  • Curtiss-Wright Surface Technologies offer a range of component coating services including laser peening.
Laser peening is making an important impact on industry, following the major transition from a laboratory research and development activity to reliable and production qualified technology. The technique induces exceptionally deep residual compresses stresses to enhance the fatigue strength and prevent crack irritation of critical metallic components. It also offers designers the ability to surgically place residual compressive stress into key areas of the components.

What is the major purpose of using a tampering layer? Is it to give the expansion of the plasma a resistance in order to transfer the pressure waves into the material?

To protect the metal from direct thermal heating, which will generate tensile residual stress and compromise surface integrity.

Think of it like blasting with dynamite. You can actually get better results with less if you match the inertial impedance. So yes.

@@changye7137 wouldnt the plasma pool and create a new smooth layer?
