Matt starting off with "Water." to mirror Brennan's intro on EXU is golden.
And Brennan looked so very proud!
Also the fact that water is fatally dangerous to many beings in Calorum makes it even more perfect.
We only need two more campaings to complete the cicle now!
Next time Aabria DM she gonna go like: "Air".

My absolute favorite thing about D&D is the juxtaposition between such profound and beautiful lines as "There is no light more welcome than that which pierces the darkness" and comedic treasures like "Slam it down big style."
I just read your comment AS Brennan said that line, that was surreal
Poetry 😂❤
i realized mat took the damned food pyramid and made it an illuminati triangle
"Water."
Watching Brennan's joy at seeing his world so beautifully brought to life by another master of their craft is just perfection
The joy of getting to play in one of your favorite settings instead of having to run it for it to happen can not be overstated. I still haven't been able to play in Ravnica.
@@CelticRot I would love for someone to run my setting for me, but it's so hard to have someone that locked into something so tied up into ones own head. It'd take both a really good setting doc, and a skilled DM who really gets it. Brennan (and Matt for that matter!) are some lucky fellas.
"Water"
I love that there's a generation who refers to DMing as a craft lol
@@lowpolyduck how else would you describe what someone like Matt Mercer does?
Mat's "Water" to answer Brennan's "Fire" is so perfect xD
I lost it.
All we need is earth and air from aabria and griffon
Next we need Grass.
I love how this game can be literally anything and still make sense... Veggie Tales meets Game of Thrones? Sure why not.
The first game in this setting was based on Candyland
and this one is a perfect prequel a la House of the Dragon 😍
Apparently it started because Brennan looked at a Candyland box and then his brain went down a path of “if there are kings and princesses here, does that mean there are fiefdoms and serfs too?”
Always thought it was Adventure Time x Game of thrones
@ProducedByMERC It's Candyland inspired. Brennan thought of it after looking at a Candyland box.
This Matt guy is pretty good. He should do this for a living.
Yeah, I think so, too! This kid is going places!
Agreed, and listening to him talk, he should really consider doing some voice acting. I would love to hear him in a video game.
@@nightdragon9375 He'd be great as Ganondorf, I think.
I'm sure he could have a critical role to play somewhere.
My DM got this Taldorei book for our D&D campaign, would love to see what this dude could do with that setting!
I've waited all my life for Ganondorf to say "Slam It Down Big Style" and watching it transpire made me so happy.
Now we just need someone to make a sound bite and alter it so it's deeper sounding.
1:45:32 for anyone looking
Really? You expected that in advance and were waiting for it?
THEYRE THE SAME DUDE???
He just got rizzed up from Matt the Mercer 😄
Love the sour expression on Zac's face when the Bishop was announced. A bit of that old rabbit still lingers.
I mean, given how much trauma the ACOC party were caused by the Bulbian Church, it doesn't surprise me at all. I'm just impressed that we seem to have a second fake clergy (or at least, definitely duplicitous and sneaky) in a row for this setting.

Hats off to Mat for somehow having time to Voice Gannon in tears of the kingdom and DM for Critical role and also Dimension 20. Man is at multiple places at once.
He learned it from Pumat Sol.
@@harpoonlobotomy came here to comment that very same thing.
Uhhh "somehow"? He would've recorded those lines YEARS ago, voice work is typically done super early in production because usually animations are done afterwards.
Also, the lines for Ganon were recorded years ago.
Also from what I remember hearing from interviews the seasons of Dimension 20 are filmed in advance all at once over a shorter period of time. They are not live like critical role so there is much more leeway I'm terms of Scheduling. At most Matt would have needed to take of from his other jobs for about a week.
51:02 I don't think I've made anyone in my life laugh as hard as Zac makes Lou laugh here. It's so genuinely wholesome.

Brennan's long silent stare after Queen Mango clear as day lied AGAIN about not receiving a letter, was PERFECT.
True. Everyone latched onto the bishop for lying about 'I just happened to be in the area' but the queen wasn't much subtler. 'Oh, I was visiting my parents who live nowhere near here'
Zac Oyama is low key one of the funniest people on the planet
I literally had to stand up and walk away for awhile, I was laughing so damn hard at the announcement bit that I had to pause the video because I couldn't pay attention for 10 minutes afterwards. He's undeniably hilarious and easily my favorite of their usual table (I love all of them though).

BIG FACTS
I was so sad A Crown of Candy ended because it was such a great setting. And I loved seeing Brennan on Critical Role. Now this? Perfection!
Crown of candis one of dimension 20's best. Hands down
For those who didn’t watch the adventuring party:
The Fellowship of Destiny’s Architects is a reference to the FDA. (The U.S Food and Drug Administration)
I honestly am kinda glad that Zac didn't go for a traditional Dairy Islanders' accent because I could NOT have handled Zac doing cockney the whole season, he's already too attractive
I think it was originally Scottish, but yes, it would have been lovely.
Brennan came to CR and started with fire, Matt came to D20 and began with water. Now we need Izzy and Marisha to each DM a miniseries so we can get a start with: "Earth..." and "Wind..."
@@johnymey4034 I mean, I wasn't making one. But your pun of blowing a wind joke is pretty solid. Well done!

And the last mini-series should be in September. Why? Oh, I think you should all REMEMBER.
Idk who Anjali is or where she is from, but not only will I be looking up all her stuff I have to say SHE IS FUCKING AMAZING! Her roleplay is unlike anything I've ever seen on this show. Compelling, emotional and she speaks as if she lives in this world. Absolutely an amazing actress and performer, resubbing to Dropout for more of her and her character!
She's been a favorite of mine since I saw her in UnDeadwood.
@@kelticladi yea I need to watch critical role, just never got into it.
@@thewowmister Undeadwood is a 4-episode (I believe) campaign. I think it is a great way to ease into CR.
@@thewowmister Un-Deadwood is an easy watch. It's LITERALLY Deadwood getting invaded by zombies. It's fun, but Matt isn't DM'ing, Brian Foster is and he was great as he's obsessed with Deadwood lol.
Aside from what has been mentioned, she also is an actress and had a smaller part in Miss Marvel, and voices Symmetra in Overwatch
"I do love this city" should not not be that hard of a line but man context is everything.
I know Mr. Mulligan has said it before but there is just something so beautiful about the connections that Lou, Zack, and himself have.
Some people search a lifetime for that player base
I love that you can see the friendship between Matt and Brennan. Two amazing DM's who have played together for a long time, dmed each others worlds, and when they are together it is just amazing and fun.
Funny how the regular dimension 20 crew were holding their dice at the end of episode to roll initiative but Matt went with a super broad time skip to the war :D
Matt tried the old, "If we're speaking to each other in our native tongue then we don't have an accent" thing that Liam did in Critical Role campaign 2 was a fun moment, too bad it was perhaps a bit too niche of a call back.
I think Anjali was doing that too. Her character's native tongue being a more French accent. But I think Matt didn't catch on and switched back. It would have been funny if Matt kept doing that New Yorkery thing for Jacque Tomate, lolz.
That was a wonderful transition of the dome walls at 35:24. Brennan’s childlike wonder and excitement made that everything.
with both aabria and brennan getting to participate as players, this will be insanely entertaining!!
Aabria's reactions are an absolute highlight through the entire episode. Thanks to the editor for showcasing them
I like how instead of playing the authority figure who is against all of the pageantry and stiffness of being a leader, Lou is now playing the person who has to deal with the authority figure who is against all of the pageantry and stiffness of being a leader.
"WATER!"
I literally laughed out loud with Aabria and Brennan.
Bro, I’m so glad I managed to catch the beginning of a series for once. The political intrigue and gut wrenching tension is so juicy to watch
I see what you did there 😂
Can't say I remember Veggie Tales being this lit but I'm all here for it
"The Bulb made you special and he loves you very much."
Holy shit that narrative hook is one of the most awesome ways I've seen to pull in extremely different characters without it seeming too forced or "random". So often I feel like the prison cell or tavern meetup can be a bit narratively weak and make the PCs feel forced to play along, cause we all know they're going to have to stick together whether or not it truly makes sense for the characters. But It's the kind of "railroading" everyone just kinda has to go along with. But the way Matt did it here not only baited the characters in a way that it made complete in game sense for them to get together, but he then gave them something in common and a reason to have stick together in the future! Very very clever, and I'm absolutely stealing it!
Starting in small groups in transit, like in a carriage or a caravan, all converging in the same space, is one of my favourite ways for a narrative to start. It gives such a good excuse for people to kind of sit around and exposit at each other (what else are they gonna do on a long ride to wherever they are going, except ask wtf is going on, and who the heck are they travelling with) and also allows for keeping players still long enough to learn what's going on and feel each other out, but also acts as a plot mover that ensures *something* is going to happen, even if the PC's for some reason stall, or don't know what to do (after all, they're going to arrive wherever they're heading at some point).
I like it a lot more than the static "Meet in the tavern" thing, which can so easily result in Pc's feeling the desire to wander off.
It's impossible not to laugh with Lou when he gets going. I lost it after that Zac introduction. OMG so great.
Thank you Daddy Ganondorf for bringing back Calorum
After Brennans' DM Masterclass in Calamity I've been looking to get into d20 but never quite got the timing right, and then suddenly the stars allign and none other than the OG Legend himself is DMing the first d20 campaign I can actually watch from the start. And what a banger of a first episode. I knew nothing of the world going in and somehow Matt manages to make this completely absurd setting into high fantasy, and ofcourse massive props to Brennan for creating something this insanely original in the first place! All I know is I'm getting Dropout today!
Same 😂
Anjali is the best new player they’ve had on d20 since the very first season, and I say that having only watched an hour of this first episode and fully aware of how high a bar that is to clear. There have been some awesome new faces on this show over the years, but nobody has entered with the same strength and perfect aim as she has right away. To enter so gracefully and just IMMEDIATELY understand the vibe of the show and dive in fully committed like she has is something I’ve seen no other new player do for d20, not even Matt himself, and that’s without mentioning the strength of the rest of the cast. Every other player here has appeared on multiple seasons, are mainstays of the dome - Lou, Zac and Brennan are the probably three of the strongest improvisers in this space in the world, Aabria and Matt command dramatic attention like nobody’s business, but Anjali feels like she belonged the second she opened her mouth. I thought it’d be impossible to cut through such an insane cast, but all my attention is on her in any scene. She’s giving so much to the camera, so much to the other players and so much to the story from the second she’s introduced and that should be applauded. I can’t wait to watch her for the rest of the season.
Anjali has been on a couple shows.
Undeadwood was one I particularly loved that shows off her talent in a cast of players. Highly recommend looking it up.

Matt is a Dnd God. That being said, Brennan doing Calamity was game 6 Michael Jordan...literally art
When a Nat 20 insight meets a Nat 20 deception and both players have silvery barbs
With this, the main three DMs of Critical Role and Dimension 20 have each DMed for each other. Matt DMed for both of them in this. Brennan DMed for Matt in Escape from the Bloodkeep, and Aabria in Exandria Unlimited Calamity. Finally, Aabria DMed for Matt in Exandria Unlimited Prime, and Brennan in Misfits and Magic and A Court of Fey and Flowers.
Aabria also DM’d for Brennan over on Roll20 in the DND chaos series.
Also Pirates of Leviathan
Absolute banger to start off the series. Matt fits into this world like a glove.
The announcing part is my my new favorite moment in all of Dimension 20. Zac is just too damn funny.
Zac really sold it with the window rapping. Using both knuckles, combined with his facial expression, just took me out when I first watched it

Brennan saying "water can be quite corrosive to candy" is such a great call back to the water daggers.
Thanks for being such chill people when it comes to business side. less than ten minutes in and I feel like I'm basically watching TTRPG-style hunger games, in a way, but with actual food-based themes. XD
Yeah, the idea for this universe, started in A Crown of Candy, was "What if Game of Thrones but Candy Land" and it sort of all grew from that. The juxtaposition is wild.

My first thought was Chile con carne because she's a pepper, but I think I prefer your interpretation
Interesting. Maybe she’s in disguise!
The back and forth between Brennan and Matt at 1:26:00 is so impressive. Watching them interact with each other with such fluidity and wit really puts a smile on my face as a fellow DM that appreciates a player who can improv on the fly as quickly as I do

Yup. This is good. This is why I pay for Dropout.
The Bishop giving “how much could a banana cost $10”
I really want to play in Calorum as an assassin from the Pimiento Clan, bred for increasingly spicy excursions over generations by a mad patriarch somewhat like the Old Man of the Mountain from the Middle East of the Crusader era. He would be like a "ghost." A "ghost pepper," if you will, whose burning residue would be found at the site of many a noble's doom.
This is really forming up into an almost-serious idea for my gaming group. Thanks to Brennan and Matt for bringing this wonderfully absurd setting for lethal intrigue to life.
