Ohtani has a literal market cap of a billion plus dollars due to his image and ties with the Japanese market, Soto only has a bat. No way in blue hell is Soto worth what Shohei is.
Any team that pays Soto anything above $400 Million is insane. He's an exceptional hitter, but that's it. Subpar fielding, subpar baserunning, he can't pitch, and he doesn't have an international brand. If he gets Ohtani money, then the poor team who gives him it is screwing themselves over for the entirety of his contract. Especially since he probably won't defer any money either.
He's certainly getting over 400. I'd say even 500 is almost a certainty. The real question is how close it gets to 600. He's obviously not as value as Ohtani, but he is four years younger, which is a factor here.
@BobSmith-kw6mg I agree he's not as valuable as Ohtani for all the reasons you mentioned, but again, he's only 26. That's an important part of this equation. He will top Trout because that was an extension, so no open market bidding. Soto is two years younger than Trout was when he got that extension. On top of that, Trout's contract was five years ago. Player contracts only go up over time as the league sees ever growing revenue. When you factor all of that, he easily tops $500 million, IMO. I don't think we see $600 unless he signs for 15 years or accepts deferrals.
He's good in the playoffs so you are getting guaranteed .780+ ops in the postseason with him, but that's still not worth a $600+ contract which is what he's gonna get. I don't think he's gonna defer money either. That being said teams willing to pay the luxury tax up to the final apron (maybe slightly more after the double 110%) can afford his services and still fill out the roster properly for a playoff run. You are paying $15 mil extra over another slugger a year because you know he's not gonna swing and miss and be a threat in the middle of the line up in the playoffs. Also the contracts gonna be over like 13 years so the aav will not be terrible and you go into cost cutting mode at the tail end of the contract. It's basically just the mets and yankees bidding for his services. I don't think it makes sense for the dodgers even if they can afford him.
I understand that Soto is one of the best hitters of this generation but he can barely field and doesn’t pitch. So I don’t think he deserves Ohtani type money
I agree, I watched Juan Soto's games this year and his fielding cost the Yankees numerous games, has no range in defense, also does'nt have any speed is a bad baserunner, including having only 6 stolen bases and caught 4 times, Ohtani has 59 stolen base caught 4 times.
If any team offers Soto, Ohtani money, and it's not deferred, that team will never win a World Series because the team will not have any money left to build a quality team around him.

If Im an owner I say no way, I rather have another great hitter, and get a great pitcher out there, also a player with some speed. Wait Ohtani can do all that, that's why he got the money, if Soto wants $600 million he better do all that to.
Only Chance Soto gets anywhere close to Ohtani's contract is if he also defers a significant amount it. I don't know Soto personally but idk how many people would wanna defer the money. Ohtani is kinda the unicorn in everything
And where do soto bring the money back in for the owner? Usa fans? Lol or his team fans? Soto is not global. Who ever sign soto with that money will go broke
As a Dodgers fan, I'd seriously be disappointed if they ended up giving that dude half a billion dollars. Not in a million years is a 1 tool player with a gigantic ego worth anywhere near that
Speaking from the cardinals fan perspective of the Contreras topic. I know Trev mentioned his defense and that might be why he thought the FO made that move. According to Mo it’s a move to keep him healthy moving forward because statistically he’s been our best hitter in his 2 seasons. Also, and i think most importantly, we have Ivan Herrera and Pedro pages and Herrera in ‘22 was supposed to be the yadi successor but as a prospect he needed more time. I think now as the cardinals are openly entering a retool or transition they are giving him those reigns. Just my opinion, i consider the Contreras move similar to Harper to first.
As a Cardinals fan myself, I understand all that & I am not necessarily opposed to the move if he must stay. However doing so basically eliminates Bakers spot on the roster. Which I'm ok with as well. I'm just not ok with taking up 5 roster spots for C & 1B/DH. I want Burleson listed as a 1B/DH along with Contreras or Baker, not both. Baker should go if Contreras is now a 1B/DH. This allows you to avoid both Walker & Burleson as 2 of our OFs & leaves room for 4 OFs, 4 IFs plus Donovan to what Donny do.
@ yes i agree with Burleson, he can slot in as a corner outfielder first baseman as his primary positions. Personally I’m out on Luken Baker I don’t think he’s particularly part of the bigger plan of the FO. That’s just my opinion on that so that’s also why I’m ok with the Contreras move, I am however a person that doesn’t want to move Walker to first. Only reasoning is he’s still young and his athletic peak is still to come so I think some outfield seasoning could help him be serviceable defensively. Either way though, I’m not high as if we’re gonna make the playoffs next year, but I think the cardinals will be average to competitively average where they can steal a final playoff spot. As their ceiling of course, but I’m actually not as down on the cardinals current decisions to enter into a transition between windows. What do you think though?
I think it makes them look foolish but there are reports from Derrick Goold who said Contreras and Gray want to stay in St. Louis. Contreras is aware of the move to 1B.
Mookie's grab off the wall from Verdugo's hit was one of the best plays you'll ever see from a right fielder. Unlike my Yankees, the Dodgers can handle a roster with players with similar skill sets, so they have a lot of options for next season.
Posey and Yadi were the best catchers this generation. Yadi of course had a longer career but since Yadi retired there aint no one that can control the game from behind the plate while still raking like Posey and Yadi could.
the boras puns are way underrated. None of these fools would be able to do that. It tells us a lot. Pete has a lot of suiters when people believed it was only mets or a few other teams.
The Padres did give the Dodgers a run for their money. The only team in the post season that was up on the Dodgers 2-1 and Dodgers were facing elimination once again. I would agree the Padres were the toughest team Dodgers faced in the playoffs.
It’s not that hard to see. Mookie has been vocal about wanting to move back to the infield to save his legs. He is not the same outfielder he once was and he has said as much.
Ohtani lives off his endorsement money and the Dodgers are supplemented by Japanese fans who cross the ocean to buy Dodger and Ohtani gear. Boras won’t want Soto’s contract deferred and Soto’s value as such is nowhere near Ohtani for the Dodgers.
The fact that The Dodgers value depth and versatility on their roster is exactly why Lux is probably headed out. He is not usable anyplace other than second base.
I'm curious if Soto will even be signed if he's dead set on trying to get 600 plus million in FA. I wouldn't be surprised if this goes into next season.
Juan Soto didn't make the Padres better when the Padres were loaded. Padres got better after he left. He has a bad locker room presence. Not many even knew who Juan Soto was until the playoffs. He's just not marketable. He wasn't even the top 10 player in MLB until he batted in front of Judge.
This Contreras to 1st thing is just another trash move by my beloved Cardinals. This dumpster fire of an organization is getting harder & harder to watch everyday.
If he does, baseball is a joke since if they go by strictly based on the numbers. Compared his numbers this year with Shoman ain't even close during regular season. Might have an edge a little during playoff but Shoman was hurts
Cardinal fan here. We aren’t worried about his defense we have young talent behind the plate. We also need his bat in the lineup as we basically rebuild the next two years. You guys don’t follow the team his defense wasn’t the issue. We just want him healthy and now he’s gonna be a beast hitter at first base.
As a Cards fan I agree with you. If they look foolish for signing Contreras on a long term deal, mark this as another foolish blunder from the John Mozeliek era. 2026 can’t get here soon enough. I’m ready for a rebuild with fresh thinkers and get a WS.
