  • Tallulah Brockman Bankhead was an American stage and screen actress. She was a member of the Bankhead and Brockham family, a prominent Alabama political family. Both her grandfather and her uncle served as US Senators; her father served as a US Representative in Congress for 11 terms, the final two as Speaker of the House of Representatives. Tallulah Bankhead's support of liberal causes, including the budding civil rights movement, broke with her southern contemporaries with their support of white supremacy and Jim Crow laws as championed by Southern Democrats; she often opposed her own family publicly.
Primarily an actress of the stage, Bankhead appeared in several films including an award-winning performance in Alfred Hitchcock's Lifeboat . She also had a brief but successful career on radio and made appearances on television as well.
In her personal life, Bankhead struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction; she reportedly smoked 120 cigarettes a day and often talked openly about her vices. She also openly had a series of relationships with both men and women.
Bankhead supported foster children and helped families escape the Spanish Civil War and World War II. She was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1972, and the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame in 1981. During her career, Bankhead amassed nearly 300 film, stage, television and radio roles.
    Early life
Tallulah Brockman Bankhead was born on January 31, 1902, in Huntsville, Alabama, to William Brockman Bankhead and Adelaide Eugenia "Ada" Bankhead ; her great-great-grandfather, James Bankhead was born in Ulster, Ireland and settled in South Carolina. "Tallu" was named after her paternal grandmother, who in turn was named after Tallulah Falls, Georgia. Her father hailed from the Bankhead-and-Brockman political family, active in the Democratic Party of the South in general and of Alabama in particular. Her father was the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1936 to 1940. She was the niece of Senator John H. Bankhead II and granddaughter of Senator John H. Bankhead. Her mother, Adelaide "Ada" Eugenia, was a native of Como, Mississippi, and was engaged to another man when she met William Bankhead on a trip to Huntsville to buy her wedding dress. The two fell in love at first sight and were married on January 31, 1900, in Memphis, Tennessee. Their first child, Evelyn Eugenia , was born two months prematurely and had some vision difficulties.

She did not "struggle " with alcoholism or drug addiction. She unapologetically drank at least a quart of Old Grandad bourbon per day and used cocaine, pot and poppers to party with, took handfuls of barbiturates to get to sleep at night and smoked 100 Craven A cigarettes a day. When she died at 66, her doctor reported her liver to be healthy. Amazingly, she had a very productive career on stage, radio and a few television appearances and a couple of films worth watching. Her comedic performance on the Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour can be seen here on YT, and she is brilliantly funny, though said to be hell to work with. OK, but many of our current famed stars who feign such warmth and sensitivity on the chat shows are hell on earth to work with. I won't be naming names.

Not Bankhead in one of those photos at the beginning in the royal blue dress, is Valerie Harper when she was playing Tallulah on stage.

The narrator should have mentioned the relationship between TB and Hattie McDaniel if he is going to keep putting Hattie's pic on the screen

do you even have to copy the wikipedia page into a separate reader, or do you just record right off the page with accessibility tools? it's word-for-word. i guess it doesn't get much easier than this, uhh--get that bread, or whatever

Boo for bot readers. A drag.
Yes, and what is this crap of saying Tallulah was battling addiction? That is modern judgmentalism talking. Not everyone who partakes of alcohol and drugs is a hopeless addict. That is an American Puritanical attitude that looks truly ridiculous when compared to the more even handed and mature European sentiment. America still has yet to grow up.

Don’t bring controversial politics into an otherwise enjoyable channel.
