Hi my name's Oddie Beau and I've been a 'collector' of oddness for as long as I can remember. Whether it be strange & obsolete eclectic items, or stories of strange and eccentric persons - they have found their way to me through the passage of time. A passion for history and a love of antiques has entwined with a morbid curiosity for vintage crime cases and bizarre true tales. I have tried to bring all these ingredients together on my channel. It's always a pleasure to find like minded souls... Let us begin... This video is over two years old and was first shown on my Patreon - the text format in this video was experimental and was never used again.
Where do you suppose it comes from? I'm the same way, but don't know why. There is one oddment that slipped through my fingers when I was small. It was a tiny white octopus preserved in a baby food jar with formaldehyde, and I was fascinated with. It belonged to my great uncle, and disappeared from its spot on the fence after he died. There were blackberries, plums, pears, and walnuts growing there, and lots of bamboo for fishing poles,, but no more mystery when the octopus vanished.
Oddie Beau, I don't think your curiosity is morbid at all. It's actually quite natural to explore the "other side" of man's duality. I, for one, thank you for your curiosity and dedication to the research and presentation of these stories. It's always a thrill for me to see when "Oddie" has explored a new topic. God bless you and yours, and I hope you never stop searching! (P.S. I also love your sense of humor 😉.)
I feel sorry for Bessie. Doesn't sound like she really wanted to do this trip. I think she was talked into it by her husband who was seeking fame and fortune. He did everything to make it as dangerous and daredevil as possible. No life jackets, winter weather, a homemade boat and picked their Honeymoon... all for a reason . $$$$. Bessie had never been on a river before - imagine the sheer terror of those rapids to a novice. Of course she smiled for the camera, all about good publicity prior to the trip. I'll bet she had a sense of foreboding.
They refused additional life jackets, I think they had their own. And she had been on the river before, didn't he say she had been precising the rapids?
This story has always been fascinating to me and I do believe it may have been featured on a television series Unsolved Mysteries. It truly is unsolved and while many theories have come about we will never actually know what happened. Still as always you have brought it to life with your amazing narration ❤❤
@@ObsoleteOddityHI Oddie I just recently found your channel and I subscribed right away. I'm hooked now and I've got a lot of catching up to do,but I'm here to stay so.
If they were murdered their supplies would have been stolen. If Bess had murdered her husband she wouldn't have stayed in the area for decades after. I'm curious whether they took their birth certificates and marriage license on the trip with them (seems unlikely) but I assume Georgie had them made when she began fancying herself to be Bess. The only logical conclusion is that one fell into the river and the other tried to save them. It fits all the known clues.
@@shirleyblaisdell9445 - we don't know where the accident happened and the Colorado River has countless places that bodies could be wedged and lost (eventually eaten by wildlife). It's sad but not impossible.
That’s what it sounded like the moment he said their camp, boat and supplies all looked intact and tidy. For some reason one went into the river accidentally and the other went in for rescue. The reason their bodies aren’t found is because that is a massive, violent and long river that heads out to sea and with spring melt their bodies could easily be washed away.
This is the only conclusion I can come to. Their supplies *would* have been stolen if they were murdered, perhaps the boat too. Would love to know if there really were one set of footprints, two, or none. Very strange that Georgie got it into her head that she was Bessie, and had the birth and marriage certificates. Some type of mental illness at play.
The Kolb brothers should have been investigated more closely. That's awfully suspicious that they saw them last and years later a skeleton was hidden inside their boat house.
Wow, microfiche! There's a word I haven't heard in a while. The last time I had to look something up on microfiche was in 2002, and it was a surgical report from the early 1970s.
So many captivating mysteries! And beautifully presented as usual. I imagine the folks who adventured on the Colorado during that time were quite the cast of characters. Thanks so much!
Wow how hauntingly tragic. And of course the story told so well by Oddie. His precipitation upon reading of that "foreshadowing" poem, proves again of his keen sense of giving the listeners food for thought. Thanks Oddie! Much Love.
There could be one set of footprints, but made by both of them. It was common for men to break a trail in snow and then have companions use their prints to make following easier.
Two things. 1. Abuse is not usually something that happens at the beginning of a relationship. It often starts small and gets to be more and more as the relationship continues, especially when higher stress times occur. 2. By late in the year, fish start to go dormant. The Colorado River gets extremely cold in the winter. They could have been eaten, but something of them should have turned up. Granted, they didn't have the search abilities we have now. It just seems strange to assume they were eaten without anything, including bones or clothing, found at all. The best way to disappear without a trace is a grave though that would have been hard to dig that late in the year as well. I wonder if modem forensics would have a more interesting answer about the skeleton now.
That’s true, but there’s actually no evidence that there was any abuse here - it may have been a rumour started on the Internet. Well, there’s not just fish, but other animal scavengers that would take the bones and gnaw on them and displace them over a wide area.
@@ObsoleteOddity agreed, there's no evidence of pretty much anything about the two of them together. I just know some people blame victims thinking they should have known better, and that's not how it works. True enough, even a raccoon will rip in if they're hungry. This is the kind of thing that would piss off readers of a novel. Reality stranger than fiction.
@elleembee6335 you’re right though, in hindsight my comment about her smiling and looking cheerful, really doesn’t mean anything - and you are right, abuse starts off slowly in a relationship. There is so much more that I would like to know about their relationship, and really the whole evidence, obviously as you can see by the mainstream narrative, they didn’t even have it right about the footprints. So that means there’s been a lot of evidence that’s been overlooked or lost to time.

What a story! I was wondering if they ever compared a photo of Bessie and the woman claiming to be her??? I had a thought when it was said that Bessie shot her husband and then left alone…..but what if the Kolb brothers were following her and saw it & the skeleton was her husband whom Kolb decided to hide in a place in his home?? What a heartbreaking story. And what a mystery! I think they were young, in love, on their honeymoon, and something terrible happened. Just not sure what, exactly. The Kolb men are very sus, especially the skeleton in the boat shed. Their photo gave me the willies as well. The Hyde's photos showed a young, happy couple on the adventure and honeymoon of a lifetime. I tend to think they were likely murdered, and that's a tragedy. Sadly, we'll probably never know. And that poem at the end - it's like a portent! Thank you for another wonderful tale, Oddie
Definitely a fascinating story of this couple that pretty much vanished into thin air without leaving a trace of evidence behind as to what might of happened. It's all very haunting & mysterious exactly my cup of tea. Love these kinda mysteries & as always u present them brilliantly. The attention to detail & life u put into these stories is very impressive man. You're a natural one of the best storytellers on RUclips. It's clear that Bessie was abit reluctant to go on that trip & had to be persuaded to do us by her husband who clearly was abit of a daredevil & risk taker in the fact he didn't wanna take life jackets. Fact that the boat was sturdy & wasn't damaged in any capacity & all their belongings were intact & wasn't missing makes me think that 1 of them fell into the freezing river & the other one jumped in to try & save their loved one but due to the temperature of the water & rapids etc both most likely succumbed to hypothermia & there bodies were most likely eaten by different species in that area. That's my theory
Oldie a great mystery of this couple. I do hope they went together and happy in Heaven. As far as Emery yes I wouldn't of trusted him either. Something doesn't set right because how the boat was found and they're supplys on board. Best wishes to you from Oklahoma in United States 🇺🇸
What would I do without you Oddy!!? 🤔🧐 You have become a comfortable treat in my life. Always impressed 👍 You are very appreciated for all the hard work you do for us! Much Love sent your way from Regina Saskatchewan Canada ✌️ 💜
Another wonderful mystery! Thank you, Oddie! I guess I tend to believe that they had gone overboard. That makes the most sense with what was found. But I'm fascinated by the whole Kolb discovery. There's another good story behind that, I'm sure!
I think they made have found misfortune (possibly hitting rapids, or mistook a small rapid for what could be falls.), and the reason nobody found them, is probably scavenging animals using their bodies as nourishment in a harsh, unforgiving biome where every calorie is sacred.
I suspect the boat got away from them, not secured properly so they were left without anything to help them being stranded. I think the elements, exposure, lack of survival knowledge, bit of hubris (I would say) contributed to their death. Mountain lions roam the area. The couple would have been easy prey. Wolves and coyotes as well as other animals may have scattered remains. Kolb really had no solid motive for killing them, IMO. They should do a facial reconstruction of the murdered man or try to extract DNA, put it thru genealogy data banks, see if anything connects him to relatives. Love your channel!
Thanks for the upload Oddie. I was lucky my family traveled the United States when I was a kid and I saw the beautiful Grand Canyon once before. About Glenn and Bessie Hyde: This was a Fascinating and baffling case I have never heard about before you told us. Do not know what to make of this case. Oddie your theory could be correct. The Hydes could have been killed by those brothers. Kind of reminds me of the movie "Deliverance" where business people go to the backwoods and meet hillbillies who attack them. Very good and recommended movie with Burt Reynolds, John Voight, Ned Beatty and Ronny Cox. 💕💕
I believe that the Colorado river was swollen and they got caught up in the rapids and no survivors 😢 many armchair detective think that the boat had a big part of the mystery and the Discovery channel did a feature about this as well.
I believe the obvious story. But have to admit the story of the Kolbs makes me very suspect. Maybe one of their many victims. Sad sorry and very interesting. Thanks Oddy.
This odd story reminds me of a couple taking a modern day cruise when the wife fell off the balcony. The husband didn't hesitate, he jumped in after her. They were never found but really it would have been better to call man overboard to the Captain so they could mark where she fell. They took 2 days to find out they were even missing!
I've heard of this story before, but you brought more information than I had heard of! Yes, very interesting about Kolb...hmmm. The poem was hauntingly befitting the story! Maybe it was an omen of things to come?
It sounds to me like Bessie and Glen might have hit a really bad rapid and couldn't control their boat because it is too coincidental that this other lady who claimed to be Bessie wasn't since she looked nothing like her and my guess is that the Colorado River knows the answer and it's not talking.
Oddie, your intuition is sharp.. I think you are on to something. Perhaps these two guys tried something bad with Bessie, and killed Glenn... I don't hope. But there are people like that out there 😢
I certainly hope that didn’t happen either my friend, but two young people out in the wilderness would be targets for certain people who look for opportunities like that. Opportunities where such a predator(s) would not get caught.
Hello Oddity. Great story. Sad as well. I believe that those two guys did something to the young couple. Perhaps. The two guys, wanted to be the ones to arrive and in the papers as celebrates .God bless you my friend. ❤
Had similar thought of Kolb in the very moment I saw the photo of him. Lonely, old bachelor offering a couple to live with him over winter? I got the creeps.
Yes Bessie Hyde was very attractive and her smile in that photograph looked natural to me. Even her husband's smile looked natural. Ive never heard this story prior to this. I think the Kolb bloke had something to do with it especially with the fact that a skeleton with a bullet wound to the temple was found on his property. Yes its a very interesting mystery that makes me want to know more, but i think you covered most of it very well. I still lean towards Kolb. Since no tattered clothing or skeletal remains weren't found they could have been buried somewhere in the wilderness by Kolb.
It is possible the last person to see them alive did the deed and walked away; they fell in the rapids; or, perished during a bout of bad weather. Animals would have scattered their bones. But, no one ever found any clothing nor bone fragments? A capsized boat wouldn’t be found right side up with everything intact, would it? One thing for certain sure is, God knows what happened to them. The skeleton found in the boat house may have known what happened to the couple as well. Very sad. Thank you for sharing this couple’s story.
There are so many things that could’ve happened to them, all we can do is conjecture. Too much time has passed by for this ever to be solved. Very glad you enjoyed the presentation!
OMG, that poem! 😢 Georgie is Bessie! I just know it. With the advances in criminal foresics, they should reopen the case. Check the gun they found at Gerrgie's and the bullet in the dead man in the canoe. If this case hasn't been reviewed since the 70s, well... 🤷🏼♀️☮🌹
As I mentioned during the presentation, Georgie‘s life was well documented - she is definitely not Bessie. They don’t even look alike, Georgie had a slightly hooked nose, while Bessie had a snub nose. It has been proved beyond any doubt that Georgie was not Bessie.
@@ObsoleteOdditysigh! I wish they could solve this. I thought of that young couple a few years ago in America, who were traveling by van and in the mountains of Colorado her boyfriend killed her, then he went home and into the woods in Florida and killed himself. Adventures are cool, but not when they end in mystery and death. Even if these kinds of stories are fodder for couch sleuths. I hope you and Oddette have a great summer. 🙂👍⛱🌹☮
Yeah, me too, such crimes these days are much easier to solve, although not always. But back then people lost in the wilderness, there was little chance of being found whether they had been murdered or fallen victim to an accident.

They could do forensic genealogy on the skeleton with the bullet hole to find who he was related to. They do it with Jane and John Doe's. It may help answer that question.
The one thing I don't get is how the fish could eat an entire body, bones and all. Wouldn't bodies (or portions thereof) have washed up somewhere on the river? Thanks for your always intriguing stories.
Fascinating story! I had never known about this! Dont police always look closely at the partner or the last person to have been known to be with the victim? Couldnt DNA be used now to confirm whose skeleton it was found in the Kolbs boathouse? Interesting theories!! Thank you for sharing!!❤
I appreciate that, thank you so much for your kind feedback. I guess because of the age of the case there is not much interest for cold Case detectives to exhume the body for DNA, if it had been more high profile, perhaps.
I'm wondering if it's possible to do some genetic genealogy on the remains found at the Kolb place in order to determine their identity. It might not shed any light on what happened to the Hydes, but would still be interesting.
18:21 It’s interesting and kind of funny how some couples who aren’t related (in any known way, or even anywhere near-closely, except for typically by phenotype &/or ethnicity), and who are sometimes startlingly similar-looking in ways, are madly attracted to one another, as the ill-fated young couple look in that photo at time stamp, imo. To me, they look very much like brother and sister there. Wonderful video, and a very sad and bizarre tale❣️🧿
They absolutely do. I missed it because I was thrown off by her bright teeth which seems unnatural so really only gave him a glance, Returned thanks to your time stamp. hair lines first, very high foreheads,.... especially if she is short. She many not actually be. Lips, nose , smile folds, eyes, hooded eye lids and.... if that's not enough me..... the clincher me and locks the similarities in place are the eyebrows and especially the most arched one... and its the same one on both of them..... check. Edit" I was so perplexed by what I saw that I took out my magnifying glass. His teeth are very bad and hers have been badly fixed.
Interesting video👏 I have a feeling that the old woman had something to do with the couples dissapearance. Perhaps she or someone with her lured them to come closer to the shore and killed them, then took their things and just pushed the boat away.🤔 Another things of mystery is who that skeleton was...

That's my theory
Thanks for your interesting insights and positive feedback. much appreciated 😊
Thank you so much for reaching out with your kind feedback 😊
Strange story, haunting poem. Good video.
Greetings Dearest Oddie! Thankyou for the perfect nightcap & Cheers!
I do hope you enjoy it, Helen, have a lovely evening 😊
Oldie a great mystery of this couple. I do hope they went together and happy in Heaven. As far as Emery yes I wouldn't of trusted him either. Something doesn't set right because how the boat was found and they're supplys on board. Best wishes to you from Oklahoma in United States 🇺🇸
Thank you so much for reaching out with your kind feedback Beverly 😊
Morning from California Oddie. Nice...a hometown mystery! Cheers for another PHENOMENAL story bruv
A mystery from your hometown, I do hope you enjoy it!
@@ObsoleteOddity excellent storytelling Oddie...as usual
I really appreciate that, thank you
@@ObsoleteOddity I appreciate the narratives you do
What would I do without you Oddy!!? 🤔🧐 You have become a comfortable treat in my life. Always impressed 👍 You are very appreciated for all the hard work you do for us! Much Love sent your way from Regina Saskatchewan Canada ✌️ 💜
That’s very kind of you, Regina, I’m trying my best to stay on this platform but RUclips is making it very difficult.
But thank you for watching!
Oddie, you're a diamond in the rough. I will be eternally grateful I found your channel. Much love, from India.
I’m already highly polished my friend, thank you! 😄
Their story was the first one I heard about disappearing on RUclips.
I think you did a wonderful video Oddie💓
Thank you for sharing💓
Thank you so much!
Oh man, the poem in the end……
I looked happy in pictures with my abusive ex and I got bullied into doing things I didn't want to do. Pictures tell good lies.
Another wonderful mystery! Thank you, Oddie! I guess I tend to believe that they had gone overboard. That makes the most sense with what was found. But I'm fascinated by the whole Kolb discovery. There's another good story behind that, I'm sure!
Thank you so much for reaching out with your kind feedback 😊
Never heard this story before. Thanks for uploading :)
I’m glad you enjoyed it, thank you!
Thanks Oddie. Needed this.
Happy to help! 😊
This is another amazing work of art. Thank you
So glad you enjoyed the presentation - very much appreciated 😊
I enjoyed this immensely! Thank you Oddie, well done 👏👏👏
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much my friend 😊
Another fine and fantastic adventure Sir Oddie♡
Very glad you enjoyed it, Frances!
I think they made have found misfortune (possibly hitting rapids, or mistook a small rapid for what could be falls.), and the reason nobody found them, is probably scavenging animals using their bodies as nourishment in a harsh, unforgiving biome where every calorie is sacred.
Wonderful as always Oddy Team ❤️
Thank you, my friend, but no team - just me!
@@ObsoleteOddity Well then, wonderful job Oddy. I've enjoyed your posts for years. Just wanted to let you know you are appreciated.
@lorry2763 that’s very kind of you, my friend, thank you for your loyal viewing and appreciation 😊
I love your channel❤
Thank you so much for your very generous donation and so happy you’re enjoying my content, thank you!
Excellent story. That poem at the end was very odd indeed
So glad you enjoyed the presentation - very much appreciated 😊
Great video. Thank you Oddie
Glad you enjoyed it Serena
Interesting case a real mystery
Another gret pick, Oddie! ❤
Sorry I mean great!
very much appreciated 😊
Your initiation is right on
I won't trust those brothers
There's something sneaky going on with this situation.
Sexual desire in some men can be a strong enough motive to kill in a remote area.
Thank you! 😊 Glad you enjoyed the presentation my friend!
I believe that the Colorado river was swollen and they got caught up in the rapids and no survivors 😢 many armchair detective think that the boat had a big part of the mystery and the Discovery channel did a feature about this as well.
As we use to say in New Mexico, Happy Trails to you my friend. Really enjoy your videos. Peace !!
I’m happy to hear that, thank you!
“Adventurous” is by far the better word anyway Oddie. You were only following good instincts 😊💕
Thank you 😄😊
I believe the obvious story. But have to admit the story of the Kolbs makes me very suspect. Maybe one of their many victims. Sad sorry and very interesting. Thanks Oddy.
Thanks for watching and for your feedback, Donna!
Excellent.. Thank You..
Thank you so much!
Love this channel!
Thank you!
This odd story reminds me of a couple taking a modern day cruise when the wife fell off the balcony. The husband didn't hesitate, he jumped in after her. They were never found but really it would have been better to call man overboard to the Captain so they could mark where she fell. They took 2 days to find out they were even missing!
🎵Hey there, Georgie Clark🎵✌️
I've heard of this story before, but you brought more information than I had heard of! Yes, very interesting about Kolb...hmmm. The poem was hauntingly befitting the story! Maybe it was an omen of things to come?
I really appreciate that, thank you.
You’re still the best, Oddie.
That’s very kind of you, my friend! 😊
Glad you enjoyed it, Theresa, thank you for your insights and feedback, much appreciated.
Wow, greatly researched and told, like always. Thank you so much, enjoyed it so much! ❤️
😊 Much appreciated, thank you kindly!
Another incredible story. Wow that poem...may she rest in peace, gentle mermaid
Thank you 🙏
Had similar thought of Kolb in the very moment I saw the photo of him. Lonely, old bachelor offering a couple to live with him over winter? I got the creeps.
Great mystery
😊 thank you kindly!
Thnx for the video
My pleasure!
Good morning Oddie 🎉
Good night lol
@@ObsoleteOddity 🤣🤣🤣
I never heard of this story, thank you for sharing ❤️
You are so welcome!
Oh thank you ,i love listening to you, and Sunday night perfect 👌 ❤
Much appreciated, thank you kindly
Yes Bessie Hyde was very attractive and her smile in that photograph looked natural to me. Even her husband's smile looked natural. Ive never heard this story prior to this. I think the Kolb bloke had something to do with it especially with the fact that a skeleton with a bullet wound to the temple was found on his property. Yes its a very interesting mystery that makes me want to know more, but i think you covered most of it very well. I still lean towards Kolb. Since no tattered clothing or skeletal remains weren't found they could have been buried somewhere in the wilderness by Kolb.
Thanks for your interesting insights and positive feedback. much appreciated 😊
THE VERY BEST!!!
Thank you! 🙏
I thought it was a red flag when kolb lead the search like a valiant leader looking for fallen soldiers! 🤔
I’m with you Oddie. My first thought was Cole murdered them.
Thanks for the great video, Oddie! BTW - it was aliens. Well, aliens or Lumerians/Atlanteans. 😎
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wishing you the same!
Am sure it's RUclipss doing, but not sure what to do about not getting connected to latest videos. As a patron, I'm angry. Can't believe had to confirm twice that I wanted to watch this. My man thanks oddie bravo dude 😎
Any time!
Another fascinating story from history.
Much appreciated, thank you kindly
Maybe the hydes wanted to dissappear for some reason and planned the whole thing... very interesting
EXCELLENT ! A GOOD & COMPREHENSIVE STORY , INDEED! PLUS, MOST UNSUAL WAY TOO WITH PHOTOGRAPHS . FROM, U.K. (2024).
Very glad you enjoyed it, thank you so much for your positive feedback!
They could do forensic genealogy on the skeleton with the bullet hole to find who he was related to. They do it with Jane and John Doe's. It may help answer that question.
The History Channel would say it's quite simple. Aliens!! Anything we can't explain must be related to aliens.
The one thing I don't get is how the fish could eat an entire body, bones and all. Wouldn't bodies (or portions thereof) have washed up somewhere on the river? Thanks for your always intriguing stories.
Well, there’s not just fish, but other animal scavengers that would take the bones and gnaw on them and displace them over a wide area
My ears always perk up when I hear Idaho mentioned.
Sad story 😭
Fascinating story! I had never known about this! Dont police always look closely at the partner or the last person to have been known to be with the victim? Couldnt DNA be used now to confirm whose skeleton it was found in the Kolbs boathouse? Interesting theories!! Thank you for sharing!!❤
I appreciate that, thank you so much for your kind feedback.
I guess because of the age of the case there is not much interest for cold Case detectives to exhume the body for DNA, if it had been more high profile, perhaps.
We will wait until you return ❤
From where?
All is shadey too bad forensic wasn't around then...would love to know the truth 😢
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you
They absolutely do.
Maybe bears got em and carried them off.
I thought that only a skull inside a coffee can was found at Kolb's property. Not an entire skeleton.
Interesting video👏
I have a feeling that the old woman had something to do with the couples dissapearance. Perhaps she or someone with her lured them to come closer to the shore and killed them, then took their things and just pushed the boat away.🤔
Another things of mystery is who that skeleton was...
Glad you enjoyed it!
The hole looks square like a. Pick. just a thought.
The uniqueness of this channel and the sound of your voice is the combo I need in my life!! Keep up the exceptional content! Much aloha from Hawaii, Oddie!🤙🏼🏝️
