The Saab 35 fighter aircraft started being planned as a replacement for the J 29 Tunnan in the autumn of 1949 under the leadership of Erik Bratt. The Swedish defence materiel procurement authority required the aircraft to perform at high supersonic speeds and be able to engage targets at high altitudes.

My father constructed the engine installment in J35. He managed to design an installment that allowed the entire engine to be connected via just a few bayonette attachments where three were responsible for fuel, avionics and electronics. That allowed the entire engine to be exchanged in just a few minutes. That might sound easy, but in reality exhaustingly difficult to design taking into consideration the temperature differences and stress on the engine itself. That was his proudest moment as an engineer...
What an achievement it was. It's never been done since.

He was, but after the success of the engine installment he was promoted to missiles and got heavily involved in that side of engineering. But he started with SAAB and the early stages of the J 35 and the miniature configuration of the future aircraft that was constructed. If you haven't seen it it was called ”the mini J 35”.

Björn, here in California my SAAB car dealer was Tor (and later Tom) Gustafsson. For a time, Tor worked for SAAB building aircraft, at a Swedish factory which I recall him saying was inside of a mountain. Tom told me stories about seeing fighter jets emerging from the forest and using the public roads for take-off! Taking my car in for service was always something fun to look forward to. Tor's SAAB in Lompoc, the best.

The English dubbing over the Swedish ground control reminds me of old Japanese monster movies.......Draken was an incredible aircraft, just behind the F-104 and F-106 in my heart. As the Swedes would say, Draken är häftigt!

Sounds corny for me swede, but listening in on same types of american planes comersials, then its a commanding superamerican western voice talking high about everything like its superheroes or something, really like a bad movie.
Its not dubbed but sounds like the flaggs will show up any second thats how goid it is hehe.
Still good to se the puctures of the old planes, the buyers here was Finland, Denmark and Austria so they probably wasnt any better englishspeakers themselves.

F104 starfighter us line a brother from another mother here, it was also built to be fast in reaching big heights and shoot down soviet jet bombers.
But they never built them, USA never used F104 themseves i think only european nato countries had them, mistly Germanny, ut was a fast missilike fighter but dangerous, alot if accindent happened, the first varuant with ejection downwards was crazy.
Draken was not tame either, it had a tendensy uf you dived hard the controls wold not respinse and you would crash full speed shead in the ground.
And as in all times, the pilots took more risks then, i guess it was so all over, they could fly more for real and they tried stuff.
As you name F104 i guess tour nit anerican so you probably know more, especially german would know about the f104.
And F106 Delta Dart, you shiukd like F102 Delta Dagger too, they are related, bur the 192 are more in the age of these, booth fully deltawinged plans, but 106 is later than a Draken or a F104.
I must say i like alot if the century jets as they are called, F105 thud may be a little boring, but F100 super sabre is fun.
Thise days jetfighters really looked right i think sonyes im mistly intrested in that era.
And yes i line som soviet ones too mig17 but after that i dont know until Mig29 that was mist possible as good as a F16, and i line the F16, the real one not the one with a cheaper engine and shit.
F16 may have been the best in its time, and clisely shadowed by Mig29 :-)

Indeed AUSTRIA used them until the arrival of Eurofighter. Due to an incompetent planning and a government not willing to procure a jet that was full capable to fight the Eurofighters of the Austrian Armed Forces are not as effective as the J 35 Drakens once were.
In 2003 a pair of Drakens even intercepted a F 117 Nighthawk flying in the radar shade of an KC 135 over Austrian territory- the flight wasn‘t approved due to Austrias neutrality- forbidding flights of military armed aircraft in austrian air space.
There was a lot of rumor in the media when a quite modern stealth bomber was intercepted by a fighter dating back to the 50‘s.

It was built to shoot down high flying russian bombers, but russia never built any, so its mostly like the F104 starfighter a rocket with short range, get up to hights fast shoot down bombers and down agan reload and up again.
Both those jetfighters was bult for meeting something that never came.
Its famous for having no measured top speed, it accelerates until it depletes its fuel.
So best? It was a double dektawing construction that is unique looking.
And many thinks Draken means Dragon, but it refers to a kite, its the same word in swedish and its how it looks say from the underside.
But as a small country its amazing we could build something like it, and not even J29 tunnan (the barrel) was bad but better than a mig 15 and ok maybe a bit behind F86 Sabre as a dogfighter, mig 17 us up there but is later.
Mig 15 was built to shoot down american bombers so it had weapons for that and even if Sabre at first had pretty weak .50 cannons it was more suited to hunt other fighters.
Most dobt know that SAAB J29 is a brother in that company and the only Swedish jet to be used in war, the Congo war, and that was in the 60s it wirked well even if it was old by then.
Draken wouldnt have been as good there, the A32 Lansen would have been better but it was enough.
I think A32 Lansen was nice too, we built our own ground and sea attack jetfighter, instead of say buing the american T33 Thunderstrike for example.
J37 Viggen was underated i think, that was early computerized for having a team on the ground leading the fight with radars etc, other countries instead had a navigator behind the pilot doing that.
But ok now its 1960 before Viggen so, before Vietnam too soo F4 Phantom ii may not count, and its a really heavy two seater with two engine, it didnt at first even have a cannon, and the missiles sucked so badly the flying guys cimplauned to get a cannon.
F104 was like a rocket with short wings, its soo nice looking, but was hard to fly, alot if accidents, it was only used by NATO countries in Europe i think, mostly Germany.
The first version catapulted the pilot downwards even.
Still it us faster to gain height than the Draken, but more unsafe, in those days the swedush fliers were much more macho than today so it happened alot if accidents just when playing.
They often met up wirh russuan fighters ver the Baltic sea.
A number of J29 tunnan met up to some migq15 over the wea, they couldnt shoot but everybody wanted to show the others.
The j29 turned away making the migs chasing them, it was firbidden to do but the swedes has trauned in flying in a scissors way, meaning they cross eachother close iver and over.
The russians didnt want to do worse so they tried that to, two mig15 crasched ttogheter and went down and the rest gave up.
You can have a little war in many ways, i like those days, theres more stories, but today its dead, russia flies in over Sweden and we just let them, they was escorted off by a Estonian nato F16.
The only right thing wold to have sent up a Gripen to do the same.
A Viggen locked rhe radar on the american spyplane Blackbird just for fun, it had to start when the blackbird was at the highest point up north flyging south again outside the soviet lines, well it started and whent straight up, topping is max level in height and locked the radar on the blackbird on its way south.
Like i say today its all boring, wrre no friends to Putin, but we have no military ready anymore crazy, it will never be a war again it was said in the 90s, talk about total failure in thinking.
So all went away, not even having fighters on F16 were big citys are and three reactors.
We using Nato and Finland to keep us safe importing arabs and black wirthless people to live here.
The land if the forests and the mines us now best in importing people most unlike us and Koran readers following the war for geting all the world musslum or dead.
We can watch this and look back just to forget how badly this is goung to be, we have sold off most industries needs no oirkers for that, giving away whole lifes to people not having paid anything back instead if helping ourself first.
You cant even vote, then all is socialist no matter what, and the one with 20% workers dont count, the voters of that party dont coynt as democratic swedes.
There is no western coyntry working that way for sure, its the same as only getting one thing whatever you vote.
Normally if so many wants to discuss the problem with taking in so much people without a plane even, then it should be discussed too.
Thats democracy, this is some crazy one party only thing.
Sweden has built almost anything you can think of, to be ready for survive on our own if needed, now all is gone.
And dont say Volvo cars, thats sold to communist slave Chins, great, the newer models coms in parts from china more and more to be put togheter here just to get the name and wash away China, but it is Chinese cars now, Seden dont own it and simply as it v and S90s the new ones is not one bit Volvo, greysocialusts fool themsef with those cars only.
I tvink its a way to help China a country i wish was totally chut diwn making lots of cheap chit we dont need with slaves to keep low prizes, all bad tvings from the factorys goesr straight out in the ocen or the air, and this s one world, all get it.
Mostly its USAs fault that dont say stop we need to look this over, they just want cheap shit forever, they fighting terrorism you know but not slavery and communism at all only you give them stuff, Soviet gulags did not give USA anything so those were bad.
      its the same thing.

From my understanding of now declassified manuals, the "strobe" referred to at 5:20 was a manual preset of a distance measuring circuit so it would "know" when to expect the echo from the target it was supposed to lock on to. I.e to "trick" the distance part of the lock circuits into getting started. The circuit would then expect the returns from the locked target to appear in some short interval close to each previous return. The strobe is the short horizontal bar seen just below the target dot, the target then "wanders" into the strobe bar and the radar locks, or something like that.

Draken was planned as a high altitude interceptor for 100.000 ft (30.000 meter) and therefore pilots needs space suits like the one at 2:30.
The swedish engine capable for high altitude was dropped in favour for a brittish engine and the max altitude was like 65.000 ft (20.000 meter) so the space suite was not necessary in production Drakens.

@dosware At least in the sixties and seventies, when I grew up we were all stunned by both 35 "Draken" and 37" Viggen" and their beauty. They were designed to, at least the "Viggen", to be able for take off and landing on public roads in case of war.
    (Among other things.)

Remember it do twice the sonic speed its accelerates untill the fuel s depleted really.
So somebody must have been over the soundspeed befire in a straight flying?
A french? A brittsh, the only ones possible

Super Mystere appears to be earlier (first flight March 1954 compared to October 1955 for the Draken). The UK was flying supersonic test aircraft earlier as well; the P1A (forerunner of the Lightning) had a first flight in August 1954 and the Fairey Delta 2 in October 1954. Lightning appears to have beaten the Draken into service as well though only by 3 or 4 months (December 1959 compared to March 1960).

@Raxacolicofalapatorien facho et national-socialiste Lightning P1B achieved Mach 2 on 25th November 1957. This appears to be prior to the Mirage III (unless you can find data that contradicts this). However the Mirage IIIA was the first European aircraft to exceed Mach 2, reaching Mach 2.2 in October 1958.

Such a cool aircraft. I think it was the first that could do the "cobra" maneuver that the Russians are so proud of half a century later. Swedish engineers make some really cool things.
I wonder how useful those early air-to-air missiles were, however. Not the plane's fault, of course.

"Draken" means "The dragon" in swedish. It was named that way because of its incredible wingspan and manouverability. But it sounds weird to say "The Draken", since it's like saying "The The Dragon"
