i dont have a kings but have an iKamper and Hannibal traditional fold out - a couple things which might help: 1) condensation - try to line every exposed aluminum with carpets and put a heavier duty shade cloth underneath the mattress to provide some air gap - best i found is green/grey matt used by RV crowd to keep their awning area clean - relative cheap and will fix 80% of your issues - but its always an issue with aluminium base/frame (similar to ikamper) - almost never an issue on hannibal tent because they use a wood base set up; 2) leading edge water (and worst bull dust) ingress - have a look at Alu Cab and other expensive RTT of same configuration and see how they resolve the issue - probably the way the lips of the bottom box section is constructed which cant be easily remedied - you can alway secure a heavy piece of rubber flap covering the gap in the front so it reduce/stops the rain and dust getting in under pressure- the rubber flap will bent when the lid is open up- you might need some velcro to make sure the flap does not flap up in the wind though. - will probably look ugly but will reduce the issue - and probably use lots of foam seal around the edges would also help 3) flapping of awning - get someone (canvass guy) to make a copy using heavier guage canvass 6 -10oz - will solve your issue except in the heaviest winds - go to the Bush Company and see if they sell you one of their heavier rods seperately (the awning on kings is a copy of theirs) Hope it all works out for you
Thank you so much for taking the time to offer such good advice. We will certainly go about doing some of the things you suggested. With a couple fixes like you suggested it could be a incredible tent for the price. Cheers
forgot to mention telescopic ladder dust/sand ingress is a known issue across all manufacturers who use them- although some handles better than others when in dusty /sandy country - just make sure you give a wipe and, if you carry a cordless blower, a blow, or duster also come in handy, BEFORE collapsing the ladder - this method would be ok if only go in those area occasionally and its not too windy - but if you are doing a lot traveling through windy Pilbera area (red dust) get an ebay 2 piece slide ladder - much better in dealing with these sort of situation and lighter as well - manufacturers only use telescopic letter because it can accommodate a range of vehicle heights and looks fancier- but, as you found out, not actually expedition ready. Kings does offer a value for money equation, but you have prepared to spend a bit effort and $ to get it to expedition ready status
Check out the flexible, glue-on solar panels that they have for RV camping now (Caravan). That would be ideal for your tent setup and they have become quite efficient as well. You could use it with the tent open or closed to charge batteries (300-500 watts or so).
Excellent and honest review. We had one pre ordered last year but cancelled the order when videos started emerging about water ingress and roof lining collapses. Hopefully that saga is in the past, they obviously did not do any pretesting before selling the product. They certainly are great value for what you get, my only issue was with the flappy and light weight awning, they need stronger spring bars and the hard mattress. We ended up purchasing another brand, a lot more expensive but I am happy with my decision. Safe travels and keep up the the vids.
I have a GOFSR (Freespirit Recreation) roof top on our off-road trailer. I wanted an iCamper but FSR claimed there would be massive ($$$) modification to the "tower" of the trailer to mount another tent. In any case moisture from breathing in colder temps is always a problem. FSR has an insulated version that solves much of that but we don't have that model as we are planning on Central / South America. Same problem you had with the mattress even though FSR had nearly 3 inches of mattress. But the aluminum rails could be felt. We added a queen size cooling mattress topper and it is comfy now.
Just got one last week. They have put ally ribs between the roof foam and carpet to stop it falling down. Seems to be working. Can also confirm there is a second seal at the front. Biggest issue is still the rain fly. Ripped the zips off to help stop the noise but the flapping is shit.
Great video. I would love to see what you did with the additional seal. I have had mine for 3 days and it is full of water! This is the 2nd Kings roof top tent that has failed and I am getting tired of fitting then returning and doing it all again. They should water test these prior to selling. Riveting the reinforcement through the roof is such a bad method of construction. My roof is slightly concave so it pools the water to lower levels which is always where the rivet penetrate. I suspect mine is also leaking near the hinges. So frustrating.
So annoying! I used a tube of clear silicone and fired it onto every exposed rivet. The rubber seal we just stuck around the leading edge inside where the hinges are.
@@tonynewell5712 My second RTT was a mark I but I now have a mark II. It is much better, braces are not pop riveted etc but it still leaks a little water unfortunately.
@@ZombieHoard sorry to hear , i was almost going to get one because of the price but i think i will pay extra and have a long wait for a different brand, the reviews for the mark 11 haven’t been to great , happy travels 👍🤓
Great job guys. Well I’m 6’4” would it be okay at a pinch? Is there any spare headroom/foot space for you at 6’2”? Can’t really try before I buy here in Alice Springs.
You would fit but expect your head to rub on the canvas wall I reckon. Hard to explain but if you could rig something up to pull that wall back out it would be fine

no offence but it seems with all of the alterations you needed to make this water tight and comfortable, it doesn't seem like a good value purchase. Considering the number of cons compared to the pros - would you buy it again?
Hi mate, we just bought some foam from K-Mart and a tube of silicone - the competition is around 3k more... For the value for money yes we definitely would, I believe Adventure Kings have now fixed a lot of these issues on the tent too. Cheers
Bought one and never ever again will I throw my hard earned away again. The quality is shit but wait till it rains. I swagged it before n thats what ive gone back too
Got the same tent - pre ordered as well. Recently got an enormous amount of water into it after a few days of rain (it was closed the entire time). Entire bottom carpet was soaked as well as the mattress. Couldn't quite pinpoint where it was entering. Have since contacted 4wdsupacentre looking for a replacement however they're unfortunately being very difficult to deal with. Hope you guys don't experience the same thing! Good review though and great idea to solve the hard mattress. I really loved the tent up until the water issue.
Thanks for watching Tim. Mate that absolutely sucks - especially that they won't honor a replacement. They were great with my ladder situation at first but have suddenly gone quiet and won't return my emails. Their customer service needs a huge overhaul. Hope they pull finger for ya
Hey Guys, Thanks for taking the time to make this vid. Have the Same tent - Pre-ordered as well however i think i got the second batch which now has metal bars that run across roof lining (presumably to hold it in place in case of any water ingress), i have been in driving rain and it is ok with the second seal, however not perfect. The condensation is the worst party no matter what you do it is always moist inside the tent. Interesting to see your gas struts are holding the roof up i have a 250kw solar panel (weighs less then 8kgs and nothing else on the roof and it wont open by itself you have to push it up and hold it up. I have since contacted 4wd supacentre and they are (as the other person said) being difficult and wont reply for weeks on end. One thing you might want to keep an eye on is the bolt at the top of the gas strut, the excess thread presses into the canvas and is likely to make a hold in the canvas soon. Great to see you guys out and on the road full time! living the dream!
Ok, I just finished trying to mount a solar panel to the top of the RTT, SIMPLY PUT , NO GO, if you want solar on top it has to be a flex panel, 300 watts is fine, into the dc dc enerdrive , 1480 x 645, 16 amps, Hard solar is to heavy, will not allow you to lift the tent up, simple as that,
Bugger! Have you considered replacing the gas struts with stronger ones? Have heard of people doing that for other RTT's when they mount tyres or kayaks on top etc
Great review. We had one on our JK that we have just sold. We had a Gobi steel rack and found the weight a bit much. What rack system are you using and what suspension setup do you run to manage the weight? We have just purchased another JK and intend on getting another Kings RRT. Cheers

Hi guys. My wife and I are in our 70s with 50+ years of camping/caravanning. We have owned a soft floor camper trailer for the last 5 or 6 years and have covered about 80,000 kms with it. There is only one game changer for us - water ingress/internal condensation. At the first drip, we resolve the leak - a bar of bees wax works well. Design defects which allow leaks would kill the product for us.

The Kings Big Daddy swags have a hard mattress as well. I went to Kmart and bought a bamboo mattress topper.
Yeah, we used to have the Big Daddy Deluxe so we were expecting it to be the same. Ha nope!
I added the mattress topper and a woollen underlay and although still a bit firm, I actually slept well.
Did it change your fuel usage much?
Hard to say as we set up our kitchen and storage set up at the same time but overall it doesn't seem to increase massively our fuel consumption.
