      It's due to a darker volume pot. Gibson has historically loaded their guitars with 300k pots while the industry puts 500k in P90s and humbucker models. Some players can't stand the muddiness that 300k pots do to neck pickups. So if you want a 'warmer' sounding Harley Benton then either find a 250k volume pot (measure to know if high/low side of the spec) or put a fixed resistor across the outer two lugs of the existing pot. If you use a 470k resistor (common to find) that way you'll have an effective 250-ish volume pot. The two penny fix. Or swap a few $100 pickups in there until you find a good match.

    • @user-lx3dn9bt9e
      @user-lx3dn9bt9e 3 года назад +1

      @@jvin248 i think the same, bro. But doesn't rolling back the tone knob of 500k pots do the as equal effect as changing 500k to 300k/250k? I mean will it sound sound the same with just 500k rolled back half-way?

    One thing: The Harley Benton has a real bridge that you can intonate instead of that ridiculous wrap around thing.

    Great comparison Dunsy! I always wondered about the HB double cut but never wanted to pull the trigger. I must say that the Gibson has a higher output pickup and sounded killer on the dirtier tones but the HB sounded all around, pretty good, I would not hesitate to get one after hearing this especially for the price. Thanks Man, I appreciate the work you put into this, it is very useful! ;)

      Thanks man - I had never played a HB before, so I wasn't sure what to expect, so I went for the cheapest of the DC's that they had. I'm very impressed with it. Build wise, you can't fault the Harley Benton DC Jr at all. I grabbed a Ltd Ed Pelham Blue DC Jr a few months back and the biggest comparative is the pickup. The Roswell is ok but it's 7.1k output is low and it definitely lacks in the low and low mid range compared to the Gibson P90. The original Gibbo P90 was around 7.5k as well but the newer made ones are around 9.6k which makes them beefier.
    However, I swapped the Harley Bentons Roswell for a Bare Knuckle Supermassive 90 (10.1k) and it's definitely on par with the Gibson P90. Not as thin and ice picky as the Roswell, but keeps it snarl and jangle.
    Acoustically the HB DC is very resonant and loud! Surprisingly so! It plays really well and once set up properly it's easy to forget your other guitars and find yourself reaching for the HB.
    The Harley is an amazing mod platform to make a low cost guitar into a real gig worthy guitar.

      Yeah, my pal Johnny grabbed one of those Pelham Blue ones (I think they're sold out now?) - he loves it. For the price point it's incredible what the HB folks can deliver. The Gibson has a much fuller sound, but with a pickup change I think the HB would be up there.

    This was a wonderful comparison. Very nicely done. My thoughts.... I own a Custom T.C. McInturff made to my specs and custom wired. I own a couple of Harley Bentons (CST models, absolutely stock). I grab the Harley Benton Guitars way more often. I'd rather abuse (actually not really "abuse"... just think wear & tear) a much less expensive guitar that plays and sounds pretty much the same to almost everyone's ears. Yes, I still play my really wonderful and MUCH MORE Expensive guitars and love them very much, but I'd rather put the wear on a $200.00 guitar than my multi-thousand dollar guitars.

    • @DunsysGuitarWorld
      @DunsysGuitarWorld  4 года назад +5

      Cheers Brent, really appreciate your comment. I'm 100% the same - I like both of these guitars. For the money that they cost, I'm happy with what I got in each case. To play, they are not the same guitar, but to most folks listening (which is really all I wanted the video to show) do they hear a £2000 difference? As the comments will testify there's not a huge difference when you just hear one against the other. But that doesn't mean I'm unhappy with the Gibson. It's a beautiful guitar. I'm glad I got it. That said, like you, I would rather take out the less expensive one to a show and rip on that without the worry.

    Both sound excellent to me! Put the same pickup on both guitars, equalize them the exact same way, do a blind test, and most people won't be able to guess which is which. I've seen that over and over again on RUclips. People think they know a budget guitar from an expensive one - until an honest blind test. What people spend their money on is their business. But, for me, I choose something that I don't have to worry about (theft, damage, etc) and has nearly the exact same sound/feel with upgrades and a decent set-up.

    So many people are talking about HB great value for money and they are right. I have 3 of them myself. But, few days ago I went to my guitar tech who is also making guitars ( Billy Gibbons and Lance Lopez are playing his guitars, among others ) and he told me this - maybe you will have 75 or 80% of Gibson tone on HB for small amount of money, but that 15 or 20% improvement is so hard to get. That is why Gibson is so expensive and even they can't make it all the time. Hard to hear difference live, but in studio...I bet you would all go for Gibson and it makes all the sense in the world.

    To my ears using my comp and cheap ass studio speakers the Gibson had just a slightly fuller warmer sound to it, which is not to say the Harley Benton sounded bad because it sounds great also. These are great times for getting usable good guitars for small money, it's great for all of us. I suspect swapping out the pickup and pots in the Harley for the Gibson stuff would make it almost identical in sound. Guitars !! It's a win either way :)

      Hey Rich, really appreciate you checking out the video and your comment. Yeah, I'm absolutely with you on how lucky we are these days that you can get this kind of quality for such a competitive price. Jeezo, remember what was available back in the 80's that was considered budget gear?! In this video the Gibson definitely has a warmer sound. The HB could definitely (imho) do with a pickup upgrade - but that would really be a matter of choice for whoever buys one - possibly the tuners, but that would be something I would need to check out at rehearsals and gigs. These are two completely different guitars to play, that's without a doubt. But they sound much more similar than the price difference would suggest. And, for me, I'm happy with what I got, for what I paid, with both of them. I always say people should buy to their budget and, if they're happy with the guitar they get, then that's all that matters. Thanks again, Sir.

    I have this model of Harley Benton and I think it's great, but I can't seem to get it to sound perfectly in tune, and although it has a bridge that can be intonated, I hear some of the same issues in all the demos I have seen of these guitars, and I hear it in yours too. I think the Gibson with its stop tailpiece bridge sounds to play in tune with itself better. Perhaps the HB's have a nut cut a bit too high. I made plastic shims to raise the whole pickup. I think it gave it more beef than just raising the polepieces. I thougt your demo really did a great job in illustrating what these guitars sound like. I liked the brighter cleans of the HB but the single note lead runs had that extra special secret Gibson sauce that they just seem to have. I have a Custom Shop 58 Standard Historic Les Paul yhat cost the big bucks, but it also has a lot of that elusive classic 50's tone so iy is not going up for sale. Ever. But my HB single hangs in my studio and it hangs on the same wall as my beloved bourbonburst, and it looks just fine there. I'll bet the HB FAT Junior is even closer.

I like the idea of putting a shim in to raise it too, good thinking. The Gibson, even though it doesn't have a proper intonated bridge, seemed to have better intonation for me. Not sure why that would be. But it's a beautiful guitar, expensive tho! Really appreciate you checking it out.

    • @jvin248
      @jvin248 3 года назад

      Focus on nut setup, 90% of tuning issues happen there. Nearly all the playing in the video is up by the nut too where intonation is to match higher frets better anyway. Nut slots are likely just a little high.The other common issues is if the guitar was set up with 9s at the factory and then restrung with 10s by the owner the nut slots can bind and intonation will certainly be off.

      Hey Michael, really appreciate you checking it out. That was absolutely my purpose for this video, simply checking out the sounds from both of these guitars. I'm glad I own both of them, they are different to play, but that's a video for another day! I'd have no hesitation recommending either depending on whichever fits your budget. My pal Johnny got the bigger neck Harley Benton and he loves it. The neck on this standard one is more akin to a 60's Gibson profile, maybe a wee bit more substantial, but not a lot. The neck on the Gibson is MASSIVE - I believe it is '57 period correct - my pal Loz, a very good player, felt it was a wee bit too much. I guess it just depends on your preference.

    • @AndyRayZed
      @AndyRayZed 4 года назад +3

      the FAT is a fatter neck profile for sure, not baseball bat fat, more like 24 at 1st instead of 20mm and 29 at 14th instead of 25mm.
      For what it's worth the HB plays really nice but the pickup is pretty rubbish if you roll off the tone and isn't that great in genuine single coil mode, maybe the standard Roswell is ok but the 'hum bucking' stacked p90 is nothing like the true Gibson / Lollar / Fralin p90 sound which all have great tone in all positions, not just full tilt.
      The HB (Wilkinson?) bridge is a little bulky and doesn't allow for lowering action too much.
      The HB (Wilkinson) tuners are ok but usually need winding right back nearly a turn before coming up to tune.
      The HB is made of probably at least 3 or 4 pieces of wood ( if that bothers you )
      Other than that, the DC FAT HB is pretty amazing and doesn't have the typical fretboard shrinkage like a Gibson is likely to have - it's just aesthetic but it's a thing !
      Also the ebony fretboard on the HB DC FAT is pretty sweet and Gibson doesn't do a 'FAT' neck that i know of in a Jr or Special.
      Change pickup, bridge and wiring and it's pretty damn good with ebony board and fatter neck :)
      ps. the Satin finish is great too, no sticky neck, it's a lot of Gibson-esque guitar for the $$s

  • @Dad-Gad
    @Dad-Gad 4 года назад +1

    Which one feels smoother to play ? I've got a Harley Benton Lemondrop and to my ears it will match any Gibson LP , but the fretboard is burnt maple or something and I just can't get on with it . On the other hand I've got a PRS custom 24 , plays like butter , sounds muffled 😕

    • @DunsysGuitarWorld
      @DunsysGuitarWorld  4 года назад +1

      Genuinely, the Gibson is a much better playing guitar than the HB - and I'm not in any way advocating dropping a considerable amount of $ on a Gibson CS! - HB do a fantastic guitar for the money. In fact, how they do it I don't know (although I expect it's economy of scale). This one plays really nice and sounds decent, although I'm not convinced that the stock pickup will handle rehearsal and gigging volume, but I've yet to try that. I always say buy to your budget - if your budget is HB, then this is an absolutely killer guitar for the money. If you can stretch to a used Gibson CS Junior (new, this is waaaay out of my price range) then I would say that you would not be wasting your money. They make really nice guitars.

    ...sorry guys, this "little bit more" of the gibson is just in your heads. if you scroll down, reading the comments while listening you can´t say which guitar is played at the moment. Physics can´t be tricked by a logo on a headstock and there is no magic wood (tonewood and eletrical guitars...what a joke...) what makes the guitar sound good. I own several gibsons and i love them... but if I put all my SG´s together they all sound a bit different because of one simple reason: they all are different guitars! They have different pickups and there is a bit of tolerance with the potentiometers... and so on...
    if you rip out wiring harness and pickup of the Junior and throw it into the HB I bet you will hear no difference in a blindtest. And here we are... most guitar players hear with their eyes... and at least: if the drummer kicks in you wouldnt be able to tell the difference between both guitars. So don´t let people judge your music or your playing by the logo an the headstock. just ignore them. Buy the guitar you like, set it up well and have fun playing it

    The double cutaway single pickup is a very simple guitar. IMHO spending thousands on one is madness because as HB show here its not difficult to make a good copy of the guitar cheaply because its a very simple concept.

    This is such and awesome video! The gibson sounds better, but the HB is 80 to 90% of the sound. For the money 💰 you just can't beat it. I was looking closely at the HB fat sky blue, p90 and humbuckers with a switch. I really feel like dollar value you just can't beat it. Thanks for the comparison! It really helps see exactly what solid value you're getting!

    The HB does sound brighter, but honestly, if your not a gear snob, the HB is the one to get, even if you were to mod it with top of the line parts, you would not come close to the price of a Gibson, let alone a custom shop.

  • @BigAirNo1
    @BigAirNo1 3 года назад +2

    Although I'm aware of the sheer overall quality difference between the two, I wasn't expecting there to be a drastic difference in tone, but listening on a good pair of reference headphones the HB sounded "ok" but from the first note on the Gibson, you can really hear why it costs what it does. It's a completely different dimension. There's 100s of Gibson/HB comparisons online and for me it's always the same result.
    Yes you could put a better pickup in the HB which would get it closer in terms of sound but there's far more to the equation than just the pickup. To get the HB on the same page as the Gibson, sound, feel and durability wise, you would need to change the pickup, pots and electrics, the bridge, the nut, the tuners and most likely the frets will need to be either looked at or changed. By the time you've done all that, it'll have cost you the same as buying the Gibson and even withall those upgrades, you're still left with the low grade wood with a thick poly finish, questionable workmanship in places and a truss rod that probably won't stand up to the rigours of the road.
    Don't get me wrong, I'm no snob, I've owned and own guitars from all price ranges and i can say that HB are great value for money in their price range, great for beginners to start off with a good quality instrument for a sensible price tag, great for people who want to try a specific type of guitar, to see if they like it, without spending a fortune and great for non gigging guitarists that want a half about guitar to play at home. They just don't compare to the quality, sound, feel, workmanship, durability and heritage that you get with Gibson! Or Fender or PRS for that matter.

    To me, the Gibson sounds a little more full sounding, and a little darker( but you would expect that because it has more wood, less cutaway) but to me, the double cut is better looking, and so similar sounding I would choose it for myself regardless of the price difference!

      I remember a friend I was in a band with - sadly no longer with us - went to try out a Gretsch White Falcon (this would have been 1990) and when the guy in the guitar shop asked what amp he wanted to try it through, he said "have you got a full length mirror?", lol, he had a shot (without plugging it into an amp), looked in the mirror and decided it looked too big on him and bought a Silver Jet instead. You should absolutely always go for a guitar that looks best on you in a full length mirror, that's the spirit of Rock and Roll!

    Both sound really good. As I have come to expect with my own HArley Benton, SC L1000, the stock pickups are have the same plastic sound. At the price point though even with a pick upgrade HB's are great value.

      I agree I binned the Roswell in my fusion asap as dynamic as a plastic jelly pot. Quality control can be a gamble with HB they’re great for the money and once had a set up and checked out all the parts for faults. My floyd anchors started lifting out on the fusion. Removed the floyd pulled the anchors cleaned then tightbonded them in. Now it’s rock solid but to a beginner or someone with no guitar repair skills it’s a lot of hassle sending back to Germany especially for those in the States.

    Yeah...the Gibson smokes that HB. Your preamp input is too hot on the Gibson clean, causing it to distort. Otherwise, nice playing and demo.
    That said, I have a real 59 DC, and it absolutely destroys that CS. It’s disappointing to hear that Gibson can’t get close to replicating their vintage guitars.
    I get that you have to cater to your current audience, so let the teenagers and 20 somethings buy up the HBs to their heart’s content. Maybe one day they’ll actually play a vintage Gibson, and understand the difference.

      Mi opinión es solo con el audio que tenemos en esta review, se nota la Gibson un sonido más compacto , rico , con más armónicos y definición . Entiendo el atractivo de la Harley Benton el diseño y la calidad está muy bien para el precio . Muy buena relación calidad precio . Pero cuando ya tocas con este segmento de guitarras en el entorno de grupo te das cuenta enseguida que no llega a tener un sonido rico .Si sirve para tocar en tu cuarto en casa .
      Me pasa a mi con mi strato st 58 ,bien regulada como cuerdas buenas y cuando toco con mi grupo me la descuelgo en la segunda canción .
      Un abrazo .
