindly mentor when the lycanthropy that infected her in our pre Ravenloft session took hold... The paladin from medieval England failed in his oath to protect a blind gypsy boy. These deeds pulled the pcs in. So this idea of unfinished business works perfectly in our game! Thank you for the vids! 😊

    3:00 to 3:30 If you want a tv show that puts this power of Life After Death into a dramatic perspective, check out a Twilight Zone episode named "The Death Ship", with Jack Klugman as a space ship commander who encounters a crashed ship on an alien planet. But there's a twist -- that ship is their ship! They're dead! But Klugman is not putting up with any of that shit. He orders the crew back onto their ship, and takes off. They escape the planet, and then Klugman says, "okay, see, we are not dead, let's land again and solve this mystery." The crew, naturally, are upset, but Klugman's commander is absolutely, 100%, not falling for any alien hi-jinks or shenanigans. Tapping into his own force of will, he keeps his crew from passing through the veil, and spending their afterlives normally with their loved ones. The final scenes of the commander forcing his men's ghosts back into reality is so awesome, that this is one of my top 3 favorite episodes. The others would be "The Thirty Fathom Grave", also with a dead crew, and Robert Redford's "Nothing In The Dark."
    Yeah, there are more famous ones, but these are my favorites. Matter of fact, I think I'll go watch some.
    Oh, also, "One For The Angels", about making a deal with a celestial being, and how humans are damn tricky.

    Running this for a higher level party atm.
    I converted it into a captured and repurposed site with more of a fortress type of feel.
    Captured and converted into a base for Lord Soth and a conversion of Dragotha from Age of Worms.
    Having displaced the revenants and debasing Argynvost's remains by installing Dragotha's skull atop the neck. The mockery being twofold, desecrating the revenant order's namesake and weakening Dragotha to force it to submit to Lord Soth.
    The revenants split between retaking their hold and reclaiming Argynvost's skull explaining their small numbers and relative ineffective aspects as tragic characters, as well as adding a few more wrinkles to the tapestry.

    you, Sir, are truly a gift. I was literally just thinking of how to properly introduce a Revenant into the game should they come up. How to incorporate the "random encounter" Revenant into the greater story of Argynvostholt and Curse of Strahd in general, and here you are with yet another insightful guide on where to start.
    I don't want to seem like I am copying you part and parcel for my own story, but the inspiration you give me has been the leaping off point for which I try to expand into my own story. Keep it up man, I only wish I could pick your brain on a more personal level sometime!

    Argynvostholt had some of the greatest potential of the scenarios in the book with it's incredible backstory, and as you pointed out, virtually no execution. Your approach was excellent. For my own game, I had a very tight timetable to run my group through the CoS, so I did something differently. The PCs started in the real world circa 1648, and I dropped hints about "the Order of the Dragon" figuring into both a PC's quest to find his lost father and to tie into the actual Order of the Dragon which claimed Vlad Tepes as a member. Legends about this order and their ruined convent in Barovia built up the place's mystique, so that when the PCs arrived, they were floored by the involvement of the dragon. The wisely listened to the fireplace dragon and went straight to the beacon and got it lit, but had they encountered the revenants first, it would have been role playing encounters and not the brawls listed in the book. I did keep the empty manor feel, as the place is of lost glory and hollow with the hatred Vladimir has used to keep his men from their eternal reward. Also, none of the revenants went to sleep when the beacon was lit, instead becoming the PCs' honor guard on the way to defeat Strahd, and when their bodies were destroyed, then they would pass on.

    • @LunchBreakHeroes
      @LunchBreakHeroes  4 года назад +2

      Sounds pretty cool. So you did you run a full game of CoS, or did you pare it down with Argynvostholt being the entry point, and then basically straight to Castle Ravenloft?

    • @stephenclements6158
      @stephenclements6158 4 года назад +2

      @@LunchBreakHeroes, thanks, and good question. My group likes a strong narrative arc on rails, so the sandbox approach to Barovia wouldn't work for them. Knowing this, I picked out the elements of CoS that most spoke to me and wove them into a 5 session adventure. The warning up front was no matter where they were or what was happening, if they had not defeated Strahd by the end of session 5, he was going to show up and the final battle would begin.
      I started them with a modified version of The Cleric's Challenge from 2nd ed to level them up, and the zombie horde plotline fed well into the Ravenloft mood. The hook was that the source of this zombie plague besetting the land was coming from this mysterious valley in the eastern Carpathians. Also, 1 PC found clues about his missing father leading him there in search of Argynvostholt.
      The PCs went through a mind-bending mountain pass and came out near Krezk. Strahd murdered their priest guide in front of them, and Van Richten surprised Strahd and caused him to flee. VR then became their hand holding NPC. I blended together the pool of Krezk, the drowning Vistani girl, a raid on Castle Ravenloft that deprived the PCs of VR but got them the dragon skull, Ireena, Kasimir, Argynvostholt, the Amber Temple, and a final battle. The PCs ditched out on Ireena, passed by the location of the Tome of Strahd despite DM flags to look over here, and finally met their ends in the Amber Temple. I changed the Amber Temple from a combat slugfest into a place of madness, darkness, and Wisdom saving throws to keep from becoming lost in its depths. The PCs made split up and got lost in the dark, but Strahd came at the end of session 5 to sympathize with those who tried to destroy them, before leaving them to die in the freezing ruin.

    I had a player of mine die early on the the campaign, and she wanted to play a paladin, so I said she should be one of the knights of the Order of the Silver Dragon. I told her that I was moving the timeline around a bit so that the knights were defeated 20 years ago.
    I lied. When she arrived in Argynvostholt the players met Argynvost's ghost, but her character could not see him.
    She's as cursed as all the other knights are, except that she is more 'alive', because she was the most devoted to Argynvost (devotion paladin). Vladimir asks her if she has understood the truth that Strahd must live, or if he has to kill her *again*.
    Sir Godfrey tells her that she went to the Amber Temple centuries ago to try to find a way to bring Argynvost back to life, and that it was there that she 'drank deeply from the well of dark power that the rest of the Knights had only tasted", and that was why she was 'alive'. He tells her that each time she dies she loses more of herself and becomes more enthralled by the dark power.
    In this way I made Argynvostholt's ancient emptiness work for me. The player expected to find more here, after only 20 years, but the truth is that centuries had passed, and that slowly sank in as they explored the ruined place. It's a husk of it's former glory, but perhaps it can be something again.

    In my campaing i make Strahd resurrect the dragon and force it to protect his castle, so if the players want to restore faith they have to fight the undead dragon and bring the bones.
    If someone likes the idea use it.

    I'll be the first to admit, I adore your content. I'm super excited about where this channel will be taken in the future, and my Curse of Strahd module book is filled with sticky notes based off of your ideas.
    I'll admit, I found this a little disappointing. Less disappointing than the actual module though.
    The Order of the Silver Dragon were noble knights long since corrupted, it's very true that they deserve a story that pushes them forward.
    I think there should be two camps of Revanents. We have the Loayalists under Godfry and the Order of the Bone Drake under a new NPC we'll call Larry for now.
    The Order of the Bone Drake hate it in Barovia. They were inspired by their captain's hatred of Strahd and their own sorrow at first, but now that Strahd had died, they're ready to get out.
    However, the only way out is to gain Strahd's permission. They’re not going to do that. So they search out the Dark Powers of the Amber Temple for help. One of them in particular calls for them, Tarakamedes, the Grave Wyrm. These Revenants are quickly corrupted by this figure, and they aim to free him. Godfry (who is LN) will beg the players to stop them. After all, he and the Loyalists cannot leave Vladamir's side. He's suffering in his hatred and needs them.
    In addition, a man we'll call Fred for now was the butler of Argynvost. He is now a ghost who does his best to serve all that remains of his master. He's going to take the players directly to Vladamir so we can skip all of the "you walk into another room. There's literally nothing there."
    Now the players get a choice. Do they help Godfry, the man of transcendental love but is duty bound to stop them from their quest? Or do they help Larry, the follower of dark powers but whose goals align with their own?
    In addition, I'm going to throw away the whole "rekill everyone with a dragon head beacon" bit. Now, each of the revenants remember who they are but stay revenants until the next time they die. After all, they're still in Barovia where their spirits are forever trapped, however they become LG again, and they will set aside their revenge to do good once again, becoming allies to the party.
    Thank you for reading my rant. I do my best thinking when I'm writing against an idea. I love your content, thank you.

    I am preparing to do Curse of Strahd this is my ultimate D&D Bucketlist campaign I have wanted to do Ravenloft since 1989. And I have had characters start but due to losing people am about to restart. Even before entering characters into Barovia as they approach in two scenarios I have dropped hints in the way of armour and pennants from the Order of the Silver Dragon.... as something to find in Barovia... under heavy heavy secrecy... as I am preparing to get them through I have had a brainstorm about a place ... a battlefield situation where characters will come across a vision of a terrible battle between the forces of Strahd and the Order of the Silver Dragon... I might have 2 places for the reinvisioning and this force of the revenants may actually shed some light. I was thinking one of the scenes where the character fall into a magical sleep they are forced to reenact a trenched spot not far from the castle of Ravenloft. And also somewhere in the fields around Argynvosthold where they can witness the death of the dragon and the siege of the hold... While I haven’t figured out how I will run that - where they take part but can not change the past... I believe the drama of the sight will convince them the importance of finding the dragon skull and returning it. Having only read the book - I’m concerned the characters will miss this very important part of the adventure.

    • @jamesklassen6554
      @jamesklassen6554 4 года назад

      So I may run them through a battle that does “psychic damage” where when they reach 50% hp and 25% hp they make a save that knocks them out of the dream... haunting fight... that they take part and witness. The longer they are in the fight the more clues they will get. And in the dream fight hints about an item are revealed. This may very well be one of the quests to unseal the mausoleum. Particularly as names of other knights are brought to Vladimir and proofs of the characters commitment... breaking down Vlad’s Bitter defences to living memories of others lost in the conflict and perhaps of the SIlver Dragon himself.
      In my “revisit” to the events of the past Paladins and Clerics of Good alignments will be rewarded for understanding how important it is to break Vladimir from his grudge and put him to rest. As a reader of the compiled module (as excellent as it is) I am worried that they will miss the Knights.

    • @LunchBreakHeroes
      @LunchBreakHeroes  4 года назад +1

      Missing the knights is a definite possibility. Even with the content that I propose, and the RAW +1 AC boost for returning the skull, it's still a very much optional location. If you want to make it more of a requirement, you could put one of the items of power there. The icon works well. I had the sunsword there, but if I had to do it again I'd put that in the temple.
      As far as flashback sequences go, you may want to check out the Interactive Tome of Strahd suppliment on DMsGuild. I've never run it before, but I've heard good things about it.

    However, I have a question about the Revenants. The “awakened” Revenants all have unfinished business quests, but what’s the reasoning for the other “mindless brute” Revenants to not have unfinished business? Because I understand Vladimir’s hate is keeping these Revenants around but if the other Revenants resolve their unfinished business, they can rest so why can’t the same be done for the “mindless brute” ones? Just asking because I have a player who loves to ask why to every thing and I’m trying my best to have reasonable answers

    I enjoy the changes and they are in fact more engaging, but remembering the various changes can lead to a train wreck if not imitated closely. A guide would be phenomenal.
    Also I'm looking on Etsy for wax presses for letters given during the campaign. Mainly the letter that brought them there as a big reveal. If I'm doing the straud crest, I'd have to do the other factions as well. Do you think this is a bad idea, or an emersive idea to make players pay more attention?

      @@LunchBreakHeroes They refer to types of magic. And yes in the Forgotten Realms you must have Mystra and the Weave to cast Divine and Arcane magic. But, in other Campaign Settings, there is no Weave because there is no Mystra, and as we all know, when Mystra died in the FR magic got crazy. You don't have Mystra and the Weave in Dark Sun, or Dragon Lance, or Ebberon, or even Ravenloft. Ravenloft or the demi-plane of Dread is a hub of a sort, and many characters from many campaign settings get trapped inside it (Vecna from Greyhawk or Lord Soth from Dragon Lance), and Gods have no power within the demi-plane, thus no Weave. Every rule in this plane is dictated by the Dark Powers.

      I think railroads are unavoidable and building a castle out of sand and water is still just boring sand and water, so eventually too much openness can get really meaningless. There allows for many possibilities but sometimes you have to reel things in with focus and singularity, which can come off railroady, but that's okay! Strahd is about telling many many different strands of a story with many possibilities. So videos like these just support the game in accomplishing the objective that it sets out to do, to allow players to tell a great collaborative story. So I think calling his comment defensive is OFFENSIVE of you to do, and saying "railroady" was done somewhat corrosively. How would you like to see this particular adventure guide done better? Or the adventure as a whole? Do you like Curse of Strahd? Anyway, keep it up or not bye.
