Would a space based TV show that delved into the supernatural work? Robert Bloch, a long time friend of HP Lovecraft, wrote the one with spooky castle, although he hated the lame ending with the stupid puppets, but I think and occult sci-fi show in space would seem interesting indeed.

Excellent material rendered by a first rate cast with taut direction and a cinematic eye (for the time and intended screen) makes this a true entertainment find.

I saw this movie once on television in 1977. Gene Roddenberry wanted to have another hit television series on his hands following the success of Star Trek. Interesting concept. Criminology meets the occult. I Spy meets Doctor Strange. A unique combination of horror, mystery and fantasy. But I guess NBC didn't want to go over budget with its television projects during the 1970s. Unfortunate this pilot didn't inspire a series. It would have been good. I certainly liked the cast. Robert Culp. Gig Young. Majel Barrett. John Hurt. James Villiers. RIP to them all.

Especially now that we have better effects and so many TV and other channels that could produce this supernatural type detective series. Great concept and nasty demon. We've only recently begun to have similar type demons as bad guys in our movies. Fun old made for TV movie.

Movies like this were not so sensationalized like they are now. The cinematography, the script, the plot and sub-plot twists, the acting all played a part in making things more subtle just as the subject matter which was treated in these older movies were subtle. Unlike today's movies. And the subject matter was informed by research into such things as the occult to help establish a kind of authority and the possibility of realism, not the make things up as you go bullshit we see know in today's horror movies.

And the subject matter was informed by research into such things as the occult to help establish a kind of authority and the possibility of realism, not the make things up as you go bullshit we see know in today's over-sensationalized horror movies. The acting in today's movies are questionable because the actors themselves possess a lack of character, that is to say many are too young, immature and rudderless and lack proper guidance to begin with. Special effects - with exception to the over-emphasis on cgi which also lacks both the subtlety of what is natural, supernatural and organic, capturing very little sense of realism to anchor the phantasmagoric in - and other enhancements should only be secondary or as only a modification to the themes that are treated in good horror movies.

I was a teen too when I first saw this. It would make a great tv show now. I wonder if the same would apply to Bruce playing Bill's Sebastian

@sledge hammer But the story was good so gore wasn't needed. Gargoyles was another cool movie as was the unforgettable Trilogy of Terror with everyone's favorite Zuni warrior doll. And William Shatner did Nightmare at 30,000 feet to cash in on the Exorcist.

    • @4thdoctor284

@sledge hammer I'm in the middle of making a Zuni warrior for a friend that hosts horror movies. I figured that she could you a skit about it when the chain falls off and it animates. It's funny the Six Million Dollar Man also started out as a movie of the week and got great ratings. So did Man From Atlantis and V. I liked the Lizzy Bordon movie that I think CBS did with Elizabeth Montgomery as Lizzie. Salem's Lot and The Last Dinosaur I remember. And the real funny thing was The Bermuda Depths became a sort of online cult movie with discussion groups and web sites devoted to it. My grandfather's favorite was Killdozer since he was a heavy machinery mechanic and welder and he had his own bulldozer. TV will never quite be as fun or entertaining as those days. I mean when else would you see Kiss Meets The Phantom but in the 70's.

    • @4thdoctor284
      @4thdoctor284 5 лет назад +1

@sledge hammer It's too bad the lure of easy money killed local TV stations with infomercials and later the dread reality TV shows. I remember rushing off the bus from first grade so I'd get ready in time for the afternoon movie when they had Giant Monster week. The next day in school we were all excitedly talking about how Godzilla kicked the crap out of King Ghidorah or Gamera nearly getting his leg cut off by Gyaos' sonic cutter beam. Funny that you mentioned scuba diving. My friend was a scuba diver so one night he decided on us going on a night dive in Lake Ontario. Not only was this my first night dive but my first time scuba diving period. He had a yoke set up on his tank so we each had our own regulator. I already knew all the safety basics like never hold your breath or just shoot to the surface from any appreciable depth if you didn't want nitrogen narcosis. All those episodes of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea were finally paying off. So we wrapped a couple crappy flashlights up in Saran Wrap and into the murky depth we went. You can't see much of anything on a night dive in Lake Ontario especially with our sad excuses for lights. I had a big carp swim right up yo my diving mask attracted by the light. He wasn't at all alarmed until I tapped him on the head.

It would be impossible for a reboot/re-imagining/remake/retelling of the uncensored version of Gene Roddenberry's Spectre in the present. With the Disney Corporation owning 20th Century Fox Pictures and 20th Century Fox Television, Disney Pictures and Disney Television would never, ever make an action-adventure/crime drama/dark, adult fantasy/horror live action movie or live action T.V. series that has adult themes, brief nudity, sexual situations and violence. This story is just way too dark, grim and gritty. It would be the equivalent of either a Rated R theatrical film or a Rated T.V.-M.A. Cable television show on H.B.O. Disney will never go dark so they will not allow it.
And even if it could be hypothetically updated into a much more modernized and contemporary version of the story, with the way that Hollywood has become completely soy woke, the early 21st century version of Gene Roddenberry's Spectre would be accused of being racist for having an all-white cast, sexist for having women show their breasts, and homophobic for not having any gay characters. Even if it was partly made by the B.B.C. because it was filmed entirely on location at the U.K., they would change the entire cast into an all-black cast, the women would be the main characters and everyone would be gay.
So in a way, while it is unfortunate that a good horror movie like this one had never become a series back in 1977, I'm kinda sorta glad that this story was also never remade into a new version today because that shit would get totally ruined by S.J.W./N.P.C. Politically Correct outrage culture bullshit.

In my young mind I associated shows and movies like this to literary fiction like Saloozy, a short story by Margery Lawrence in Andre Norton's "Small Shadows Creep", featuring a character that appeared in other similar stories akin to Culp's in this, and later channeled this when gamemastering sessions of Pacesetter's Chill horror RPG.

I must admit that from the 70s this was good as some of his other projects were. This was the time that Roddenberry was seeking a new franchise and making pilots for TV. However Paramount (NBC at the time) poisoned the well so to speak. It was hot until Star Trek and kept making money and Star Wars came out and made a BILLION Dollars that all was forgiven between Roddenberry and Paramount.

And now that I've sat through this, given my first impression at its Stateside network premiere with interminable commercial interruptions even then...well, they tried. This was the theatrical release, the customary fate of failed TV series pilots though not necessarily indicative of poor quality. Edit the naughty bits and you likely see what was broadcast. For what they could get away with, British quality is evident. Clive Donner directs, and Culp is perfectly cast. I think I glimpse the old woman from the Overlook Hotel Room 237 among the demon worshippers. Had this "sold" as a series the setting would likely have shifted to Stateside, the principal antagonist's return would doubtless have been muted for fear of the network censors, and we'd have seen more of Lilith and less of poor Gig Young. Still, give 'em credit for making do with what today simply can no longer be left (or trusted?) to the imagination.

The show that wound up being made from this "pilot" might be what came to be known as Supernatural.

This film is well researched on the occult. It may seem like fiction but I think they do form into succubus, incubus, and other names mentioned in this film. At the core they are Jinn's made of smokeless fire or plasma. Commonly they shapeshift into werewolves with red eyes. I have seen them. In America they are called skinwalker's or dogman. They especially reside in the native American soil or a place called wadi-e jinn in the middle east and live for thousands of years.

I don't think Gig Young would've lasted if it was made into a series . He seems to be disinterested in the part he's playing . You can see how off the acting between them is .
It's like Robert Culp is trying to pull teeth as far as getting any emotion out of him . It makes Roberts performance look mechanical .

Read up on Gig Young at around this time. He wasn't in good shape, and met a sad end. Talent, though, he certainly had.

Ken opalus Gig Young's drinking was completely out of control. You can see it throughout the film. He was a good professional actor who by now was drunk all the time.

Darn. Eight minutes in and his scar is a what? "Not normal scar tissue" - it was MADE to stop beating. It's in a doll. I know you're a drunk but you've got to come on a trip to hold me down cuz this thing with my heart...and the housekeeper is doing something. And a lady with a fur-coat who ain't all that but apparently stops the show when she enters the room. It's 8 minutes in I don't what the hell is going on and i'm going to another movie! LOL The ONLY thing I found fascinating was the apartment in the first scene is decorated like it's 2020 - which means we need to go back to some traditional, cozy, attractive decor instead of imitating 1977 futuristic visions!

Enjoyable film, although the ending was dragged out a bit--Gig Young and Robert Culp made a godd team--Of course , no more future pairings of these two were possible since alcoholic Gig Young killed his girlfriend and then killed himself
