- The government is planning the biggest welfare reform in a generation.
Work and pensions secretary Mel Stride is proposing sickness benefits cease for "many, many people" with depression and anxiety.
Instead they'll be offered "meaningful support" such as talking therapies and social care packages.
Stride says: 'the system should not paying people to deal with the ordinary difficulties of life.'
He also wants to give vouchers instead of money for some people on disability benefits.
These plans would likely stop payments for a varity of mental health and other problems.

Your male guest didn’t even know what PIP stood for!! I have MS and fibromyalgia, Does your guest know how hard it is to obtain PIP. I was a physio for 20 years and had to give up my career due to pain and fatigue. Before my diagnosis I went for a PIP assessment - it was one of the worst experiences of my life, and I was turned down. This sick note ban is cruel and inhumane, just like the government.

@@pinky-ud1rtI have adhd, had depression and everyone gets anxious, adhd isn’t an Illness, anxiety is easily treatable as proven by many others including my partner and depression made me work harder to pull myself out of it, but I suppose it’s easier to make excuses now days

I hear you. It's like it isnt enough for them that youve already been through hell, they then put you through the Spanish inquisition, otherwise known as the pip process! Plus physical illness ends in mental illness as well because if it's long term it's so hard to deal with!

They seem to forget that we were put into a lockdown for two years which played havoc on people's mental health. As a retired counsellor psychologist, in my experience mental health is complex. Also and equally important is the fact that mental health facilities are at breaking point in this country. It amazes me how self-righteous this government is considering the vast amounts of money wasted during the pandemic. Instead of going after the most vulnerable in society go after those who use tax havens to avoid paying tax. Too close to the bone methinks.

No Tory ever wants to ask WHY so many people are depressed or have other mental health conditions.

I have a housemate suffers from depression, anxiety and eating disorders. I can assure you from out of nowhere he can have a panic attack at least twice a week, this is accompanied by projectile vomiting and a feeling he is dying. I can't tell you the last time he saw a dentist because he's terrified to go out, he might get to see his GP once every 2 yrs. He sees a shrink and I can truthfully say I have taken him to every appointment for the last 20yrs. Some days he can't even step out of the door into the back garden and we are enclosed in, no one can see into the garden. I think the man decrying claimants does not know anything at all of mental health issues.
I'm the same. I can have a panic attack at anytime. It's horrible.
I get £1054 per month (pip/esa) no one pays my rent (£640pm) .. this leaves me £414pm for food & utilities.. I have secondary progressive ms.. which has put me in a wheelchair.. the immobility is now spreading to my arms.. I have put saving away to pay for equipment that I WILL need in the future.. this prevents me getting any help with rent rebates or council tax.. thus is the reality.. not what this program suggests.. they promote a senseless witch hunt.. 🙄🙄🤔🤔😎

@@garnhamr yes.. savings over 16k .. prevent eligibility for rent rebate through universal credit.. not to say, once I’ve spent savings below 6k.. on equipment ie elec wheelchair.. electric adjustable bed + chairs.. plus a daily carers.. (not nhs carers) agency 🙄🙄🤔😎

Plus also there using the benefit system as well. And how much have we given to Israel and Ukraine ? Well.. 12 billion to Ukraine so far on a war they won’t win and for the war in Israel - Palestine we have given 9billion for aid lol oh don’t forget about the billions we give in foreign aid to corrupt countries. @rafezetter8003 The joke is, in many cases those who are receiving benefits are fleecing the system. And those who don't need them don't receive them.
It’s ludicrous to think people will be stopped getting any benefits only to be forced to take a minimum wage job, assuming they are physically or mentally able to work, then have to rely on in work benefits to cover the cost of living. All the while they won’t get any help to overcome their mental health. A minimum wage job could very well just exasperate the mental health symptoms and fix nothing. The system is totally broken

Fix mental health care. If someone is stressed or in early stages of depression and prompt help is given they can be stopped from having a chronic condition. The poorer the services for people the more mental problems society will have. It’s not that difficult to fathom.

Having a little anxiety or depression is completely different to a lifelong diagnosis of anxiety and depression disorder. is not a gift it’s an absolute curse, every illness you have is ignored because they fob you off saying it’s just your anxiety and tell you to take a warm bath and have an early night.
Leave the poor and needy alone. My solution make the footballers pay 80% income tax on their earnings cos if you do the maths and you are a 'prima donna' on 150k per week you would still have 30k a week to live on. That's what I earn in a year and lets face it being a footballer is not a job it's an overpaid pastime!! The Tories have missed a massive trick here and how much extra money could they earn if they taxed these lovely!! Boys at this rate. I will be fair to them and let's say you only pay 80p in the pound income tax if your weekly!!!!! Do you know what would happen if you charged footballers 80% income tax? They would all move abroad, play for foreign clubs and the English football economy would fall apart costing the British economy billions. Don't target everyone with a depressive illness with the same brush. Everyone is different.
The real unemployment level is much higher than what they are telling you. If you are on a zero hour contract, you are not counted as unemployed, even if you have no work. Also if you are on minimum wage, and you have work for say only 6 days, you are not counted as unemployed for the remaining three weeks of the month. Don't let the Conservatives CON you into believing there is low unemployment.

@ Kellykreqeli8924 I don’t know where you got your information from, but I can assure you I was struggling to make ends meet and thanks to my friends giving me clothing for my three children I don’t know what I would have done. Many in work were earning £30 per week and many lost their homes because interest rate’s rose to 18.6% then in 1981 interest rates dropped to 15%. Then we had the Miners strike in 1984 thousands lost their homes and jobs. There was nothing wonderful about the 80s for ordinary families it was awful.

I think if people are going to discuss things like PIP on a show like this then they should do some research so they don’t make themselves look stupid. A lot of people in receipt of PIP work and pay their own rent. It’s not given as an out of work benefit or just to those unable to work. It’s to cover extra costs associated with being disabled. That could be higher energy bills due to medical equipment, extra care, extra transport costs. It also isn’t as easy to get as people think either.
Yep I know someone who works and claims PIP (now she knows she can get it for having copd. Srange thing is she was coping adequately without the benefit but once she knew she could claim it she was in there like a shot. At present she's off sick for at least 3 months. Will no doubt extend that to 6 months to get full pay for staying at home and. If she can afford it, have another 6 months half pay. When that runs out no doubt she will be back to work like she was a few years ago. Great when you get paid to have a sabbatical every few years

You have some people working whilst claiming PIP. You have many people not working, or can't work, who according to PIP's weird criteria aren't eligible.

They think they can only look after their own wallet - now, they see that its a bit harder to buy that third pair of heels that month - things seem to change in their "minds", quite quickly.
Like many right wing policies and conspiracies, there is a tinge of truth but the end goal is further austerity that impacts those that can least afford the cuts.
It took me 3 years to get help after my mum died in 2020 before you decided to cut people off make sure there are resources in place to help people to work
And make sure the that wages are in line for the cost of living
My son is 20 he has an educational plan he has Aspergers syndrome adhd extreme anxiety social phobia low moods with no confidence sleep problems he studies from home and he's tutor picked him up 2 days a week as he is with a familiar person and place
My son has meltdowns can't deal with bright lights loud sounds crowds through no fault of his own he was born with it and I never made bad choices mental health runs in my family
his an only child and he was a twin I lost one during pregnancy and autism can be prominent in twins

Ptsd is not a normal everyday thing. Those are universit y students who had no support during covid. Those that had their first time away from home. Who couldn't get back. Who were told if they left the course during covid they wouldn't get back and they'd still have the debt. My daughter walked into a job after 3 years of covid university. She managed 3 days and had a breakdown in the workplace...... Tell me you can fix that..... I'm a councellor... I can be mum or counsellor I know exactly what caused the depression

It’s because they’ve started taking it more seriously and actually diagnosing people correctly now instead of under diagnosing which would have happened years ago. The mental health system has got worse and worse year upon year resulting in more people not getting the support they need. That won’t be an overnight fix as it’s also the mentality of the staff you have running them there are NO reasonable adjustments for disabled people, so you should have at home mental health support like you do for physios for people who are house bound/ have severe difficulty getting out and so on. None of that is in place
People who are less able bodied need all the help and support they can get, in accordance with their level of incapacity. It's not their fault they have these issues. Whatever helps the most for those who need it is what should be on offer. Remember, the sign of a caring society, is how well looked after it's children, elderly and vulnerable are.
We are on very little money for a longer length of time, It's not that we can earn more by way of active work/overtime etc. The gov has wasted billions on bad investments/decisions and now is targeting the most vulnerable/ disabled in our society. PIP is not fit for purpose. why is it always a battle to get the correct points? the assessors manipulate the truth determined to award very few points, then we are forced to appeal in a magistrate court just to win our acknowledgement for PIP allowance. Like the post office scandal, it's a disgrace that causes unnecessary stress.

I know one who when you pass him in public snubs you. Seems as though he's only prepared to acknowledge your existence if you pay him. Definitely wouldnt go to see him if I needed a therapist.
I have a friend who tried a job some years ago he almost killed someone in the job so how are disabled people going to do jobs like electricity gas even farming can be dangerous and many other jobs so what jobs will they be able to do
Total disgrace. Those with genuine mental illness go through a life of hell. It is not the everyday difficulties of life that Stride talks of. It’s the dark deep well that a human falls into with no hope. I am a carer for someone and I am in my 70s. We are the lost people trying to cope against the hurricane that is coming.
Most young people cant get a decent full time decent pay package people have o hours contracts or 10hours plus flexi and have to barter for extra hours and treated like rubbish at work.
It amazes me that people that back this nonsense are people from the 70s onwards where social care was far more funded than it is now.
Housing cheaper, wages higher, energy cheaper, more and better paid jobs, list goes on.

what a great avert for the sucsess of "universal credit " ? they have been rolling it out forever and this proves its a falure, how long can you expect to hound someone to find a job if there are no jobs out there , before they feel depressed because they cant find something that isnt there ,there is no job security with agency work
The problem is, a lot of people need help and the DWP just want to force you look for any job without providing any help, yet they threaten you with sanctions if you don’t provide evidence of applying for jobs. I was unemployed many years back and nearly had a mental breakdown due to the stress and feeling so isolated and without any help. Also, the DWP don’t actually care if you get a job, they just want you off benefits so they can tick a box.
I have OCD and recently had a big relapse over the past year. This isnt mild anxiety or depression, it affects people on a daily basis and is one of the most debilitating illnesses you can have.
Ive been trying to access help via the NHS and there is none, essentially. If i want treatment ill have to go private but i cant afford it since I genuinely don't feel well enough to work.
I have never received any benefits in my life, but my only last hope of getting actual specialist treatment was if I was awarded PIP. Despite hardly leaving my home for six months and having suicide ideation on my records I still didnt receive a single point on their assessment criteria.
PIP is not something that is easy to obtain. The idea that people are easily obtaining it and fleecing the system is pure propagada Im afraid.
Im not your typical lefty soap dodger, but PIP is genuinely meant to be there to support people who need help - and in most cases those who should be eligible are turned away.
I am 73 so a pensioner not a claimant. Four yrs ago I became chronically ill due to a mystery virus. A lot of the time bedridden. Thought I was dying. My job was on my feet at 68 for 8 hrs a day with half hour break, heavy lifting. I had to literally beg my dr for sick notes. Got them at two weekly intervals. He had no understanding of my job, my age, my illness. After the endless pleading I gave up and gave in my notice in Feb 2020. So, no, it is not easy to get a sick note, it’s humiliating.

Surely Migration is more important to crackdown on. Focusing on the most vulnerable in society is absolutely disgraceful.my brother committed suicide as a result of mental health issues, my dad had bi polar and schizophrenia and i have got Cpstd , anxiety and depressive disorder from history of neglect S abuse, R--- and domestic violence .Not saying i cant work but it has to be remote as cant be in public or social settings so some support is needed.getting adequate care in the NHS is virtually impossible. Sending love to all Mental health sufferers its no joke .

To the team at Jeremy Vine - Check your sources. Outsourced Assessment has led to some serious mess ups in DWP. When PIP was announced letters were sent out to ALL claimants on DLA, PIP - comes under two forms - Getting Around and Personal Care, Its self explanatory. Work is another matter. If you want people back in meaningful work you need to provide some sort of support for their condition - If they have skills - provide the opportunity to use them.
Crack down on illigal immigrants first

Your igniting you have to pay for social care out of it, so that’s £150 a week for just 5 hours. You’re also ignoring all the added costs for for example incontinence diapers. If you’ve got social phobia/severe anxiety you can’t do public transport so that’s taxi costs, if you don’t go out alone that’s costs of the person supporting you for lunch if your out at the hospital. If for example you need to go somewhere that is several hours train ride away and trains out you in a state of panic attacks then you’d need to pay for a night over at a hotel as just getting there would be overwhelming. I’ve been physically disabled, and I’ve had depression and anxiety agoraphobia ect. I felt more free when I was unable to physically walk than I did with my agoraphobia. The brain is a powerful thing and that’s being doscounted

I blame austerity measures and the fact that people can’t find well paid jobs that will keep a roof over their heads and pay the bills. The stress these people are under is of the scale. Little wonder that there’s a rise in mental health issues. People need to feel that they are rewarded for work their wages should cover all of there expenses and there should be enough left over to save. That’s just a basic to lift people out of poverty.

Neurodiversity - high functioning autism & ADHD - still comes under the umbrella of "mental health" - there's often more to depression and anxiety but rarely covered.
When the goverment say they are gonna target "mental health" - most (if not all ) neuroderse suffer from anxiety and depression- but there is so much more complexity to the hidden disability - so if they are just lumped in the "mental health box - depression/ anxiety (diagnosis for Neurodiversity is 7year waiting list) then these people are gonna be forced into work with dire physical/ mental health consequences because of lack of tailored questionnaire for their condition and struggles - they need to evolve their assessment process and broaden their definitions of mental health.
If the government can afford it keep paying it if not stop it

We need to be mindful that depression is not the same as major depression with suicide ideation. And generalised anxiety is not the same as anxiety disorders like PTSD and OCD which is not just about fears of contamination but also includes debilitating, distressing intrusive thoughts and rumination’s that lead to paranoid thoughts. Mental health is complex and the scariest thing is, the people who have the biggest opinions about welfare reform are people who are sensualising this issue by making assumptions about mental health without any credible evidence to back up their findings and are completely ignorant, having no idea what it’s like to live with these longterm conditions on a daily basis.

2014 department of work and pensions tries to push my mum back to work she has a full mental breakdown and ends up getting sectioned in a mental hospital for a 3 months and then she's on permanent psychiatric medication for the rest of her life she cannot come off of them because they told her that she comes off of them they'll section her again because she is a risk to herself or others and this was all originally an anxiety issue because she suffered abuse but apparently that's not important you want people back to work and on courses right cos we're all lazy also it's not a new issue as you can see i did say 2014 it's every time there's an election rolling around they get after get tough on the benefit people

Lots of long covid which I have had .The bar has not been lowered for mental health issues .I have SEVERE mental health issues and I do not receive help.The waiting lists for therapy is far too long and if you actually get therapy is the therapy actually appropriate ? BTW who wants to live on benefits its a horrible life it is a depressing life .Employers do not want to employ they won't make the appropriate accomodations.I have had about twenty full and part time jobs and I have two university degrees eventually I was breaking down mentally and physically trying to work.If I could find appropriate part time work with support I would work.The fact that there are more people claiming for mental health issues may also have to do with fact that many people went undiagnosed struggling for years to keep their lives together.I was diagnosed with autism and PTSD at 52 after struggling to stay in work and manage my life for many years.I had no other option except maybe the street I would have been made homeless. The government view is extremely short sighted they are not seeing the full picture.Employers also need to take some responsibility for this and offer the right support to help peopke stay in work.

I was left sick during the pandemic I had a bad heart an was not followed up by any doctor with it I was neglected which then left me very poorly I rang the doctors many times to be told to take antibiotics when I didn't need them
Greater Manchester mental health crisis team are disgusting to their patients,they don’t care what happens your chance at seeing a really doctor is slim if the assessment person wants to just tick no because that’s all it is numbers no one’s a patient anymore

At what point did the Government put this policy to an electorate and get a mandate for it? Back in 2019, they were claiming that Britain would be better off and the country could look forward to ‘levelling up’. Now they are just ‘cracking down’ on disadvantaged people.
I’d love to work always have since I was 14! Became too unwell to work in 2011, I have had 57 surgeries in 10 years and have paralysed organs and have 3 tubes to survive a SPC catheter that needs care, bowel irrigation daily, draining G tube of gastric contents into bags and all feeds and fluids and meds all down the J tube into my bowel that’s 24 hours a day I have to get up 5 times between midnight and 6am to do pancreatic enzymes with all my feeds & fluids over 24 hour schedule or I don’t absorb them the alternative is TPN so I cannot work as I’m never able to get any rest I’m always doing meds, feeds, fluids, enzymes 24 hours a day and on controlled drugs that an employer wouldn’t allow on site! I’m now scared to death as I have to purchase a lot of items the NHS cannot provide and I have a large number of care hours I need. I had to appeal for pip over 2 years before I could get awarded it I never have enough to cover my disability expenditures annually. Ps. I have Motability wheelchair so all my mobility component has gone so I have none left monthly and the care element all of it goes to my local authority towards my care! It’s insane so essentially they give with one hand and take it away with the other. I also only get £54 a week ESA. It’s ridiculous and I know 2 families committing pip fraud, going on many holidays abroad for like 6 wks, while supposedly too sick and going to loads of festivals and doing pub events, working cash in hand I can go on I digress, but they’re too sick with severe MH issues can’t work and claim everything makes me mad! They also go out all the time. My pip was stopped after being in hospital 7 months very poorly and frequently being hospitalised on and off (28 day linking rule) effecting the sickest of us it’s messed up!
This type of skiving has been going on for many years and has got worse of late.I am not saying they arn't ill but I know of people who are quiet happy getting something for nothing.
The system isn't paying people to deal with the ordinary difficulties of life.
PIP..... Personal INDEPENDENCE (key word!) payment. This is given to people who struggle to be independent. People who experience difficulties, illnesses and disabilities, and the extra costs that come from this. A lot of which, for many people, are lifelong!

Caring nation, when you are literally trying to justify people's illness and availability of support, when it's most definitely not easily accessible. As with much support.
The lady taking tablets a few days before, so it was in her system when she was checked, would not have worked. It takes at least a month or two for medication to properly be in your system. So the medical team would have noticed that in their readings.
I love how no one has mentioned the huge waiting lists for children and teenagers (young people!), even for children struggling with self harm and similar issues. Also the impact of COVID!

My friend had an interview for Pip she has a left prosthetic arm and stump fingers on her Right hand. The interviewer had wrote down on her form that she had nice finger nails. How disgusting is that. I dont think the interviewers can be arsed and if they are writing down wrong informations they are not observing or listening to the client properly.
What’s Rowena on about. It’s no such thing. Whoever gets that is such a rarity. My daughter is homeless, has a brain tumour plus many other conditions. She gets about £300 per month.

I have paranoid schizophrenia and Asperger’s syndrome , I work part time and was advised by my local benefits office not to put them on my cv or I would never get a job. I made the mistake before and felt it would be okay to tell my employer, I was made to feel so uncomfortable I had to leave. I was born with these illnesses, I have them through no fault of my own . I was brought up to believe everyone should try and do something, but if I tell the truth people treat me like I’m an axe killer or worse. What do they want people like me to do? People do use depression and anxiety as an excuse, try living my life for a day. You would do anything to be just “ normal “
I have suffered with anxiety and depression for far too long now (over 30 years) and have extreme fatigue and hope to be assessed for autism as I find a lot of the time things can get so overwhelming and I can’t cope, my brain just wants to shut down. A shitty minimum wage, soulless job won’t help me. I absolutely hear you when you say you would do anything just to be normal.
I have austim and receive PIP for this I also work but I need PIP for support for my every day challenges in life because of my disability I hope the government don’t take it away from me because I genuinely need to it along with millions of people who do need PIP need to target the people who are faking it and have no disability I have evidence so the government won’t take it away from me because I will appeal and get them done for discriminating against me.
My mate gets full PIP and treated himself to a motorbike
He’s been to Alton towers 2 this month and gets a special ticket so he doesn’t have to wait in line oh and they gave him a new car

Also immigrants are taught how to apply for PIP before they get here

Sounds like they are looking after their buddies again. Only businesses on the voucher scheme benefit. Whereas independent family run businesses won't be on it. Now people can spend anywhere. If they do this only the likes of Asda, Morrisons etc will benefit as they do with the school meal vouchers. There's no option to spend at a local butcher or fruit and veg shop on them. It's not only going to badly affect disabled people but will affect the business sector too.
