at 17:43 when Cab Calloway says "Hit it!" and the curtains open - for me the costume and set change means magic happens when Cab holds the stage. Love that scene.
Cab still had it in 1980
My dad saw him in Harlem in the 30’s!
***CAB CALLOWAY*** The Old man dressed in white singing "MINI THE MOOCHER" is the LATE LEGEND ***CAB CALLOWAY*** a big band leader and singer from the 40's up until this movie was his last known appearance.
And he still killed it.
Co-band leader alongside Louis Armstrong at the Cotton Club.
Cab Calloway continued to perform publicly until 1993, a little before his death in 1994. He was in Janet Jackson's "Alright" music video in 1990.
@@jb888888888 thanks. He was one of the GREATS. :)
Nobody leaves in John Lee Hooker. It breaks my heart.
Hear, hear!
I was looking... You are right... Ahh haw haw haw haw
They don’t know Blues music...sad
So true.
A HAW HAW HAW HAW!!!!!
For all the music legends in the movie, the crazy thing is, for them it was a paying gig. Artists like Aretha and Ray just weren't in high demand in the late 70s. The movie went a long way toward revitalizing their careers.
Mr. T was an extra in this film. Says it's where he got his start.
Exactly.
By the end of the '70s, blues, jazz, black gospel, soul, and even funk were all eclipsed by disco. The Blues Brothers effectively turned a whole new generation on to the classics.
Fun fact: The Blues Brothers held the record for Most Cars Destroyed (and I mean real cars) in the course of production for 18 years, at 103...
Then The Broke the record in Blues Brothers 2000... Haha
And its Steven Spielberg as the clerk.
I know it, and broke their own record in Blues Brothers 2000
The theme song is known as the Peter Gunn theme, from the show Perer Gunn, it was also the theme for the Spy Hunter video game series, the version played in this film is performed by the Blues Brothers Band, Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi also do their own singing and dancing for the group, if you're a fan The Blues Brothers have a couple of albums outside of what's on the soundtrack.
The guy playing on the street before they go into the diner with Aretha Franklin, That's John Lee Hooker. That's Cab Calloway singing his hit, Minnie the Moocher.
Cab was amazing while he was great in this film in his early days he could jump and dance like he was weightless. Great talent.
Blues Brothers is not a white or black movie. Its a great movie with great lines and even better songs. It is a showcase of greatness. John Lee Hooker, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin with the backing band and all mentioned and celebrated. To narrow it down to an insult is strait up wrong. It us perfect.
Legends... All around.. legends.
Don't forget even Chaka Kahn is in it.
They actually found a mall that was scheduled to be torn down, fixed up all the shops and drove the cars through it. You couldn't do this today.
Yep, that was the Dixie Square Mall in Harvey, Il. south of Chicago.
if you dont know now you know - the bald guy with the used condom is frank oz - the voice of mrs. piggy and yoda
The man who sang Minnie the Moocher is the LEGENDARY Cab Calloway.
Others have mentioned the band, but...seriously, look up Steve Cropper, "Duck" Dunn, Matt Murphy and so on. They're *LEGENDS.* Involved with basically every major R'n'B artist of the 60's-70's.
I lived in Joliet at the time. For years you could drive up to Chicago and along the highway there was an auto junkyard with dozens of trashed cop cars in it.
I saw this at a drive-in theater. It was a double feature with Animal House!!! I was about 13, so it was a perfect eve.
oh wow that sounds amazing! i love Animal House! Hope you liked the video & if you did Please LIKE & consider subscribing for more videos like this
@@FlixTalk I have the extended version of this film. In the end before they go to play at the Palace Hotel Ballroom, they blow up the gas station in the extended version. The mall they tore apart was an abandoned mall in Harvey, Illinois. The gas station that gets blown up and the hotel where Twiggy winds up, were literally walking distance from my house. Best to you and yours. Stay safe and be well.
The Blues Brothers aged well into the present
Animal House did not age well into the present
@@caras2004 That's why AH is wonderful.
Two cameos you did not mention:
1:29 The jail guard who gives back Jake's belongings is Frank Oz, voice of Yoda and all around legend.
22:35 The taxman who takes their money is a young Steven Spielberg.
I would give this another shot if I were you: I saw this movie on VHS a little while after it first came out. I wasn't an SNL fan, and I only watched it because my brother told me it had Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles. Like you, I felt once was enough; then when my brother would re-watch it in the living room, I would too, and I started noticing all sorts of wonderful details in addition to all the great music and the great musicians. There's a terrific build-up to the last big chase, with everyone going after them; there's a great relationship between Akroyd and Belushi, the car becomes a member of the team and gives up it's life for them (the expression on Akroyd's face at the collapse always makes me laugh and cry at the same time), and though I'm not from Chicago, I feel this movie is a twisted love letter to the city. From indifference, I began to really like it, and it's now a favorite of mine. I say you should give it another go.
On a side note for Matt "Guitar" Murphy, who is married to Aretha Franklin in the movie. You should check out one of his early gigs filmed in black and white.
Matt Murphy - Murphy's Boogie 1963 (live)
His playing is awesome, and got to love his expressive face and those eyebrows of his.
So many legends hidden in this movie, and i believe quite a few are not even credited.
You see, the mall was actually shuttered since the 70's, but they build all the scenery with the shops just for the movie. And at the end, the whole armies of policemen and military and so on, they weren't actors or something like that, they were the real police and military from chigaco. You see it in the credits as well "with thanks to: the city of chicago; the chigaco police" and so on. So, like you said, it's not made with much special tricks or cgi, but with just good choreography, for the police scene at the end for example.
***RECORD BREAKER*** This movie broke the record for most car crashes in a single movie I believe 250. The record was held until the early 2000 when the SEQUIL broke the record by 1 more car
Don't forget Chaka Khan in the church with James Brown
This is the ONLY movie that I saw every week for over a year! I absolutely love it so much!
You watched the extended version which is 15 minutes longer than the original theatrical cut. Personally, I prefer it. For me it is a bit of a shame that they couldn't restore the originally intended "roadshow" version which was 3 hours long.
I guess my ADD kicks in after a while lol
@@FlixTalk The theatrical cut is much tighter story editing. The extended version adds full musical performances, at the expense of the pacing. The theatrical version is a better first experience.
Most people believe that the reason why all that outlandish shit in the movie from the Blues Brothers surviving explosions, a building collapsing and the insanity that was the final car chase was all because of Divine Intervention. Think about it, they were on a "Mission from God" and once something wasn't needed any more, reality would immediately ensue. Like the car collapsing into pieces once they didn't need it anymore to the Brother getting arrested the moment they completed their mission.
Makes sense
@@FlixTalk Fun fact: the gas station they blow up towards the end of the film (extended version) before they go to their big show at the Palace Hotel Ballroom and the motel where Twiggy winds up while waiting for Elwood, was walking distance from my house.
I love how when the Nazis crashed through the street, the Bluesmobile had already made it back down to that exact spot. So ridiculous you have to love it.
If I remember correctly the band was the original SNL band.
The Blues Brothers were originally a sketch on SNL.
Except for Paul Shaffer and I believe the drummer... But Shaffer helped put together the band as he was the band leader on SNL at the time.
In the final concert, having the band dressed up and with a nice setup represents how they felt playing in front of a packed house.
Also, all of the band members were actual musicians, not actors.
Cropper and Dunn were behind much of Otis Redding's music.
Nope, it was a throw back to Cab Calloway's Big Band era. The song he sang was his own, and he was the first Black singer to have a single song sell one million records.
I believe most, if not all, were former SNL musicians.
Murphy Donne was an actor who could also play the piano. He took the part Paul Shaffer was supposed to have.
He knows he's 100 percent seen this before
Every musician in here is a legend.
The Ford Pinto station wagon, they dropped from a helicopter for the exterior shots. It remains, to this day the only Ford Pinto to have been registered with the FAA
I almost fell out of my seat laughing with that lol
@@FlixTalk The gas station at the end of the film before they go up to the Palace Hotel Ballroom and the motel where Twiggy ends up were walking distance from my house. Dug your review of this classic film. Stay safe and be well.
44 years ago today, June 20, 1980, "The Blues Brothers" opened at a theater near you.
“We’re On A Mission From God”
The story's just an excuse to hang a whole bunch of comedy bits, action scenes, and musical numbers on...the movie IS its excesses. You wouldn't want to see a pared down to the core version of this.
There was a huge backlash at the time to both this and Steven Spielberg's 1979 film 1941. Critics REALLY took Landis and Spielberg both to task for the exremely high budgets (1941's was $40 mill) and what they saw as adolescent humor in their scripts. There'd be some reassment later on, especially for Blues Brothers. And speaking of 1941...you really should do a reaction to that!
Kind of like Animal House if you break it down.
I miss the old days where the studios had no problem buying 200 cars to destroy in their movies. Today this scenes only make in CGI.
I don’t know that that’s actually that bad. But practical effects do have their charm. I think the Mandalorian is a good compromise, plenty of classic star wars practical prosthetics and explosions married with bleeding edge on-site cgi.
the car did a back flip at the end with the help of our almighty , remember they were on a mission from god
I wish this movie was an hour longer.
The FIRST movie built around SNL characters. Started when it was an idea for a musical interlude in the show. Audiences loved it. They even toured as the Blues Brothers, and made a couple albums.
I remember watching them on SNL. Including the band.
Fun fact: the guy eating a sandwich on the desk, who they recieved the receipt is Steven Spielberg
The movie is a celebration of the blues. That is the point of all the Music star appearances.
This is the first film based off a "Saturday Night Live" sketch. As The Blues Brothers, they once opened up an SNL episode with a great cover of the Sam and Dave classic "Soul Man". You should have a look at that sometime.
Its a great set or characters
@@FlixTalk They did a sequel, "Blues Brothers 2000", but that was released in 1998, and it had John Goodman joining Dan Aykroyd. Not exactly the best sequel.
The sequel is HORRIBLE. One of the worst movies ever made.
I've heard!
The SNL sketch was also done in the episode that Carrie Fisher herself had hosted!
This is a classic film that they don't usually make that kind of stunt action and comedy film anymore because it is one of my favorite musical artists of these guys that made the film to show family and friends to have fun with music
This is the only musical my musical hating friend loves because it has something that everyone can enjoy.
FUN FACT: Look closely at the Cook County Clerk (the guy who takes the money at the end)... it's Steven Spielburg!
What most of you guys don’t get is those car chase scenes. Those cars did not handle even slightly like today’s vehicles. Nothing like them. Imagine driving your living room couch down the road is what it was like. Leaning sliding braking was terrible on those huge boats. So what they did was amazing
One of the most successful movies of the 1980’s
Youngster Millenials just don't appreciate fun movies. Newer movies don't hold a candle to this. I loved this when I saw in the theater 40 years ago.
If you noticed the members of the band are not the best actors it’s because they are some of the worlds finest musicians, most from Memphis’s legendary STAX records,
Another little known celebrity cameo in this film was the clerk the gave the $5000 to at the en of the movie. That was none other than Steven Spielberg.
Yes that's Carrie Fisher, at the time she was Dan Aykroyds fiancée. Later she left him for Paul Simon. Also the clerk at the end of the movie, Steven Spielberg.
John Landis found an abandoned Mall and had stores put in to make it authentic and then car chase in the mall was epic.
The movie was that long not because they were padding it, but they (Belushi and Aykroyd) were wanting to showcase some of Blues and R&B LEGENDS. Which included James Brown, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, John Lee Hooker, with cameos by Chaka Khan, Stephen Bishop and Joe Walsh (not to mention the five-star musicians in the actual Blues Brothers Band: those guys were NOT actors, they were all legendary performers in their own right!). They wanted this movie to be funny (and it was!) but also be a tribute to Blues and R&B. And Aretha Franklin's career actually had a resurgence after this film came out.
They also held the record for a car flying to the ground and the height at which shit fell
Carrie Fisher's alter ego here.... evil Princess Leia.
Lol seriously
I’m not sure if anyone commented on this, but you mentioned records in the car wrecks this movie did hold the record for the number of cars destroyed. Not sure if that’s been broken, but they held the record at the time one other comment the scene with the guy five minutes returning with Steven Spielberg.
Lots of people mentioned it, so yes. Just so you know, they broke their own record in the sequel.
This is the director’s cut of the movie
I don't know about Black Church myself, but my mom was Pentecostal in Tennessee and she said the church scene reminds her of when she use to go to her church as a kid.
You haven't lived until you've been in one. I am Canadian and Black and I went to a Black American Church and it was fantastic. Also to let you know that Chicago, Ill, is a "Mecca" For African Americans. Those Folks in the Church are probably from Mississippi and Memphis. Chicago is home to Chess Records, whose Artists Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Bo Diddley, and Chuck Berry. It's also home to Ebony Magazine that went Bankrupt last year and the "Original" Location for Soul Train.
If you want to wear authentic Blues Brothers sunglasses, you have to pick up Ray-Ban Wayfarers. Still makin' 'em.
The scene with Cab Calloway was different because he was from an earlier era, maybe more around the time of Duke Ellington.
Actually that style hat is called a pork pie. Don't ask me why.
The mall was slated for demolition... they set up the mall to look like it was actually open and filmed the chase scene
@1:41 The great director Frank Oz and the original voice of Yoda.
and Miss Piggy
John Belushi was Chris Farley"s inspiration
One of THE best movies ever!
got to remember at the time of this movie, those A lister acts were all on the dregs of their backsides, many were broke and had been ripped off blind and bled dry by their Record Companies and Agents. Soul, Gospel and R&B was actually dying out at the time.
Part of Ackroyds intention was to revitalise the music industry and bring in some sorely needed cash for the old legends and help everyone out by putting the spotlight squarely back on them all where it belonged.
It worked.
I've seen both movies dozens of times and never noticed the nun was from Gremlins 2. Nice catch!
Looks like you were watching the extended DVD cut of the film which contains a lot of extra footage that wasnt in the original release. I think the original release was just under 2 hours.
What you called the theme song in the beginning is the song Green Onions by Booker T & The MG's
I just realized my mistake. This is The Peter Gunn Theme.
Jim Belushi is famous for playing the Samurai chef in SNL
It's not a real Black Baptist church if the building isn't jumping off the foundations every sunday! 😆
"Are you the police"? "No, ma'am. We're musicians."
You're Crazy.
Four Outta Four Stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
The guy in the steam room was Steve Lawrence from the Steve and Edie singing group in the 50's and 60's.
Beautiful movie
I saw James Brown live twice. It was too funky!!! Straight soul music! Only thing about him was his best friend. Stayed by his coffin for 3 hours. That was Elvis😊
It's criminal how many people don't recognize Cab Calloway.
The black church is SUPER SPIRITUAL. That scene is epic!!!!!
Never judge a movie by the directors cut! This is a great movie.
County collector was played by the man himself Steven Spielberg
"James Brown? Oh, he's young!"
He was old at the time. He got even older is all.
Sad how SO many of the cast, the band, and the cameos are no longer with us.
5:00 yep, I went to a church like this; this could have been a surveillance camera on our services - it was awesome! No tossing in the air - I guess no one had suggested it, yet!
Yes that is Carrie Fisher
Took me a while but yes lol
minni the moocher wasn't a costume change, it was an expression of style.
12:48 8 years later that kid would be John McClane’s limo driver.
11:23 --- I miss fire breathing V-8 engines with massive 4 barrel carbs... That roar when they opened up is something you just don't hear anymore...
Young people today have a short ATTENTION span, no wonder you want everything shorter. Give me a break.
I loved The Irishman and that movies 3 Hours 30 min...also one of my favorite movies Shawshank Redemtion is almost the same length as this film. Whats your point?
@@FlixTalk Those are not older movies. Today's movies are all shock and awe, special effects, and vulgar jokes. Older movies are about dialogue, psychological thriller, and deep insight into humanity and culture(different from today).
@@sandym4839 agree to disagree
It's a Road Runner cartoon with music.
And young Chaka Khan, Steven Spielberg too.
Actually the theme song is the theme to "Peter Gunn ". A TV show back in the 60s.
Carrie Fisher looked so beautiful here. 😍 Even when she was trying to assassinate someone. 😆
R.I.P. Carrie Fisher🕊 ❤️
You'll always be our princess.👸
Would it at all surprise you to know that cocaine was heavily used during the production of this movie (it even had its own dedicated part of the budget)
"I don't know anything about this movie"
_[intentionally dresses like the Blues Brothers]_
Haha well I saw the poster obviously.
growing up i went to a Pentecostal church that would that it was fun times
The Pope actully was in town and actully stopped by and blessed the set.
The chicken wire used to be a real thing in the rowdier honky tonks.
The truth be told that theme music is the theme of the 60s TV show, 📺 Peter Gunn.
Cameo: The guy giving him his personal effects is Frank Oz of The Muppets/Yoda fame.
Actually Carrie Fisher was engaged to Dan Aykroyd when this movie was made.
And that was Cab Calloway singing Minnie The Moocher.
Back in high school, I kinda looked like John. So for a Halloween party I went as Jake Blues. Freak the adults out because they went to high school with John. And yes, that is Carry Fisher. Also, all these locations were filled in Chicago and the Chicago suburbs. The Gas Station scene was film was filmed in West Chicago, which is where I live. It’s just a empty lot now. But the actual gas station sat their for a couple of decades after this movie was filmed.
The mall was real. The mall was about to be torn down, so they got permission to use it for the chase scene.
Fun fact the store was acutely abondend they build it
Man this is old. I remember your old channel banner
