Why was Deepa Mehta not allowed to shoot her movie
" Water " in North India?
Why the Pandyas and the upper castes opposed the shooting and release of her movie?
      You need to do introspection.

      I humbly disagree.
All the depictions of the sculpture are on hindu temples and not on mosques. There would not a single temple standing let alone Khajuraho sculptures on Indian soil if muslims were extremely puritan and were to blame for anything and everything.
I am not considering today's polarized intolerant people who are fed by WhatsApp university and distorted history.

Thanks to The Wire and Mr Namit Arora for this refreshingly simple, yet well researched look on the sub-continent's history.
Indian history is marred by Brahminical partisanship, colonial prudishness, colonial hangover of even modern historians and the revisionists of the Hinduthva brigade.
Although many notable works by historians like AL Basam , Romila Thapar, Wendy Doniger and others have tried to set Indian history in the right light; they are still less read in today's preference to visual information and digested opinions through the social media.
This web series on RUclips has made Indian history accessible, it is now upto the algorithm to show it on the suggestion lists for the wider public!
Alas! the algorithm is too good to bring this to the suggestion list of say a revisionist! We may be preaching to the choir here :)
But none the less, it is great to be among the ones who liked and commented on this video/series.

However, the 'cultural protectors' of our land are persistent in claiming that their culture is 5000yrs old and it is same as it was in the time immemorial. What can be done to educate these ignoramus people? I hope some of them watch this series and unlearn "their learnings".

Ancient India seems to have been more liberal than any ancient civilization or even any of the modern day cultures. Women and female Goddesses truly had a privileged place in social life. Orthodox Brahminism seems to be the true evil that had befallen India in ancient and medieval times as well as modern day India. I always thought that our country would have been a more developed country if Brahminism and patriarchy never happened to us. But I am wrong, our country was a highly developed society which fell prey to Brahminism and patriarchy and lost its glory many centuries ago. Thank you for this wonderful series, as always a great and enlightening episode.

A very beautifully written narration with delicate intricacies, nuances! By using more simpler words, a reach is made to the general crowd too! The art and craft from the period ranging from 3rd BCE to 1400th century...long journey well handled! Now I could get the clearer picture of how our society moved from a young male sitting on a lakeside tree, playing bansoori and mingling with gopikas to a group of men writing in smritis about how women should be treated! Bad Indian days!!

oh wow ~ another stunning episode! it took me an hour to watch, as I kept pausing to take in and reflect upon so much rich visual, intellectual, and conceptual content! thank you for your incredible work, and for sharing it with us in such an accessible way!
I imagine that the increase in explicit sexual imagery of temple walls was similar to the same progressively bold/ audacious 'boundary pushing' that occurs in Hollywood, with each movie that breaks a new boundary of explicit depiction gaining more attention, and fame.
what strikes me most in the erotic images shown is how consensual they all are. even when the woman's head is (coyly?) turned away, her body is turning toward her partner. there are also SO many beautiful images - both in art and sculpture, where the lovers eyes are locked in a deep and loving gaze. such images convey mutual desire, mutual attraction and mutual enjoyment, which has such a positive impact on viewers, especially as a tool of sexual education!
if the goddesses and gods are making love and experiencing supreme sexual delights, why wouldn't the humans be also, and why wouldn't it be totally okay for them to do so? this body-positive/ sex-positive aspect of 'hinduism' is what has always attracted me the most, as I grew up in the very sexually repressive, patriarchal monotheistic religion.
so thank you so much for all the rigorous intellectual work and inspired creativity that has gone into the making of these episodes, each is a treasure that I get excited to watch! how blessed I feel to be able to learn through this medium, at this time in our history, and to be able to celebrate with others gathered here all that is beautiful, life-affirming, Goddess-loving, and woman-honouring, in our past and collective (her)stories; thank you!
