Same with the Mazdaspeed Protégé... I don't know why they gotta be so rare! Obviously the speed 6 is the better car, but the protégé has so much sentimental value to me. My cousin bought an '03 slightly used in 06-ish, it's my first car love!
I spent so much time in that car, he had it forever until the head gasket or something went on it and our local "good ole boy" mechanic shop had a younger guy working there who told my cousin it needed a new engine which is almost impossible to find because of the rarity... It was gonna cost him WAY more than the car was worth to fix and he wouldn't have a car for weeks or even *months* so... He says I'll tell ya what, sell this thing to me since it's basically scrap at this point, forget about the cost of the repairs we've already done and on top of that I'll give you like 3 or 4 pennies.. Five if you're good at negotiating... Get some of your money back and get another car. Such a nice guy to do that for him.
We saw that mother fucker no longer than a week later daily driving it... Every day I had to see my cousins "Familia," my first love... Driven by some piece of shit mechanic that bent my cousin over and took advantage of him. Needless to say no one I know will ever take a car there if I have anything to say about it. I've never wanted to dump sugar into a gas tank more than I did that car.. Which seems pretty ironic huh? Lol. Sorry for the rant it just got me thinking. I wish I knew back then what I know now about cars... Even back then I knew right away my cousin got taken advantage of.

I had a ‘06 Mazdaspeed 6, exhaust, intake, turbo inlet, upgraded engine/trans mounts, plus the Cobb AccessPort the car was at around 300 wheel HP. The next step for me would have been the high pressure fuel pump internals.
I did the timing chain and VVT actuators myself with a friend over a weekend, loved this car and it was the perfect combination of fun, sporty and practical.
Also, it flies under the radar from cops, isn’t at high risk of being stolen or stripped..
The parts can be very expensive from the typical auto parts store, or unavailable.
The trick is to find good parts online and have them shipped to you.
Also knowing that the CX-7 turbo, the Mazdaspeed 3 and 6 all shared the same engine platform so that can help open the field when looking for parts

Unfortunately I crashed mine almost 2 years ago and sadly I haven’t found anything I’d say is a proper replacement to it. Besides the awd I’d also say what makes the speed 6 feel more confidence inspiring than the ms3 ( especially around some turns) is it has the rear chassis x brace, double wishbone front with multilink rear suspension and the rear diff has a lsd. I really miss mine. and the owner of this speed 6 seems like they have it really sorted out. So happy you finally got to drive one.

Even in it's completely stock form its an extremely fun car to drive, while also being extremely practical as a daily. I traded in a '12 Mazda 3 Hatchback for this thing, and for the MS6 being 6 years older, the ride quality was a HUGE step up from the *newer* Mazda 3. Love the 2.3 liter inline 4 cylinder turbo! Funny thing is Ford used a 2.3 liter turbo 4 cylinder engine WAY back in the Ford Mustang SVO. Later versions were of course put in the Mazdaspeed 6 as well as the Mazdaspeed 3. Then came the "EcoBoost" 2.3 liter 4 cylinder turbo in the Ford Focus RS! Sadly that AWD hot hatch was also discontinued like both the Mazdaspeed 6 and 3 were. Even the less potent, but still fun Ford Focus ST + Ford Fiesta ST also went to the graveyard. The 2.3 liter "EcoBoost" direct injection 4 cylinder turbo still lives-on strong in the current Ford Mustang base EcoBoost with even a "high performance" 2.3 liter EcoBoost slotting-in as an option on the Ford Mustang, basically a slightly "detuned" version of the old Ford Focus RS motor now set-up for longitudinal duty. Even more detuned versions of the turbocharged 2.3 liter are found in the 2020+ up Ford Explorer as the base engine, the Lincoln MK-X crossover SUV & it's the lone engine in the 2019+ up Ford Ranger pickup trucks. So much performance/tuning potential here! Would be SO awesome if Ford or Mazda could put this motor back into more cars, especially with AWD! I do love my 2020 Ford Ranger XLT with this engine mated with the 10 speed automatic. In my opinion hands down one of the best powertrains put into a "midsized" pickup truck!

While we were car shopping about 5-6 years ago, we were on a quest to find something fun with a stick shift. We stumbled on a grey Mazda 6 on a used Toyota lot and test drove it very reluctantly. We pulled out of the dealership and stepped on it, and were immediately like "Whoa! What the crap!", this car is super quick and made turbo noises, pulled over down the road, and stuck our head underneath to discover it's also AWD. The car had been debadged by the previous owner so we had no idea it was a Mazdaspeed6.
It had over a 100k miles, rusted rear wheel arches, and we couldn't get the dealer to get right on the price so we missed out on getting that one. But we ended up getting a 2012 Mazdaspeed 3 within the next month. Love that car so much. The MS6 was more refined and more appropriate as an everyday driver, but due to its age finding one with low milage and in good condition became an issue. And believe me, we looked.
It's sad what Mazda has become today. Mazdaspeed is dead and according to Masahiro Moro it will never be coming back. They want Mazda to build low rent Lexus, Acura, and Infinities now. It's super sad. Aside from the MX5 Mazda does not want any car enthusiast dollars. The days of "Zoom Zoom" and Mazdaspeed are gone. Go buy a CX-7 I guess, that's just as fun right? /s

I finally found on this year that was under 100k, almost stock with necessary upgrades (SRI intake, upgraded tmic, hpfp, rmm, cobb ap), and had the vvt replaced along with the turbo and both were done under warranty. I’ve been searching for one since 2013 when I bought my first ms3. At the time I never knew they existed either. So this past august I found the perfect one that was well maintained and as close to perfect that a 14yr old car can get. The best part is that the color is black cherry mica making its even more rare. I just cleaned the valves and added an occ last month. Purple Drank supplied me with an e-tune and she runs insanely well. Eventually I’ll start modding for huge hp gains but for now my goal is reliability. I love my 06 MS6 GT. #zoomzoom

I have one, but it doesn't mean it was easy to find. Especially one that's in good shape, no rust (!) and low mileage. Although I live in Sweden.

Used to have one in this color, GT with all options and the factory nav, no mods. They can be surprisingly fast, and when you get on it you can really feel when the AWD system engages the rear end. My kids loved how it handled too. The interiors don't take desert summer heat well at all though. Stuff just starts breaking and snapping without much effort, panel gaps between different surfaces grow with age, and in 2020 a fully loaded MS6 looks downright bargain basement. It may have been a complicated car in its time, but today it's a very analog car with no high-res screens, a lot of mechanical noises due to being an early DI engine, that turbo oiling issue, and its pretty stark interior simplicity.
I still miss mine; I'll acquire another one at some point.

Here in Germany it was known as "MPS" Mazda Performance Series. My dad had one of the first cars sold here in Germany back in early 2005. It was manual only. This was the first car I drove after I obtained my drivers license back when I was 18. Dad removed the stock airfilter and put one of those K&N cones on. I recall it having an all black leather interieur. Seeing a creme interieur seemes a bit odd to me as Mazda sold them speced up with the only option we were able to choose: 4 colors (white, grey, black and red) Navigation yes/no and sunroof yes/no.

I bought a 2007 speed6 & still have it. First, in 2007, at $40k CAN, it wasn't cheap but I think it was ahead of its time. I looked at Honda's accord, civic type S, Camry, Nissan & nothing could compare, this had more power & the only one with AWD. I believe Infinity had an AWD but no dealer close to me. Mine had the titanium grey and still looks amazing. It had issues with rear brakes since new & 1 major issue where a couple of cogs on the VVT broke & it jumped its timing, I was lucky it didn't do any damage to the motor. Even with those issues, I still like it and drive it everyday... it has $205k km and still looks like new. AWD is amazing in snow, I would rather drive that in snow than my 4x4 truck, it is just so predictable.

I had a 2005 Mazda 6. Manual. Loved it. Lease was up and I traded it in and bought a 2007 Mazspeed 3. Loved that. Had suspension issues though and turned it in. A few years later I bought a Mazdaspeed 6. I was expecting it to be more like the 3 but it was not. Not at all. It was a pig on gas and didn't seem to have the same torque as the 3. I still miss it though. I miss the Mazdaspeed in general. Thinking about finding another one. I have 2021 explorer now, the 2.3 awd. I went with this model becuase it's that engine. Great engine. Geared for the trick it tows 5500lbs!! In sport mode it's fairly fun. Big weight difference from the speed 3 and 6 but it's still a fun engine.

Had one for 7 years. Took it everywhere: Dirt roads, snow (and I live in Australia), 11 hours of roadtrip driving in a day, everything. Awesome car. Only sold it because Mazda just didn't provide parts any more.
Mind you, disagree with his comments on the clutch. In my experience EVERYONE stalled it the first time, it had a weird, long take-up.

Have a Speed 6 and I live in Houston.
I've seen maybe 3 around Houston besides mine. Currently have mine at full bolt ons and it's so fun! The problem is that if these cars are not well maintained and always at WOT, they will either jump timing or the turbo will go out. Parts are not as scarce yet. Love mine, its my daily driver for now.

I've owned a 2006 mazdaspeed 6 since 2008. Full bolt ons, bnrs3 turbo at 24 psi ( roughly 340 awhp) Kw suspension, evo 8 brembo brakes. The car is a riot. 266 xxx kms. It still shifts like butter.
The look I use to get spanking mustangs and Camaro's was priceless. I use to tell them it was the v6 mazda 6 lol 😆
