I saw the reveal of gear 5 in the manga i was HUGELY disappointed, however now that I'm seeing it on the animation version.. they did so well. I completely changed my mind, the animation, music, atmosphere etc is really selling it. The manga had none of that just the explanation and personally wasn't good enough, took away from what made luffy, luffy

No matter what anyone says and claims, Gear 5 was underwhelming. Toonforce is a great asspull. Fights with bosses were badass and epic. Now they will not be anymore.

I think the battles would still be epic, but with a bit more humor.
You can just think of it like the power of shape-shifting and making anything he touches into a strong rubber, even not physical things.
He's basically immortal now as shown in the manga with Kaido. Luffy's punch literally pierces through Kaido's head and then next second Kaido is fine. Luffy takes damage and then he's fine. An epic being like Kaido is shown flustered like Momonosuke and Usopp. Not cool.
Gear 4 should have been the end. It was badass. Or if Oda could think up another gear, anything would have been better than toon force.
Can you imagine a gear 5 fight with enies lobby arc? With Marineford? If you've not read the Manga then you'll not understand why some manga readers were so disappointed with Gear 5
