The man truly was a genius. Pop 'N' Fresh (The Pillsbury Doughboy), Boris Badenov, Burgermeister Meisterberger, The Ghost Host, the list goes on and on. Thanks for posting these Haunted Mansion outtakes.
Paul Frees was in a movie with Vincent Price which was called The Abominable Dr. Phibes. He was uncredited for the role of the stage singer. He'll be missed forever. God rest his soul.
The voice you seemed to hear every where and rarely saw the person behind it; he was certainly a busy man! I can only remember seeing him twice on film, in "The Thing from Another World" (1951) and more notably in George Pal's "The War of the Worlds" in 1953, where he played a radio reporter (and reminding us very much with that voice of his of Orson Welles and his famous broadcast of the story in 1938, which was a nice touch in the film). This was very interesting and really gave me an even better appreciation of Mr. Frees' talents...thanks!
And he has a lot of camera time in the Sinatra film "Suddenly" playing one of Frank's henchmen. I joke that movie goers of that time might have watched that film and thought how could a guy with a voice like that be a criminal instead of a radio actor? :)
I grew up hearing his unmistakable voice everywhere in movies, films and narrations, but never knew his name or face until now. Thank you so much for this wonderful upload.
incredible book...I mentioned it here a few months ago. the title of that book is "Welcome Foolish Mortals" and quite the life...those voice credits and other appearances that are chronicled in the back of the book are mind-blowing...he used the Peter Lorre voice for the character, Morocco Mole, on SECRET SQUIRREL.
Paul frees and mel blanc are both my all time favorite voice actors not many have the talents they both did and both will still remain as my top favorite voice actors other do come Close though - Forrest
I'm watching Santa Claus is Coming to Town and on IMDb it says that he is the voice of Burgermeister Meisterburger, Grimsby, Soldiers, Townsmen and a Doctor. His nickname was The man with a thousand voices and he truly was.
One of the touchstone voices of 20th century pop culture. A vast amount of his work was uncredited, yet unmistakable. An iconic and essential contributor to science fiction film of the 1950's and beyond. The Hal Blaine of voice. A giant!
oh my gosh, before I even read the description I knew it was the voice from The Haunted Mansion lol. That voice is so recognizable. He's so talented. =D
I'm taken back to 1976, Walt Disney World sitting in the two-seater carriage riding thru the Haunted Mansion. I was a little kid & my brother was sitting next to me. I looked away & the voice urged me to look back at the person sitting next to me. My brother was gone & in his place was a ghost! I freaked, then laughed! Thank you Paul Frees for this fun memory! :)
"Welcome, foolish mortals!" That sent chills up my spine, and I love it! His voice was truly golden and one of a kind. Thanks so much for uploading this! ^__^
Wasn't seen very often. In one of my favorite old scifi movies, 1955's "War of The Worlds", he was an intrepid radio reporter, bringing the reality of an invasion from Mars, to a horrified nation; a obvious tribute and reference to Orson Wells and his terrifying radio production on Halloween night, 1938. What an amazing voice! R I P Paul...
Paul Frees really WAS a "voice actor." He was a real superstar. Long before the days of ISDN and home studios, Frees had a home studio. But if a client wanted him from home; they would have to pay for a 15khz broadcast loop from their studio to his home. In those days, it would take about a week to install, IF you knew someone at Pac Bell. He made a huge amount of money and he's as fresh today--nearly 25 years after he died--as he was then.
I hope Disney NEVER changes the narration for that magical ride. Disney is about MAGIC and only precious few attractions have it and all of the Star Wars etc add-ons are ruining the Disney feel. Disney is about EXPERIENCE and amusement parks are about "rides."
It's very sad that Paul Frees died. I ALWAYS remind my parents that every year on November 2nd marks the anniversary of his death. R.I.P. Paul,we'll miss U. U had the same hobbies that I had. Too bad we couldn't add your voice overs in2 my dead romance movies.
Paul's career stretched through radio, movies, and TV for almost 50 years. He started out as an impressionist {his "Boris Badenov" voice is his take on character actor Akim Tamiroff; his "Peter Lorre" was heard as early as Spike Jones' 1947 recording of "My Old Flame"} .
Fantastic voices. Paul Winchell, Paul Frees, and Mel Blanc are probably the greatest of the golden age voiceover actors. Frank Welker's the only one really left from those days. Rob Paulsen comes up pretty near the top of the list for me too.
Ya know, one of the amazing things about this is that despite the fact that this was recorded decades ago, the sound quality is such that most of it still sounds like Mr. Frees recorded it earlier this week.
there is an awesome book called "Welcome Foolish Mortals" that gives an in-depth look at Paul Frees career...it's one of the only, if not THEE only biography on Paul Frees i've come across.
Paul was among the best of the best, which also included Mel Blank, Daws Butler, and June Foray, whom I had the pleasure of meeting while conducting a concert of Hanna-Barbera music with the San Bernardino Symphony back in 1999. A favorite hobby of mine is trying to pick out his uncredited voice overdubbing bad or foreign actors in films from the 1950's through the 70's. His "major" ON screen appearances are in the movies "Suddenly," "War Of The Worlds," and "The Thing From Another World."
Don't forget those few minutes on "The Shaggy Dog" There was an episode of "The Millionaire" where he is in it, in addition to the John Beresford Tipton part..
@lednew2010 over the years I have wondered how many people would see something like "War of the Worlds" and realize that the narrator at the beginning is the same guy playing the reporter. Same with that Millionaire episode.
Plenty of pics online now. I've purchased some over the years, and uploaded them to the Paul Frees Facebook group. Shorty thereafter, they somehow made it out into cyberspace.
Wow Oh My God This is totally outstanding to hear this ! :) This is Paul Frees who played "Meowrice" in Gay Puree :D My mom and I just got done watching him give his voice to "Meowrice" and we heard him say "Meow, hm hm hm" like a little laugh he does during this ride :) that is awesome.
Boris Badenov, Bluto, 1960's Ben "Thing" Grimm, many characters from the Rankin-Bass Christmas specials, & of course our Ghost Host (Welcome foolish mortals)...Paul Frees is a genius!
This was the voice behind narration for the 1960 "13 Ghosts" trailer...and "Atlantis,The Lost Continent"...among MANY others!! But most people,of course, did not know his NAME...nor that of "Outer Limits" Vic Perrin...

The Peter Lorre was the one he used for Morocco Mole in the Secret Squirel cartoon. He also does the pirate captain and the auctioneer in Pirates of the Caribbean ride. And Voyage Through Inner space, if I remember correctly
He did, but only one episode of "Knight Rider" and it was the second one. Another actor did the first one.. his name escapes me, but I think he does the lead voice on the Tranformers (both cartoon and the movies).
@Mxsmanic Its on the haunted mansion soundtrack for the 30th anniversary of the ride I am pretty sure its the same cd they sell at disneyland now for the haunted mansion soundtrack
Let us not forget he was the voice of the evil black and white cat from the 1962 animated Warner Bros film "Gay Purr-ee" . He voiced Meowrice, a slim Tuxedo cat. He is devious, shrewd, and willing to hurt others to achieve his own motives. He is my idol!
There are no other Gods besides Lord Jesus Christ as we all will find out on judgement day. He does punish idolaters later that don't stop doing it. Unfortunately there is no rest for the unrepentant and the disbelievers in the lake of fire and brimstone. It is the second death.
Does anyone know if Frees every recorded Poe's "The Raven?" His voice is PERFECT for it. Thanks for this great chance to hear the man at work! What a voice, what a talent. Thanks!
he was also the voice of the thing in hanna babarr’s world of super adventure cartoon. and he was the voice of the burgermeister in the claymation movie “santa claus is coming to town"
I don't know about Mr. Frees having listened to Orson Wells when he was younger, because they were pretty close to the same age. Paul just had an amazing voice, although he and Orson Wells did sound similar. There is a more contemporary actor who's voice is almost identical to Paul's; Victor Rader Wexler. Although Mr. Wexler is not a voice actor; not that I'm aware.
Amazing that we're listening to the actual recording session to the Haunted Mansion!
God, I love Paul Frees. He was one of the greats. I smile every time I go to Disneyland and hear his voice.
Totally Agree! He’s one of the Greats 🎉
That Peter Lorre impression just makes me so happy.
The man truly was a genius. Pop 'N' Fresh (The Pillsbury Doughboy), Boris Badenov, Burgermeister Meisterberger, The Ghost Host, the list goes on and on. Thanks for posting these Haunted Mansion outtakes.

Michael Klein ช
Michael Klein, Paul Frees also played Dr. Charles Pommer, in Space Master X7.
And he has a lot of camera time in the Sinatra film "Suddenly" playing one of Frank's henchmen.

And there is the revised version from 2014.
Paul frees and mel blanc are both my all time favorite voice actors not many have the talents they both did and both will still remain as my top favorite voice actors other do come Close though - Forrest
Paul Frees and Tony Jay two of THE BEST deep voice over actors.
tomtalker2000 Thurl Ravenscroft, too!
ruclips.net/video/SjbnH9jNN1I/видео.html
Orson Welles would give them a run for their money.
Don't believe me: ruclips.net/video/0DPW44-I3n4/видео.html

John Denver
One of the touchstone voices of 20th century pop culture. A vast amount of his work was uncredited, yet unmistakable. An iconic and essential contributor to science fiction film of the 1950's and beyond. The Hal Blaine of voice. A giant!
Thank you so much for this! Paul Frees did many voices in the Rankin/Bass Christmas specials, too. Awesome voice.

Love the "Boris Badenov" and "Peter Lorre" takes.

My Hero! Thank you for this!
+David Arias-Rios i love these old voice actors!
He is my hero for voice actors! Love his stuff!!!!
paul frees one of the greattest voices of all time we still love him
He imitated Lorre singing "My Old Flame" on Spike Jones's Halloween album (and also sang "Deep Purple" brilliantly!)
The Peter Lorre sound alike is a copy of Paul's Morocco Mole from Secret Squirrel.
That laugh at 3:53 would be used in the corridor.
Ya know, one of the amazing things about this is that despite the fact that this was recorded decades ago, the sound quality is such that most of it still sounds like Mr. Frees recorded it earlier this week.
These voice over actors are So Talented, this was back before computers existed...
The Peter Lorre impression was truly amazing, even catching the way Mr.Lorre ended his sentences crisply.
My favorite voice actor of all time.
there is an awesome book called "Welcome Foolish Mortals" that gives an in-depth look at Paul Frees career...it's one of the only, if not THEE only biography on Paul Frees i've come across.
Absolutely wonderful ~ no one else could have made this creepier ~ though many people have tried ~ as a You Tube search will reveal.
Oh my gawwd this is amazing!
Thanks for posting this.
His default voice is amazing as is, I had no idea his other characterizations were so good.
Paul was among the best of the best, which also included Mel Blank, Daws Butler, and June Foray, whom I had the pleasure of meeting while conducting a concert of Hanna-Barbera music with the San Bernardino Symphony back in 1999. @@lowbaritonewwj Oh! I have to try to find that one. Paul actually on-screen is so rare a sight.
@lednew2010 the Milionaire episode is on RUclips, somewhere?
I recall uploading it to the Paul Frees Facebook group in the last year.
@@lowbaritonewwj I found it. "The Thorne Sisters Story" thanks!!
@lednew2010 over the years I have wondered how many people would see something like "War of the Worlds" and realize that the narrator at the beginning is the same guy playing the reporter.
Same with that Millionaire episode.
I've been hearing this voice ever since I can remember. I was fortunate enough to go to Disneyland every weekend from 1-15 years of age.
All my life, I wondered what he looked like! I've heard his voice all through my younger life!
Plenty of pics online now.
I've purchased some over the years, and uploaded them to the Paul Frees Facebook group.
Shorty thereafter, they somehow made it out into cyberspace.
What a great archive. Thanks for posting!
A national treasure! Thank you for posting!

Brings back many happy memories!
Does anyone have video of Paul Frees while he's DOING some voices? I don't think I'ver ever seen what he looks like - outside of some still pictures.
1:39 that blooper! oh my goodness i love this! lol
Brilliant! Thanks for posting!
His first "When hinges creep" bit... gave me goosebumps.....
This was the voice behind narration for the
1960 "13 Ghosts" trailer...and "Atlantis,The
Lost Continent"...among MANY others!!
But most people,of course, did not know his
NAME...nor that of "Outer Limits" Vic Perrin...
this guy is in The Thing from Another World (1951)
And was also the guy making recordings for "future history" in the original "War of the Worlds".
kelley davis, he was also the voice of a set of "talking rings" in George Pal's Time Machine, The narrator in The Monolith Monsters and a number of voice parts in When Worlds Collide.
The 60's belonged to Paul Frees and Daws Butler!!!
Love this. Even my German husband had to take a second LOOK.
Voice over for many movie trailers in the 50s-60s. I discovered him when trying to figure out the voice-over artist for "Return of the Fly".
He also did the narration for St. Valentines Day Massacre movie.
@locaterobert He played Boris Badenov in Rocky and Bullwinkle. Also, he played Inspector Fenwick in Dudley Do-Right.
The Peter Lorre was the one he used for Morocco Mole in the Secret Squirel cartoon. He also does the pirate captain and the auctioneer in Pirates of the Caribbean ride. And Voyage Through Inner space, if I remember correctly
So different from the lite-masculine even girly sound of today.
his talking voice sounds SO MUCH like Orson Welles
Frees was also the voice of the Thing from the mid sixties Fantastic Four cartoon.
Oh my! *swoons*
kuramasan, his beautiful, deep voice has always made me feel weak in the knees. ❤️
He also did the voice of K.A.R.R. from the 1982 series "Knight Rider"!
He did, but only one episode of "Knight Rider" and it was the second one. Another actor did the first one.. his name escapes me, but I think he does the lead voice on the Tranformers (both cartoon and the movies).
Warren Jones Peter Cullen.
Thank you.
Warren Jones You're welcome!
Warren Jones The other voice was that of Optimus Prime.
I hear a variation of his great Boris Badenov voice : )
Extremely talented voice actor....
2:00
Each time I hear that I expect Frees to go 1 ghost... Haha! 2 ghost... Haha! 3 ghost... Haha!
@Mxsmanic Its on the haunted mansion soundtrack for the 30th anniversary of the ride I am pretty sure its the same cd they sell at disneyland now for the haunted mansion soundtrack
He was also the uncredited voice of the computer in "Colossus - The Forbin Project".
He was also the narrator on "The Impossibles". DAMN.
This is just great
His voice has a similar timbre to Orson Welles' voice. It's a shame he didn't do live action.
So Frees was "Boris Badenov" too from the Rocky & Bullwinkle show.
what a great voice he had..the haunted mansion how cool that was..
He also did a pretty good Howard McNear impression as Doc Adams once when sitting in for McNear on a Gunsmoke episode
Be sure to check out this voicemeister's imdb page. he did a LOT of acting too!
Interesting you say that, because I always thought it was Welles doing the voice.
2:43- I'm pretty sure he's trying to do Peter Lorre's voice
I think I got used to doing whatever this guys says to do by going to Disney Land.
@jzerony Try to get ahold of "The Thing From Another World" aka "The Thing", he has a small role in that.
Wow! Where did you find this? Paul Frees as Peter Lorre! Cool stuff!
One of the very best vo gods.
There are no other Gods besides Lord Jesus Christ as we all will find out on judgement day. He does punish idolaters later that don't stop doing it. Unfortunately there is no rest for the unrepentant and the disbelievers in the lake of fire and brimstone. It is the second death.
At 2:42, is that supposed to be Peter Lorre?
Yeah, I think that's what he was going for.
@videozfann I looked forever tofind out who karr's voice was finally found it. This guys voice was cool, is he still alive?
He also dubbed Toshiro Mifune in the movie Grand Prix
more Boris Karloff-y. but definitely Cool Stuff!!!
Does anyone know if Frees every recorded Poe's "The Raven?" His voice is PERFECT for it.
Thanks for this great chance to hear the man at work! What a voice, what a talent. Thanks!
@Malibucompany no he died in November 1986
he was also the voice of the thing in hanna babarr’s world of super adventure cartoon. and he was the voice of the burgermeister in the claymation movie “santa claus is coming to town"
He's also the voice imitated in the Hellboy movie, the German guy in the suit.
The Best Of the Best!
I love this!!!!!
once in a century does a voice like his emerge
The Voice of K.A.R.R Knight Rider the Episode KITT VS KARR First KARR from Trust dont rust was peter Cullen :] nice voice
2:05 And here's Boris' audition for the Haunted Mansion.
That was Vincent Price, another brilliant voice.
@StanBennet Don't know about that. Didn't see that movie.
Why is this man so forgotten?? He can beat the rest. You say Paul Frees....they say...who?? So sad.....
I don't know about Mr. Frees having listened to Orson Wells when he was younger, because they were pretty close to the same age.
