Would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks for joining me today.
The word you're looking for is eaves. I painted my wood trim white and am so happy I did. Your videos are not dark. Just ignore that person's comment. I painted my basement that "poop" color in 2014. That was an "in" color ten years ago lol. Yes, berber carpet is so 90s. When you say wood floors, do you mean hardwood, engineered wood, or vinyl plank? Give yourself so grace. It will take you time to get done all you want but you'll have the house where you want it someday. It's a beautiful house! As for the dining nook, banquettes are really in these day. I'm excited to follow along with your future renos!
Your videos aren't dark. Your new home is absolutely gorgeous. Embrace all the different seasonal lighting changes. The mature trees are a blessing and keep the home cooler in summer. Remember why you chose this life change and embrace it. 😀 Take your time with renovating your beautiful home, feel the home before quick renos. They always say you should live in a home for a year before making major changes. Loved the tour.
For the porch, if it was me, I think I’d look into flagstone. My thought being that the natural, random stones already in place on the risers need a natural, random stone on the porch and step treads to complement it. Maybe even reuse the stone in your front entry area? Such a charming house! Can’t wait to see what you do!
If you make this home as beautiful as your farmhouse.. it will be amazingly beautiful. It takes time and we will be here to enjoying the journey with you.
I love how cozy your house is. I think it will be welcome in the winter, even if it seems dark and shaded in summer. Embrace the cozy!
I think "red brick pavers" would look beautiful on front porch/steps. Absolutely love your home 💐
in the entry. Lay a runner on your floor and do the wood floor like rest of the house. You’ve got this.
When I moved into my house, I was very unsure of the direction I wanted to go, but I did know I didnot like what the previous owners had, so I painted the entire inside the same color, tore up the slate floor in the entry and carpet. I put in wood floors. It stayed this way for years, and it worked fine. Now ofcourse my style has evolved and I have made slight changes here and there. Your house has good bones, have fun with it. For the porch, I'd go with the wood look, it's timeless and won't clash with the stone, just my opinion. I do know whatever you choose will be lovely!! By the way, I love a galley kitchen and truly wish I had one. The brick archway above the stove is gorgeous. Truly the kitchen really only needs paint, maybe a different counter will brighten it.
We moved into my in-laws 1970s home last year. It too had the deep roof overhangs and dark everything inside. Painted the walls all a warm white in a satin finish and the trim the same color in a gloss finish. The gloss helps bounce the light and it really brightens things up. In our kitchen removed upper cabinets in the sink area and put in bank of windows. Best thing ever!
OK, lots to unpack in this video. As someone who has renovated and flipped many houses over a long lifetime, here are my suggestions. 1. Front porch and entry: keep it consistent in look and color all the way into the house hallway. I like the grey tile you laid out. Use it on the porch and get rid of that stone edging for a more upscale look. Tile the edging instead. Then for your front hallway, use a similar tile in a similar pattern and color (choose something smoother and "indoor" that matches the porch) to give a seamless transition as you come into the house. That alone is going to increase the value of your house substantially and it looks very cottagy. It will evoke classic "French cottage style" which is timeless. Best not to mix materials (wood/stone) for the outside and inside entries; that would look choppy and amateur. 2. Roof: consider solar shingles. Just take a look and do some research. There are some great choices out there that could make your home more energy efficient. If you don't like that, consider metal to shed snow and be fireproof. If you REALLY do not like or cannot afford either of those practical and good looking choices, there are thicker, fireproof shingles or shingle panels that have the look of what you already have. A roof is a lifetime investment, so worth more time and research. 3. Interior colors: White is boring. If you must choose it, there is Home Depot paint color called "New House White" in a high-quality paint that has subtle warm tones and goes with everything. I have a lot of tan/brown/grey in my current home (even in the tiles) and the wall color keeps things from looking too cold. Avoid the blue-whites: they actually look more shadowy and dark in a room that gets less light. In the schoolroom, I suggest a long "refectory" (British term) type table. Consider building your own, even if you do not have woodworking skills, that way you can make it fit the space -- not too wide, but long and lower for the kids. Consider using reclaimed wood planks with some character, joined together underneath with simple cross pieces. You can purchase turned legs online or at the local lumberyard, or get some old carved legs from a salvage yard. Brush on a coat of stain in a color you like. You will save tons of money and have an "antique" table that will wear well and last forever. Let the kids beat it up. The more patina/scars the better. 4. The word you were looking for is "overhang" or "eaves": you are extremely fortunate to have them (and the shade trees) as they will save you a ton of money on AC in summer. You and the kids will be in the schoolroom during the day, which has good lighting now, and mostly in the living room in the evening, so I would stick with cozy cottage style in the LR and not worry too much about the light -- it will be brighter in winter. Keep the natural woodwork and beams. Paint walls New House White; it will make a huge difference and go WELL with the brick. That and new lighter flooring will lighten the room sufficiently. Keep the area rug in lighter tones of tan/brown/blue (or green)/brick. Add light bulbs in lamps and fixtures that provide the color spectrum you want -- daylight, if that's what you like. Change out the ceiling fixture with inexpensive lights that allow you to choose the light color spectrum you prefer (Home Depot, Lowes). Keep furnishings in lighter tans and creams (slip covers!) and let your rug add the colors. I would use a lighter "wood" flooring throughout the house -- keep it the same throughout, that way you can do one room at a time as you can afford it and have the time. If you use tile for the kitchen floor, consider the same tile you used in the front entry. Tile in the kitchen will look old world and lighten everything up. 5. Master bath: YES, redo and enlarge. Strongly advise you to make it ADA accessible. You will be truly grateful for that as you age. You could even do a walk-in shower with no curb if you tile the whole bathroom floor. 5. convert the upper kitchen cabinet door to frames with glass and paint the insides of the cupboards a light color to match your walls. Your kitchen will look more open, less dark, and have cottage interest. You can probably just cut out the middle panels of the cabinet doors, run a thin piece of molding stained to match around the edge of the opening and add the glass. Love the brick alcove. Paint the lower cabinet doors to match the brick and they will "disappear." You can easily replace the stove top. 6. Love the blue cupboard in the "butler's pantry"; suggest building a couple more of those between windows for storage (or if you're not into building, get stock cabinets, change out the doors using plywood beadboard from Lowes, and paint, then make your curtained tables BELOW the windows. Looking forward to watching as you go forward!
I like that you are so patient and being thoughtful about your decisions. That's not easy. Good on you! It has great bones and will look lovely throughout the years.
I live in a woods. You will get use to the lack of sunshine inside. Changes with the seasons. Go outside and get all the sunshine you want. Seems very cozy😊
My notes as I followed you through your home. :) I LOVE your choice of the herringbone stone to match the stone face on the steps, and it would be a gorgeous blend with your white columns and trim. Looks timeless, rich and elegant! Like an English country cottage and garden. And yes to to the garden paver path. I also agree with your thought on the shingles. Depending on your paint color decision, the seamless look of wood in the entryway, with good mats outside to wipe feet before entry and/or non-slip rugs on top of the wood floor would be nice. But when seeing your gorgeous white entry door, I thought of the gray tile that looks like wood that my "Builder" son and his wife picked out for there home! Yes to bead-board. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the brick arch over the stove and have wanted a double wall oven for many years...would be great especially for busy holidays, entertaining, and baking days - breads, granola, crackers, pizzas, etc... I kind of like the idea of taking down the portion of counter that juts out so that it looks less crowded. I love that the pantry will be reborn. I hope your beautiful antique European style artwork goes back on your walls. Also love the wood trim, beams, and brick fireplace. Basically, I loved your vision in your previous home and know whatever you decide will be perfect!
I think hardwoods throughout the main floor would be great, then you can define the areas, such as the entryway, with rugs. Excited to see how it all turns out! 🙂
Cami, you are such a precious lady. I love your attitude and godly perspective. You have an amazing home with so much potential and I'm so excited for you all 💗
What a beautiful home! Here in the Pacific Northwest, white paint is your best friend! Our dark 50s ranch was TRANSFORMED, even though it had a lot of windows. Also mirrors opposite windows bounce the light around. It will be fun to come along for the ride. 🤍🤍🤍
Family room has SO much potential!! I would paint the trim a creamy white and do a German Schmear on all the brick. I did this to a fireplace in a dark room that we had and it turned out absolutely beautiful and brightened up the whole space! Creamy colored drapes from the ceiling to the floor on a gold rod would look beautiful with it. I think there’s so much potential there! Don’t get discouraged and just take it one little step at a time. It’ll all come together! ❤
PS: my favorite creamy white is called Cotton Knit by Behr Paint. Keep the beams in there as they are, but just by painting, the trim will make such a huge difference.!
The overhang of the roof is called the eave.
Love the wood...don't paint! The whole fireplace room gives such an English Cottage cozy vibe!
Lovely details in your cottage. I have a home that had wood trim, we tried to leave it but it was too dark and dated the house. If I were you I would paint all trim and leave the floors, beams, and brick as focal points. The wood trim takes away from the other details. Definitely go lighter on the upper kitchen cabinets with paint, it will make the Walnut stand out in the bottom cabinets and make the brick a focal point. Copen Blue SW is a fantastic color for old brick and wood beams. It is a historical color. You can make your house brighter with paint and it will make all of those gorgeous details stand out. To make more light you could take down a few trees around your house to let light in if the shade is too heavy, especially if they are trees that are not your favorite.
Everything will be beautiful once you remodel and decorate- you are gifted!!!
You asked for feedback so here's my 2 cents worth:
-Brick or slate on your front porch or a stone like look
- Entryway- a vinyl plank throughout is a thought- you know the product. Wears well, waterproof, cost effective.
Or wood throughout- with runners and rugs
-The chair rail seems to be too low. On camera at least it seems to shrink the wall. I
recommend either raising the chair rail a couple feet , or take it down and add vertical or wainscoting
-you say you love the brick on the fireplace in the family room- where I live that brick shouts 70's/80's. I would definitely reconsider either 1) painting it or 2) recovering it.
The mantle is GORGEOUS.
-The door to the basement- we had a similar one. I switched it out for a frosted glass door. A glass door of sort- would match your design idea. It made a HUGE difference in our older home. Really helps open up a hall, the stairwell light also casts light in the hall, the stairwell is identified indirectly.
-I agree taking the closet in the living room down (?) out and putting the piano in there is a GREAT Idea. Otherwise paint the closet doors like your bedroom closet doors.
-the kitchen brick arch and surround seems to overpower the small kitchen. Again that brick (in our area at least) screams 70's/80's not in a cottage cozy way- sorry.
Your former mudroom rock wall somewhat similar to what Mr. Tidbit did in your butler pantry would be nice.
Or a white wash or mud texter over the arch and around would give a cottage/old world look.
- different cabinet up/down is a nice idea.
Have you considered glass cupboard doors (beveled glass maybe) . Light in the cupboard with the glass doors would brighten things up very nicely- (light under cabinets too).
- A laundry room in the mudroom is a thought.
-butler pantry in the former laundry room??
- I would keep colours very neutral throughout.
-your wood pantry shelves are Beautiful.
-you have amazing ideas. I can't wait to see it all transform.
-the most important thing is your well being!!!
What's the task you can do that will bring you joy and satisfaction?
-I recommend taking a pry bar to the slate flooring (repurpose it in the yard as you mentioned). Paint the plywood floor (or take up that too and lay new plywood underlayment in prep for stage 2)
paint using a miss-tint or left over paint initially, lay a jute runner or ruggable runner on it until time and money allows for your wood floor installation.
You got this
👩🔧👷♀🦸♀Cami
I hope my suggestions were welcomed. I only offered suggestions because you asked. I trust you'll make a beautiful home.
PS. the black leather sofa was a lovely gift to get but it doesn't really match anything does it. How about a cushion and sofa blanket on it? These items would help soften the harshness of black leather.
PPS. you offer your viewers soooo much insight, inspiration, ideas, and you are interesting. I will keep watching and share :)
Warm regards, Leanne
So many great ideas you have and lots of suggestions in the comments. My only two cents is 1) maybe go through and paint all the walls white and live it with it like that for a while. See how it feels and where you want to take it from there. 2) I love the idea of the butlers pantry/prep area. I think it would be so lovely. BUT one thing to consider, are you going to be storing any long term produce in there?? If you think you would, then you will want to consider all the light from the windows and the effect they will have on that kind of thing.
3) What if you could move the cabinets in the laundry room to the pantry room? That might make it open up enough to have your washing machine and dryer in there again.
You have such wonderful ideas for your new home! I love how cozy it is and it will be fun to see the progression as you add your ideas to it. We live in an A frame home and I have embraced the cozy but add lighter tones where possible.
Living room needs larger scale couch, like 2 couches or a large sectional-pulled away from the wall. Built-ins across from fireplace-along the entire wall. Coffee station/beverage station in coat closet. Indian block print curtains. Stacked artwork. Multiple areas in living room, like a table for playing board games, etc… Add plants. Remove upper cabinets in kitchen and get open shelves that have a cottage look. Or…Make a row of windows above kitchen sink. Or just a larger window. Nature views will open the space, make you feel calmer, fresh air, etc…. Focus your time on where you spend the most time, first. Love your style!!!
A paint job will do wonders for the whole house. You'll be amazed what difference in brightness a white wall vs. A brown wall can make.
Something to keep in mind with the front porch is if the material is going to get slippery when wet. I feel like tile would get slippery. The stone is beautiful!!!
I would also do seamless wood through the entry!
I’m excited to see your cottage looks come together, cottage style is my favourite!
We had orange wood trim & it really dated the house and we were recommended to paint our trim white. I like it very much. If the wood trim and been nice quality wood, I probably would have left it untouched. Our rooms now appear lighter & brighter. Mirrors also help bounce the light around too. A fresh coat of ceiling paint can also make a difference.
We have wood floors right to the front door with a mat for visitor’s boots as we mostly use our back door entry.
I’m personally not a huge fan of chair rails as they seem to visually cut a space in half, but maybe a pretty wallpaper would work nicely with it.
I would go with brick in the porch, unless it’s rough on bare feet in the summer.
Take your time and trust your instincts you have always done a great job decorating. I like the idea of light and bright. Paint is always a good choice.
Definitely the stone look for the porch .Entry...keep the wood flooring through out like the church history homes your toured. School room...hardwood flooring for sure.maybe put some beams in there? Master...nice crown molding... maybe add some barn door for the closets if it works. Beautiful beams in the family room and yes to the tongue and groove in between. Not one for painting brick either. Also, paint the door going out and I think when you paint the room adjacent to it it will help to brighten up that room as well. Piano in the closet is a great idea! Kitchen..maybe add some beams in there as well. I think I would take down the short little wall. It will bring in more light into that family room. Love you kitchen ideas the love the butler pantry concept. Love your fridge in kitchen and the idea of taking out the ovens for a pantry. Your on the right track girl. It will be beautiful when you are all done. Just my 2 cents worth......
love your ideas for the kitchen, I think that will turn out so good. You always do a great job with design I know this place will be charming!
What a project you have on your hands. I admire your courage as you take your time making this house you. It is so overwhelming at times, but it looks great so far. I love that this video was about your sharing your vision. When my husband and I bought our first home, I would always have my sister's and mom over to just walkthrough as we discussed the possibilities. Such a fun time to be a part of. Thank you always for sharing!
Oh my goodness the Corinthian columns on your house are stunning…
you just panned to show us the shake roof, and I got a peak. WOW!
So glad you are working to make your new home a cozy cottage! I would paint the brown in the den a pale greige or warm white before deciding on painting the wood trim. It could be enough to brighten the space without touching the pretty wood. I would probably tile where the slate floor is now. If you are in a snowy area, I think it would be more practical and do the rest of the floors the lighter wood. The house has so much potential and I can't wait to see the changes as you progress!
Paint is going to make a huge difference! It will lighten everything up! You have already made it look so much better! I can’t wait to see what you do! I think stone on the front stoop. Love the idea of an on suite bathroom! Love your new refrigerator! 😍 Can’t wait to see your butlers pantry! Wood floors throughout will be great! -Joanna
It’s a beautiful house with such potential and lots of space, just gorgeous and you will make it your own and it will be lovely ❤️❤️❤️
Can’t you make the ex laundry room the pantry/butlers and where you want to put the butler pantry put the laundry since is bigger?
LOVE YOUR HOME and all the possibilities! Just writing my thoughts as I watch…. Porch - I would do the smaller tile, brick, or small flagstone so that you have lots of grout lines to keep it from getting slick when it's wet. The larger tiles or wood plank tiles would get slippery in rain & snow.
Entry - I would stick to one floor and reduce the transitions. Opportunity for a cute washable entry rug! For the entry walls - I love your idea of bead board or vertical lap treatments that go 3/4 up the wall and end with pegs. Then paint white on the top quarter.
Yellow toilet - "I have a different vision" - you made me laugh out loud :D
Bedroom lighting - absolutely agree about the cozy vibe. You definitely don't need to invest in overheard lighting in a bedroom. It is never flattering! Your primary has beautiful bones!
Living room - I think you can paint the trim, especially since you’re leaving those gorgeous beams natural, they will provide more of a statement if not competing with the wood trim.
Dining nook - I’d leave the partition wall. It does help define the space and allows you to change paint colors from the living room to the kitchen if you want.
Kitchen - agree with you on keeping the walnut and getting a really light, bright countertop! With an equally light and bright backsplash and painting the walls up to the ceiling white, I think it would be worth trying to keep the walnut uppers at first. For the cabinet in the brick where the double-ovens usually are, could you hide another fridge or freezer in there to increase your fridge space?
Thoughts on not a lot of natural light - just think of all the energy cost savings in the summer! We have a lot of natural light in our house, but in the summer, it gets hot! I love how you said it just invites you to spend more time outside. Once you've lived a full winter in this home, you will probably have a lot more of an idea how big of a problem the light is, since that is when you won't be able to be outside as much. So excited for you!
Your home is lovely! Don't feel like you have to apologize. You loved this home for so long. I know it can seem so overwhelming when you move from a perfect new home to an older home. Just continue to pin on Pinterest and get your vision. Take one room at a time. A few suggestions: I would do brick on your front porch. Less slippery and has more of a cottage feel. Definitely do wood floor throughout. Will make rooms flow better and appear larger. White walls would make everything brighter. It would open it up and change it completely. Keep wood doors and beams. Chair rail can sometimes make a house dated and make a room look smaller. In the kitchen take the upper cabinets to the ceiling. Take out the header above them. You could put your refrigerator that's in the garage into what was the laundry room and have your small appliances in there. You could take out those closet doors and do open shelves there. Lighter countertops would be great! I know whatever you decide it will look amazing! I can't wait to watch it become the home you love! 😊
Here’s what I know…moving to a new place is hard! But I also know you have e beautiful taste and a creative eye so what you come up with will be awesome!! I can’t wait to see it!!
Hi Cam! Your new home is absolutely beautiful. In my humble opinion, you absolutely made the right decision. As for the "dark" living room, I h ad the same problem and found that a large mirror facing the windows really helped. You could even use a few of them, but I love the idea of a large one. And yes! Piano in the closet space, right there where the family can enjoy it. Thanks for your thoughtful, lovely content.
The cottage is going to be beautiful - you have the touch! I'll be looking forward to seeing your updates. Our house faces north so the north facing rooms are definitely don't have as much light, plus we have a covered front porch.
Cami, this was so fun! I love seeing how you visualize and work through the process. I'm excited to see the loving touch you put into your new home. I've always LOVED everything you do!
What if you turned your kitchen, into the butler’s pantry and the other space into your kitchen? Just thinking the windows in there are amazing. It could look similar to your last kitchen, which I Adored!
Thats a brilliant idea! 👍
Great idea!! 💡
I j ust enjoyed your video. Like others said , your videos are not looking dark. However I understand you wanting to make changes to make this home your home. I personally like wood floors because I really like wood or wood looking tile. When I moved in a home with carpet and changed it to wood it made me so happy and still does. Choose what is right for you. I agree about repainting the walls & taking down the wallpaper stripe up at the ceiling as it does look outdated. I think the room with the fireplace will look nice with white wood ceiling between the beautiful wood beams after you do that, then decide what you want to do about the look of the wood around the windows. You have great instincts in design so go with your gut feeling after you’re finished with the rest of the room as you will know what goes or not. The piano move to replace the door cabinet you don’t like sounds like a good place try it there if you don’t like it you can move it and do something else with that area. Your kitchen cabinets are gorgeous ! Too many people paint over the rich colors and warmth of wood especially those in such good condition, but again do what feels right for you and your family. The stone area on the floor is a trip hazard so yes again you are right ; remove it and let your wood flooring flow through your home. If you feel a room is too dark a possible way to get more daylight might be a skylight, not sure how costly that is or if you like them just a suggestion. I have a bathroom I’d like to do that in but it’s not in our budget. Always feel free to change the things you want as you can fit them in your budget. You have great ideas! Trust yourself❣️ Thank you for making these You Tube videos they are informative and well done 😊👏👏
I wonder if you'd have room in the Pantry for a spare refrigerator or freezer? Just a thought.
Hi, for the room where the light from outside doesn't penetrate, today as a matter of fact, I saw a huge light wood tone cabin with huge wall windows, stunning. I believe it would look beautiful since you like wood. It's a very light color more like Scandinavian tone they use in Scandinavia where the wood is very light. Also, you can build out like a glass porch to bring in the light and knock down the window wall.
Keep the wall!! Love the little cottage kitchen nook!❤
Thanks for your thoughts!! I am leaning more towards that as well.
Love your cottage! We renovated my husbands grandparents house 4 years ago, it was fun but thankful we didn’t live there while doing it with 4 kids! Your doing great taking your time and working on it while living in the space. Keep up the good work!
Just a thought on the front porch you may want to think about if you haven’t yet.
Tile is really slippery outside when wet!
So sad someone said that about the dark house!
We lived in an in either home where only one side had windows, larger mirrors worked great for reflecting light and brightening it up.
Cute house and love the beams. Love the idea of white tongue and groove on the ceiling. So cute!
When we replaced out shake roof we went with a lightweight concrete that looked like cedar shake. Lifetime warranty!!
I think just painting the walls with a white paint would make a big difference and help you get a better vision for what you could do.
I love the idea of the stone herring bone look for the porch 🤗
Your ideas sound very reasonable and ideas worth the effort. As you said a house you love and intend on staying in long term so I am interested in your immediate changes and long term projects.
For family room that’s dark. Go in stages. Brighten walls with paint first. Then decide on doors and trim. You’ll know after living with it. Don’t think you need to decide all at once. Eaves is the word you’re looking for
Porch: wood look for sure as tile can look cold/modern feel
Roof: Metal... would it be noisy when it hails and rains? Could you ask neighbors or friends who have a metal roof how they like it?
Also, what product would reflect the heat more in summer, and Snow Load in winter is important, depending on how much snow you get...and of course, budget comes into play!
Interior Flooring/Main: I would do a LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) in a wood look...and continue it in main areas like foyer, living room, kitchen, bath... in the bedrooms, one can do carpet...and up the stairs/2nd floor...but in those public main areas, keeping it all the same prevents the rooms from looking Choppy!
I like the wood cabinets and the brick in the kitchen. I don’t think your videos are dark. I like that your house is different and has character. Just painting and updating the walls a little will make a difference. I love wood trim ,I am tired of seeing all white everything. You house is so cute and I am sure you will make it even better.
Love the home! My mind goes to colonel paint colors & trim with light pine floors thru out, Williamsburg VA, is what I envision. The pantry I see open shelves between the windows & upper walls then closed cabinets under windows or window seats with storage & lower cabinets along the solid walls with open shelves on top. Then use your drop table or an island in the middle. The laundry room I would do a stackable washer/dryer combo for master bedroom & kitchen laundry & yalls clothing. Work other w/d into upstairs for that laundry...no carrying laundry up & down. Just my thoughts, thank you for sharing.
If you get a lot of snow what would be most practical for not slipping and falling in the winter? Ripping the stairs out and adding brick would be nice and use the stones somewhere else if you couldn’t part with them.
I’m anxious to see your visions come to reality. So much work ahead of you, but you’ve got what it takes to make it happen. Best of luck on your journey to make this house a home your family can enjoy for years to come!
I suggest leaving the beams and the mantle natural wood, I love the brick but if you wanted to paint it a lighter color that would freshen it up. Definately stone on porch, wood floor throughout the house.LVP is easy to keep clean, just a mop once a week. It would be great in the classroom. I have wood-look tile in one room and I wouldn't recommend it. It's cold in the winter and the grout has to be kept clean.
Whatever you decide will be lovely and homey and cozy. Enjoy the process. ❤ Sandy
Oh my, what a beautiful gem you have for a home! It, for sure, its't the "cookie cutter" they are building today. I would not paint the dark trim nor wouid I change the fireplace....and the arch in the kitchen, well, is to die for! Your home has character that would you don't see today. It is going to be beautiful!!!
Maybe skylights when you do the roof. Definitely brick look on the porch. Wood floor, yes. I love the wood don't paint it! But hey, it's your house and I can't wait to see what you do with it. Lol
What a charming home full of character! I live in Utah, too, and just discovered your channel, so I’m excited to watch your journey! My two cents’ worth on the upstairs laundry room and sunroom would be to turn the laundry room into a walk-in pantry and use the beautiful sunroom for a large laundry/sewing/craft room. My grandma had a large laundry room off of her kitchen and it was such an inviting space! Just trying to think outside the box and consider what I would do if that were my house. Enjoy!
I love the herringbone stone or tile on the porch. Entry: either do the same herringbone stone from the porch or do the wood tile as close in grain and plank size to your new wood floors but also in herringbone and if your able, put electric radiant floor heating just at your entry. I like the idea of trimming out the bookshelves in the school room to make them look built in- which would have happened when the house was originally built and long library table is an amazing idea as is the wood floors and big rugs, a large world map and USA map and/or world clocks in the back wall would really kick up the library look. Your primary bath definitely needs a rework- if you can give up even a foot into the bedroom and add a pocket door, your bath could get what you need and good closet systems would help with your everyday flow. For your family room lighter walls and paint trim a white will definitely brighten the room and I would say skylights when you redo the roof but unless that is a single story addition, it’s not feasible; recessed lighting with dimmers that could go from daylight lighting during the day to darker in the evening; you either need to sand down the wood and try to keep it a raw look to brighten it up or paint the majority of it, leaving the surround of the fireplace and leave the beams the way they are; two sofas on either side of the fireplace and the chairs facing the fireplace would be nice. Kitchen: lighter paint like a pale French blue to compliment the walnut cabinets, brushed brass hardware, more lighting and under-cabinet lighting, not a fan or two-tone cabinets but do love the idea of putting those walnut (stack the uppers on the lowers with counter or butcher block between the windows and keep the tops of the uppers open for baskets) cabinets in your new butlers pantry and putting new ones in the kitchen configured your way and I love the idea of removing the double ovens and make a storage cabinet and putting in a gorgeous gas range. Bathroom- get rid of the tile everywhere! Garage ideas are perfect.
I love the flooring in the will be pantry! It reminds me of Union Station flooring at Washington DC. I would just move that blue cabinet and place it in front of the window on the right.
I love your ideas for changing some of the spaces in your home. Outside I love the wood look but maybe the stone would hold up better. We have done something similar in our home where we took out all the carpet except we left carpet in the bedrooms and put LVP throughout the half. I love the seamless look of having it all the same. I think in your family room if you redid the carpet paint and put can lights it would make such a big difference I love the wood fireplace and the wood tone of your cabinets and would not paint them. There are always tablet options on Facebook to put in your butler's pantry or for different uppers in your kitchen. You are so good with the fabrics and linens and making it feel cozy. I can't wait to see what you do with this space.
*cabinet options not tablet ha ha.
I would do wood flooring inside your home in the entry way. Then lay a runner to catch any wetness from shoes. I loved hearing all of your plans.
I would suggest gray slate for the walkway continuing up to the steps and front porch. Also gray for the roofing color as well. I get more of a cottage style rather than a farmhouse style for this house.
Your home is beautiful, your yard and trees are beautiful. Trees were a requirement when I bought my house. As for your dark rooms, a little lite colored paint goes a long way. Take your time and enjoy the process.
They have shingles that look like rhe real wood shingles
I like the look of wood on the porch. All is beautiful.
Porch....the pavers are beautiful & more cottage feel. Have you considered a metal roof? I was shocked that it wasn't but a few hundred $ more than shingles & looks great & the snow slides right off (we are in N.central Ohio).
I'm glad you like the pavers I picked out! I'm leaning more towards those. We did have a metal roof on our last house and sometimes the snow fall was quite dangerous and made huge piles in front of the house. One year the snow fall was so bad it ripped off every snow dam we put up there. Because this home has an even steeper pitch, I just don't think it will work great. But I do love the look of them!
I’m excited to see how your beautiful and sweet home changes as you are able to bring these ideas to life! Your channel, and Andrea of Pine and Prospect Home, are two of my favorites as your cottage homes are so endearing and cozy! Stay encouraged as you work through these projects, it’s going to be worth it and us viewers are here for YOU and your design creativity, not the lighting of your videos. That made me laugh and shake my head when you shared what one commenter said….if she’s seeking light, she needs to be finding that in Jesus and NOT RUclips videos.
Hi Cammie, I would love to see your front porch in red brick pavers or the stone you showed, only in a much larger scale. Your family room is lovely and cozy. I wouldn't change much except for the wall colours and the built in robes. I love all your ideas. I think you really do know what you want but maybe are just questioning your choices. Go with your gut, you're right on!! All your kitchen ideas were exactly right, in my opinion. You go girl, you've got this.
I would paint the kitchen cabinets, change the benchtops to stone and move the big fridge into the butlers pantry
You have overhangs ;) that’s the word you were looking for. I love your channel so much 💞
Thanks for the tour. The outside of the roof area is called a soffit. You have so many ideas swirling in your mind,it must feel overwhelming. I would take some time and save money.Think about what would help the most to remodel. In the immediate time, paint for family room, take out the closet and move your piano there. Those thoughts seem pretty firm. Would take time and brainstorm more. Then move forward. I’ll pray for you to have some peace of mind. It’s not easy to live with all you have going on.
Take care as you and Mr. Tidbits move forward to making this home ors.😘
A couple opinions:
Outside - I prefer the stone tile
Slate area - I lean more toward all wood.
RUclips comment - some people are just tacky!
Other than that, I love all your ideas! I'm very much looking forward to seeing you transform the home to be more you. I love the Tidbits style! ❤
In place of washer and dryer may be you could use some counter space, especially when you take things out of those food storage pull-outs. May be shelves with butcher block countertop and curtains (similar to what you had in your previous pantry).
Make sure the top rail or board over your headboard is deep enough from the front edge of the board to the back where it meets the wall so you can run a groove lengthwise so you can stand up framed pictures so they can s"set in " the groove and not slip off....and you can also put other things on them other than picture frames....ALSO in all of this, Cami.... remember to "keep looking up".........soon and very soon........❤
NOT HEADBOARD...BUT BEADBOARD ❤
I love my kitchen like yours. They are also called a"Pullman" kitchen after the Pullman trains ....they are also a lot of fun for you and your husband, if you get my drift.....I don't have an angled counter at the end and would make it straight also ....really love the intimate breakfast eating area.....do think the little side room where the washer /dryer area needs those cupboards put into the other room for your kitchen prep area/ storage/ etc area....then you could still have the washer dryer upstairs, maybe with a narrow counter all across that wall for folding clothes with maybe a couple cute shelves for pretty containers for soaps/ clothes pins, etc. You get the idea. Love, just love your Pinterest board and the colors and the cottage/ country vibe you are going for. Love your yard, so I can see why you bought the house even though it's good you are young. It's a lot of work. I think the word you were looking for was "overhang". Just keep looking up, Cami......much love from this 81 year old great grandmother who was always a " keeper of the home"......smile, smile ...and who doesn't regret a moment of it😊
Overhang on the roof is the eaves. 😊
Thank you for allowing us to walk through your home. I am dealing with the same problem with my Eaves. They make my house dim. So we are remodeling a farmhouse right now and we have decided to keep the wood. My husband is very much into the Scandinavian look and he wants the walls to be a creamy white and some natural wood trim and floors. I think maybe that would look good in your family room or living room area as well. What concerns me about putting wood tiles outside of your door, is when it is damp outside those are really slick! I'm concerned for your mom. And I would use the tile that you showed at the beginning because it has some texture to it and I think that her shoes will grip those better than they would the wood tiles and I agree the front entry should be wood flooring throughout the inside of your house and add a rug to the entry. This will help.
I like the stone, much more cottage look. 😊
Hi! First time checking out your channel… The house you purchased is incredibly charming… As an interior designer, one word of advice would be don’t use the overhead lights… If you use them at all, get recessed lighting and then use a lot of lamps. It’s the way to go, trust me!and I think in time you will learn to live with the coziness that the house is a little bit darker… Which direction does it face?❤
I like the same kitchen cabinets. Don’t change for different for the hanging. It’s great cottage look.
If you put lighter paint on the walls it will change the look.
I had what was called interlock for my farmhouse, I got it in copper it was amazing! It came with a 100 year warranty that was transferable (you can only imagine when I sold the house with 75 more years on the roof)but I was the envy of the neighborhood when everyone had to be removing snow from their roofs and mine just slid right off!! That was worth the cost in itself! I don’t know if the herringbone pattern will clash with the rock facing?
Tile would be easier to clean especially in winter or mud season🤦🏻♀️ but I do love wood floors😂
I don’t think your house is too dark, ppl are use to the brightness of your previous home.
The wood trim is very nice. I think you can work with it!
Well if you make the room off the kitchen a butlers pantry you could always put the fridge built in there. I agree the butlers pantry would be awesome!
I’m not a fan of the color of the cabinets. Maybe a white to lighten things up? I agree the brick of gorgeous and also the angle of the counter is kind of dated.
When you do use the laundry room maybe take those closets out and then there will be room for your washer/dryer? Can’t wait to see what you do with everything, I have total faith you will make it look even more awesome than it already is!!❤
Paint changes everything
I would definitely lighten up the interiors walls and floors and especially change all the ceilings to white
For the family room. Strip and light wash the wood, light white wash the brick! And finally a big mirror facing the windows instant brightness
Sorry just got to the point where you love the brick, still lighter wood staying and a mirror would help! Oh and the area from the roof to the windows is a soffit!
Can't wait to see what you do, you have beautiful style.
Your home has such character.......whatever you do stay true to the cottage vibe the home already has.....don't do any trends ( no green. barn doors or wall paper all over!) !!!! Do what YOU love!! The herringbone tile for the front steps is way too formal.....do something more cottagey and informal with slate or brick. Your kitchen is the coolest ...keep the brick but I would paint the cabinets white..so classic and light and bright. Wood throughout is great except the foyer I would do a stone or keep the stone thats there as your winters are harsh....wood and water do not mix! Oh and your videos are not dark....love the light tone in this home in the videos !!

Your front steps , just clean them . Stay with shaker roof to keep the character. Love the entry slate . Just add a runner .Gut Bathroom take out tub add standing glass shower .living room take out carpet and off white walls , paint ceiling white . No curtains . Paint wood .Change light fixture. Put a farm sink . School house fixtures . Take out a cabinet open shelf’s . If you paint upper cabinets do the color that you adding to living room . Put a crystal chandelier in pantry . Good luck 🍀
Love the brick around the mantel😊
Definitely agree on open upper shelving in your kitchen! Very cottage feeling 😊
Wellll, I’m about to totally throw you for a loop! And I can’t believe I’m leaving this long a comment lol. Hear me out- I’m a long time follower and feel like I “know” your vibe and homemaking personality. Thinking outside the box, while still using all your existing cabinets and minimizing expensive change.
1st- taking down all the uppers above your sink on the exterior wall would make your galley space feel much wider visually. If money permits, add more window width so much more light spills across to the darker brick nook. Then use those uppers (plus some trim to get them to right height) underneath the windows in the current kitchen nook to create a buffet style storage space. (There might even be space for a tiny antique bistro table and two chairs still in front of it. Hard to tell from pictures) Or use the doors from original cabinets and deepen the cabinet boxes and extend the run of lowers where the fridge used to sit. Or use them in what I’m proposing you use as pantry. Then you can add in place of original upoers some cute minimal depth open shelves or plate racks so you have something to style for seasons, etc!
2nd- take the wall on the left of the current entrance into the original dining room completely down. If no uppers are there, you spill light from that direction back toward the kitchen as well, and again it will give the illusion of wider space.
3rd- use that big original dining space as your dining space! It’s so much bigger; think once you have grown children and their families coming home, you can have a loooooooong harvest type table in there for tons of seating and still have room for a hutch or your blue cabinet at one end of the space.
4th- before you redo flooring, lose the odd angled counter where the stools set. Just square it off with living area. It will make it feel more open and cottage style rather than 70s.
5th- in original laundry area, pull out those deep closets with the pullouts, use that space to do your beautiful stone walls like in your old house, and do the counter with the curtain underneath and repurpose the deep pullouts in curtained area to access. Then recreate your open pantry shelves again as well. That space will feel tons bigger and I don’t think you would lose as much storage as you think. On the opposite wall use that current plumbing to put in a prep sink with a run of counter for prep space, curtain underneath and more open shelving above. All that in washer and dryer wall could be undone if you ever moved laundry back in.
Hopefully even some of this makes sense! I can see it in my minds eye!!
Whatever you decide to do, you got this❤️
I personally like the bathroom just the way it is. With the exception of updating the shower, and floor, vanity. It seems to me if you change all of these vintage design elements of your home, it will start to diminish that unique feeling you get when you come into your spaces. Adjusting to the original spaces, will keep it more minimal, less cleaning, and save you huge amounts of money! Focusing more on paint, vintage molding.thrifted cottage decor items. Love all wood flooring, and rugs to accent each room is awesome! Any original stone work, I would keep! Character is key!❤❤
Why not add can lights through out....alabaster color paint from Sherwin Williams....love the stone on the porch. .... wood floors through out. 😅
Why not put a second fridge in the butler’s pantry? Then you have plenty of space for a large family’s needs but you don’t overwhelm your kitchen with a huge bulky fridge?
Love your new house! We are looking for a new home, as well, so your videos have been very inspiring! I am excited to watch the transformation.
Your videos are not dark!!!!! I like your thoughts on your rooms !!! Out front I would go with the stone you picked out !!! I also think the floors in the house should all flow together and match !!! I love the room you will make a large pantry !!!! Great idea !!!
I would also leave the beams natural wood too
I think you have wonderful ideas Cami! It’s overwhelming when there are so many projects…one room at a time may seem to keep things not so busy! I like the idea of lighter upper cabinets and perhaps some nice vintage hardware to blend the uppers and lowers. Have seen some beautiful choices on Etsy. The marble countertops you mentioned and straightening out that small peninsula would open things up so much in your adorable kitchen. The brick is really a beautiful feature. One color which is on Sherwin-Williams favorite list is a shade of white called Alabaster. I’ve had it on the inside of our home and recently my neighbor painted it on the outside, and is such a fresh and inviting white and not too stark. Best of luck and look forward to seeing your updates!
