  • The United States has seized a luxury jet frequently used by Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, alleging that its acquisition violated U.S. sanctions and export control laws. The U.S. Department of Justice announced on Monday that the Dassault Falcon 900EX was flown from the Dominican Republic to Florida after being detained on suspicions that it was purchased through a shell company to circumvent U.S. sanctions.
The seizure of the aircraft marks a significant escalation in the already tense relations between the U.S. and Venezuela. The Venezuelan government, which confirmed that President Maduro had used the plane, swiftly condemned the action, describing it as “piracy” and “a repeated criminal practice” by the United States. "Once again, the authorities of the USA, in a recurring criminal practice that could not be labeled anything but piracy, have illegally seized an aircraft that has been used by the president of the Republic," read a statement from the Venezuelan government.
U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland stated that the plane, valued at $13 million, was illegally purchased in 2022 through a Caribbean-based shell company, a move allegedly aimed at concealing its connection to Maduro. The aircraft was subsequently exported from the U.S. to Venezuela in violation of an executive order that prohibits American entities from conducting business with representatives of Maduro's regime. "Let this seizure send a clear message: aircraft illegally acquired from the United States for the benefit of sanctioned Venezuelan officials cannot just fly off into the sunset," said Matthew Axelrod, Assistant Secretary for Export Enforcement at the U.S. Commerce Department.
The seizure comes at a time when Maduro faces mounting pressure domestically and internationally following a contested presidential election on July 28, which he claims to have won. However, the opposition has disputed this, stating that its candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, received the most votes based on their copies of vote tallies.
The U.S. congratulated González on his victory and urged the Venezuelan government to provide credible evidence of the election's outcome. The White House National Security Council stated that the seizure was "an important step to ensure that Maduro continues to feel the consequences from his misgovernance of Venezuela."
This action is part of a broader U.S. strategy aimed at applying economic and political pressure on the Maduro government. Over recent years, U.S. agencies have seized several assets, including luxury vehicles and planes, linked to Venezuela's ruling elite. In 2020, the U.S. Department of Justice charged Maduro and several high-ranking officials with narco-terrorism, drug trafficking, and corruption. The State Department has also offered a $15 million reward for information leading to Maduro's arrest or conviction.
The aircraft's seizure also underscores the U.S. government's ongoing efforts to crack down on Maduro’s administration and its affiliates for their alleged involvement in corrupt practices, money laundering, and sanctions violations. U.S. officials worked closely with authorities in the Dominican Republic, who were alerted to the plane's presence and had received an order to immobilize it last May.
Maduro's government has dismissed the seizure as illegal and unjustified, accusing the U.S. of hypocrisy and of using its economic and military power to bully smaller countries. It cited recent election controversies in the U.S. and Brazil to argue that other nations have no right to interfere in Venezuela's electoral processes.
Venezuelan officials maintain that the plane was used for official state visits, including a recent trip to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. They have also noted that it was involved in the December 2023 prisoner swap involving Alex Saab, a businessman close to Maduro who had been detained in the U.S. on money laundering charges.
This latest move by the U.S. could further strain relations between Washington and Caracas, particularly as Western countries continue to question the legitimacy of Maduro's rule and apply economic and political pressure on his government. The dispute over the election's outcome, combined with the seizure of the presidential aircraft, signals a potentially turbulent period ahead for Venezuela's already embattled leader.
The situation continues to evolve, with many watching to see if this escalation will lead to further punitive measures or diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis between the U.S. and Venezuela.
